Glazer’s Beer and Beverage of Texas is excited to announce that Yuengling, America’s oldest brewery and leading craft brand, is bringing the goods to the Alamo City. After a highly-anticipated launch, San Antonio residents and fans across the state can now enjoy the iconic beverage on-tap, at-home or at their favorite destinations throughout South Central Texas where Glazer’s distributes. (Yuengling, 2021)

Yesterday at 11a.m., a Yuengling-branded river barge descended down the San Antonio River Walk, parking in front of Michelino’s restaurant where Yuengling fans, visitors to San Antonio, and locals enjoyed tastings of the Traditional Yuengling Lager and partook in photos in front of the branded barge. Fans cheered “I love Yuengling!” as the barge passed venues along the River Walk. This iconic delivery marked the arrival of Yuengling products being made available in-stores across San Antonio for purchase.

“We are honored to be the distribution partner for The Yuengling Company in Texas and to become a part of the Yuengling family. “For years we have heard the demand for America’s oldest brewery, and we are excited to finally share this iconic beer with our retailers around the state.” – Nicholas Meyers, Portfolio Manager at Glazer’s Beer and Beverage of Texas.

Family owned and operated for more than 192 years, the cherished Yuengling family recipes and proprietary yeast were transported via armored truck over a three-day journey, starting in Pottsville, Pennsylvania and ending in Fort Worth, Texas so that Yuengling’s beers would be brewed locally in Texas to their highest standards of excellence. Fan-favorite brands Yuengling Traditional Lager, famous for its rich amber color, Light Lager 99, Golden Pilsner and FLIGHT by Yuengling, the Next Generation of Light beer with only 2.6 carbs and 95 calories, are now available for purchase throughout the state.

Led by the Sixth Generation Yuengling, Wendy, Jen, Debbie and Sheryl Yuengling alongside their father, Fifth Generation owner Dick Yuengling, the family is excited to finally make their beloved beer available to fans in Texas after years of demand. Fans can rest assured that the Yuengling beers will be brewed to Yuengling perfection here in their new home, and can look out for fun ways the brand plans to engage with Texas fans in the coming months by following along on Facebook, on Twitter, Instagram, and their website.

“It’s an important day for our brewery as we take this large first step in our Westward expansion,” said Wendy Yuengling, Chief Administrative Officer and 6th generation family member, D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc. “On behalf of our entire Yuengling family, we are humbled by the opportunity to bring the goods to the people of San Antonio. The passion these fans have shown for our beer and our brand brings into perspective the nearly 200-years of hard work and perseverance that have brought us to this point in our brand’s history. We continue to be inspired by our fans and past generations to brew the best beer possible, and look forward to continuing to do so in this amazing state.”

Yuengling will be available for purchase at major retailers throughout Texas and through Glazer’s distribution partners. To purchase Yuengling in San Antonio and surrounding areas, customers can use Yuengling’s Beer Finder to secure their goods today.

A long-time supporter of a variety of charities, including many military-based organizations through its Stars and Stripes Program that works alongside Team RWB and Operation Gratitude, as well as its multi-year partnership with TAPS, the Yuengling brand is a perfect fit for Military City U.S.A. and strongly aligns with the mission of Glazer’s Beer and Beverage of Texas to support current and former military members. Glazer’s and Yuengling look forward to partnering on future efforts in San Antonio to support those who commit their lives to defending and serving the U.S.

Formed in September 2020, The Yuengling Company is a Joint Venture between D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc., America’s Oldest Brewery®, and the Molson Coors Beverage Company. Headquartered in Ft. Worth, Texas, The Yuengling Company will drive new market expansion and lead all facets of the business beyond the 192 year old brewer’s existing 22-state footprint plus any future D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc.’s New England expansion. In 2021, Yuengling Company will launch in Texas with Yuengling Traditional LAGER, Yuengling Light Lager 99, Golden Pilsner and FLIGHT by Yuengling.

First impression: Nerve Coffee

Pastry selections during my visit. Topo Chico is also available. Photo: Sandra Cruz

There seems to be no shortage of coffeeshops in Brownsville nowadays, so it does not matter what part of the city you are in, a java jolt is certainly within reach. Such was the case for me recently when I was at North Park Plaza shopping at Amor Y Pan that I noticed a new coffeeshop. Last time I was in the area, I saw construction going on but this time it was open for business – Nerve Coffee. From the outside, it looked clean, organized, and inviting so I decided to get a coffee to go.

