Cascade Languages learning site

Cascade Languages is a website for anyone looking to learn a new language, either Spanish or French. Photo: Cascade Languages.

Cascade Languages is an Australian education and publishing company. They teach languages using stories and art. Their mission is to turn language learning into entertainment. Their goal is to show that learning a language does not need to be boring. (Cascade Languages, 2022)

Their approach: “We do things differently. Whatever you are used to, whatever you are expecting, we don’t do things that way. Give us a few minutes and we will teach you a new language and use that language to entertain you.”

The languages include Spanish and French. Pricing plans are the Basic Plan – $0 and once you sign up, it is valid for six months and includes free access to Stage 1 of all languages; and the Standard Plan – $10 every month and includes access to all the content on the site.

I recently got a chance to sample the French lessons. It is easy to sign up for the free portion. The French menu consists of five stages: Stage 1 – where it all begins, Stage 2 – a continuation of stage one; the adventure continues, Stage 3 – more stories, more comprehension, Stage 4 – some more stories with comprehension guarantee through repetition, Stage 4 – Classics with a twist, Stage 5 – The Princess, and Stage 5 – Smorgasbord, which is basically everything else, from food items, to animals.

Overall, the site is user friendly and easy to navigate. The lessons are short and to the point without any unnecessary filler and the comprehension level is high through the use of repetition. Since I already speak Spanish, I wanted to try the French lessons even though I have a basic understanding since I took French in high school. Perhaps this made it easier to understand and there is no way of knowing if someone who has no previous French knowledge will find it as easy to learn. My review of the site is mainly how user friendly it is and the methods used in teaching the language. I found it easy to use and highly effective as a refresher course and in expanding my understanding of the French language. I would certainly recommend it to someone looking to learn a new language or to refresh their knowledge of Spanish or French.

Upcoming album release: Andrew Duhon’s Emerald Blue

‘Castle on Irish Bayou’ is the first single from Emerald Blue. Courtesy photo, used with permission.

“The more I love, the less I trust in money / The more I get to know the soul of my fellow man,” sings New Orleans’s prodigal Americana son Andrew Duhon in the opening song of his new album Emerald Blue, due out July 29, 2022. Empowered by a wealth of songs crafted and collected throughout the great shutdown and inspired by adventures well-beyond his home in Orleans Parish, Duhon put his poetry in motion and nailed down eleven tunes representative of his view of the world in its current state: politically, socially, and personally. “The more I travel, the more I feel that I’m a man without a country / Is there truth in the story of the promised land?” But Duhon’s deep well of influences—from John Prine and Jim Croce to his city’s greats like Dr. John and Allen Touissant and beyond—and his sense of songwriter self-awareness keep what could have been a sad recollection of his forced time-off impressively light and grooving, a skill that his Louisiana predecessors have been refining for centuries. (Andrew Duhon, 2022)

Duhon released a music video for Emerald Blue’s first single, “Castle On Irish Bayou,” a thumping, bottleneck slide guitar-carried ode to escaping Midcity living for an actual, albeit modestly-sized, castle outside of New Orleans. It is one of Emerald Blue’s lighter commentaries. Admittedly more clever than true, “Castle On Irish Bayou” is infectious enough to convince even the most discerning real estate investor to uproot and move into the majestically out of place dwelling. “As I’m getting old enough to consider graduating from living under a landlord, the real estate prices just about everywhere in town scare me to the outskirts, and get me thinking about what’d be like to be ‘king of the Irish Bayou,’” jokes Duhon, but the resulting song will surely plant the same idea in the heads of listeners worldwide. Fans can now watch the “Castle On Irish Bayou” music video and pre-order or pre-save Emerald Blue here ahead of its July 29 release.

The tracks on Emerald Blue show serious time spent in listening mode—both to himself, and to the world around him. From the rich Americana twang and propulsive, clacking percussion of “Promised Land” to the vintage rhythm-and-blues grooves of “Digging Deep Down,” Duhon meditates on what it means to be present and true, whether to yourself and your ambition (“Down From The Mountain” and “As Good As It Gets”) to a lover (“Southpaw” and “Plans”) or to a wider world whose fraught and violent track record demands meaningful acknowledgement, reckoning, and change. The meditative “Everybody Colored Their Own Jesus,” is an appreciation of some basic wisdom from his church-school days: that faith, respect, and love are boundless and have no particular colors, traits, or rules. These are songs that come from a very particular time and place, when so many of us—often alone with our flaws and feelings, with few of our regular, dependable distractions—were forced to face hard truths. And yet, using the time-tested language of folk, of the blues, storytelling and soul-searching, voice and keys and strings, Andrew Duhon proves himself worthy of heroes like John Prine—who makes a fantasy cameo in “As Good As It Gets,” the album’s closer—by similarly crafting four-minute worlds in song, that feel purely timeless, as old or as young as the chronic condition of stumbling across Earth with a human heart.

