Dawn Fades – Ode
Metal Assault Records

Mixed by heavy music mainstay Josh Newell (Intronaut, Anthrax, Linkin Park), the album manages to be more mature and rawer than their critically acclaimed self-titled 2019 debut. Retaining the core elements of their highly successful debut, Dawn Fades takes their musical evolution to the next level on Ode, undoubtedly leaving an even stronger impression on listeners.

Frontman and songwriter Sam Sherwood says the album is “a picture of feelings about the trappings of the world we find ourselves in.” The band also includes Scott Rosenquist on drums, Markus Erren Pardiñas on 8-string bass, and Nate Hertweck on guitar. Americana trailblazers The Delevantes return with new album A Thousand Turns

A Thousand Turns, The Delevantes’ first album of new music in twenty years, will be out September 17 on Moon River Records. Photo: google

On the precipice of brothers Bob and Mike Delevante helping define a new collective genre of music, Rolling Stone once said “The Delevantes deliver a broad view of the American musical crossroad where country and rock meet and, in this case, become one.” To put it simply, The Delevantes—along with contemporaries like Lucinda Williams, Wilco, Son Volt, the Jayhawks, and Whiskeytown—were right in the middle of it all when the term “Americana” started getting thrown around in regards to music. Now, after two decades since their last album, The Delevantes find themselves releasing new music into a thriving international scene of the roots-meets-rock-meets-country sound they helped pioneer. On September 17, Bob and Mike are releasing The Delevantes’ A Thousand Turns, a full-length album produced by The Delevantes, long-term production partner and founding member of E Street Band, Garry Tallent, and multi-instrumentalist, Dave Coleman. Fans can hear the album’s first single, “Little By Little,” right now and pre-order or pre-save A Thousand Turns right here. (The Delevantes, 2021)

Opening with a jungle-y drum beat and jangle-y guitars, “Little By Little” is a feel good tune, celebrating life’s perseverance—purposeful or not. Born and raised in a working-class New Jersey family, the brothers’ dynamic harmonies evoke classic duos like The Everly Brothers and The Louvin Brothers before them, and The Avett Brothers and Fleet Foxes after.

The Delevantes debut album, Long About That Time, was released by Rounder Records to considerable critical acclaim in 1995. Garry Tallent, long-time bass player in Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, co-produced the record. A growing fanbase creating a buzz, hits on the new Gavin Americana radio chart, and a memorable roots-rockin’ performance at SXSW in Austin helped the Delevantes seal a major label deal with Capitol Records. Their second album and major label debut Postcards From Along The Way, was again co-produced by Tallent.

Tallent is back yet again as co-producer on A Thousand Turns. In 2019, Bob and Mike Delevante returned to New Jersey to open for Southside Johnny, joined by Bruce Springsteen and Tallent, at the legendary Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Performing together again sparked new creative energy. With an invitation from Nashville’s Blackbird Academy to record, the brothers reunited with bandmates Tallent and Bryan Owings. The sessions gave birth to A Thousand Turns, produced by the Delevantes, Garry Tallent and Dave Coleman, and mixed by Mixmaster Bill Schnee.

A Thousand Turns Track list:
All In All
Little By Little
Short Bed Blues
The Rain’s Been Falling
Come And Go
The Light Of Your Eyes
If You Let It
Dear Kate
Deeper Shade Of Blue
Every Sunset
This Old House
The Junkman

Weekly Wanderer podcast series based on ‘Wanderer: The Ultimate Hippy Trail Journey’ by F.T. Burke and Steve Reifman

On the golden anniversary of Steve Reifman’s adventure, the authors created a weekly podcast series to commemorate his year-long adventure. Photo: amazon

Author F.T. Burke is a lifelong resident of the state of Michigan. He enjoyed a prior career in the high-tech sector, serving as a systems engineer and project manager. Burke’s debut novel, “The Bohemian Adventure,” traces the journey of one who meets up with devoted “deadheads” who followed the psychedelic rock group, the Grateful Dead. “Wanderer – The Ultimate Hippy Trail Journey” by F.T. Burke and Steve Reifman is a book that tells the remarkable story of a young man’s year-long journey of discovery wandering across the globe in 1970-71. Steven W. Reifman is a practicing lawyer, activist and businessman. He took a journey similar in time and place to that of Wanderer’s main character, Woodstock. (F.T. Burke, 2021)

During the height of the pandemic while in quarantine, Steve Reifman, on whose travel the book is based, recorded the fictional book for posterity in his own home on a podcast type recorder. Then as the 50-year anniversary of the travel approached, Steve was inspired to commemorate his incredible journey of a lifetime by recording and publishing a week-by-week video relying heavily on his handwritten travel journals and readings from the book. Steve and co-author, F.T. Burke, enlisted the services of their media arts specialist, Xavier Vance, and they were “off to the races.” Each week, without fail, the trio have published, all the way to week 42 with the end in sight. As the authors issued their weeklies, the concept of a mini-series or other serial took shape with a chapter based on each week’s adventure.

Steve’s adventures, the inspiration for the book “Wanderer,” co-written with F.T. Burke, took him across four continents through 26 countries in 1970-71. Now on the Golden Anniversary of his own real-life adventure, Attorney Steve Reifman—or “Stevie Wander” as he likes to be called—-tells the true tales behind the story, as the weeks roll by towards his homecoming. The weekly adventures kicked off on September 30, 2020, and now they are in the 42nd week, closing in on the exciting homecoming of this prodigal son on his year-long adventure. The Weekly Wanderer series is available on YouTube.

