Upcoming new album release: At Least I Tried – Sun Room

Cut My Hair is the second single from Sun Room’s upcoming new EP At Least I Tried. Photo: Sun Room, used with permission.

Sun Room has stepped out as Southern California’s foremost surf-rock band without ever trying to do anything other than have a good time. Luke Asgian (lead vocals & guitar), Ashton Minnich (guitar), and Max Pinamonti (bass) first came together by playing local house shows amongst the young surf community in SoCal, but after a series of viral moments, two of their singles Crashed My Bike and Something That You’re Missing were included on the Netflix series Outer Banks. Within just six months of the band forming, Sun Room scored a spot at Austin City Limits, sold out a run of headline shows across the US, supported Louis Tomlinson’s North and South American tours, and joined Inhaler for another tour in Europe. (Big Hassle, 2023)

The band recently released Cut My Hair, the second single from their upcoming EP. Quickly waltzing into overdrive, the band’s latest offering is a rebellious, modern spin on the endless summer vibes of the 50s, all while knowing all good things come to an end. Upbeat while overwhelmingly aloof, the band can not be phased when they are taking things day by day.

They also announced that their At Least I Tried EP will arrive in full form on November 30. The single Cut My Hair, along with most of the EP, were produced by one of the band’s biggest idols and influences from growing up in California, Zac Carper of FIDLAR – fans can pre-save At Least I Tried.

Last month, Sun Room released the title track of their upcoming EP At Least I Tried, along with an official video. In the Jack Revell directed cut, the band is seen trying their best to make it through a whirlwind week, featuring footage from a house show they played in San Diego for the 4th of July. Paste Magazine premiered the single and said, “It’s vibrant, rowdy and a hell lot of fun.” On November 30, Sun Room will release their At Least I Tried EP in its entirety, with an official video for Cut My Hair leading up.

Kicking back up for its second leg, Sun Room is out on a headline tour through the end of the month. The remaining dates will see the band joined by Sarah & the Sundays and Surf Trash. Leaving a trail of chaos as they move coast to coast, Sun Room’s tour will end in their home state of California, for a series of shows that are sure to be some of the rowdiest on the run. The band will ring in the new year with a series of Australian festival performances and their first ever headline tour of the country.

Upcoming new album release: Innocent Allies – Cary Morin

Cary Morin’s upcoming album Innocent Allies takes inspiration from famed western painter Charles M. Russell. It will be out January 26, 2024. Photo: Google

Internationally acclaimed as a mesmerizing live performer, Cary Morin’s soul-stirring voice and jaw-dropping fingerstyle guitar playing have captivated audiences for decades. Morin’s career catalog fuses the best of American roots music: blues, folk, soul, bluegrass, and the timeless and distinctive sounds of the rural countryside, from the Western Plains and Rocky Mountains to the rhythmic melting pot of the deep South. His music has reached millions through prestigious performances at venues like the Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center as well as national television and radio programs. He has shared stages with Taj Mahal, Los Lobos, and Bonnie Raitt, among countless others, while earning multiple awards including two Indigenous Music Awards for Best Blues CD. When not performing across the US and Europe, Morin finds inspiration in Northern Colorado, which he proudly calls home. (IV-PR, 2023)

With Innocent Allies—due for release on January 26, 2024—Morin observes details in Charles M. Russell’s painting from his perspective as a Native Crow and sets them to song. “Situations depicted in his paintings that might not be obvious to some are subtle cultural or ritualistic details,” says Morin, pointing out Russell’s Indian Hunters Return, in which an elder is being served their meal first; a customary gesture in Crow culture. “As an Indigenous artist, I bring a perspective to this aspect of Charlie’s work by way of this body of songs.” Morin is also quick to note that Charles M. Russell was a friend to the Plains Tribes, concerned with the destruction of Native culture and portraying Native Americans in his paintings with a dignity that was largely absent from other artists’ portrayals of the time. “This record is a masterpiece worthy of its place among the great works of art it was created to honor,” says Trina Shoemaker, the Grammy-winning producer who mixed and mastered the album at her Alabama studio.

Morin shared the first single from Innocent Allies: the impetus for the album itself, “Big Sky Sun Goes Down.” Fans can watch the music video for “Big Sky Sun Goes Down”—produced by Randy Perkins & Film Locale—and stream or purchase the single.

New book release: ‘The Invisible Red String’ by Peter Berlin and Ann Zachariah

‘The Invisible Red String’ is a love story by Peter Berlin and Ann Zachariah. Courtesy photo, used with permission.

