“Anne of Green Gables” is a 1908 novel by Canadian author L.M. Montgomery and is widely considered a children’s novel even though it is written for all ages. It is the author’s most popular work but she also wrote short stories, poems and essays. After the success of the first book, she wrote a series of sequels with Anne as the main character. They center around the adventures of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan girl who is mistakenly sent to live with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. The original novel has sold more than 50 million copies, has been translated into twenty languages and is taught to students around the world. There have been many film and television adaptations in the past and the most recent one aired on CBC in Canada and will be available to stream on Netflix on Friday May 12, 2017. It stars Amybeth McNulty as Anne Shirley, Geraldine James as Marilla Cuthbert and R.H. Thomson as Matthew Cuthbert.

According to Amazon, “Anne of Green Gables” tells the story of a young orphan named Anne from a fictional community in Nova Scotia who is sent to live with a middle-aged brother and sister.  They initially wanted a boy to help around the farm in the fictional town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. Anne is highly imaginative, eager to please and has a flair for the dramatic. She is also very vain and hates her red hair and thin frame and at first Marilla wants to send her back but ends up changing her mind when Matthew intervenes. Eventually she adapts to her new life in the close-knit farming village and the country school where she makes new friends while excelling in her studies.

Theater review: ‘Finding Neverland’ at the Majestic Theatre

‘Finding Neverland’ is now playing at the Majestic Theatre until Sunday May 7.  Photo: Broadway in San Antonio, used with permission.

Peter Pan is one of the world’s most beloved characters and right now playing at the Majestic Theatre is ‘Finding Neverland,’ the story behind the inspiration for the story of Peter Pan. It is based on the Academy Award winning movie by David Magee and the play “The Man Who Was Peter Pan” by Allan Knee. It is the story of the relationship between playwright J.M. Barrie and the family who inspired ‘Peter Pan or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up.’

After a successful opening night, it is easy to see why “Finding Neverland” is one of those musicals that appeals to all ages. It has the childhood wonder of imagination and the adult themes of perseverance and strength. The show begins with “Welcome to London” as ‘Peter Pan’ is well under way and J.M. Barrie comes onstage, interrupts the show and begins the story of how he got the idea that started it all. Desperate for inspiration, one day he is out walking his dog at the park when he meets four young brothers and their mother. He is fascinated by their make-believe adventures and while getting to know them he sets out to write a play that will astound London theatergoers.

Billy Harrigan Tighe is strong as J.M. Barrie and the children, Ben Krieger as Peter, Finn Faulconer as George, Mitchell Wray as Jack and Jordan Cole as Michael hold up their own alongside the adults and steal every scene they are in. Show highlights are “We Own the Night” and “Circus of Your Mind” where J.M. Barrie’s imagination is unfolding and the audience gets a sneak peek inside his mind. Especially powerful is “Stronger” during which he finally has a breakthrough and has the courage to go after his dreams. Overall it is a must see musical about the power of imagination and proof that people never have to grow up and features mesmerizing visuals, irresistible songs and plenty of laughs. ‘Finding Neverland’ plays until Sunday May 7 at the Majestic Theatre. Tickets start at $30 and are available at the box office.

Book review: ‘Beyond Bedlam’s Door’ by Mark Rubinstein, MD

‘Beyond Bedlam’s Door’ is the new book by Mark Rubinstein, MD. Photo: Barnes & Noble

Mark Rubinstein, MD is a physician, psychiatrist and assistant professor of psychiatry who writes mysteries and thrillers about people driven by forces they cannot control. Some of these thrillers include “Mad Dog House,” “The Lovers’ Tango” and “Mad Dog Justice.” He has also written five nonfiction medical advice books and “Bedlam’s Door: True Tales of Madness and Hope,” a collection of true stories of patients who the author and his colleagues saw in psychiatric consultation. His newest nonfiction book comes out this month and is titled “Beyond Bedlam’s Door: True Tales from the Couch and Courtroom.”

“Beyond Bedlam’s Door,” is a sequel to “Bedlam’s Door” in the sense that he continues with true stories of patients that he has treated. Everyone has a story behind the smile and whether these stories are sad or frightening they all come from a shared human experience. Each chapter is a story of a patient and are as varied as humanity itself. Some of these are “Crossing the Line” and “The Arrangement” but the ones that stand out are “Sidney,” “The Prescription” and “That Terrible Day.”

In “Sidney” Dr. Rubinstein writes how having to take his rescue dog to the office while his apartment was being painted opened him up to the idea of therapy dogs. The subject of dogs comes up again in “The Prescription” when he advised a patient to get a dog to help him ease the unhappiness he was experiencing in his life. While it was not a cure all it allowed the patient to have a renewed sense of purpose and was instrumental in getting him and his wife to become closer. Many people remember where they were that fateful September 11 during the attack on the World Trade Center and “That Terrible Day” is a powerful account of one person’s experience. It is the story of ‘Joseph’ who worked in the North Tower and was seen for conditions related to that day including PTSD and survivor’s guilt.

Each of these stories has a different perspective on what it means to be human. The subject matter is fascinating and easy to understand. It reads like a case studies textbook complete with an afterword following each case that examines the course of treatment and gives a follow up on the patient. There is even a Glossary that explains some of the terms used in the book. Overall, “Beyond Bedlam’s Door” is a must read for psychology enthusiasts and should appeal to readers who enjoy true to life stories.
