The Classic Theatre of San Antonio presents ‘A Raisin in the Sun’

The Classic Theatre of San Antonio is proud to present its first production of the new year for Black History Month, Lorraine Hansberry’s ‘A Raisin in the Sun,’ a timeless piece about the Black experience. Performances will take place at The Classic Theatre of San Antonio’s new performance space at San Pedro Playhouse, the former Cellar Theater. Performances begin on February 8 and close on February 25. Showtimes are at 7:30p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and 2p.m. on Sundays. (The Classic Theatre of San Antonio, 2024)

Lorraine Hansberry’s iconic drama is a powerful theatrical masterpiece that explores the dreams, struggles, and resilience of a Black family living on the south side of Chicago in the 1950s. It weaves a poignant narrative around the Younger family as they grapple with racial discrimination, economic hardship, and the pursuit of their aspirations. As the family receives a life-changing insurance check, their divergent dreams and desires clash, sparking a profound examination of identity, equality, and the American dream. With compelling characters and a stirring narrative, this play explores hope and the enduring human spirit.

The Classic Theatre of San Antonio’s upcoming 15th season promises to entertain and delight audiences in an exciting new way, as the award-winning theatre takes the performing arts on the road to a variety of unique – and at times atypical – “theatre locations” across the city. A primary goal is to create a new innovative and accessible theatre experience that will change the way people view and engage with theatre productions in San Antonio. Here is what The Classic Theatre is bringing to theater goers this upcoming season:

Roosters, September 8 – 25, 2022
Roosters tells the passionate and symbolic story of a family in the American Southwest. The crux of the play is the battle for supremacy between a father, Gallo, who wants to exploit the family’s fighting rooster, which his son has been looking after, and Hector, his son, who argues that they should sell the animal and use the proceeds for family needs.

The Classic’s production of Roosters will be held outside at La Zona, Centro San Antonio’s newest outdoor placemaking space in the heart of the Alamo City. Tickets are currently on sale

A Christmas Carol, December 1-18, 2022
A Christmas Carol recounts the beloved story of Ebenezer Scrooge, an elderly miser who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. Deftly performed by one talented actor at the beautiful and historic Maverick Carter House museum, this lively production is sure to put patrons in the holiday spirit and will feature musical ambiance from some of San Antonio’s most beloved classical music groups.

A Christmas Carol will be showing outdoors at the Maverick Carter House.

Fences, February 9-26, 2023 (Thursday, Friday, Saturday at 7:30p.m. and Sunday at 2p.m.)
An American classic and moving family drama, Fences, is the story of Troy Maxson, a father struggling with the bitterness of the past while supporting his wife and children in 1950s Pittsburgh. This Pulitzer-Prize winning play depicts the evolving Black experience in America and explores what happens when one family’s dreams are deferred.

The Classic Theatre of San Antonio is proud to partner with The Carver Community Cultural Center to bring a production of August Wilson’s, Fences, to the stage.

Bound By Truth, March 2023 a Second Series production
A one time only workshop performance of a new work by local playwright Sheila Reinear. This play tells the story of young Meg Roper, a woman in King Henry VIII’s court. Passion, intrigue, and a matching of wits makes this piece engaging for any history buff. The Classic is proud to present this “Second Series” production to our city featuring local performers and design work from Broadway professionals.

Measure for Measure, May 2023 – San Antonio’s official Shakespeare in the Park experience.
Isabella, a young nun, is asked by a city official, Angelo, to sacrifice her vow of chastity in order to save her imprisoned brother’s life. Measure for Measure is Shakespeare’s most famous “problem play” mixing elements of comedy and extreme drama. This evocative theatre experience continues to ask the viewer to examine what roles women are asked to play in our society.

Peter and the Starcatcher, July 2023, Free Summer Musical
Tony-winning Peter and the Starcatcher upends the century-old story of how a miserable orphan comes to be Peter Pan. Peter and the Starcatcher will be free for the public as a gift to our city from The Classic Theatre of San Antonio. A hilarious musical comedy, Peter and the Starcatcher offers, pirates, mermaids, and family fun for all. Peter Pan themed summer camps for kids will be announced in the spring.

