Unlocking Potential: Advocating for Music and Arts in Education

Wolfpen Branch Donation. Photo: Can’d Aid, used with permission.

Music and the arts are an important part of a well-rounded education, fostering creativity, expression, and critical thinking. In schools, they provide avenues for students to explore their emotions, develop empathy, and cultivate cultural understanding. They offer students alternative means of communication and self-expression, especially for those who may struggle in traditional academic subjects. By integrating music and the arts into education, schools nurture holistic development, preparing students for success in both their personal and professional lives while enriching communities with diverse perspectives and creativity. Now more than ever, it is essential that these programs continue to be a part of students’ curriculum.

In honor of World Music Day this June 21, I’d like to share the excellent work that Can’d Aid is doing to ensure that students have access to musical instruments and music education.

Can’d Aid has donated thousands of brand new instruments to underserved school systems, inspiring the next generation of musicians. Since its inception in 2013, Can’d Aid has donated nearly 3,700 instruments and hosted more than 160 educational music workshops across the country. (Turn It Up, 2024)

Through its Music + Arts program, Can’d Aid partners with nationally touring artists who donate their time, energy and passion while they’re on the road touring to facilitate instrument donations to classrooms across the country as TUNES Ambassadors. Longtime TUNES Ambassadors include Tyler Childers and the Food Stamps, Woody Platt and Charles Humphrey III of Steep Canyon Rangers, The Infamous Stringdusters, and many more. Can’d Aid TUNES Ambassadors host live-music concerts for classes in underserved school districts, introducing kids to the joys of music.

Ambassadors tell their stories and teach hands-on, educational sessions, with the goal of getting kids excited about learning to play an instrument. Creative outlets are essential to fostering good mental health in children, yet arts programs in public schools are typically the first to be defunded, as they’re expensive to run and not considered “core curriculum” or necessary for graduation. The TUNES program is a way for Can’d Aid to offset the decline in arts program funding and keep music in schools.

Can’d Aid is a nationally recognized nonprofit that rallies volunteers from all walks of life to build thriving communities. Through their unique integrated approach, they increase access and opportunities for underserved youth to experience music, arts and the outdoors; and protect and restore the environment. Since its inception in 2013, more than 19,500 skateboards and bikes have been built for underprivileged youth, more than 3,700 instruments have been donated and nearly 2,000 tons of trash have been diverted from landfills. To donate, volunteer or learn more, please visit Can’d Aid online.

New children’s book release: ‘Tikito el Tlacuachito del Barrio’ by Lucille Newton Cascos

Children’s books are magical portals to worlds where imagination knows no bounds. From the whimsical tales of talking animals to fantastical adventures in far-off lands, these books ignite curiosity and foster creativity. Vibrant illustrations breathe life into characters, captivating young minds and sparking endless wonder. Through stories of friendship, bravery, and discovery, children learn valuable lessons about empathy, resilience, and the power of imagination. Whether it’s the comforting familiarity of bedtime stories or the thrill of exploring new realms, children’s books serve as timeless companions on the journey of growing up, leaving an indelible mark on both hearts and minds.

Brownsville native Lucille Newton Cascos has a new children’s book that centers around a young opossum named Tikito titled “Tikito el Tlacuachito del Barrio: Father and Son’s Life Lessons of a Brownsville Native Opossum Who Dared to Dream.” I attended a book signing she had on Friday at Surge Mobile Physical Therapy in Olmito. Lucille took the time to sign copies of the book and take pictures with guests and children. There was a costumed opossum greeting visitors and entertaining the children and guests were treated to fruit, cheese, and other snacks. The atmosphere was celebratory and cheerful as those in attendance were excited to have a book all about a common sight in the valley, an opossum. The author is looking forward to more book signings in area schools and libraries and confirmed that there could be more books in the future as a series.

The book is recommended for older children and is both entertaining and educational. It has colorful illustrations and plenty of reading comprehension words to help young readers improve their language skills. The glossary of vocabulary terms in the back comes in handy in case there’s a word or two they need to look up. The story is poignant and inspiring and explores the themes of family, culture, and the importance of being true to yourself. Thank you, Lucille, for shining a light on this often misunderstood marsupial. Congratulations – it was a pleasure meeting you.

“Tikito el Tlacuachito del Barrio” aims to make learning fun and engaging for children around the world, introducing them to animals, cultures, and the Spanish language. By combining these elements, Lucille hopes to inspire a sense of discovery and foster curiosity and a love for learning in young readers.

Tiko and his rascally son, Tikito, live in the alleyways of Brownsville, Texas, where they escape the assault and dangers of the outside world. Having lived among humans, Tiko tries to shield his young son against the treachery around them, ultimately sharing the life lessons Tikito will need to survive. (Amazon, 2024)

For Kids Ages 7-9, 10-12. Grades 2-8
Educational, 70+ Target Reading Comprehension Words

“As the seasons changed, Tikito always remembered one thing that stuck in his head from all of his father’s wisdom: even within a short time, everyone can leave a lasting impact and create a legacy worth remembering.”

Children’s books are windows to the imagination and portals to whimsical worlds where adventures unfold and lessons are learned. They spark curiosity and foster creativity in young minds, while the vibrant illustrations captivate young readers and ignite their love for storytelling. Whether it’s tales of friendship, bravery, or the magic of everyday life, children’s books hold the power to inspire, educate, and entertain. Some of the best books around encourage children to explore, dream, and embark on unforgettable journeys, and maybe even learn an important science lesson or two. One such book is Namita Gandhi’s “Immune Heroes,” where through engaging storytelling and colorful characters, children meet brave white blood cells, outsmart villainous bacteria, and learn how their bodies fight back.

