Rodgers + Hammerstein’s ‘Cinderella’ is the new Broadway adaptation of the classic musical. It opens today at the Woodlawn Theatre and will run until Sunday September 19, 2021. Performance times are Friday and Saturdays at 7:30p.m. and Sundays at 3p.m. Tickets range from $18 to $30 and are available online. Due to COVID seating restrictions, all tickets are general admission and must be purchased in advance, online only. Seating is on a first come, first served basis. Author F.T. Burke is a lifelong resident of the state of Michigan. He enjoyed a prior career in the high-tech sector, serving as a systems engineer and project manager. Burke’s debut novel, “The Bohemian Adventure,” traces the journey of one who meets up with devoted “deadheads” who followed the psychedelic rock group, the Grateful Dead. “Wanderer – The Ultimate Hippy Trail Journey” by F.T. Burke and Steve Reifman is a book that tells the remarkable story of a young man’s year-long journey of discovery wandering across the globe in 1970-71. Steven W. Reifman is a practicing lawyer, activist and businessman. He took a journey similar in time and place to that of Wanderer’s main character, Woodstock. (F.T. Burke, 2021)
During the height of the pandemic while in quarantine, Steve Reifman, on whose travel the book is based, recorded the fictional book for posterity in his own home on a podcast type recorder. Then as the 50-year anniversary of the travel approached, Steve was inspired to commemorate his incredible journey of a lifetime by recording and publishing a week-by-week video relying heavily on his handwritten travel journals and readings from the book. Steve and co-author, F.T. Burke, enlisted the services of their media arts specialist, Xavier Vance, and they were “off to the races.” Each week, without fail, the trio have published, all the way to week 42 with the end in sight. As the authors issued their weeklies, the concept of a mini-series or other serial took shape with a chapter based on each week’s adventure.
Steve’s adventures, the inspiration for the book “Wanderer,” co-written with F.T. Burke, took him across four continents through 26 countries in 1970-71. Now on the Golden Anniversary of his own real-life adventure, Attorney Steve Reifman—or “Stevie Wander” as he likes to be called—-tells the true tales behind the story, as the weeks roll by towards his homecoming. The weekly adventures kicked off on September 30, 2020, and now they are in the 42nd week, closing in on the exciting homecoming of this prodigal son on his year-long adventure. Jerusalem’s Lot is a short story published in Stephen King’s 1978 collection ‘Night Shift.’ It is an epistolary short story set in the fictional town of Preacher’s Corners, Cumberland County, Maine, in 1850. It is told through a series of letters and diary entries, mainly those of its main character, aristocrat Charles Boone, although his manservant, Calvin McCann occasionally narrates.
Chapelwaite – following his wife’s tragic death at sea, Captain Charles Boone and his children return to the small town of Preacher’s Corners, Maine, where a dark family history haunts them. He is soon forced to confront the darkness that has plagued his family and their ancestral home for centuries.

Ealdor Bealu is a progressive stoner rock quartet from the high desert of Boise, ID. With a focus on shifting dynamics from the ambient to the massive and back again, their intriguing sound expands genre boundaries to create a mosaic of sonic praise. The band’s first full-length offering Dark Water At The Foot Of The Mountain (Independent 2017) drew local, regional, and even international praise as a standout debut. Boise, Idaho progressive stoner rock / doom quartet Ealdor Bealu is the latest band to join the Metal Assault Records label roster. The band self-released their sophomore album Spirit of the Lonely Places on vinyl and digital platforms in 2019, and the album will be released on CD for the first time via MAR on September 24. In addition, the label will release the next Ealdor Bealu album in early 2022. Even more details surrounding the new release will be revealed later in 2021. The band has also recently announced live performance dates for their Fall 2021 US West Coast tour in support of their new release. A tireless creator, Suzanne Santo has built her sound in the grey area between Americana, Southern-gothic soul, and forward-thinking rock & roll. Yard Sale, the sophomore solo album from now Austin, Texas-based Suzanne Santo, is comprised of 12 songs written between Hozier rehearsals, some with Santo holing up in a farmhouse on the rural Irish coast, while others were finished during bus rides, backstage writing sessions, and hotel stays. A multi-faceted creative, fans likely know Santo from her work in musical duo HoneyHoney and from her extensive touring with the aforementioned Hozier in which she was both the opener and a band member. The Cleveland, Ohio-born artist’s creative output also extends to the screen, having had acting roles in several series and features. The album presents Santo at the very top of her game musically, writing her own string arrangements and singing each song in an agile, acrobatic voice—perhaps in part due to the cathartic making-of process and what that has meant for her professionally and personally. At times, she bridges the gap between indie-rock and neo-soul. On other tracks, she mixes gospel influences with a deconstructed R&B beat. Fans will hear layers of spacey, atmospheric electric guitar and Shakey Graves on a rainy-day ballad driven forward by a metronomic drum pattern, and Gary Clark Jr. punctuating with fiery fretwork. Both Shakey Graves and Gary Clark Jr. represent Santo’s commitment to and respect for Austin’s musical community. Realizing that there is more than just tequila in the water in Texas, Santo’s move to Austin and this album is the musical equivalent of a homeowner’s purging of old possessions in order to clear up some much-needed room.