The interior is decorated in neutral colors with minimal furnishings but enough tables to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee. At the far corner, there is a retail station where they sell t-shirts and shopping bags with the cute company slogan – “Pa Los Nervios” as well as bagged coffee. With such a cute slogan, you get the feeling that coffee is their number one priority, yet they also sell baked goods and cold beverages. I like that the barista station is close by and out in the open so you can see, or supervise, as your coffee is being prepared. The front counter has samples of their baked goods and during my visit, this included cookies and brownies. I have a feeling the selections change frequently, as with some small businesses. I will have to go back again to verify this.

I knew I wanted coffee, but I was unsure what kind, so the patient cashier guided me with several questions: hot or cold? definitely cold; sweet? Yes, please. Any flavors? I opted for mocha and of course, made with almond milk. It was exactly what I expected – sweet and refreshing because in this South Texas heat, I cannot imagine drinking hot coffee in the middle of the afternoon. I also bought two chocolate chip cookies and lingered awhile to enjoy my coffee and survey my surroundings. I noticed that the majority of the patrons were young, so I get the impression that some do their studies while they are here. Not a bad idea. It might just be a hip place to hang out because a recent Facebook post announced live acoustic music last Saturday. The latte art on their hot coffee is amazing.

Nerve Coffee might be off my usual route, but next time I am in the neighborhood I will no doubt return for an iced coffee and maybe pick up one of their cool t-shirts. Everything is reasonably priced, so it is not out of the question. The customer service is top notch and the baked goods pair deliciously with their coffee. Next time you are craving a treat, stop by and support your local coffee shop. Remember: shop small, shop local. We might just run into each other next time.

These pastries are delicious, sugar free, and low carb. Photo: Sandra Cruz

I am definitely loving my weekly trips into town to discover the variety of options, from restaurants, to coffee shops and bakeries. Even though I am vegan, I have no dietary restrictions like low-fat or sugar free but I like to keep track of restaurants and shops that cater to people who do to help out friends and family. My next culinary adventure took me to Amor Y Pan in Brownsville. It is listed as a lifestyle market and bakery that sells breads and desserts perfect for keto, paleo and vegan needs but they also have healthy snacking options.

It was not hard to find, it is along Expressway 77 and there is plenty of parking, which I love. This alone will guarantee that I will keep going back time and time again. Located on Suite 16, the inside is smaller than I expected, but they make excellent use of the space available. As you come in, the wall to the right is fitted with shelves stocked with grocery must-haves like granola, protein bars, avocado oil, chips, and dressings. The refrigerated section stocks pre-packaged almond flour and nopal tortillas, which are raw and ready to be cooked, and other food items. What drew my attention were the baked goods on the counter ready to go home with me: keto sandwich thins, tella cookies, cinnamon rolls, honey butter biscuits, and conchitas. Most of them were sold out by the time I got there, but I am guessing that is a positive sign. They are labeled and designated as keto, low carb, paleo, or vegan, whichever the case may be. This is a major plus. On my next trip I will try definitely try their coffee.

Let it be known that I have already been back twice. The first time I bought the almond flour tortillas, the nopal tortillas, the Primal Kitchen avocado oil, and two tella cookies. The second time I decided to sample more of the baked goods, so I bought a carrot cake cupcake, an assortment of cookies, and a piece of cheesecake. Everything is delicious and it is hard to tell that the baked goods are sugar free and low carb. The prices are reasonable considering that it is a health focused business. I spent $36.77 on my first visit.

A big thank you to Karime, the friendly and helpful cashier who patiently answered all my questions and guided my shopping for the day. This gem of a market has an assortment of products geared towards the health-conscious shopper. Next time you are looking to satisfy your sweet tooth craving without added sugar or carbs, shop small, shop local, and stop by Amor Y Pan. Save a cookie for me.

Since its inception in 2015, Emmer & Rye has focused on highlighting the depth and complexity of flavor in freshly milled heritage grains. Each specialty pasta features heirloom grains which are grown and milled by Hayden Flour Mills in Arizona and Barton Spring Mill in Dripping Springs. The pasta will be sold in 12oz. packages (about 2 – 3 servings) and the options are Blue Beard Durum Spaghetti, Egyptian Emmer Rigatoni, and Rouge de Bordeaux Strozzapreti. Heirloom grains are milled fresh for house-made pasta, bread, and desserts, and an extensive in-house fermentation program captures flavors at their peak and preserves them for the offseason.

“Pasta is a staple in our house. It is such a simple product—flour and water. When you use heirloom grains for your flour it adds a richness to the pasta that you can’t help but fall in love with. These flavors are something we have played with at Emmer & Rye for five years now. I am really excited to get to bring something that we treasure in the restaurant to your home kitchen.” – Kevin Fink, Executive Chef