“Wanderer: The Ultimate Hippy Trail Journey” – During the crazy latter days of the Vietnam War, many young travelers wandered about doing drugs, having sex, sleeping out, and back-packing through Europe, North Africa, and Asia. As a young man coming of age, just out of college, with no clear future and unable to pay rent, the bushy-red-haired Woodstock joins these revelers to wander the world, searching for his soul. Upon beating the Draft, he crosses the Atlantic to the Old World in October 1970 without any particular itinerary, no set time to come “home” and not much money. He finds God everywhere no matter how hard he tries to hide and look away. During his year-long journey, his spontaneous, free-wheeling adventures of raucous, hilarious incidents all weigh heavily against his need to come home and grow up. Come along for this unforgettable adventure of a lifetime. (amazon, 2021)

Suzanne Santo releases ‘Save For Love’ from new album

‘Save For Love’ is Suzanne Santo’s third single from sophomore solo album Yard Sale, available everywhere August 27, 2021. Photo: google

A tireless creator, Suzanne Santo has built her sound in the grey area between Americana, Southern-gothic soul, and forward-thinking rock & roll. It is a sound that nods to her past—a childhood spent in the Rust Belt which is also where she learned to love a yard sale; a decade logged as a member of the L.A.-based duo HoneyHoney; the acclaimed solo album, Ruby Red, of which Paste called “shameless, self-aware dialogue that opens the door for conversation that leads to real healing;” and the world tour that took her from Greece to Glastonbury as a member of Hozier’s band—while still exploring new territory. With Yard Sale, Santo boldly moves forward, staking her claim once again as an Americana innovator. It is an album inspired by the past, written by an artist who is only interested in the here-and-now. For Suzanne Santo, the here-and-now sounds pretty good. (Suzanne Santo, 2021)

Yard Sale, the sophomore solo album from now Austin, Texas-based Suzanne Santo, is comprised of 12 songs written between Hozier rehearsals, some with Santo holing up in a farmhouse on the rural Irish coast, while others were finished during bus rides, backstage writing sessions, and hotel stays. A multi-faceted creative, fans likely know Santo from her work in musical duo HoneyHoney and from her extensive touring with the aforementioned Hozier in which she was both the opener and a band member. The Cleveland, Ohio-born artist’s creative output also extends to the screen, having had acting roles in several series and features. Recently, Santo released Yard Sale’s third single “Save For Love.” It is available on all streaming platforms by clicking here. Yard Sale releases August 27 via Soundly Music.

The album presents Santo at the very top of her game musically, writing her own string arrangements and singing each song in an agile, acrobatic voice—perhaps in part due to the cathartic making-of process and what that has meant for her professionally and personally. At times, she bridges the gap between indie-rock and neo-soul. On other tracks, she mixes gospel influences with a deconstructed R&B beat. Fans will hear layers of spacey, atmospheric electric guitar and Shakey Graves on a rainy-day ballad driven forward by a metronomic drum pattern, and Gary Clark Jr. punctuating with fiery fretwork. Both Shakey Graves and Gary Clark Jr. represent Santo’s commitment to and respect for Austin’s musical community. Realizing that there is more than just tequila in the water in Texas, Santo’s move to Austin and this album is the musical equivalent of a homeowner’s purging of old possessions in order to clear up some much-needed room.

The album’s first single “Bad Beast” is also available for listening on all DSPs and by clicking here, and finds Santo wrestling creativity out of a particularly gripping bout with insomnia. “Common Sense,” the album’s second single, was released in June, and is also available for streaming by clicking here.

3. Gold Rush

Jeremy Pinnell’s second single from new album

‘Night Time Eagle’ is Jeremy Pinnell’s second single from his new album Goodbye L.A., due out October 1. Photo: google

When Jeremy Pinnell released OH/KY in the summer of 2015 to stunned acclaim, it felt like an entire career compressed into one knock-out album. Hailed as, a “Mind-blowingly good” (Greg Vandy/KEXP) “tutorial on classic country music” (Popmatters), Pinnell’s debut immediately was set apart as authentic and unflinching. Dogged touring through Europe and the States and celebrated radio sessions followed, cementing Pinnell’s position as a no-fuss master of his craft. (Jeremy Pinnell, 2021)

His 2017 album, Ties of Blood and Affection presented a canny lateral move. Instead of doubling down on the stark themes and values of his debut, the sophomore album found Pinnell finding comfort in his own skin, achieving the redemption only hinted at in his previous batch of haunted songs. Pinnell’s newest album, Goodbye L.A., is set to be released on October 1, 2021.

In a flurry of vocal harmonies, funky telecaster picking, and a steady two step beat, Jeremy Pinnell’s brand new single “Night Time Eagle” is off to the races before listeners even know what hit them. It is a song full of Bakersfield country vibes over which Pinnell’s words narrate the balance of keeping the proverbial tour-train on its tracks. “We spent a lot of time on the road and this song was written to let my wife know everything was on the up and up,” he says. “Night Time Eagle” is the second single from Goodbye L.A., Pinnell’s upcoming album due out October 1 via SofaBurn Records. Glide Magazine premiered “Night Time Eagle” saying “For Pinnell, this tune marks an exciting new direction down yet another real-deal country sound and is only further evidence that he is an artist who is absolutely worthy of widespread acclaim.” Fans can listen to “Night Time Eagle” right now at this link and pre-order Goodbye L.A. ahead of its October 1 release right here.

For vinyl lovers, “Night Time Eagle” will be pressed as a limited run 7-inch release. The primary side of the vinyl will have the album cut of “Night Time Eagle” while the alternate side will house Pinnell’s haunting cover of the 1990 Concrete Blonde classic “Joey” which was released as a stand-alone single in January 2021. “Joey” will not be on Goodbye L.A. therefore this 7-inch will be the only way to own it on vinyl. “Night Time Eagle” will also have its own dedicated, limited edition tee shirt. Both the shirt and the vinyl are available for purchase now at sofaburn.com.