When Jeremy Pinnell released OH/KY in the summer of 2015 to stunned acclaim, it felt like an entire career compressed into one knock-out album. This weekend is your last chance to catch Teatro Audaz’ production of ‘The Panza Monologues.’ Upcoming showtimes are Friday and Saturday at 7:30p.m. and Sunday at 2p.m. at the Cellar Theatre and livestream online. Written by Virginia Grise and Irma Mayorga, ‘The Panza Monologues’ is based on women’s stories about their panzas—tú sabes—that roll of belly we all try to hide. ‘The Panza Monologues’ features the words of Chicanas speaking with humor and candor. Their stories boldly place the panza front and center as a symbol that reveals the lurking truths about women’s thoughts, lives, loves, abuses, and living conditions. Directed by Paula Rodriguez and featuring the ensemble cast of Brizzo Torres, Jojanie Moreno, Isabel DeLaCerda, and Laura T. Garza, it runs an hour and ten minutes with no intermission.
‘The Panza Monologues’ has played across the nation and now it has come home to where it all began. Right from the start, it gives off an unmistakable ‘San Anto’ vibe and is a bilingual narrative of everything having to do with curves. It begins with an introduction by the four ladies onstage stating that women have no problem talking about vaginas, and then give various synonyms for it, yet are hesitant, even shy, to talk about their ‘panzas.’ Their battle cry is “Panza Power!” The production includes the sections ‘Historia’ (an ode to shoes – ‘tacones’ and female empowerment), ‘Hunger for Justice,’ ‘Noticias’ (sobering facts about how people have gotten fatter and San Antonio is seen as one of the fattest cities), ‘Praying,’ ‘Panza Power,’ and ‘Political Panza.’ It ends with a party-like atmosphere and all four ladies return onstage to urge women to be proud of their curves, or ‘panza proud.’ As they proclaim: “When all else fails, power to the panza.”
Overall, ‘The Panza Monologues’ celebrates women and urges them to love their curves. One of the funniest and most relatable moments is when one of the ladies uses a pair of pliers to try to adjust her jeans – definite grade A performance. The show does an excellent job of balancing humor, history, and more serious topics such as ‘the diabetic mom’ – how she developed diabetes and how it affected the family. The real conversation starter must be the debate between Cubans and Mexicans where the question that hangs is “If obesity is synonymous with capitalism, then why is San Antonio one of the poorest and fattest cities around?” It also uses poetry to convey the frustrating and challenging ways that women feel about their bodies. While the main topic is how women should accept and love themselves, it also touches on obesity, diabetes, and income inequality and hopefully it will spark a conversation to bring about much needed changes in our society. There is moderate cursing, but it does not distract from the message. ‘The Panza Monologues’ is a must-see production filled with humor and relevant social issues with excellent performances by everyone involved.

