Tales from Texas: new cocktail menu at Downstairs at Esquire Tavern

Downstairs at Esquire Tavern, the 2016 basement addition to the James Beard nominated Esquire Tavern in San Antonio, has launched a new cocktail menu. Curated by Beverage Director, Houston Eaves, each drink of the eight-part cocktail series, named ‘San Anto Stories,’ is inspired by a tale that ties into San Antonio’s 300+ years of history. After all, The Esquire Tavern withstands the test of time after opening in 1933 to celebrate Prohibition ending. In true South Texas fashion, the drinks are packed with spirits and flavors popular to its own region as well as Mexico’s, like Ruby Red Grapefruit and Oaxacan Rum. (Downstairs at Esquire Tavern, 2019)

La Tierra De Viejitas ($12) – sun-drenched & oxidized wine, Oaxacan rum, lemon, orgeat

Slayer of Jack Harris ($12)– slayer rum blend, oloroso sherry, butter, honey, lime

Johnson’s Jumper ($12) – championship rum blend, banana, lemon, almond. The championship rum blend is composed of 8 different rums that come from Jamaica, Guyana, Martinique, Panama and the Dominican Republic.
Inspiration: Avery Johnson made the game-winning jump shot to secure the San Antonio Spurs first NBA championship in 1999. The image in the menu is as Cruz Ortiz, the artist who designed the menu, recalled watching that momentous game at the longest bar in Texas.

Battle of Bexar ($14) – high-proof tequila, madeira, aquilino’s ensamble, orange bitters

People of Reason ($14) – manzanilla sherry, pineapple, carrot eau de vie, absinthe

Pavol Real ($14) – cherry & grape brandies, coffee-fernet, lime, ranch cherry wine, egg white

Fiesta Babies ($12) – high-proof tequila, pasubio, grapefruit, pear, tonic water
Inspiration: This festive cocktail was inspired by the uptick of San Antonians born in January each year as a result of their parents’ enjoyment of the revelry of Fiesta, San Antonio’s biggest annual party, the previous April. There are entire families whose children are all born in January, and their parents lovingly refer to them as their Fiesta Babies.

Flood of 1921 ($60)
The Flood of 1921 is punch service for a group of guests. The recipe changes every week or so as Downstairs at Esquire prepares a new batch and bottle of it for service. Currently, the bar is serving a colonial-era inspired punch utilizing cognac, bourbon, rum, sherry and oleo saccharum.
Inspiration: The Flood of 1921, is the greatest disaster Antonio has faced in modern times. More than 1,000 acres city were underwater up to 12 feet deep, including the future site of The Esquire Tavern. It took the magnitude and devastation of the Flood of 1921 to spur the development and creation of what we know today as the world-famous, San Antonio River Walk.

These are just a glimpse of the stories inspiring this one-of-a-kind cocktail program. The entire ‘San Anto Stories’ is a collaboration between Downstairs at The Esquire Tavern, led by Beverage Director, Houston Eaves and San Antonio-based artist, Cruz Ortiz of Snake Hawk Press. Each menu was stained with tequila and hand silk-screened to make each their own singular piece of art.

Theater review: ‘In The Heights’ at the Woodlawn Theatre

intheheightscast
‘In The Heights’ is now playing at the Woodlawn Theatre. From left to right: Jillian Sainz as Nina Rosario, Miguel Ochoa as Usnavi De La Vega, Lisa Decker as Vanessa and Venny Mortimer as Benny. Photo: Woodlawn Theatre, used with permission.

Now playing at the Woodlawn Theatre is ‘In The Heights,’ a musical that takes place over the course of three days in the largely Hispanic-American neighborhood of Washington Heights in New York City. It opened on Friday April 12 and runs until Sunday May 5, 2019. Showtimes are Friday and Saturday at 7:30p.m. and Sunday at 3p.m. The upcoming ASL Night will be on Sunday May 5 with 25% off all tickets with code ASL. Tickets are available online or by calling the Box Office at 210-267-8388. Prices are $30 for adults, $24 for Senior/Military/First Responders and $18 for Children/Students.

