Hotel Emma’s new Dinner & A Book series kicks off on Tuesday August 15 from 6:30p.m. to 8p.m. with the first of four book talks about women writers of the South hosted by Sherry Kafka Wagner. The night’s event will begin with dinner at Supper followed by a cocktail and savory bites in the library where Wagner will be sharing her enthusiasm for Texan Katherine Porter’s work. Katherine Anne Porter is a Pulitzer Prize winner, journalist, political activist and novelist. She is best known for her short stories and the novels “Ship of Fools” and “Pale Horse, Pale Rider.” For those interested, the conversation will continue at Sternewirth over drinks.
This book event is free for overnight hotels guests and $15 for the public. Price includes a cocktail and snacks in the library and entry to Wagner’s book event. Krause’s Café in New Braunfels announces ‘Tasting Tuesdays,’ a weekly event where they will host spirit distilleries, wineries and breweries from across Texas. Every Tuesday from 4p.m. to 6p.m., they will feature a regional spirit and beer or wine paired with food samples from the host kitchen. Guests will be able to sample items from Texas vendors such as Goliad Brewing, Black Eyed Distilling Co., Borne Brewing, Pepe Zevada Z Tequila, Altmeyer & Lewis Brewing Co., Republic Tequila and more. This event is free and open to the public on a first come, first served basis until items run out. There will also be additional food and drinks available for purchase. (Krause’s Café, 2017)

This Thursday August 3, Whataburger restaurants will celebrate the spirit of superheroes with an evening of family fun. San Antonio area families are invited to a Super-Duper Celebration only at the Whataburger located at 516 W Cypress St from 5p.m. to 7p.m. Customers will be able to spend quality time with their little heroes and treat them to a superhero-themed celebration that includes food and giveaways. There will be a balloon artist and a face painter onsite as well as a photo booth and a special appearance from Whataburger’s mascot, Whataguy. This event is to support the mission of the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio which provides specialized programs and extends whole-health treatment to children. A donation to the organization will be presented. Children 12 and under dressed in a superhero costume will also receive a free kid’s meal.

The cocktail menu at Signature Hour changes weekly to showcase the mixology mastery of the restaurant with a rotating menu of hand-crafted specialty cocktails, beer and wine. The bar has approximately 50 scotches from single-malt to blended, including the rare Gaelic scotch Ice God, with only 30,000 bottles existing in the world. The vast bourbon and rye collection includes many hard-to-find selections, including Hibiki 21-Year-Old and Whistle Pig Boss Hog Single Barrel. Signature Hour has menu options that include a savory selection of menu favorites such as the ever-popular Deviled Egg Potato Salad, Gold Leaf Risotto, Signature Petite Burger with fried egg and pickles, charcuterie and new items such as Mumbai-Style Lamb with curry and Black Truffle Laneh and La Reve Wasabi Oysters. Chef Andrew Weissman has teamed up with Executive Chef Laurent Rea to create a French-inspired weekend Brunch menu with Texas influences. The menu offerings include an authentic French toast made with challah bread, a true New England-style lobster roll and French style omelet and diners can choose between mixed-mushroom, lobster, crawfish or smoked salmon, prepared with fresh herbs grown in Signature’s garden. Texas influences include a breakfast burger stacked with Swiss hash browns, apple-smoked bacon atop a house-made brioche roll, creamed chipped beef on a house-made biscuit and Blueberry buttermilk pancakes with warm maple syrup and apple-smoked bacon. Fresh cocktails include a house-made Bloody Mary made with yellow tomato juice, designed to complement brunch offerings.

Whataburger periodically hosts events to help the community and schools. These events have ranged from “Oh Whata Nights” to jalapeño eating contests, drawings and raffles. Coming up this week, Whataburger is hosting an “Oh Whata Night” fundraiser to benefit the YMCA at O.P. Schnabel Park’s Youth Sports programs. Krause’s Café & Biergarten in New Braunfels has been hosting traditional beer stein-holding competitions every Friday this month. Officially called Masskrugstemmen competitions, they are Bavarian strongman/strongwoman tests that have their roots in Germany where participants hold a liter of German beer by the handle, straight out in front of their bodies for as long as they can. The last person still holding his or her liter of beer correctly wins. The Krause’s Masskrugstemmen competitions are sponsored and sanctioned by Hofbrau beer. Anyone can enter and contestants get to keep the liter stein. Entrance fee is $20. The winner of each weekly round will be offered the opportunity to return for the grand finale on Friday July 14 to compete for a chance to go to Las Vegas to participate in the Masskrugstemmen at the Hofbrauhas Vegas. Father’s Day is coming up on Sunday June 18 and area restaurants and businesses are offering specials to celebrate dad on his special day. Some of these include Boiler House, Hotel Emma, Paramour, Southerleigh, Krause’s Café and Twang. Detailed information is available online. (Giant Noise, 2017)
Boiler House will have a specialty Father’s Day menu and regular brunch items served on Sunday. Entrees include Makers and maple glazed baby backs, Mexican corn, bourbon baked bean for $18, smothered pork chops and biscuits-grilled pork chop on buttermilk biscuits, fried eggs, buttermilk gravy for $19 and lobster pot pie for $21. Dessert includes The Homer Simpson-Warm glazed donut, espresso ice cream, Guinness caramel for $8.

La Panadería is a San Antonio favorite known for its variety of artisan breads, pastries and made-from-scratch tortas, soups and salads. On Friday June 9, co-owners José and David Cáceres will open their second location at 301 E Houston St on the corner of East Houston and Navarro Streets, just minutes away from the San Antonio Riverwalk, Majestic Theatre and the Henry B González Convention Center. Business hours will be Sunday through Thursday from 7a.m. to 8p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 7a.m to 10p.m. (La Panadería, 2017)
The new flagship location is 6,000 square-feet and features a state of the art “bread lab” where customers can watch La Panadería’s production and 48-hour fermentation process in action. Menu items will include more chef-driven dessert options, new café items, a new dinner menu featuring open face pepitos, beer and wine. They will also have the usual menu featuring artisan breads and pastries and house made tortas, soups and salads.
José and David Cáceres opened La Panadería in 2014 hoping to share their Mexican heritage with San Antonio. The bakery specializes in handmade bread and pastries inspired by Mexico’s Golden Era. Other influences include French, Italian and American breadmaking techniques and are filled with love, family and tradition as the brothers bring a slice of their childhood in Mexico to San Antonio.