Grayson Jenkins’ musical versatility—playing everything from country and bluegrass to rock ‘n’ roll—has helped him create a diverse fan base, and he has built his career on his own, self-funding his projects and doing whatever he has needed to do to keep his music life rolling. A proud Kentuckian—by birth and now, by choice—Grayson Jenkins sings his stories with a shrewd sincerity, a hopeful resignation, and a canny insight into the ways of the world; a world that found him, like many others, putting his life and career on hold for the last year and a half. Jenkins delivers candor and vulnerability with his signature resonant baritone; powerful enough to fill large halls but still tender enough to cradle his lyrics and deliver them straight into listeners’ hearts. Album-opener, “Mockingbird,” is a bright pop-inflected track whose joyous, rollicking vibe belies the sadness of the story it tells: the end of a relationship, the persistent lingering memories of a lover, and the difficult determination to move on. The Bluegrass Situation caught up with Jenkins to learn more about the tune and its origin. “I had just broken up with my girlfriend of four years and was a bit of a mess,” he said. “I decided to go camping in my van and to see Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan in Milwaukee. The first line for this song came from a bird that was chirping non-stop by my van one morning. I couldn’t get it to leave, kind of like her memory. It was a good trip but I didn’t come back with anything but a broken heart, toll tickets, a sunburn, and this song.” Fans can listen to “Mockingbird” right here and pre-order or pre-save Turning Tides ahead of its August 27 release at this link.
Although Jenkins started recording the album in 2019 and finished it by summer 2020, he held off putting it out during the pandemic, and holding onto the album has been “kind of a life vest of music,” he says. Jenkins calls the album a labor of love, saying, “We recorded the bones of the songs in five days, and then over the course of several months I added to it.” The album features an all-star cast of Kentucky musicians, including Jesse Wells (Tyler Childers), who co-produced the album with Jenkins and played electric guitar, fiddle, and mandolin. With the help of Wells, Jenkins recruited Miles Miller (Sturgill Simpson) for drums and Kenny Miles (Wayne Graham) for bass to round out the core recording group.
The album’s title track rides in on a Dick Dale-like guitar lick before shimmering slide guitar runs provide a bed for Jenkins’ slow-burning vocals; the song evokes the uncertainty that dark times bring and the glimmering rays of anticipation that change brings. With sonic echoes of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “The Ballad of Curtis Loew,” “Turning Tides” cannily rockets from the instrumental bridge into a bright major key. Jenkins points out that for him the primary meaning of the song is “hope and optimism. Like a lot of folks, I’ve dealt with depression and anxiety. Coming out of those hard times is one of the greatest feelings in the world and this song was written about that.” In the end, Jenkins feels just like the character from the song: “Ready for the sun to shine and the tide to turn.”
Like “Turning Tides” and “Mockingbird,” the songs on Turning Tides all tell captivating stories of love and loss, heartbreak, and hope. For Jenkins, the arc of the album follows transitions in his own life—moving into music full-time, emerging into a post-pandemic phase of life, leaving behind one relationship and starting another—and offers perspectives on the changes we all experience in our lives as we move from sadness to joy, from self-denial to self-discovery, from darkness to light.

San Diego, California’s instrumental death metal duo Fermentor released their full-length debut album, Continuance on CD via Metal Assault Records on July 2, 2021. Featuring drummer Dylan Marks and guitarist Adam “Wally” Wollach, both are members of Beekeeper (also on the label roster). Continuance is available for purchase online. (Fermentor, 2021)
Stripping away the comforts of a traditional band infrastructure, Fermentor relies solely on communicating through only two elements, drums, and guitar. The two instruments acting more like contrapuntal voices, rather than just rhythm and melody. Taking total control of their unique synchronicity and subverting expectations of tonality and song structure, Fermentor has created a highly unique release in Continuance. Bursting with intricate timings, propulsive arrangements, and unconventional riffing, this incredible offering ushers its listeners into a new realm of musical possibility.

Watch the video for “7th Circle” released on July 9 by Fermentor. Pursuing an old-school death metal style as an instrumental guitar-drum duo certainly makes Fermentor a standout band to begin with. Marks and Wollach have played in bands for years and expressed their musicianship in a variety of ways, but with Fermentor their musical prowess truly comes to the forefront.
