This Sunday November 11, Krause’s Cafe and Biergarten will honor Ben H. Dorcy III and local veterans by hosting ‘Benefit for the Brave.’ The evening will be filled with live musical performances, including Cody Canada, Kevin Galloway and more and will run from 5p.m. to 9p.m. Family and friends can enjoy a Sunday evening filled with German food, music and family fun. Tickets start at $25 and are available online. All proceeds will benefit the New Braunfels Area Community Fund and Canada/Kelly Veteran’s Fund which supports and aids Comal County veterans and their family members in need. During the event, active military and vets with ID can take advantage of $15 tickets at the door and half off food.

Krause’s Café is a New Braunfels historic restaurant that opened in 1938 and ran successfully until 1995. Recently it reopened and while keeping true to the original traditions it now has a ‘biergarten,’ live music and more. The menu reflects its German heritage and South Texas flavors while offering over 70 beers that include local, regional and international options as well as cocktails and wines on tap.

James Beard Foundation Celebrity Chef Tour Dinner at Hotel Emma

The James Beard Foundation Celebrity Chef Tour dinner will be held at Hotel Emma this Sunday October 28.

On Sunday October 28, the James Beard Foundation’s Celebrity Chef Tour Series is headed to Hotel Emma at the historic Pearl to serve up a night of fine dining. Eight renowned chefs from around the country will showcase their culinary talents at the event, each featuring a signature dish. The evening will consist of dinner and dessert followed by a Q & A with the event’s chefs. Tickets are on sale online and are $175 for James Beard Foundation members and the general public. The night will begin at 6:30p.m. with a cocktail reception hosted by Hotel Emma’s Chef John Brand followed by a multi-course dinner with wine pairings and ending with a decadent dessert course, all benefitting the James Beard Foundation. The dinner will feature dishes from special guests including Charleen Badman from FnB in Scottsdale, Arizona; Rick Lopez from La Condensa in Austin, Texas; Steven Redzikowski from Oak in Boulder, Colorado and Acorn in Denver; Daven Wardynski from Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort in Amelia Island, Florida and hometown chefs Tim McDiarmid from Tim The Girl and Steve McHugh from Cured.

The James Beard Foundation’s Celebrity Chef Tour showcases tastes from the country’s top chefs in cities across the nation for an interactive culinary experience to remember. The event is sponsored by Tito’s Handmade Vodka, US Bank, Whispering Angel Rosé and popular San Antonio bakery-café La Panaderia as the local sponsor. Brothers David and José Cáceres will provide loaves of their freshly baked kamut , birote and telera rolls for the dinner and will be in attendance to support their local chefs.

September is Hunger Action Month, a campaign designed to get the public mobilized to combat hunger. The month is dedicated to spreading the word and working together to find solutions. Chef John Brand of Hotel Emma is teaming up with No Kid Hungry from Tuesday September 25 through Thursday September 27 for Charlottesville’s Chefs Cycle. This event is an endurance fundraiser featuring award-winning chefs and members of the culinary community fighting hunger outside the kitchen. They will be completing a three-day, 300-mile ride while raising funds and awareness in support of No Kid Hungry. Chef Brand is seeking to raise $7,500 by the end of the event, which would help donate 75,000 meals for children in need. (Hotel Emma, 2018)

To help support the cause, last week Supper donated $10 from various lunch specials to Chefs Cycle. The public can make donations online to support Chef Brand’s goals

Chefs Cycle is a fundraising endurance event featuring award-winning chefs and members of the culinary community fighting hunger outside the kitchen. For the past three years, Chefs Cycle has engaged culinary talents who want to push their limits by completing a three-day, 300-mile ride while raising funds and awareness in support of No Kid Hungry. The spring 2018 ride took place in Santa Rosa, California with a goal of 275 chefs riding to help raise $2.4M, which translates into 24 million meals for kids facing hunger. The fall 2018 ride will take place in Charlottesville, Virginia in September.

Go Orange to Fight Hunger with San Antonio Food Bank and Whataburger

The ninth annual “Go Orange to Fight Hunger” campaign kicks off with San Antonio Food Bank and Whataburger joining forces in the fight against hunger. (San Antonio Food Bank, 2018)

This year, Whataburger’s commitment includes a customer fundraising event from now until September 30. Customers who visit any San Antonio or New Braunfels Whataburger restaurant and donate at least $1 will receive a thank you coupon for a free Whataburger with a purchase of medium fry and 32 oz. drink. Whataburger will also be donating $1 for every t-shirt sale from the hunger collection in the Whatastore. In 2017, Whataburger’s efforts helped the Food Bank provide more than 420,000 meals to area children, seniors, individuals and families in need.

The Food Bank’s “Go Orange for Hunger” campaign offers companies and individuals opportunities to make a difference by raising funds and awareness for hunger relief. Local buildings, including the Tower of the Americas, will turn orange for the month of September. The Food Bank has a “30 Ways for 30 Days” calendar to encourage community participation. On social media, the public can show their support by turning their Facebook or Twitter pages Orange and by showing how they go orange and tagging their photos with #HungerActionMonth.

The Granary ‘Cue & Brew is getting into the Fiesta season with Cask & Canine this Thursday April 19 from 4:30p.m. to 10p.m. In partnership with Saint Arnold Brewing Co., they are hosting a pet adoption event with local animal rescue, San Antonio Humane Society. During this Fiesta Kick-Off event, guests can stop by the Granary to find a fur-ever friend or to enjoy a beer. The Granary will be tapping a special cask of Saint Arnold’s “Ale Wagger” and donating a portion from each cask sold to the San Antonio Humane Society. As passionate animal lovers, Saint Arnold’s “Ale Wagger” will also donate a portion to support local rescue organizations in the Houston area. “Ale Wagger” is a full malty body brown ale with hints of chocolate. This event is free and open to the public with beer and food available for purchase. The San Antonio Humane Society will have dogs for adoption on site from 4:30p.m. t o 6:30p.m. and the event will run until 10p.m. The Granary and Saint Arnold will be handing out free Fiesta medals.

