Gloria Gaynor, the Queen of Disco, will be making her San Antonio debut as she headlines the opening concert for The Luxury Weekend at La Cantera Resort & Spa. Set for Friday September 15 at 8:30p.m. the Resort’s grand ballroom will be transformed into a Disco time machine. Tickets are $169 per person or $300 per couple and are available online. The price includes cocktail upon arrival, bottle of champagne for the purchase of one $300 ticket, fashions by Neiman Marcus, art display/sale by AnArte Gallery and light bites from Resort Chefs and visiting Chefs from Mexico – Alberto Senties, Susana Palazuelos and Eduardo W Palazuelos. With a legendary career that spans four decades, Gloria Gaynor has achieved global stardom and musical recognition. She has used her fame to support several charities by donating her time and talent. Recently she earned a bachelor’s degree in behavioral science which she uses in her work with charities and organizations helping at-risk youths and their families. She continues to tour the world with concerts in the United States, Europe and South America and has made numerous television appearances.

Evenings on the Edge at Topaz

The series of popular sunset adult pool parties is back this summer at La Cantera Resort & Spa beginning on June 1 and running through August 10 from 7p.m. to 11p.m. Evenings on the Edge at Topaz are Thursday night events that benefit local charities and feature live entertainment. Guests must be 21 and over and ID is required. (La Cantera Resort & Spa, 2017)

Tickets are $25 and available online and if purchased in advance it includes valet parking. Valet parking at the door is $10. Ticket includes a summer-inspired cocktail, live performances and/or DJ, pop up min spa sessions and Moet Chandon toast at sundown. In the event of inclement weather, ticket will be honored at a future event based on availability; tickets are non-refundable. Ten private cabañas also are available for rent and require 24-hour cancellation. A portion of ticket sales and cabaña rentals benefit local charities. A Topaz Sunset Pass is available for $450 and includes, among other benefits, two tickets to each event, two-day spa passes, valet parking and a welcome cocktail. La Cantera Resort & Spa recently announced the appointment of new Executive Chef Laurent Rea and General Manager Patrick Bean to Signature restaurant. A world class concept, Signature is inspired by Chef Andrew Weismann and Chef Rea and Patrick Bean hope to expand on his unique vision for the resort’s freestanding restaurant and bar. Part of the vision includes creating a gracious, timeless and relaxed Hill Country experience for guests looking for non-traditional alternatives to upscale dining. Weismann began his career in Europe and now back in San Antonio, he has opened seven popular and critically acclaimed restaurants including La Rêve, which was recognized by The New York Times, Bon Appetit, Food & Wine magazine and other renowned publications. Signature is open from 6p.m. to 10p.m. for dinner and reservations are recommended but not required. (Signature, 2017)

Executive Chef Laurent Rea was featured in Best Chefs in American in 2013 and has previously worked in Venice, Italy; Strasbourg, France; Great Britain, New Mexico and Texas. General Manager Patrick Bean is a Texas native who uses classic techniques and Texas touches. The menu includes some of the world’s best ingredients, such as lavender, rosemary and prickly pears picked from Signature’s own backyard. A staff beekeeper cultivates La Canter’s own signature Texas honey and even though the local and organic ingredients may change with the season, quality, flavor and artistry are always a priority in the kitchen.

Next up on the calendar is Mother’s Day and SweetFire Kitchen at La Cantera Resort & Spa is having a Mother’s Day brunch on Sunday May 14 for $65 for adults and $26 for children. Reservations are available through open table or by calling (210) 558-6500. (SweetFire Kitchen, 2017)

Some of the brunch offerings include:

  • The breakfast station: smoked bacon, chicken apple sausage, SweetFire Benedict- smoked ham organic eggs and blood orange hollandaise, Breakfast Quiche – house made ricotta, preserved lemon and charred leeks, roasted red bliss potatoes, roasted peppers, caramelized onions, Waffles, butter, pecans, berries, whipped cream and maple syrup and a made to order Chef’s omelet and egg station.
  • The Raw Bar: oysters on the half shell, crab salad and gazpacho shooters, Old Bay and Shiner Bock poached shrimp, horseradish cocktail, house made hot sauce and champagne mignonette.
  • Cheese and Charcuterie: house cured meats and Texas cheeses, spiced lavosh, seasonal jams and local honey.
  • Salad table: baby romaine, brown butter croutons, shaved parmesan and roasted garlic dressing, bluebonnet green, summer berries, feta cheese and candied pecans, charred broccoli, bacon, almonds, grapes and dill mustard vinaigrette, red quinoa salad, Persian cucumbers, fennel, olives and preserved lemon, seasonal melons and fruit.
  • The bakeshop: pecan shortbread cookies, opera cake and white chocolate coffee ganache, chocolate hazelnut tortes, lemon meringue tarts, eclairs, spring berries and vanilla cream, black financier and pistachio streusel, plum tarts and almond cream, flourless oatmeal banana cakes, vanilla cheesecake and peach cream, chocolate pot de crème, croissant bread pudding and caramel cream.

SweetFire Kitchen is located on the lobby level of La Cantera Resort & Spa and features an open-air style kitchen. Guests can enjoy home style cuisine and signature dishes as well as a full-service bar with unique craft cocktails, an extensive wine list and draught beers.

Many venues around town are offering special Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve menus for guests who would prefer dining out. One of those is La Cantera Resort & Spa whose dining accommodations include SweetFire Kitchen. It is located on La Cantera Parkway and offers guests an authentic Texas experience. Guests can enjoy fine dining at SweetFire Kitchen either on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or New Year’s Eve. (SweetFire Kitchen, 2016)

On Christmas Eve there will be a ‘Twas the Night before Christmas menu from 5p.m. to 10p.m. Reservations can be made through open table or by contacting the concierge at (210) 558-6500. Reservations for eight or more can be made by contacting SweetFire Kitchen at (210) 558-2479. Appetizers include tossed winter greens, roasted butternut squash salad, roasted mushroom soup, baked Gulf oysters, Gulf crab cakes, house made pimento, ricotta, pepper jelly and garlic butter flatbread and wild mushroom flatbread. Main courses include crispy skin arctic char, Filet Mignon, Cider brined pork chop, whole wheat gnocchi, slow roasted prime rib and pan seared sea bass. There is a children’s buffet option for $25 and a dessert option for $15 per person.

The SweetFire Christmas Day Feast will be offered from 11a.m. to 8p.m. and is $65 for adults, $26 for children ages 5-12 and free for children under 4 years old. Reservations can be made by calling (210) 558-2479. The menu consist of a raw bar that includes items like California and spicy tuna rolls, a cheese and charcuterie station that has a selection of local and house made cheeses, a salad table with winter greens, quinoa and kale and wild rice, a carving station with turkey and prime rib, a sides station with broccoli gratin, roasted sweet potatoes, an action station that features made to order risotto and a bakeshop station.

The New Year’s Eve menu consists of action stations for $85 per person. It includes a raw bar with poached Gulf shrimp, Gulf oysters on the half shell and tuna ceviche, an antipasto bar with roasted tomato hummus, basil tomato tapenade and grilled asparagus, a chef’s carving station with smoked beef tenderloin and peppered duck, a winter salad station with warm Montrachet salad and beet and blue salad and a chocolate bar with warm chocolate mellow cake, chocolate tarts and salted caramel tarts.

The holidays are in full swing and La Cantera Resort & Spa, part of Destination Hotels luxury collection, is getting into the holiday spirit. This Thursday December 1 the luxury resort is hosting a free Jazz concert featuring acclaimed smooth jazz saxophonist Paul Taylor who will perform before the annual tree lighting celebration. Guests will be able to enjoy holiday treats and photos with Santa with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of San Antonio. (La Cantera Resort & Spa, 2016)

Guests are encouraged to bring a toy for the Boys & Girls Club and in return will receive a bag of La Cantera freshly baked holiday cookies. The evening’s event will take place from 6p.m. to 9p.m. with Santa lighting the tree at 7:15p.m.