Namita Gandhi is a seasoned immunologist with a Ph.D. who has dedicated over two decades to unraveling the complexities of diseases in her biotech career. Inspired by bedtime stories with her nieces and nephew, Namita crafts whimsical picture books that demystify the wonders of immunology and science for children. Her new book “Immune Heroes: A science adventure with a twist! Celebrate the immune system and its power within your own body” is an illustrated book that captures children’s imagination and provides an entertaining education. It is an excellent way for children to explore STEM, work on their reading, and understand why it’s so important to wash our hands. (Nimitry Books PR, 2024)

“Immune Heroes” – imagine if your children could embark on an incredible journey, diving deep into the fascinating world of the human body. Crafted by a scientist, this book simplifies complex concepts, sparking curiosity and reducing screen time. It is perfect for inquisitive kids who ask “why?” or kids interested in careers in STEM, and especially useful for early elementary teachers looking to introduce the wonders of the human body to young minds. Through this beautifully illustrated children’s book that combines education and fun, kids can explore the worders of the immune system.

Coming up at the Magik Theatre, hop on an unforgettable ride in ‘Don’t Let The Pigeon Drive the Bus! The Musical!,’ a hilarious play based on the beloved book by Mo Willems. When the Bus Driver has a crisis that threatens to make her passengers late, a determined Pigeon sees his chance to take the wheel. It’s up to the audience to convince him that even though it’s not the best idea, there is something he can do. With catchy songs, colorful characters, and a heartwarming message about responsibility, this production promises to be a joyous experience for young audiences and adults alike. Even VIA, San Antonio’s transit authority, is joining in the fun with a bus-themed opening night party at Hemisfair Park to get the show rolling. (Magik Theatre, 2024)

Featuring a hilarious script co-written by Willems and Tom Warburton, catchy songs by Deborah Wicks La Puma, and an innovative mix of actors and puppets, ‘Don’t Let The Pigeon Drive the Bus! The Musical!’ plays off Willems’ madcap rhythm and playful vibe.

“In order to give the musical a dramatic arc, Willems has explored WHY the Pigeon cannot drive the bus. He also creates conflict around the Pigeon finding his ‘thing.’ Everyone seems to have one except for the Pigeon. Can the bus driver help the Pigeon figure it out?” – Anthony Runfola, Magik Theatre Artistic Director

Local musical theatre veteran Heather Hooten and Charlie Smith play the wily Pigeon and put-upon Bus Driver, respectively. Costume designer Marshall Chase and accomplished set and lighting designer Katherine Stepanek recreate Willems’ signature visual style for the stage. The result is a gleeful, engaging performance sure to delight fans of musical theater and Mo Willems alike. As always, local students are well taken care of, with matinee performances and a digital resource guide customized for educators. Suitable for children ages 4 and up, ‘Don’t Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus! The Musical!’ is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI), who also supplies all authorized performance materials.

San Antonio Charter Moms hosts School Discovery Day

Families enjoy a FREE day at the DoSeum during SACM’s School Discovery Day to kick off National School Choice Week. Photo: SACM, used with permission.

To kick off National School Choice Week, San Antonio Charter Moms (SACM) will be hosting its most popular event of the School Discovery Day series at the DoSeum on Saturday, January 20, from 11a.m. – 2p.m. The first 1,000 guests who register online for this free event will have the chance to meet with representatives from 37 of San Antonio’s top schools while also gaining complimentary access to The DoSeum’s 68,000 square feet of galleries. SACM representatives will provide hands-on guidance in navigating the nonprofit’s online school search tools, application materials and extensive, unbiased education resources while team members from MindshiftED provide additional guidance and interpretation for Spanish speakers. The event is free and open to the public. (San Antonio Charter Moms, 2024)

SACM’s School Discovery Day Series is the largest school fair series of its kind and is held annually during the height of San Antonio’s enrollment season for charter and choice schools, currently underway for the 2024-2025 academic year. National School Choice Week, January 21–27, 2024, is a national celebration of opportunities for all families to choose the K–12 educational options that best fit their children.

With more than 175 schools of choice, a booming population of new families, and a major “rightsizing” plan slated to close 15 schools in San Antonio ISD next year, San Antonio’s educational offerings have never been more diverse or important. Time is of the essence for families looking to explore their options. To prepare, SACM’s family-friendly School Discovery Days are an excellent place for families to make the most of their search window. San Antonio Charter Moms is designed to make the often overwhelming process of finding the right school less complicated for families. These events offer the perfect opportunity for parents and caregivers to ask questions, fill out applications, and learn about the enrollment process while enjoying some quality family time in the process.

“School Discovery Days are very valuable because you get to talk with school representatives in a relaxed environment and get a feel for their education philosophy and school community. Instead of just reading about a school or doing a quick tour, you have more time to get to know school staff and parents to further evaluate whether it would be a good fit for your child. For example, when you talk to a school leader, you can hear their passion or lack thereof. You can see if their philosophy is more traditional and formal or modern and relaxed. It’s all about gathering as much information as possible and trying to determine what it would be like to interact with the school’s administration and community on a frequent basis.” – Kat Gomez, local charter school parent and frequent contributor within SACM’s Facebook Discussion Group.
