From eco-friendly dog treats to sustainable dog accessories, The Puppy Gazette has all the information you need to care for your dog while caring for the planet. Photo: Google/Bliss Planet
Earth Day is an annual event held globally on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection and promote environmental protection and climate action. The theme for this year’s Earth Day is Planet vs. Plastics. In the spirit of Earth Day, I’d like to shine the spotlight on a recent article from The Puppy Gazette about the importance of eco-friendly dog food when it comes to reducing our beloved dogs’ environmental footprint. It emphasizes various earth friendly ways to care for them including natural dog grooming products and eco-friendly dog housing and bedding.
Earlier this month I introduced you to Allen Kimble’s website The Puppy Gazette. His goal is to be your new source for dog related information. If you are one of a growing number of global citizens concerned about your carbon footprint as well as a dog parent, there are ways to ensure that how we care for them is also eco-friendly. In the recent article, “Eco-friendly Dog Food for a Reduced Environmental Footprint,” he breaks down everything you need to know regarding dog care to make sure it is as environmentally friendly as possible.
I was impressed by the number of ways we can help reduce environmental damage while also caring for our dogs. Some of them I have heard of before, but I admit, some of these ideas are new to me. I will summarize them below but check out the article for more details.
• Eco-friendly Dog Treats Yora Pet Foods – insect protein Jiminy’s – crickets Wild Earth – high quality plant proteins Chippin – planet-friendly proteins Yarrah – organic, healthy, and sustainable dog food Beco – grain-free dog food Pezzy – pet treats made exclusively from invasive fish found around Mexico • Pet Biodegradable Waste Management ATIFBOP dog poop bags MUAMUA Biodegradable Dog Poop Bags Walker Good Boy Poop Bags Doggy Do Good Compostable Waste Bags • Natural Dog Grooming Products Earthbath Oatmeal & Aloe Shampoo and Conditioner Set Earthbath Oatmeal & Aloe Grooming Wipes • Eco-friendly Dog Housing and Bedding New Age Pet Pet Crate West Paw’s eco-friendly beds • Sustainable Dog Toys and Accessories West Paw Zogoflex Hurley Dog Bone Chew Toy Beco Pets Hemp Rope Jungle Ring Toy
These products come from companies that are committed to producing quality pet products that minimize environmental impact. This is excellent news for pet lovers who also care about the planet. From dog food to dog toys, nowadays there are more options available so we can rest assured that we are doing all we can to care for the planet and reduce our carbon footprint. What I found most interesting is the biodegradable dog poop bags, as opposed to plastic ones that can take hundreds of years to decompose. So take a few minutes to peruse the information in the article and while you are there, check out all the other outstanding articles. It has so much useful information.

The free community festival features storytelling, artist demonstrations, pottery and carving, as well as Native American-inspired food, including REZR’vation Only, a food truck featuring Native American-inspired cuisine that is owned and operated by a registered member of the Navajo Nation. Yanaguana Indian Arts Festival also features workshops and lectures celebrating traditional and contemporary Native American culture. The event starts with a special blessing, followed by a ceremonial drum circle that invites everyone to join.
The annual event is named in honor of the Payaya people who were indigenous to the San Antonio area. “Yanaguana” was the word they used to describe what is now known as the San Antonio River. The festival has been held annually since the museum opened.
Yanaguana Indian Arts Festival highlights include:
An opening spiritual blessing United San Antonio Pow Wow, Inc.
A Pow Wow-style drum circle kicks off the day, with United San Antonio Pow Wow, Inc. and Enemy Horse Drumming demonstrating and explaining common pow wow dance styles. Another Pow Wow-style drum circle features the Great Promise Dancers in the afternoon, also demonstrating and explaining common pow wow dance styles.
Live music by Native American artists including flute player Tim Blueflint Ramel. An enrolled member of the Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa, a federally recognized American Indian Tribe, Blueflint has opened for and shared the stage with Grammy Award Winner Mary Youngblood and a wide variety of artists.
Stories from Amy Bluemel, a Chickasaw storyteller and the great-granddaughter of Eastman Kaney, an original Dawes Commission enrollee. Bluemel shares Chickasaw customs, and those of other southeastern tribes, through elaborate storytelling.
