To help celebrate and kick-off the Halloween season, WB’s vodka specialists have put together a spooky vodka recipe that will work with any of their featured vodkas:
Halloween Eyeball Martini Ingredients: • 2 canned lychees + 1/2 ounce lychee juice from the can • 2 cherries (Grand Island Orchard) • 2 1/2 ounces vodka • 1/2 ounce St. Germain • 1/2 ounce lemon juice
Instructions: 1. Stuff one cherry in each of the two lychees. Skewer the two lychees with an extra-long toothpick. 2. Put lychee juice, vodka, St. Germain and lemon juice in a shaker. Add a handful of ice to the shaker and shake briefly until outside of the shaker condensates. Strain and pour into a martini glass. Garnish with lychee eyeballs.

Pearl is excited to announce various programs and events happening on campus this fall. This coming season, Pearl will host initiatives, an herb festival, and is also collaborating with local artists to create a community altar to celebrate Día de los Muertos. (Pearl, 2021)

Pearl Farmers Market and Pollinator Appreciation Month – October 1 – October 31 Pearl will continue to host the Farmers Market on Saturdays from 9a.m. to 1p.m. and its Makers Market on Sundays from 10a.m. to 2p.m. throughout the fall season. Guests can shop local fresh produce and goods at the nationally recognized Farmers Market each weekend.
In recognition of Pollinator Appreciation Month in October, Pearl is partnering with the Texas Butterfly Ranch to highlight the role pollinators play in the local food ecosystem. Through showcasing products at Farmers Market, sharing digital content, and introducing special signage on property highlighting host plants, Pearl brings awareness to pollinators and their role in making so many things possible.
Herb Festival: Parsley – October 16 The market will also host the 30th Annual Herb Market on Saturday, October 16 from 9a.m. to 1p.m. and will feature specialty herbs and other items. The featured herb of the year is Parsley (Petroselinum). A cooking demonstration is scheduled from 12p.m. to 1p.m. showcasing herbs and how to cook with the herb of the year. There will be activities for adults and children alike, experts to ask gardening questions, and fresh samples to take home.
Día de los Muertos – October 30 through November 7 Pearl continues its annual tradition of celebrating Día de los Muertos (celebrated November 1-2), with a community altar created by local artists and sisters, Manola and Maria Ramirez. The sisters are part of the all-female collaborative space, Lavaca Studios. The altar is dedicated to the San Antonio community and their loved ones who have passed away. The artists will use ethereal elements in the space like cempasúchil (marigolds), papel picado, and strands of tinsel to give visitors the feeling that they are walking into a place of worship. The focal point will be a tinsel heart as the centerpiece of the altar. The altar will be available to the public to view and share remembrances of loved ones from October 30 through November 7. Visitors can participate by lighting a digital candle for their loved ones who have passed.

September is National Honey Month and to celebrate the fuzzy pollinators that gift us with such lovely treats, San Antonio & Austin based Bakery Lorraine is partnering with the National Honey Board. As part of this partnership, the beloved bakery is debuting a limited time Mesquite Honey Macaron that will be available during National Honey Month and throughout the fall. The special macaron is filled with a mesquite honey buttercream and fresh honey. (Bakery Lorraine, 2021)
The new macaron is not Bakery Lorraine’s first venture into the world of honey. The bakery’s indulgent cinnamon rolls are glazed with honey from Gretchen Bee Ranch and their Canelés are also created using beeswax in the molds to help give the pastry a shiny exterior. Educational materials from the National Honey Board will be available at Bakery Lorraine locations throughout the month. The Mesquite Honey Macaron, Cinnamon Roll and Canelé are available at all Bakery Lorraine locations. During the month of September, at Bakery Lorraine’s Pearl location, the proceeds from the bakery’s Earl Grey Macaron will be donated to the Landa Gardens Conservancy.

Calling all local artists: The Harlingen Public Library is kicking off this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month with a virtual art show and all ages are welcome to participate. The deadline to submit artwork for the Virtual Hispanic Heritage Art Show is Monday September 13, 2021 by 8p.m. (Harlingen Public Library, 2021)
