Briscoe Western Art Museum celebrates all things cowboy

Lassoing a good time at the Briscoe Western Art Museum’s annual National Day of the Cowboy celebration is taking a pause this year due to COVID-19. Rather than have cowboys and cowgirls crowd the museum’s grounds to celebrate all things cowboy, the Briscoe invites everyone to “Bring Home the Briscoe” throughout the month of July. Part of the museum’s popular Lil Partners children’s programming, “Bring Home the Briscoe” features four weeks of Western Art activities and hands-on art, letting little cowboys and cowgirls immerse themselves in fun. The museum has also created a new program, “Briscoe Buddies,” to share the kits with nonprofit children’s organizations across San Antonio. (Briscoe Western Art Museum, 2020)

Cowboy Fun and More
One of the Briscoe’s most treasured annual events, National Day of the Cowboy, is celebrated on the fourth Saturday of July each year. It traditionally attracts Western fans for a day filled with fun, music and art throughout the museum’s home on the River Walk. With continued safety concerns surrounding social gatherings, the Briscoe decided to create something that celebrates not only cowboys, but all four pillars of Western Art:  wildlife, Native American heritage, Spanish and Mexican heritage and of course, cowboys.

Bring Home the Briscoe:  Summer Fun with a Western Twist
With the Bring Home the Briscoe kits, families can saddle up for arts and crafts, western storytelling and cowpoke games. Choose one theme or go for all four since each kit offers a different excursion through the West. The kits are recommended for children ages 5-10 years old. To purchase a kit, visit the Museum Store, order online or call the Museum Store (210.507.4852) to arrange for contact-less, “river side” pickup outside of the Briscoe. Each take home kit is $20 for members or $25 for nonmembers. Kits are available throughout the month of July.

Briscoe Buddies
The Briscoe traditionally hosts field trips and museum visits for children’s groups throughout the year. To give children the chance to experience the West outside of the museum, the new “Briscoe Buddies” program provides free activity kits to local children’s organizations. Distribution is scheduled throughout July with several community partners including Boys & Girls Club, Haven for Hope, St. PJ’s Children’s Home and Mission Road. To support the Briscoe Buddies effort and give these Lil Partners the chance to “Bring Home the Briscoe,” donations are being accepted and can be made in person at the Museum Store or online.

With our spacious galleries and outdoor sculpture garden, everyone can safely visit the museum. Adding to the museum experience, ‘Bring Home the Briscoe’ includes summer fun that families can explore at home, while our new ‘Briscoe Buddies’ program brings the Briscoe to children’s groups who can’t enjoy field trips to the museum right now.” – Michael Duchemin, Ph.D., President and CEO of the Briscoe Western Art Museum

Hopscotch: Light and Sound art exhibit launches this week

In art news: Hopscotch, a new, uniquely curated immersive art experience created by local entrepreneurs Nicole Jensen and Hunter Inman, is debuting in Austin this week as an interactive pop-up located at 6100 Airport Blvd. From February 14 through March 31, Hopscotch: Light and Sound will feature 13 distinctive installations and showcase works from a variety of local Austin artists, as well as a selection of national and international artists. (Hopscotch, 2019)

Each room in the 10,000 square foot space contains a different exhibit with colorful design elements from LED lights to live videos and music. Hopscotch is constructed by various artists, the majority of which are Austin-based. Every art activation within the project requires participation from guests and Hopscotch: Light and Sound invites guests to explore the surreal surroundings in a playful manner.

Interactive experiences range from controlling the clouds and weather via balloons to painting with light through an infrared brush by hand. Olya, presented by the only international artist, invites viewers into an immersive space of complicated multidimensional structures and light. Infinity Boxes by Matt Elson uses color, lights, and mirrors to construct beautiful boxes that draw viewers in; it’s an optical illusion project that asks visitors to take a closer look at human perception and social interaction, much like the public’s relationship to social media.

Hours of operation for Hopscotch are 4p.m. to 11p.m. on Fridays, 1p.m. to 11p.m. on Saturdays and 1p.m. to 8p.m. on Sundays. Additional hours and dates will be added. Tickets are $23 for ages 13 and up, $15 for children ages 4 to 12 and children 3 and under are free. Hopscotch is 18 and up after 7p.m. For this exhibit, Hopscotch has collaborated with local artists, collaboratives, non-profits and creative brands like Deep Eddy Vodka and neighboring Brewtorium. Hopscotch Austin will also have a bar on site and alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase from Deep Eddy Vodka.

Proceeds from the Light & Sound exhibit will be donated to a local art focused non-profit. Following the limited Austin pop-up series, Hopscotch will be opening in downtown San Antonio for a permanent, new exhibition in late summer 2019 and is set to feature different San Antonio-based artists. More details will be announced at a later date.

Chuck Ramirez: All This and Heaven Too at McNay Art Museum

chuckramirez17
Chuck Ramirez: All This and Heaven Too opens at the McNay Art Museum on Thursday September 14 and will be on display through January 14, 2018.  Photo: McNay Art Museum, used with permission.

Chuck Ramirez was a San Antonio artist and graphic designer whose work includes prints and sculptural installations. His pieces revolve around everyday life and allude to ethnicity, gender, sexuality and religion. This month, the McNay Art Museum presents Chuck Ramirez: All This and Heaven Too to honor the life and career of the iconic San Antonio artist. His large-scale photographs of everyday objects offer a perspective on cultural consumption and waste and the reality of fleeting life and mortality. The exhibition opens on Thursday September 14 and will run until Sunday January 14, 2018. Museum hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10a.m. to 4p.m., Thursday from 10a.m. to 9p.m., Saturday from 10a.m. to 5p.m. and Sunday from 12p.m. to 5p.m. Admission prices are available online.  (McNay Art Museum, 2017)

Ramirez was inspired by opposing themes like life and death and humor and despair. His art explores a personal narrative including his San Antonio upbringing, Mexican-American heritage and HIV status. The exhibition consists of works like Santos, Trash Bag, Quarantine and Seven Days and all explore the human experience. It is co-organized by René Paul Barilleaux, the McNay’s Head of Curatorial Affairs and Hilary Schroeder, 2016-17 Semmes Foundation Intern in Museum Studies. The presentation includes photographs from approximately 20 of Ramirez’ series, Bean & Cheese, a recreation of one of the artist’s early exhibitions at Artpace San Antonio, examples of video and installation work, nine decorated Christmas trees the artist made for friend and patron Linda Pace and other unique artworks.

Visitors will have several chances to interact with the exhibition with Christmas Tree trimming, alternative selfies and sharing about first jobs and dream jobs. Interactive stations include Tree Trimming – decorate a tree with Chuck Ramirez-inspired objects; Check Your Baggage – take an alternate self-portrait, or picture of something personal, at this overhead photography station using the hashtag #checkyourbaggage and Dream Job – visitors can identify their first job, current job and dream job as a way of drawing a line between artist and visitor using the hashtag #mcnaydreaming.

During the Día de los Muertos season, visitors are invited to celebrate and remember loved ones by adding paper marigolds, the traditional Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) flower, to a site-specific altar in the Museum lobby. The McNay’s Día de los Muertos altar, created by artist Carmen Oliver, honors Chuck Ramirez (1964–2010) and will be on display from October 26 through November 5, 2017.
