Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center announces partnership with SAY Sí

The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center’s youth theater company Grupo Animo will collaborate this summer with Teatro ALAS, the youth theater company of SAY Sí. Both youth groups will form to present an intense four-week theatrical workshop that will lead to an original play written by the students. This unique collaboration is offered to students between the ages of 13 and 18 at no cost. (Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, 2024)

Due to the pending renovations of the historic Guadalupe Theater, classes will take place at SAY Sí, 1310 S. Brazos, San Antonio, TX 78207, June 3 to 28, 2024, Monday through Friday from noon to 5p.m. with a final performance on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at 7p.m. SAY Sí is located down the block from the historic Guadalupe Theater.

Grupo Animo is the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center’s resident youth theater company, founded in 1993 and consisting of youth (ages 13-18) from all backgrounds and areas of San Antonio, and Bexar County. Under the mentorship of professional teaching artists and directors, Grupo Animo company members are guided through a four-week summer theater experience, allowing them a platform to make their voice heard through thought-provoking, engaging and culturally relevant, performance-based Teatro/Theatre.

Grupo Animo’s mission is to use Teatro/Theatre to instill an understanding of the value of culture, creativity, and community.

SAY Sí is a national award-winning year-round, long-term, nonprofit arts-based youth development program for San Antonio area students in grades 6 through 12 that provides opportunities for these students to develop artistic and social skills in preparation for higher educational advancement and professional careers. SAY Sí programs serve over 200 students from all of San Antonio’s school districts and has an active public schedule of art events. SAY Sí accepts diverse students from all areas of San Antonio, but first priority is given to students from low economic households.

Teatro ALAS (Activating Leadership, Art & Service) operates as a collaborative ensemble known as the ALAS Youth Theatre Company. Committed to the creation of new and original performance work by, for and about San Antonio youth, ALAS challenges students to draw from their own experiences, observations, and insights to produce theatre of relevance to their lives and their communities. Emphasizing leadership skills and civic engagement, ALAS creates work that addresses community needs and concerns, challenges prejudices and social injustice, and celebrates diversity and difference.

Grupo Animo and Teatro ALAS’ goal at the end of the program is to teach students basic history and practice of Teatro/Theatre, acting, teamwork, poetry, creative writing, movement and performance. The summer program will culminate with a student showcase created and performed by the student members.

SAY Sí and San Anto Cultural Arts to restore historic Westside mural

Local arts nonprofit SAY Sí is teaming up with San Anto Cultural Arts and community volunteers to restore the “Leyendas Aztecas” mural on San Antonio’s Westside. Located directly across from SAY Sí’s new campus at 1310 S. Brazos, San Anto Cultural Arts artists, a staple arts organization of the Westside that has historically created San Antonio’s murals that vibrantly tell the story of the community, created the mural. A team of lead muralists and assistants from San Anto Cultural Arts will direct the volunteers and no previous painting experience is required. SAY Sí students, parents, family members, alumni, and San Antonio residents at large are welcome to join forces to help repair this Westside relic.

Participants are welcome to volunteer for multiple time slots and should dress in comfortable clothes that can get paint on them. Volunteers will receive water, sunscreen, and bug spray. To sign up to volunteer or for more information, complete the Google Form.

Volunteer dates include:

  • Saturday August 14 from 11a.m. to 2p.m.
  • Tuesday August 17 – Thursday August 19 from 5p.m. to 7p.m
  • Saturday August 21 from 11a.m. to 2p.m.

SAY Sí welcomes new co-directors

Following the recent announcement of SAY Sí’s executive evolution, SAY Sí’s new Co-Executive Directors Stephen Garza-Guzman and Nicole Amri are excited to welcome the community into its new location as they prepare for the return of in-person events and student applications for the 2021-2022 school year. After delays to its official opening due to the pandemic, SAY Sí is excited to open its doors to the Westside for the first time as construction on the first phase of the new location ends. In order to remain accessible, SAY Sí will continue to offer virtual programming to serve as many students as possible throughout the upcoming school year. (SAY Sí, 2021)

Co-Executive Directors Stephen Garza-Guzman, a nine-year employee of SAY Sí, and Nicole Amri, a SAY Sí alumna and employee, plan to take what they have learned from the organization to build upon existing programs and serve more youth as they transition into their new roles and open the doors of the 1310 S Brazos location this August. As the organization continues to establish its new home in 78207, the leadership team looks forward to making more meaningful connections on San Antonio’s Westside.  

“We are eager to recruit new students again, pilot new creative mediums and deepen our service to new populations,” – Stephen Garza-Guzman, Co-Executive Director of SAY Sí. 

After graduating the class of 2021 and taking a short break this summer, SAY Sí will welcome the return of its students back into its studios starting this August, as well as four major in-person events for the public, including:

  • August: Back-to-School Art Supply Drive
    As part of many efforts to put school and art supplies in the hands of San Antonio youth, SAY Sí will give away free art supply kits to elementary- and middle school-aged students on Saturday, August 21, 2021 from 10 a.m. to Noon at SAY Sí (1310 S. Brazos St. San Antonio, TX 78207).
  • September: The San Antonio Show
    Centered around local artists, both established and emerging, this celebration of San Antonio’s LatinX roots will dig into the past, present and future, and showcase all the things SAY Sí loves about San Antonio. The exhibition will be free and open to the public. Official dates will be shared at a later time.
  • November: Muertitos Fest
    SAY Sí will celebrate both Native American Heritage Month and Día de los Muertos in a slow reopening of in-person events/activities. More details to be announced in the coming weeks. 
  • December: We Are Now: Youth Voices During Challenging Times
    In collaboration with UP Partnership, SAY Sí is taking submissions for this city-wide high school art show. For more information or to apply, contact SAY Sí.

