Spring Break activities at the Briscoe Western Art Museum

Spring into the west without ever leaving the River Walk at the Briscoe Western Art Museum. Normally closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, extended hours during spring break mean the Briscoe will be open 10a.m. – 5p.m. each day March 7 – 18, giving everyone the opportunity to lasso some western fun this spring. With the museum’s location in the heart of the River Walk, it’s the perfect stop for families exploring downtown – and anyone enjoying the St. Patrick’s Day parades and festivities March 16-17. The Briscoe is also hosting its annual Spring Break Roundup March 11-16. Art and craft activities, building with LEGOs, stories and fun capture the excitement and adventure of the West for all ages, while adults can get in on the fun with an evening painting session served with a side of margaritas. The come-and-go family programs includes activities that celebrate the heritage and culture of the American West. Different activities will be available each day, bringing the West to life in a variety of hands-on ways.

Spring Break Roundup is included in museum admission, with no charge for craft supplies and no reservations required. The adults-only painting session is a ticketed event for those 21 and up. Children 12 and under and active duty military members always receive free admission to the Briscoe, making it a wonderful destination for family fun. Caregivers must accompany participating children for each activity.

Spring Break Roundup scheduled programming includes:

Monday – Friday, March 11 – 16: Hands-on Arts & Crafts, 10a.m. – 5p.m.

Head West for hands-on fun any time during the day to make and take fun crafts that tie to the pillars of Western art – cowboys, Native Americans, wildlife and vaqueros, all themes celebrated by the Briscoe’s popular Community Days. Stop in and make bison masks, a fun balancing cowboy or weave your own basket. Families can choose and create one – or all! – of the crafts using the free supplies provided. This is a drop-in event included with museum admission.

Thursday, March 14:  Building the West: Native American Homes, 11a.m. – 2p.m.

Drop by the Briscoe to explore the museum’s collection of Native American paintings and sculptures, then create your own Native American home or village. Honor the environment and the native beauty of the West by using recyclable and found materials to build a tipi, longhouse, wigwam or other type of traditional Native American shelters. Decorate it and take your creation home.

Thursday, March 14: Painting with DiZurita!, 5:30p.m. – 8p.m., $45, $35 for museum members

Kick back and enjoy your Spring Break during a painting session with energetic and charismatic international artist DiZurita. Based in San Antonio, DiZurita tells stories through her art, an everlasting transformation of life experiences. Enjoy a relaxing evening sipping margaritas while painting an agave plant – a Western plant and the source of tequila. Create your own agave acrylic painting on an 11 x 14 canvas in a hands-on session as DiZurita guides guests in creating their own work of art. Registration for this 21+ event is per person and includes drinks and all supplies. Class size is limited, so register today to secure your spot.

Friday, March 15:  Building the West: Stop Motion LEGOs, 11a.m. – 2p.m.

Explore the West at the Briscoe, then create a short stop-motion video with LEGOs featuring the Alamo, a train station or other western scenes found in the museum’s collection. Get imaginative at the LEGO creation station and build your own scenes, then create a video using your own phone or device.

Saturday, March 16: Storytime Stampede: Cowboys, 10:30a.m. – 11a.m.

Families and caregivers of young children can enjoy western fun and stories each month at the Briscoe’s Storytime Stampede. Featuring 30-minute programs designed for young children ages 18 months to 5 years, each event includes stories told and acted out, books read aloud, movement activities, songs and art fun.

The spring break story is “Cowboys”  by Lucille Recht Penner. Learn all about the day-to-day life of a cowboy in the Old West, from round-ups and trail drives to meals around the campfire and nights under the stars. Then make a cowboy hat you can wear home.

Adults bringing children to the Storytime Stampede receive half-off general museum admission and children 12 and under always receive free admission at the Briscoe, turning Storytime Stampede into affordable family fun.

San Antonio Museum of Art hosts Spring Break Free Day

The San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) invites the community to join them for Spring Break Free Day on Tuesday, March 14, 2023. The Museum will have free admission from 10a.m. to 7p.m. and a full slate of family-friendly activities from 10a.m. to 3p.m. (San Antonio Museum of Art, 2023)

Visitors will be able to enjoy story time with the San Antonio Public Library; participate in gardening and planting activities with Gardopia; and pet alpacas from Black Barn Alpacas while youth DJs with the AM Project, an arts and digital music program for kids, keep the music flowing.