Emerald Blue shows us the vast worlds that can be discovered and traveled when we sit still, and the breathtaking vistas on view when we look within—or at the people right beside us.

Book spotlight: ‘Mindless Behaviors: Breaking Through Unseen Barriers’ by Beatrice Adenodi

Beatrice Adenodi sheds light on the mindless behaviors fueling the ongoing mass shooting and gun crisis in the United States. Photo: amazon

Beatrice Adenodi is a storyteller, a sought-after business leadership consultant and speaker, and a first generation Nigerian American. Her unique practical marketing perspective gives her the ability to recognize the mindless behaviors that prevent people from reaching their untapped, limitless potential. Through her unique position, Adenodi helps professionals, business owners, and anyone ready to confront their own mindless behaviors by acting as an interpreter of the unseen – guiding them from being reactive to reflective. Adenodi reveals – in a direct, no-nonsense approach – the reality of what is holding people back and blocking them in their professional and personal lives. She is the founder of Mirror Inc. as well as the author of “Mindless Behaviors: Breaking through Unseen Barriers.” (Beatrice Adenodi, 2022)

Adenodi has a message for Americans to help bring an understanding to the country’s ongoing mass shooting and gun crisis. Using her insights, observations, and expertise in identifying people’s mindless behaviors, she identifies the reasons there are so many shootings in the United States. Instead of being reactive and casting blame, she suggests considering the mindless behaviors that keep the country in an endless cycle of blame, with no actual accountability.

Adenodi does not expect political leaders and elected officials to like her insights. “Leaders aren’t really there to find solutions; they are there to keep their jobs. Think of it this way, leaders are only needed in societies of chaos. A never-ending cycle of gun violence and upheaval as factions fight for their political agenda means politicians have job security. They have no incentive to do something until we the people demand it.”

Compounding the issue is the media’s response when gun violence erupts, as well as the underlying perceived threat of taking people’s guns away. This, along with the mental health crisis and the emotional toll communities bear in the aftermath of shootings, makes for a society rife with mindless behaviors.

Adenodi’s book, “Mindless Behaviors: Breaking Through Unseen Barriers,” brings to light seven examples of reactive, negative cycles of human behavior and the importance of effective communication in our life. Going through the experience of these stories, readers learn that if they change the way they think about a situation and their actions, they have the potential to completely transform their lives. This book inspires people to broaden their horizons, recognize their unconscious prejudices and unleash latent potential.

“’Mindless Behaviors’ is relevant to the challenging times in which we live. It provides a starting point for becoming aware, and plants the seeds of transformation to help us grow. This book is for people who find themselves in repeatable patterns in their lives, who are looking for ways to ‘unstick themselves.’ My book is not telling the reader how to live their life or what to do in a situation, but it offers multiple perceptions on how to navigate through challenging conditions which is what we need in the world.” – Beatrice Adenodi

The book is available for purchase on Amazon or on Mindless Behaviors.

New exhibit at the Briscoe Western Art Museum

The Sons of Charlie Russell: Cowboy Artists of America premieres at the Briscoe on May 27 and runs until September 5, 2022. Photo: Briscoe Western Art Museum, used with permission.

A cowboy saddles up his horse, drives cattle from one pasture to another, gets down from his horse, and picks up a paintbrush. He is not doing typical ranch work as he stands in front of an easel, painting a scene inspired by the trail. He is authentically preserving and perpetuating Western life’s culture through fine art. Dedicated cowboy artists are the foundation and the future of Western art, showcased at the Briscoe Western Art Museum May 27 – September 5 with the premiere of  The Sons of Charlie Russell:  Cowboy Artists of America. (Briscoe Western Art Museum, 2022)

An art form as uniquely American as jazz music, Western art has long defined the American West worldwide. Illustrating the lives, landscape, and wildlife that define the West fueled storied artists like Charles M. Russell, Frederic Remington, Edward Borein, W.R. Leigh, and Frank Tenney Johnson. Together, they then defined the look and style of traditional Western art and inspired the Cowboy Artists of America (CAA).