Destination Cocktails at La Cantera Resort & Spa

La Cantera Resort & Spa, in partnership with the San Antonio Cocktail Conference, is hosting Destination Cocktails. Set for Friday October 20 through Sunday October 22, this event will benefit children’s charities through Houston Street Charities. It will explore the creation and execution of handcrafted cocktails through tastings, seminars and paired dinners. Guest mixologists scheduled to appear are: John Garrett, Victory Wine Groups, Jason Kosmas, The 86 Company and Elyse Blechman. Ticket prices range from $40 to $150 and are available online. They can be purchased alone for any event or as a package to include a one night or two-night stay at La Cantera Resort & Spa. The resort stay includes two seminars per adult, admission to Texas Tasting Suite and daily breakfasts. Paired dinners are not included and must be purchased separately. September is Hunger Action Month, a campaign designed to get the public mobilized to combat hunger. The month is dedicated to spreading the word and working together to find solutions. Whataburger has partnered with the San Antonio Food Bank for the eight annual SA Goes Orange campaign to encourage the San Antonio community to get involved. This year the San Antonio Food Bank has expanded their services to support Hurricane Harvey victims in the surrounding area. During these difficult times, food banks are on the front line providing relief to families in need by making sure that monetary donations, food and supplies are distributed to those in need. As a sponsor, Whataburger contributed a $25,000 cash donation and is hosting a customer fundraising event. From now until Tuesday September 26, customers who visit any Bexar County Whataburger and donate at least $1 will receive a thank you coupon for a free Whataburger with the purchase of a medium fry and 32-ounce drink on their next visit Throughout the month, 100 Whataburger employees will sort and pack donations at the Food Bank for families and disaster relief efforts. During the first Volunteer Day on September 16 they packed a total of 36,000 pounds of food and 1,200 boxes for seniors. The next one is set for Saturday September 23. Whataburger customers can help by purchasing a Texas t-shirt since the company is donating 100% of the net proceeds from these sales to support the Houston Food Bank and the Coastal Bend Food Bank’s recovery efforts. He wanted customers to take one bite and say, “What a burger” so he named his stand on Ayers St “Whataburger.” Since then Whataburger now has over 700 locations across the country and continues to deliver fresh, made to order meals everyday with superior customer service. Community support includes charitable giving and volunteerism to nonprofit organizations that focus on children’s charities, cancer research, hunger assistance, disaster relief and military support.

Whataburger periodically hosts events to help the community and its various schools. These events have ranged from “Oh Whata Nights” to jalapeño eating contests, drawings and raffles. Coming up this week Whataburger is having two “Oh Whata Night” fundraisers in San Antonio. The first is on Wednesday May 17 5p.m. to 8p.m. to benefit Fearless Fastpitch Girls Softball and the other is on Thursday May 18 from 5p.m. to 8p.m. to benefit Mays Family at Potranco. The public is invited to come and show their support by enjoying their favorite menu items and Whataburger will donate 20 percent of the sales during the posted hours to the organization. The first 100 customers will also receive a free Whataburger gift. Wednesday’s event will include the popular Whataburger for a Year drawing where one customer’s name will be drawn to win the ultimate prize-a free Whataburger every week for a year. On Thursday’s event, there will be a photo booth and a special appearance by Whataguy, the Whataburger mascot.

Consejo Shooting Stars Poker Tournament at Paramour

This year for Fiesta, Paramour and Martin Phipps will be hosting the Consejo Shooting Stars Poker Tournament, an official Rey Feo event. This event will benefit the Rey Feo Consejo Educational Foundation, a non-profit organization that raises funds for the League of United Latin American Citizens and the Rey Feo Scholarship Foundation. Rey Feo 69, Fred Reyes will be onsite. It is set for Saturday April 8 from 11a.m. to 6p.m. with check at 11a.m. and cards up at 12p.m. The cost for participants will be $200 if purchased in advance and $250 if purchased at the door on the day of the event. Anyone interested in participating may register online. All donations will include lunch, select cocktails, non-alcoholic drinks and 10,000 playing chips. Participants may purchase an additional 10,000 playing chips for $100. Table sponsorships are also available. Growls & Growlers at Southerleigh

Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery is celebrating its 2nd anniversary and is partnering with Talk About It! SA, the Animal No-Kill program of the San Antonio Area Foundation to host the first annual ‘Growls and Growlers’ event on Saturday April 1 from 9a.m. to 1p.m. This pet adoption event will feature local animal rescue and pet resource organizations that will have about 50 dogs available for adoption and informational pet care advice. This event is free and open to the public and all organization’s adoption regulations and fees will apply. (Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery, 2017)

Participating local organizations will include San Antonio Pets Alive!, San Antonio Humane Society, Alamo City Pit Bull Rescue and Rehabilitation, Animal Defense League, Missy’s Haven, Kriser’s Natural Pet, Pawderosa Ranch and SpaySA. Pawderosa Ranch will be providing complimentary gift cards to anyone who adopts during this event. To celebrate its anniversary Southerleigh will be offering beer specials all day, including pints for $5, 32oz beer growlers for $8 and 64oz beer growlers for $14 with 20% of proceeds going to all participating nonprofit pet organizations.
