Teatro Audaz is proud to present its first-ever mainstage musical of Mariachi Girl, an uplifting bilingual production about reaching one’s dreams. Just in time for Fiesta, the production will feature live Mariachi music for every performance, from March 4-13, by San Antonio’s popular Mariachi Azteca de América. (Teatro Audaz, 2022)

Written by playwright Roxanne Schroeder-Arce, Mariachi Girl features vibrant original mariachi music and lyrics by Héctor Martinez Morales. The March 12 performance will include a special “talkback” with the audience by Schroeder-Arce, the cast, and director. The March 12 performance will also be American Sign Language Interpreted with the help of interpreter Robert Cardoza for attendees and their families who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Mariachi Girl:
Ten-year-old Carmencita dreams of being a mariachi singer and one day joining in performance with her father. However, her father clings to a long-held family tradition of male-only mariachis. When Carmencita’s teacher offers her a book about a female mariachi, everything changes for “Cita” as she sees a possibility of her dream becoming a reality. Can she celebrate her own heritage and expand her father’s view of the world?

Weekend performances will be held from March 4-13 with Friday and Saturday showings at 7:30p.m. and Sunday showings at 2p.m. Performances will be held at the Public Theatre of San Antonio’s Russell Hill Rogers Auditorium at 800 West Ashby Place. COVID-19 safety protocols will be put in place with mandatory mask wearing, hand sanitizer stations, and social distancing with seating capacity maxed at 50 percent.

Teatro Audaz’ next performance opens this week at the Public Theater of San Antonio’s Cellar Theatre. Man of the Flesh, by Octavio Solis, is directed by Holly Nañes opens this Thursday, October 28, 2021. Tickets are available now available online and range from $20 for student/military/SATCO/senior/educator to $25 for general admission. (Teatro Audaz, 2021)

A modern comic adaptation of the first Don Juan Play, The Trickster of Seville, Juan is dispatched by this father who owns Pronto Lawn and Garden to work off his sins of the flesh. But at the Downey estate, on the eve of Day of the Dead, he meets the love of his life. But contrary to all the women before her, Anna Downey spurns him. He is determined to declare his love to her, even if he must seduce all the women of the house to get near her.

Theater review: ‘The Panza Monologues’ at the Cellar Theatre

This weekend is your last chance to catch Teatro Audaz’ production of ‘The Panza Monologues.’ Upcoming showtimes are Friday and Saturday at 7:30p.m. and Sunday at 2p.m. at the Cellar Theatre and livestream online. Written by Virginia Grise and Irma Mayorga, ‘The Panza Monologues’ is based on women’s stories about their panzas—tú sabes—that roll of belly we all try to hide. ‘The Panza Monologues’ features the words of Chicanas speaking with humor and candor. Their stories boldly place the panza front and center as a symbol that reveals the lurking truths about women’s thoughts, lives, loves, abuses, and living conditions. Directed by Paula Rodriguez and featuring the ensemble cast of Brizzo Torres, Jojanie Moreno, Isabel DeLaCerda, and Laura T. Garza, it runs an hour and ten minutes with no intermission.

‘The Panza Monologues’ has played across the nation and now it has come home to where it all began. Right from the start, it gives off an unmistakable ‘San Anto’ vibe and is a bilingual narrative of everything having to do with curves. It begins with an introduction by the four ladies onstage stating that women have no problem talking about vaginas, and then give various synonyms for it, yet are hesitant, even shy, to talk about their ‘panzas.’ Their battle cry is “Panza Power!” The production includes the sections ‘Historia’ (an ode to shoes – ‘tacones’ and female empowerment), ‘Hunger for Justice,’ ‘Noticias’ (sobering facts about how people have gotten fatter and San Antonio is seen as one of the fattest cities), ‘Praying,’ ‘Panza Power,’ and ‘Political Panza.’ It ends with a party-like atmosphere and all four ladies return onstage to urge women to be proud of their curves, or ‘panza proud.’ As they proclaim: “When all else fails, power to the panza.”

Overall, ‘The Panza Monologues’ celebrates women and urges them to love their curves. One of the funniest and most relatable moments is when one of the ladies uses a pair of pliers to try to adjust her jeans – definite grade A performance. The show does an excellent job of balancing humor, history, and more serious topics such as ‘the diabetic mom’ – how she developed diabetes and how it affected the family. The real conversation starter must be the debate between Cubans and Mexicans where the question that hangs is “If obesity is synonymous with capitalism, then why is San Antonio one of the poorest and fattest cities around?” It also uses poetry to convey the frustrating and challenging ways that women feel about their bodies. While the main topic is how women should accept and love themselves, it also touches on obesity, diabetes, and income inequality and hopefully it will spark a conversation to bring about much needed changes in our society. There is moderate cursing, but it does not distract from the message. ‘The Panza Monologues’ is a must-see production filled with humor and relevant social issues with excellent performances by everyone involved.

Notes on the livestream: sometimes it is hard to hear the dialogue when there is music in the background.

Teatro Audaz is excited to announce their return to live theatre and the final show of their 2020/21 season with ‘The Panza Monologues’ directed by Paula Rodriguez. ‘The Panza Monologues’ returns home to where it all began. It opens Friday August 13 and will run until Sunday August 22, 2021, with performances on Friday and Saturday at 7:30p.m. and Sunday at 2p.m. at the Cellar Theatre. All performances will be live and streamed live online. Ticket prices range from $15 to $25 and will only be available online. All live shows are at 50% capacity and all guests who attend a live performance must wear a mask. (Teatro Audaz, 2021)

Since its inception in San Antonio, Panza has played across the nation (East, West, North, South) but now it is coming home to where it all began. Teatro Audaz is putting it back into the bodies and lives of San Antonio women and onto San Antonio land to revisit and reconnect with the lives of women in San Antonio who first inspired this project/play. They bring it back to San Antonio to explore the issues of obesity, diabetes, food deserts…income inequality, all STILL prevalent in San Antonio…ten years on, what remains the same? What do we still need to change?