‘In The Heights’ is set in Washington Heights and begins as the sun rises on the hottest day of the summer and Usnavi De La Vega (Miguel Ochoa), the owner of a small bodega, introduces the audience to the corner’s diverse residents. This includes Abuela Claudia, (Ana Hernandez) the local matriarch who helped raise most of them and Kevin (Michael J. Gonzalez) and Camila Rosario, (Victoria Nieves) who run the cab company “In The Heights.” Nina (Jillian Sainz), the Rosario’s daughter, is back from her first year at Stanford feeling defeated since she dropped out due to financial hardships. She is considered the “one who made it” and because she feels the weight of the neighborhood on her shoulders, she fears telling her parents the truth “Breathe.” When they eventually find out, they argue and Kevin feels inadequate at not being able to provide for his family “Inutil (Useless).” Everyone’s luck begins to turn when Usnavi’s bodega sells a winning lottery ticket and Abuela Claudia is the lucky winner. She passes away but not before distributing her winnings to help the neighborhood even with the changes it is experiencing. The Rosarios decide to sell the family business to help Nina with her college expenses and Nina finds love with Benny (Venny Mortimer). In the end, Usnavi is planning his future with Vanessa (Lisa Decker), his longtime crush, and accepts his role in the neighborhood and the bodega as his true home. “Finale”

The diversity of the Hispanic community and the challenges that unites them takes center stage in this entertaining musical. Despite life’s challenges, they pull together, fueled by humor and music, and prove that family is more than genetics. The talented cast works well together but Miguel Ochoa shines as Usnavi and Michael J. Gonzalez’ portrayal of Kevin’s complex character shows off his talent. Show highlights include “Breathe” as Nina laments disappointing her family and friends who wanted her to succeed, “Carnaval del Barrio (Neighborhood Carnival)” when the neighborhood celebrates after they learn who won the lottery and “Alabanza (Praise)” after Abuela Claudia passes away and they all set up a memorial outside her home. The latter number definitely pulls on the heart strings. With Fiesta season in full swing, this is the perfect time to catch the musical that celebrates Hispanic culture and music. Some of the dialogue and singing is in Spanish but the universal themes of family, loyalty and love transcends the language barriers and makes “In The Heights” a must-see production.

But as the financial dream gets bigger and tensions rise, where do the pieces for this family’s future fall?

Garrison Brothers Distillery releases award-winning bourbon

balmorheabourbon
Garrison Brothers Distillery re-released their award-winning Balmorhea bourbon this week. Photo: Adam Voorheas and Robin Finlay, used with permission.

Garrison Brothers Distillery, the first legal whiskey distillery in Texas, announced today the second release of their multi-award-winning twice-barreled bourbon and will celebrate with a party at their distillery in Hye, Texas on Saturday, May 4, 2019. Dubbed the Balmorhea Social, the daytime party will feature armadillo races, distillery tours, bourbon flights, bites by Chef Joseph Moreno and live music by Micah Wagner. Distillery gates will open at 10a.m. and the festivities will last until 5:30p.m. (Garrison Brothers Distillery, 2019)

Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible named Garrison Brothers Balmorhea Twice-Barreled Bourbon “American Micro Whiskey of the Year” for 2019. The Garrison Brothers team will celebrate this accolade by releasing the bourbon in a larger format bottle at the party. One lucky attendee will win the chance to join Master Distiller Donnis Todd as he tastes his way through the Garrison Brother’s rick house to find the perfect barrels for the 2020 release of Balmorhea. 55 barrels went into making the 2019 release. One special bottle will be labeled with “#55” and placed on gift shop shelves. The patron who purchases it will win barrel selection rights for the following year. Bourbon lovers are encouraged to keep an eye on Garrison Brother’s Instagram page for teasers and more info.

504 bottles of Balmorhea Twice Barreled Bourbon will be available at the distillery in Hye, Texas, for $139.99 beginning May 4. The remaining 5,496 bottles will be distributed to select liquor stores, bars, and restaurants throughout Texas and the other 26 states and military bases where Garrison Brothers is sold. Bottles will be available for purchase nation-wide the week of May 13.

Balmorhea is named after the majestic West Texas swimming hole and is the only twice-barreled bourbon in the Garrison Brothers family. That means it is aged three years in new American white oak barrels made from wood grown in the Ozarks, then the liquid is transferred to a second new American white oak barrel made from trees grown in Minnesota and aged for another two years. The prized liquid is bottled at 57.5% alc/vol or 115 proof and comes from a sweet mash bill, like all of Garrison Brothers’ releases. Master Distiller Donnis Todd describes Balmorhea as “bourbon candy, frozen fudgesicle bars, amaretto coffee with cream, sticky buns and pecan brittle. Thick white chocolate syrup.”

In January 2019, Dan Garrison, founder and proprietor of Garrison Brothers Distillery, presented the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation with a $30,000 donation from Good Bourbon for a Good Cause, a 501(c)(3) public charity formed by Garrison and his employees. The funds were earmarked for the restoration, preservation and beautification of Balmorhea State Park, which shuttered due to structural damage in May 2018. Garrison Brothers stepped in to host a series of fundraising pool parties and pledged to donate a portion of Balmorhea Bourbon’s sales to repair the shuttered pool. On March 1, 2019, Balmorhea State Park reopened just in time for swimming season.