The Classic Theatre presents ‘A Doll’s House, Part 2’

Calling all theatre lovers! The Classic Theatre will kick off its first outdoor production of the year with the Tony-nominated play, ‘A Doll’s House, Part 2,’ which will run from March 10-27, 2022 and stars local favorites Anna Gangai and Vic Treviño. Outdoor and COVID-safe performances will be held Thursday, Friday, and Sunday evenings at the San Antonio Botanical Garden beginning at 7:30p.m. Join us after the opening night performance (Thursday, March 10) for a complimentary glass of champagne, as you meet and mingle with the cast, crew, staff, and board members of The Classic Theatre of San Antonio. The play picks up where the original ‘A Doll’s House,’ created by Henrik Ibsen and embraced by activists throughout the last century, leaves off. And no, you do not have to see the original play in order to enjoy the fiery debate in this rich sequel. Hnath takes away the century-long guesswork of what might have become of our lead character, Nora, after ‘A Doll’s House’ concludes. Wit, artistry, and raw emotion make this piece as impactful as the original drama, especially in this era of “Me too.”

The synopsis of ‘A Doll’s House, Part 2’ from Playbill.com reads, “In the final scene of Ibsen’s 1879 ground-breaking masterwork, Nora Helmer makes the shocking decision to leave her husband and children, and begin a life on her own. This climactic event — when Nora slams the door on everything in her life — instantly propelled world drama into the modern age. In ‘A Doll’s House, Part 2,’ many years have passed since Nora’s exit. Now, there is a knock on that same door. Nora has returned. But why? And what will it mean for those she left behind?”

Enjoy a thought-provoking and extraordinary evening as you watch Nora, one of our most important dramatic heroines, return to the home and family she left all those years ago. What will she find? And what will you find as you reexamine her story?

The Classic Theatre of San Antonio is opening the second season of Theatre in the Rough with ‘As You Like It’ by William Shakespeare. Opening on Thursday, September 9, it will run until Sunday, September 26, 2021. Performed at the San Antonio Botanical Garden, it will be directed by Nick Lawson with performances on Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays at 7:30p.m. with the exception of a performance on Monday, September 20 and no performance on Thursday, September 23. Hypatia, the daughter of a self-made underwear mogul, is bored with the stuffy attitudes of the aristocracy. She is anxious to shape her own new world. Suddenly, an airplane crashes into the family estate. With new and attractive characters thrown into the mix, traditional norms get overturned as women become the ardent hunters and men their hapless prey. This fast-paced romantic comedy is Shaw’s ironic debate about marriage, the “New Woman,” and the distance that exists between parent and child.

Opening this week, The Classic Theatre of San Antonio presents ‘Antigone,’ a dramatic adaptation by Emily Mann from the play by Sophocles. Directed by Kelly Hilliard Roush, performances will be Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays at 7:30p.m. It will run from Thursday April 8 to Sunday April 25 at the San Antonio Botanical Garden, 555 Funston Place, San Antonio, TX 78209. Cast includes Josey Porras, John Boyd, Kacey Roye, Jon Manzke, Neil Redfield, Adam Ochoa, Gypsy Pantoja, and Marisa Varela. (The Classic Theatre of San Antonio, 2021)

Their successor and uncle, Creon, decides that one brother will be buried but the other brother will be left on the field of battle. Their sister, Antigone, finds herself having to choose between what she believes to be right, burying her brother, or following the laws of man and facing death herself. What happens when we are forced to choose between doing what we feel is right and what the world is telling us is right?  What forces us to take a stand? What are we willing to die for?

The Classic Theatre presents A Christmas Carol movie

The Classic Theatre and producer Hunter Arnold unofficially kicked off the holiday season early by announcing that a special filmed version of Charles Dickens’ beloved holiday classic A Christmas Carol, starring one of the finest stage actors of our time – Tony Award® winner Jefferson Mays, will be released worldwide on Saturday, November 28. This streaming video event will benefit The Classic Theatre as well as other community, amateur, regional theaters across the country which have been devastated by the pandemic. Directed by two-time Tony Award nominee Michael Arden, adapted by Mays, Susan Lyons, and Arden, and conceived by Arden and Tony Award nominee Dane Laffrey, the filmed version is based on the wildly acclaimed 2018 production which made its world premiere at Los Angeles’ Geffen Playhouse. Coming up next month at The Classic Theatre of San Antonio is William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Directed by Joe Goscinski, performances will be on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 7:30p.m., it opens Friday October 2, 2020.  Ticket prices range from $24 to $39 and are available online. The play follows this loyal soldier as he seeks the crown regardless of consequences, asking the question what happens when ambition subverts reason in an honorable and loyal man? Cast includes Christina Casella, Carolyn Dellinger, Alyx Irene Gonzales, Emily Huber, Zach Lewis, Jon Manzke, Randee Nelson, Kacey Roye, John Stillwagon and Hunter Wulff.

On Sunday, The Classic Theatre celebrated its announcement of season 13, Theatre in The Rough, with carefully selected cocktail recipes, classic party favors to be delivered to all attendees, performance space reveals, the season 13 line-up of shows and conversations with season 13 directors.
