The Public Theater of San Antonio in partnership with the San Antonio Area Foundation are pleased to announce Scholarship Opportunities for the 2019-2020 academic year through the Joe Salek Scholarship for the Theater Arts Trust. (San Antonio Area Foundation, 2019)

The Trust was created in honor of Joe Salek, whose years as Executive Director of the San Antonio Little Theater from 1949-1976 demonstrated his dedicated leadership and artistic inspiration and enriched the lives of all San Antonians.

Scholarships are available to students graduating from, or who have already graduated from, any public or private high school in Bexar County. Prospective student applicants must major or concentrate in one or more of the following subjects related to the theater arts: Acting/Performance, Playwriting, Directing, Scenery and Costume Design and Theater Management. Scholarship recipients will be selected based on academic achievement, experience, community involvement and career goals. A minimum 3.0 GPA, sample theater work attachments and a letter of recommendation are required. Scholarship application is now open and will close March 23, 2019.

Teatro Audaz’ ‘The Taming of the Shrew’

Teatro Audaz San Antonio’s next production is William Shakespeare’s ‘The Taming of the Shrew.’ Teatro Audaz gives this classic battle of the sexes tale a Latinx twist. Set in a Texas border town in 2018, this production cautions audiences to be careful what they wish for and invites them to come and find out who is taming who. In collaboration with Teatro Palo Alto. Thursday January 10 through Saturday January 12 at 7:30p.m. and Sunday January 13 at 2:30p.m. Tickets are $15 and are available online. It is directed by Laura T. Garza and stars Victoria Gutierrez as Grumio, Olivia Guerras as Bianca, Ruby Lopez as Wife/Kate and Gabriel Itzcoatl Luera as Sly/Petruchio.

‘An Infinite Ache’ at the Cellar Theater

Opening this Friday December 28 at The Public Theater’s Cellar Theater is ‘An Infinite Ache’ by David Schulner. This fresh and heartfelt play about love, time and the infinite directions in which two lives can travel plays until Sunday January 20. ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’ is co-written by Mischief Theatre company members Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields. The play is a riotous comedy about the theatre and introduces The ‘Cornley University Drama Society’ who are attempting to put on a 1920s murder mystery but, as the title suggests, everything that can go wrong does, as the accident-prone thespians battle on against all odds to get to their final curtain call. It is a remarkable rags-to-riches story for a play which started its life at a London fringe venue with only four paying members of the public at the first performance and has gone on to play to an audience of over 2 million people around the world. ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’ is directed by Mark Bell, featuring set design by Nigel Hook, lighting design by Ric Mountjoy, sound design by Andy Johnson and costume design by Roberto Surace. ‘Kinky Boots’ is based on the 2005 movie of the same name by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth. The film was inspired by true events and tells the story of Charlie Price who inherits a gentleman’s shoe factory from his father. It takes place in Northampton where Charlie is struggling with the family business of Price & Son. To save the business he pairs up with a cabaret performer named Lola who needs a pair of sturdy new stilettos. Together they develop a plan to produce a line of high-heeled boots and end up discovering that they are more alike than they thought.

San Antonio locals chosen for role of Lulu

The Tony nominated musical ‘Waitress,’ making its premiere in San Antonio at the Majestic Theatre for eight performances January 8 through January 13, 2019, has cast two young area actresses to take on the role of “Lulu” during its San Antonio engagement. (Broadway in San Antonio, 2018)

Annie Crain, 5, of Cuero, Texas and Georgia Hallmark 4, of Helotes, have been named in the role of “Lulu,” the daughter of the production’s main character. The character is described as “a sweet and carefree 4-to-5-year-old who appears in the show’s final scene.” Crain is in kindergarten, loves her cat named Bob and outdoor adventures with her three older brothers. Hallmark attends preschool in Helotes, also has three brothers and her hobbies include coloring, soccer, dance and gymnastics.

Both girls were chosen during an audition process held at the Hotel Valencia, November 12. Sixty girls participated in the auditions, which were presided over by members of the ‘Waitress’ company. The character of “Lulu” will be cast locally in each tour market and two girls are chosen to share the role.

Both girls will alternate the role of “Lulu” throughout the run of the show. Exact performance dates for each girl will be determined later, check the Majestic Theatre website for details.

Inspired by Adrienne Shelley’s beloved film, ‘Waitress’ tells the story of Jenna – a waitress and expert pie maker who dreams of a way out of her small town and loveless marriage. A baking contest in a nearby county and the town’s new doctor may offer her a chance at a fresh start, while her fellow waitresses offer their own recipes for happiness. But Jenna must summon the strength and courage to rebuild her own life. ‘The Santaland Diaries’ returns to The Classic Theatre

The hilarious holiday favorite ‘The Santaland Diaries’ returns to The Classic Theatre of San Antonio this week when it opens on Friday December 7. This one-man show is based on the true chronicles of NPR comic genius David Sedaris’ experience as Crumpet the Elf in Macy’s Santaland display. This cult classic riffs on a few of his odd encounters with his fellow man during the height of the holiday crunch. John Stillwagon returns as Sedaris’ not so merry alter ego Crumpet the Elf with Bart Roush directing. The show is written by David Sedaris and adapted by Joe Mantello. ‘The Santaland Diaries’ runs through Sunday December 16 with show dates on December 7, 8, 9 and 14, 15 and 16. ‘Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley’ at The Classic Theatre

Just in time for the holiday season, the next production at The Classic Theatre of San Antonio, ‘Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley,’ opens on Friday November 30. This San Antonio premiere is based on the characters from Jane Austen’s beloved novel ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and is written by Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon and directed by Kelly Roush. It runs from Friday November 30 through Sunday December 23. Showtimes are Friday and Saturday at 8p.m. and Sunday at 3p.m. Tickets are available online and at the box office and are $33 for general admission, $29 for senior, military, educator or SATCO and $18 for student. ‘Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley’ takes place two years after the conclusion of Jane Austen’s beloved novel ‘Pride and Prejudice,’ where the bookish, oft-neglected middle sister, Mary Bennet becomes the center of this holiday story. When the shy, bookworm Arthur de Bourgh turns up unexpectedly at the family celebration, Mary must learn to be the heroine of her own story in order to receive the romance she longs for.

After a successful opening weekend, the Tony-Award winning musical ‘Annie’ continues at the Woodlawn Theatre. This family friendly musical centers around little orphan Annie, a spunky orphan who must endure life at an orphanage headed by the despicable Miss Hannigan. ‘Annie’ is based on the popular Harold Gray comic strip Little Orphan Annie with music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin and book by Thomas Meehan. It is set in New York City’s depression era of the 1930s. After enduring a life of misery at the orphanage, her luck begins to change when she is chosen to spend a fairytale Christmas at the home of wealthy businessman Oliver Warbucks. Meanwhile, spiteful Miss Hannigan has other ideas and hatches a plan to spoil Annie’s search for her true family. After winning the hearts of the household staff, Mr. Warbucks and Grace Farrell, his personal secretary, she finds a new home complete with the loveable mutt Sandy. Among the most popular musical numbers are ‘Tomorrow,’ ‘It’s the Hard Knock Life’ and ‘You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile.’
