Coming up in April at Jazz, TX is the musical revue ‘The Real Life La La Land’ from Wednesday April 5 through Friday April 7, 2017. It mirrors the inspiration of the critically acclaimed musical movie La La Land and it is told from the perspective of former jazz club bartender and singing waiter Dave Damiani. Dave Damiani and Graham Fenton met over 10 years ago at Miceli’s Restaurant in Hollywood where they were working as singing waiters. Their ultimate dream is to bring back the class, style and swagger of places like the 500 Club and The Copacabana. Straight from Las Vegas it will feature Jazz, TX club owner Doc Watkins and special guests Graham Fenton, star of Las Vegas’ Jersey Boys, Dave Damiani, from Sinatra 100, CBS Vegas, Bijon Watson, trumpet player featured in La La Land and Watkin’s orchestra. They will be performing songs from famed jazz artists like Frank Sinatra, Frankie Valli, Dean Martin and Nat “King” Cole as well as melodies from the movie. There will be two sets each night, one at 7p.m. and the other at 9:30p.m. Tickets are $25 each and are available online. (Jazz, TX, 2016)

Radney Foster part of unity rally in Del Rio, TX

Radney Foster is a country music singer, songwriter and musician and a fourth generation Texan whose family grew up along the border. On Saturday March 25 he will return to his hometown for a unity rally scheduled to take place in Del Rio, TX. Residents of Del Rio, TX and Ciudad Acuña, Mexico will participate in a unity rally by joining hands across the border on the International Bridge. Del Rio mayor Robert Garza and Ciudad Acuña mayor Hector Arocha will form the first link in a hand to hand chain stretching into both cities. The event will begin at 3p.m. and will feature addresses by both mayors and other dignitaries and a performance by Radney Foster, followed by receptions in each city.  This event is sponsored by the We Are One Foundation and is one of several rallies being held in other border cities including Laredo and San Diego. Jazz, TX, the Pearl’s upscale jazz venue, is hosting its first Mardi Gras celebration on Fat Tuesday, February 28, 2017. There will be a special menu created by locally renowned guest chef John Russ previously from Luke and a special performance by Kyle Keener, Curtis Calderon and friends during happy hour from 5:30p.m. with no cover charge and Doc Watkins and friends from 8:30p.m. to 11:30p.m. with a $20 cover charge per guest. The 20th Anniversary Tour of ‘Rent’ is coming to the Majestic Theatre from March 3 through March 5 and to get things rolling The St Anthony Hotel is teaming up with the Majestic Theatre to bring the Broadway stage to Peacock Alley for one night. On Wednesday March 1 there will be a karaoke competition in the hotel’s famed Peacock Alley from 5.m. to 7p.m. The public is invited to enter for a chance to win two tickets to ‘Rent’ on Friday March 3 at 8p.m. Two winners will be chosen by crowd applause and judges from The St Anthony Hotel and the Majestic Theatre. Dance lessons and drinks specials at Jazz, TX

Jazz, TX announces a partnership with Semeneya, San Antonio’s number one studio for Latin and Salsa dancing, to host salsa lessons and provide guests a special drink menu for them to enjoy after the lessons. These lessons are every Saturday from 1p.m. to 4p.m. and will feature a different style of salsa dancing taught by Semeneya. Following the lessons there will be a social free-style salsa dance with live music on the dance floor. Jazz, TX will have drinks specials including a Jazz, TX infused Bloody Mary, a Jazz, TX style Michelada, Fresh Fruit Mimosa, The Cha Cha made with blanco tequila, fresh lime, Mexican cola and crushed ice, an Aperol Refresher and La Isla Hernandez made with black strap rum, blanco rum, gin, Cointreau, fresh lemon, simple syrup and Mexican cola. Each session is $12 and drink specials are available for $8 to $12. Students of all levels are welcome to join the fun and learn new dancing skills. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Patrons who have enjoyed Jazz, TX will be pleased to know that the venue has announced a new radio show series with San Antonio’s NPR affiliate, Texas Public Radio (TPR). Titled Live from Jazz, TX, the show will tape five shows onsite beginning on Wednesday February 22. It will feature owner Doc Watkins along with special guests with an interview segment, audience Q&A and an abundance of music. The first five tapings will focus on San Antonio’s live music scene and will feature local favorites like Doc Watkins, Pierre, Poree, Jim Cullum and Robert V. Tapings will be on Wednesdays through March 22 at 8:30p.m. Cover is $20 per person and audience participation will be encouraged by way of Q&A and other activities. Live from Jazz, TX will air on TPR’s 89.1 FM in San Antonio every Saturday in April from 7p.m. to 8p.m. (Jazz, TX, 2017)

Marcia Ball is a Texas-born, Louisiana raised pianist, vocalist and songwriter and is now touring in support of her sixth Alligator Records CD ‘The Tattooed Lady and the Alligator Man.’ On Wednesday February 1 she is bringing her tour to Jazz, TX, the Pearl’s newest upscale jazz venue. Her musical style is described as groove-laden New Orleans R&B heart-wrenching ballads and driving Gulf Coast blues. She has five Grammy Award nominations and received the 2014 Blues Music Award (BMA) for the Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the Year. In 2010 she was inducted into the Gulf Coast Hall of Fame and into the Louisiana Music Hall of fame in 2012. Show time is from 8:30p.m to 11:30p.m. and tickets are $35 and available online.