Visitors also will be able to take a guided tour of the exhibition Roman Landscapes: Visions of Nature and Myth from Rome and Pompeii, now on view in the Cowden Gallery; go on a scavenger hunt organized by the Phil Hardberger Park Conservancy; learn how mosaics are created with artists Oscar Alvarado and Armando Vasquez; and make leaf texture rubbings with the San Antonio River Foundation. The San Antonio Food Bank’s Mobile Mercado will hold cooking and nutrition demonstrations and provide free, locally grown produce to the first 130 families.

Refreshments will be available from on-site food trucks Love is Sweets, Tastes Like More, Cori Jean Ice Cream, and Akhanay Coffee Roasters.

This spring gather the family and head West with the Briscoe Western Art Museum’s Lil Partners Saddlebags. A fun way to learn about the West, each Lil Partners Saddlebag tells the tale of the West from multiple perspectives and includes six activities for children and families to enjoy. Packed in the Saddlebag is a museum pass admitting two adults to the Briscoe. Children under 12 always receive free admission, making the Saddlebags the perfect way for your family to head West this spring. (Briscoe Western Art Museum, 2021)

Briscoe is extending its monthly “Locals Days” programming to include March 11-14, in addition to its regular monthly third Sunday, March 21. To thank the San Antonio community for its support, “Locals Day” at the Briscoe greets locals with 50% off general admission. As always, children 12 and under receive free admission, as do active duty members of the military, making the Briscoe a terrific spot for local families to enjoy during spring break.

Lil Partners Saddlebags activities include crafting Puebloan-inspired pottery, making a roaming bison torn paper collage, creating Papel Picado, fashioning your own cowboy boot and paper cowboys, as well as western coloring sheets. All the supplies and directions are included along with the museum pass for two, as well as a special one-time 15% discount on children’s items in the Briscoe’s Museum Store so Lil Partners can head home with more western fun to enjoy. Lil Partner Saddlebags are $20 for Briscoe members and $25 for future members. The admission for two alone is a $24 value, making the kits a terrific spring break deal. To pick up a kit, Lil Partners and their families can visit the Museum Store in person or online or call 210.299.4499 to arrange for a curbside pickup. Saddlebags are available through March 31 and can be shipped for an additional fee.

A must see for all ages – and the perfect place to sit and enjoy your Saddlebag crafts – is McNutt Sculpture Garden, the Briscoe’s lush public outdoor space featuring a beautiful courtyard surrounded by bronze sculptures that depict iconic figures of the American West. The sculpture garden offers the perfect respite during any River Walk visit, with tables, chairs, and benches to rest and enjoy the view.

Due to COVID restrictions, the Briscoe’s Lil Partners program also offers story times online to introduce little ones to the excitement and adventure of the American West. Museum visitors may enjoy self-guided tours, watch short videos and learn more about the artists behind the works through the Briscoe’s app, available on Google Play and in the Apple Store. Lil Partner activities for children are also available on the app, as well as the museum’s website through the museum’s “Beyond the Briscoe” program. The entire family can enjoy a museum scavenger hunt that explores the museum, play musical match-up or musical bingo, bringing the museum’s extensive collection to life for all ages.

Museum hours, parking and admission details are available online. The museum is operating at reduced capacity with health and safety protocols that require both staff and guests to wear masks as well as visitor temperature checks upon entry.

Free admission to San Antonio Museum of Art for Spring Break

Spring break is coming up soon and the San Antonio Museum of Art is making it easy for families to spend time together. On Tuesday March 14 from 10a.m. to 9p.m. the Museum is having free general admission with planned fun activities throughout the day. (San Antonio Museum of Art, 2017)

Guests will be able to take part in Pattern Palooza, a festival of art activities with painting, drawing and collage from noon to 4p.m. Children can spin records and learn more about digital music with the AM Project Bass Bus, an arts and digital program for children. At 5:30p.m. there will be a guided tour of the exhibition Of Country and Culture: The Lam Collection of Contemporary Aboriginal Art where visitors can learn more about Aboriginal people’s culture and art. There is a $10 surcharge for adults 18 years and up to see this exhibition. Local artist Terry Ybanez will be in the Museum galleries from 6p.m. to 8p.m. and guests will be able to join in the fun and sketch along with him for $10. To finish off the day there will be a sundown screening of Rabbit-Proof Fence (PG), a 2002 Australian drama film about the Stolen Generation. Throughout the day guests will be able to enjoy food from on-site food trucks including Cajun specialties from Cajun on da Geaux, tacos from Hot Burras and festival food from Drake’s Fun Food Truck.

First Thursday at Pearl was created to give guests an evening of family fun and shopping deals. The next First Thursday is March 2 from 5p.m. to 7p.m. Pearl kicks off Spring Break this Thursday as guests will be able to take advantage of in-store specials at Pearl’s boutiques and restaurants and enjoy live music by surf rockers King Pelican.
