Back-to-School Educator Happy Hour

Magik is hosting its annual Free Educator Happy Hour to give hard-working local teachers, faculty, and school staff a chance to unwind, connect with peers, and see how the upcoming lineup can complement their curriculum.

  • When: Thursday, September 3, 2026 | 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM
  • What to Expect: First look at recent theatre renovations, a sneak peek at the new season, free food and drinks, door prizes, classroom resources, and a look behind the curtain.
  • Admission: Free and open to all area educators and school staff (registration required).

If You Give A Mouse A Cookie

  • The Story: This three-time Tony-nominated Broadway hit follows cheerful Frog and grumpy Toad across four fun-filled seasons with a jazzy, upbeat score.

John Davies’ Pinocchio (Co-Production with OPERA San Antonio)

Seussical the Musical (Theatre for Young Audiences Version)

San Antonio Charter Moms kicks off largest School Discovery Days series

Nowadays there are over 150 schools of choice in the San Antonio area alone. How do you define school choice? Simply put, school choice is the process of allowing every family to choose the PK-12 educational options that best fit their children’s learning needs regardless of zip code. Every child is unique, and all children learn differently. Some children might succeed at the neighborhood public school, while others might fit in better at a charter, magnet, online, private, or home learning environment. With so many options, parents and caregivers can quickly become overwhelmed. That is where the nonprofit San Antonio Charter Moms (SACM) goes to work. (San Antonio Charter Moms, 2022)

Considered the leading authority for assisting local families in their school search, the nonprofit is designed to help parents and caregivers make informed decisions. San Antonio Charter Moms provides easy access to extensive school resources such as online discussion groups with over 10K members, articles, live videos, enrollment guides, podcasts, a school finder app, and perhaps the most anticipated and impactful of all, their in-person School Discovery Day Series held annually during enrollment season.

SACM hosts its largest series yet, with six School Discovery Days kicking off on October 22nd at Hemisfair’s Yanaguana Garden and concluding with their final event on March 4, 2023. Families will have the opportunity to meet school representatives from 15 to nearly 30 top San Antonio choice schools at each event, ask questions, get on interest lists and learn about application processes and deadlines. Families will also be able to enjoy a variety of fun activities during the event series, including DJs from The AM Project and animal show-and-tell with Once in a Wild, food trucks, and more. Families can receive hands-on guidance from the SACM team on navigating the nonprofit’s online tools and resources designed to simplify the search and application process. The events are free and open to the public and include great raffle prizes to boot.

SCHOOL DISCOVERY DAY AT THE DOSEUM (Flagship Event | National School Choice Week)

School Discovery Day is a free event in The DoSeum’s theater space. Guests will be greeted by the beats of the young DJs of The AM Project. With admission, guests can navigate The DoSeum’s 68,000 square feet of wow-worthy galleries designed to cultivate curiosity, ignite learning, and discover the power of play through interactive fun. National School Choice Week, January 22–28, is a celebration of the process of allowing every family to choose the K–12 educational options that best fit their children. SACM will host nearly 30 schools during this, the flagship event of the series.

Dough Pizzeria Napoletana to open location at Hemisfair

Dough Pizzeria Napoletana is a San Antonio restaurant known for its authentic Neopolitan style pizza concept and coming up in May, there will be another location, this one to be located downtown at Hemisfair. Dough’s success stems from the original San Antonio location on Blanco Road which Doug and Lori Horn opened in 2007 and another location in Plano, TX, which opened in 2012. The debut of Dough’s second location in San Antonio will add further grandeur to the vibrant and redeveloping urban district downtown. (Dough Pizzeria Napoletana, 2018)

Inspired by the traditions of Italian ingredients, Executive Chef and Co-Owner Doug Horn, with his wife, Co-Owner Lori Horn, have developed the only pizzeria in San Antonio certified to serve under the guidelines created by Associazione Pizzaiuoli Napoletani (Neapolitan Pizzaioli Association) founded in Naples, Italy.  All ingredients are sourced as much as possible from Italy as well as from local farmers.  A true Neapolitan-style pizza is easy to distinguish: charred crust, sparse toppings and a raised border.

Menu pizza options will range from Arugula & Prosciutto, blending house-made mozzarella with truffle vinaigrette, to Pork Love, made with house-made spicy sausage, Speck, Soppressata Salami, Pancetta, house-made mozzarella and tomato sauce. Aside from traditional pizza, guests can expect house-made burrata, meatballs, antipasti, Tuscan and Italian salads and Italian-inspired desserts. Dough Pizzeria Napoletana will also reflect Italy with its extensive wine menu featuring carefully selected and imported vino from Southern Italy.  The drink menu will include a range of Italian sodas and local craft beers on tap, as well as Kimbo espresso.

Dough will be located on the corner of South Alamo Street and East César E. Chávez Boulevard at the southwest corner of Hemisfair. Owners Doug and Lori Horn anticipate the renowned restaurant will become a neighborhood spot for locals, a checklist destination for downtown tourists and convention attendees, a relaxing place in the park and a jumping off point for exploring Southtown. Like other businesses at Hemisfair, Dough will operate out of a restored historic property, an icehouse once called the O.K. Bar, serendipitously matching Dough’s branding which has always included the “O.K.” symbol. There will be a neon “O.K.” hand symbol sign outside the restaurant, as well as an “O.K.” symbol mural located near the entranceway, as an homage to the historic building’s name.