SAY Sí student receives globally competitive Adobe Design Circle Scholarship

SAY Sí is thrilled to announce that recent high school graduate and SAY Sí alum, Jonathan Rodriguez, has been awarded the Adobe Design Circle Scholarship, a globally competitive design scholarship. To help reach untapped youth communities and foster diversity in the design industry, Adobe’s Design Circle Scholarship awards 10 annual college scholarships – up to $25,000 per year, for each year of the recipient’s undergraduate education (up to four years or $100,000). Rodriguez’ application was selected as one of 10 students from around the globe and will be applied toward his studies in UX Design at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) this fall, which intersects with his web design background and passion for creativity, technology and leadership. As an industry underrepresented by Latinos, Rodriguez believes he will make a difference in driving UX Design innovation of products, services and systems inclusive of his culture, which will help to be made possible by this generous scholarship.

“This award means I will be able to do what I love doing, which is being a creative professional. I was so happy when I found out that I called my mom right away and messaged my two SAY Sí Instructors, Stevan and Ned. I will be studying UX Design at SCAD, and with the Adobe Design Circle Scholarship Program, I will have the opportunity to job shadow and be mentored by creatives at Google, Adobe and many other companies. This is a life-changing award and sets a new standard and path forward.”

Rodriguez is one of SAY Sí’s studio liaisons, acting as an ambassador for the nonprofit arts organization. SAY Sí’s mission is to support and amplify the voices of young artists, regardless of their socioeconomic status by providing hands-on training in digital and tech-based work, visual arts and new media. Rodriguez credits SAY Sí for encouraging and helping him to achieve his goals and hopes his success story will inspire others to do the same.

SAY Sí and Alamo Colleges District offering free art kits to the community

With the start of summer upon us, SAY Sí has once again partnered with Alamo Colleges District to provide community members with free art supplies for kids. Free art supply bags will be available for curbside pickup for parents with elementary- and middle school-aged children on a first come, first served basis while supplies last; limit two kits per car. Those interested in receiving an art supply bag can complete the interest form online. This June, SAY Sí will host their annual Small Scale • Big Change fundraiser from June 1 – 17, 2021. Over the span of 16 days, the nonprofit youth arts organization will virtually auction off pieces of art that were created by both student artists and celebrated artists from around San Antonio. This year’s theme is Comunidad y Arte (Community & Art) and the auction will include over 150 diverse pieces from local artists, with 50% of proceeds going directly back to participating artists and support of SAY Sí’s tuition-free programming. SAY Sí Announces March community programming

This March, San Antonio nonprofit SAY Sí is offering area students and educators the opportunity to recognize local teachers and engage with the arts, in addition to enlisting feedback from the San Antonio community on the nonprofit’s latest efforts. (SAY Sí, 2021)

With Spring Break just around the corner, SAY Sí has partnered with the Alamo Colleges to provide community members with local and virtual resources that everyone can enjoy, including free art supplies for kids. Free art supply bags will be available for curbside pickup for parents with elementary- and middle school-aged children on a first come, first served basis this weekend; limit two bags per car. 1,250 art kits will be available for pickup from the Palo Alto College Arts Center from 4p.m. – 6p.m. on Friday, March 5, 2021, and another 1,250 art kits will be available for pickup from 10a.m. – Noon at the ACD District Support Operations building (2222 N. Alamo St.) on Saturday, March 6, 2021. Those interested in receiving an art supply bag should complete an interest form. Each kit will include a transportable bag with watercolors, markers, glue, a sketchbook, pipe cleaners, and sidewalk chalk. The community can consult SAY Sí online for additional ideas for at-home art projects.

Now through March 21, 2021, San Antonio students in grades Kinder-9 can submit original portraits of their teachers for a chance to win a $100 H-E-B gift card, (for the educator) as well as an art kit for their class (supplies for a class size of 25). A total of 10 teachers will be selected, one educator per grade level, and will be chosen by SAY Sí staff. To enter, students can visit here to fill out their application and upload an image of their original artwork, as well as explain why their teacher should be chosen. Any medium is accepted, including painting/drawing/coloring, photography, mixed media/collage, song/spoken word, written poem, sculpture, comic, digital drawing, or other creative outlets.

SAY Sí is also offering the San Antonio community an opportunity to win an H-E-B gift card by completing their community impact survey. To enter for a chance to win an H-E-B gift card, entrants must be 13 years of age or older. Four winners will be chosen on Monday, March 22, 2021; gift card amounts are valued at $10, $15, $25 or $50. 

In 2019, SAY Sí announced its relocation to the Westside of San Antonio with an all new, expanded campus. The new location, a former industrial warehouse located at 1310 S. Brazos, boasts nearly 98,000 square feet of space that will allow for the integration of three new programs into their existing offerings, including: Culinary Arts, Digital Music Composition and Journalism. SAY Sí’s diverse programming and state of the art technology and resources make the arts program one of the best in the world. While currently closed for in-person programs and community visits during construction, SAY Sí continues to offer virtual programs and resources to encourage participation in the arts from home.