Mark your calendars, clean your paint brushes, and ready your canvases. Teatro Audaz presents ‘Frida Vice Versa’ by Marian Licha and R. Dennis Green. Starring San Antonio’s Victoria Gutierrez and directed by Laura T. Garza, this will be a LIVESTREAMED PERFORMANCED only. This San Antonio and Texas premiere production will run from Thursday February 18 through Sunday February 28 with showtimes on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:30p.m. and Sunday at 2p.m. Tickets are available online. All performances will be in English and streamed live from The Public Theater of San Antonio‘s main stage. Audience members will be able to enjoy from the comfort of home or wherever they choose. In ‘Frida Vice Versa,’ the legendary Mexican painter Frida Kahlo’s unconventional art class, the first lesson becomes the final lesson; death can be life and vice-versa. Frida inspires her students to live life with passion. Her teaching unfolds as a personal story — packaged as ten “lessons.” It reveals itself with the black humor of tragedy, accidents, opposites, and irony that have ruled her memorable life. In this one-woman show Frida Kahlo’s spirit prevails. Although a product of a patriarchal society, Frida finds her identity, passion, and love by becoming an artist in her own right.

Teatro Audaz proudly presents the award-winning production of ‘(Un) Documents’ by Jesús I. Valles. It is directed by Rudy Ramirez and opens on Thursday November 12.  It runs until November 14 with performances at 7:30p.m. (live-stream) and on November 15 there will be a streamed recording matinee show at 2p.m. Tickets are available online and are $15 for military/student/senior and $20 for general admission. ‘(Un) Documents’ –  With a single phrase, you can give up your country. With a single signature, you can tear a family apart.  With a single word, you can learn to transform. In their first full-length solo show, ‘(Un) Documents,’ award-winning actor and poet Jesús I. Valles journeys across both sides of a river with two names, moving between languages to find their place as a child, a lover, a teacher and a sibling in a nation that demands sacrifice at the altar of citizenship. In doing so, they create a new kind of documentation written with anger, fierce love and the knowledge that what makes us human can never be captured on a government questionnaire.

‘(Un) Documents’ is a multiple B. Iden Payne Award winner for Outstanding Actor in a Drama (Jesús I. Valles), Outstanding Director of a Drama (Rudy Ramirez) and Outstanding Original Script. It is also an Austin Critics Table Award recipient for Excellence in Direction (Rudy Ramirez) and it was named one of Robert Faires’ Top 10 Theatrical Treasures of 2018 in the Austin Chronicle.

Curanderas & Chocolate: Cuentos of a Latina Life opens September 30

Coming up at Teatro Audaz is Curanderas & Chocolate: Cuentos of a Latina Life by Patricia Zamora. Directed by Teatro Audaz Artistic Director Laura T. Garza, it will be staged at The Public Theater of San Antonio.  This one-woman show is written and performed by San Antonio, Texas Playwright and Actress Patricia Zamora, featuring stories of love, loss and hardship.  Funny, poignant and sometimes heartbreaking, this autobiographical show highlighting faith healers and religious candles will resonate with all audiences.  The play features seven colorful characters who explore the concept of faith and healing.  All performances are in English and will be livestreamed for guests to be able to enjoy a live theater performance from the comfort of home, or any other location. Once live audiences are allowed back in the theater, livestreamed performances dates will be available as well. (Teatro Audaz, 2020)

Teatro Audaz’ ‘The Taming of the Shrew’

Teatro Audaz San Antonio’s next production is William Shakespeare’s ‘The Taming of the Shrew.’ Teatro Audaz gives this classic battle of the sexes tale a Latinx twist. Set in a Texas border town in 2018, this production cautions audiences to be careful what they wish for and invites them to come and find out who is taming who. In collaboration with Teatro Palo Alto. Thursday January 10 through Saturday January 12 at 7:30p.m. and Sunday January 13 at 2:30p.m. Tickets are $15 and are available online. It is directed by Laura T. Garza and stars Victoria Gutierrez as Grumio, Olivia Guerras as Bianca, Ruby Lopez as Wife/Kate and Gabriel Itzcoatl Luera as Sly/Petruchio.

Word around town has it that Teatro Audaz’ ‘Aye, No!’ is a hilarious and poignant production. It sold out during its run at The Public Theater’s Cellar Theater this month, so it is back by popular demand for an encore presentation for one night only at Woodlawn Pointe on Friday August 31 from 8p.m. to 10p.m. Tickets are $15 to $20 and are available online but are going fast. Do not miss a chance to catch this show written by Liz Coronado-Castillo and directed by Laura T. Garza. Cast includes Miranda Valdez, Jaime Gonzalez-Quintero, Nora Moreno-Jarrell, Brizzo Torres, Karlyn Buchaus, Ivan Ortega, Louie Canales, Ray D. Seams and Christian Gomez. The show is bilingual, 90% English, 10% Spanish.

‘Aye, No!’ takes place in a small town, where young Alicia comes home from college with a ‘friend’ for her family to meet. The trouble begins when her loving grandma and well-intentioned, yet nosy aunts assume that Alicia is bringing home a boyfriend or fiancée. Alicia, wanting her family’s acceptance and fearing ancient Mexican magic, turns to her three fairy-drag-queen friends for guidance.