Ledger art with artist George Curtis Levi, showcasing how ledger art captures a moment in time. A type of art that originated amongst the Cheyenne in the late 1840s, ledger art utilized pages of repurposed record books to depict everyday life. A member of the Southern Cheyenne tribe in Oklahoma, Levi also has ties to the Arapaho and Oglala Lakota communities.
Pottery making with artist Jereldine Redcorn showcasing Caddo pottery, an art form she single-handedly revived. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Redcorn’s father was Caddo and her mother was Potawatomi. In 2009, First Lady Michelle Obama selected one of her pieces to decorate the Oval Office.
Kachina carving with Kevin Horace Quannie, a Hopi/Navajo contemporary artist. Living on the Hopi reservation, Quannie specializes in carving contemporary kachina dolls using cottonwood roots.
Crafts and demonstrations include making your own drum, creating a community weaving basket, paper bead necklaces, pottery making, loom weaving, wood carving and leather stamping.
Festival visitors also enjoy free admission to the Briscoe, including exhibitions highlighting the stories of the American Indian, cowboys, pioneering women and others that define the West. The museum’s fall exhibition highlights the wildlife and landscape of the West, featuring 40 of the renowned nature photographer Thomas D. Mangelsen’s most resonant photographs. Thomas D. Mangelsen – A Life In The Wild takes viewers on a journey across the West and around the globe. One of the most prolific nature photographers of our time, Mangelsen is an award-winning photographer whose images have been exhibited internationally and published in iconic mediums such as “National Geographic,” “Good Morning America,” and “60 Minutes.” The exhibition is open to the public through January 29, 2023.

This heartwarming tale fosters understanding of dyslexia challenges through theater’s meaningful messaging program. Photo: Magik Theatre, used with permission.
A boy, a girl…and a gecko? No, it is not a fairytale. It is the story of Eddie & Vinnie, a heartwarming tale of a young boy who desperately wants to raise his grades to avoid attending summer school. The problem is that unless Eddie, who struggles with dyslexia, gets his grades up, his dreams of fun in the sun may be heading for a wipeout. (Magik Theatre, 2022)
Commissioned by Celebrate Dyslexia Founder and Executive Director Jasmin Dean and written by playwright Jenny Millinger, Associate Artistic Director at Childsplay Arizona, this first-of-its-kind show makes its world premiere at the Magik Theatrefrom October 15-28 during National Dyslexia Awareness Month. Opening night will be a fun-filled celebration filled with crafts, interactive experiences and a VIP reception to delight both the young and the young at heart. Special touring shows will take place from November 1-18, and March 27-May 21, 2023, taking Eddie & Vinnie’s message to the masses as far as they are summoned. Educators can enjoy a unique Dyslexia 101 Workshop with Jasmin Dean on October 22 to help understand the challenges dyslexic students face and empower themselves with tools to support those student’s unique learning needs.
Part of what makes this production so special is that it appeals to a wide age range, providing a unique glimpse into the dyslexic brain to lessen the stigma and foster awareness, understanding, and acceptance for not only the children diagnosed with this neurobiological difference, but their families, teachers, coaches, and the community at large as well. It is part of Magik’s new “Meaningful Messaging” programming that is designed to shine a light on the social issues children and their families face today.
With up to 20% of the population experiencing dyslexia, it is surprising that so many misconceptions continue to exist. Dyslexia is not an intellectual deficit. In fact, some of the world’s most innovative, creative and brilliant minds are dyslexic. Early identification and intervention are paramount to leveling the playing field for dyslexic learners so they can stay on track to read at grade level. Raising awareness within the community through creative, engaging performances such as Eddie and Vinnie is just the type of initiative to facilitate conversation in the family and enact change within the community. It is an undertaking that has caught the attention of many notable champions.
Eddie & Vinnie is made possible through the support of grants from Texas Cultural Trust, Texas Commission on the Arts, the Betty Stieren Kelso Foundation, and is sponsored by the H-E-B Read 3 initiative. The production also marks the second time in its 27-year-history that Magik Theatre has received grant funding through the prestigious National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).
Magik Theatre is committed to educating through entertainment—and no child or family is ever left out. In keeping with that commitment, the 2022-23 season boasts some upgrades to include the following special performances below.