Spotlighting those founding fathers of Western art alongside the CAA artists who have safeguarded the traditional style of the genre, The Sons of Charlie Russell traces the roots and successive artwork of the Cowboy Artists of America and defines a core set of criteria for what constitutes traditional Western art. Encompassing 70 paintings, sculptures and works on paper dating from 1890 to the present day, the exhibition includes works typically only seen in private collections and never before exhibited together. Displaying the strength and vibrancy of the genre through the masterpieces of 40 artists, The Sons of Charlie Russell offers a rare opportunity to see contemporary art along with historical works.

Curated by Emily Wilson, the Curator of Art for the Briscoe, The Sons of Charlie Russell features works from 17 lenders including the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, the Booth Western Art Museum, the Eddie Basha Collection, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and the Sid Richardson Museum, as well as private lenders from Texas, Arizona, Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming, making the exhibition the first and only time these works will be viewed together. Nine of the featured pieces are sourced from the Briscoe’s permanent collection.

Shadows of the West:  Interactive Elements Add to the Experience

While visitors may not be able to rope and ride alongside the cowboys and ranch hands often depicted in Western art, thanks to immersive technology in the exhibition, The Sons of Charlie Russell allows visitors to literally add themselves to the scene. Visitors can virtually step into three works featured in the exhibition: “Rawhide Rhapsody by Charlie Dye (1906-1972),” “Texas Cattleman – Oil Man” by George Phippen (1915-1966), and “Pony Tracks and Empty Saddles” by Tom Lovell (1909-1997). Visitors will be able to see themselves as shadow outlines in the paintings, striking poses as they add themselves to the scene and find responsiveness to a few actions – such as strumming a guitar.

To help visitors learn more about Western art, the exhibition’s guide gives visitors the skills to interpret and evaluate works in the genre. After touring the exhibition, visitors can apply their art evaluation skills and vote on which art best illustrates the four categories explored in the guide: originality and uniqueness, technique and application, composition and subject matter, and aesthetic awareness. Different paintings will be featured throughout the exhibition’s run, allowing visitors to evaluate new paintings each month.

Cowboy Artists of America:  Riding Together

Author and Western art scholar Byron Price’s book inspired the exhibition’s title, “The Sons of Charlie Russell.” The book commemorates 50 years of the Cowboy Artists of America, a membership organization of individual artists committed to authentically preserving and perpetuating the culture of Western life through art. Members of the CAA work to ensure authentic representations of the life of the West past and present. Many of these accomplished, award-winning artists are cowboys themselves, living the cowboy life as they work their own land and cattle.

The Sons of Charlie Russell Opening Celebration

To mark the exhibition’s opening, the Briscoe is hosting a series of events May 26-28, followed by monthly gallery talks and art demonstrations featuring current CAA members, including the museum’s annual National Day of the Cowboy celebration on July 23.

Hundreds of collectors and corporations have his paintings in their permanent collections, as well as The Booth Museum, the James Western Art Museum and the Briscoe. Included in museum general admission.

10a.m. to 1p.m. Live Painting Demonstration:  Narrative Western Painting

Dudash will demonstrate and discuss the various approaches and painting techniques he uses to create his narrative western paintings. He will teach how to create a successful painting through dynamic design by prioritizing the position of the subjects and elements, effectively posing figures and animals, how to use color and value, making proper landscape choices, and adding “atmosphere and dust” to give a work of art an emotional lift.

2:30p.m. to 4:30p.m. Talk by C. Michael Dudash, “Illustrations’ Influence on Western Art”

Dudash will share illustration examples from the late 1800s to the year 2000 that have influenced Western Art’s biggest names and trends throughout the last 150 years. Understanding this subject will enhance one’s appreciation and enjoyment of the contemporary Western art being created today.

The Sons of Charlie Russell: Cowboy Artists of America is supported in part by Jan McCaleb Elliott, the Eddie Basha Collection, Mr. and Mrs. Marrs McLean Bowman, The Elizabeth Huth Coates Charitable Foundation of 1992, the Klesse Foundation, Jessica Elliott Middleton, Debbie and John T. Montford, Western Art Collector.

Preserving and presenting the art, history and culture of the American West through engaging exhibitions, educational programs and public events reflective of the region’s rich traditions and shared heritage, the Briscoe Western Art Museum is located on the San Antonio River Walk at 210 W. Market Street in the beautifully restored 1930s former San Antonio Public Library building. Named in honor of the late Texas Gov. Dolph Briscoe Jr. and his wife, Janey Slaughter Briscoe, the museum includes the three-story Jack Guenther Pavilion, used for event rentals and programs, and the outdoor McNutt Sculpture Garden.