Topics like fate and predestination can be subjective, especially when love is concerned. Some believe that love knows no boundaries because it is written in the threads of destiny. According to an old Chinese proverb: “An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but it will never break,” some people are destined to meet and their destinies have been predetermined by ‘the gods.’ This belief is the subject of a new book by Peter Berlin and Ann Zachariah. “The Invisible Red String” is a spiritual love story that examines the complex concepts of abuse, trauma, and therapy, offering a glimpse into the power of human connection and the unbreakable threads of destiny that bind us all. It is available on Amazon

“The Invisible Red String” is a soulful odyssey where an invisible red thread of destiny weaves a tapestry of love, growth, and transformation across continents. Join four extraordinary souls as their lives intertwine in the most unexpected of ways, transcending the barriers of race and culture to create profound and meaningful connections.

John – an advertising executive, carries the scars of a turbulent past, a product of the foster care system, now striving to provide a loving home for his son, who has Down syndrome. When his supermodel wife abandons him, he finds himself at a crossroads, searching for healing and redemption.

Anna – hailing from a conservative background in Kerala, India, knows the pain of forced arranged marriages and the depths of physical abuse. As a divorcee, she is determined to break free from her past and discover her own path to happiness.

Jake – a successful cardiologist, appears superficial on the surface, but beneath his polished exterior lies a longing for something deeper. He embarks on a journey of self-discovery, encountering a love that transcends time and space.

Lilly – a young African woman who once endured the cruelty of corporal punishment, arrives in a foreign land to pursue her education, with no family to guide her. She finds unexpected solace in the warm embrace of a gay couple who become her chosen family.

As these four souls converge at Soul Haven, a place where personal stories are shared, and meaningful bonds are forged, they embark on a remarkable journey of growth and transformation. Through profound experiences, they confront their traumas, explore unconventional therapies like past life regression and shadow work, and break down the barriers of race and culture.

Anna and John’s love story emerges as a beacon of hope, proving that love can heal even the deepest wounds. Jake and Maya’s connection transcends the physical realm, leading Jake on a quest to understand the depths of his own soul.

‘The Condor’s Shadow’ is the newest novel by Jim Story. Photo: Amazon

Literary fiction is mostly character driven and provides deep insight into the world around us and the human condition. They tackle complex themes and are often considered excellent works of literature, such examples being “The Grapes of Wrath” and “The Great Gatsby.” This is my go to genre when I am in the mood for a novel that probes into a character’s life and chronicles his/her life experiences. Today’s new book release is “The Condor’s Shadow” by Jim Story and it examines the life of Clayton Poole throughout the years, all his struggles and lessons learned along the way. Ready to go on this journey? This contemporary literary fiction novel is available on Amazon.

Jim Story is a novelist, short-story writer, and poet. Born in Oklahoma and raised on a ranch in the San Joaquin Valley in California, Jim Story holds a PhD from Columbia University, a certificate from the Harriman Institute, and has taught at Whitman College, Long Island University, and Lehman College in New York. “The Condor’s Shadow” – Thirty-four year old Clayton Poole has wandered state-to-state, changing identities for nearly two decades. Finally about to start life anew as a small-town Montana journalist, he is suddenly confronted by his darkly checkered past: the love of his life he had felt forced to surrender, and the violent act that first expelled him onto the road and changed his life forever.

Set in California, Montana, and the Pacific Northwest, “The Condor’s Shadow” tells Clayton’s story in a layered fashion, moving fluidly back and forth through time from the early 1950s to the present, as he struggles to escape, rectify, and finally reconcile the forces that have shadowed his life.

Compelling, suspenseful, poignant, and romantic, it is already getting rave reviews:

Upcoming new album release: Bring The Kids – Hamell on Trial

Bring The Kids will be released November 27 and is the anti-folk satirist’s most accessible album ever. Courtesy photo, used with permission.

Hamell on Trial is the musical alias of folk punk hero Ed Hamell. A one-man explosion, he is loud-as-war one minute, stepping off the microphone to whisper to an enthralled audience the next. Hamell’s unique and dynamic performance style is informed by politics, passion, intelligence, and an irreverent sense of humor. Armed with a battered 1937 Gibson acoustic guitar that he amplifies mightily and strums like a machine gun, a politically astute mind that cannot stop moving, and a mouth that can be profane one minute and profound the next, Hamell sets his sights on the new America. He shoots straight with his audience, whether unraveling topical issues or sharing confessional tales from his own past. Hamell has shared countless stages with fellow anti-establishment icons such as Ani DiFranco, Kimya Dawson, Aesop Rock and The Pogues, as well as winning the coveted Herald Angel Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. (US/THEM Group, 2023)

Hamell’s 2023 full-length record, Bring The Kids, marks the seventeenth release in a discography overflowing with four star reviews and critical acclaim, ranging from major label releases (Mercury / Polygram) to top independents such as New West and Righteous Babe Records. Bring The Kids will mark Hamell’s third record on Texas indie Saustex Records, helmed by Hickoids’ lead singer Jeff Smith. Bring The Kids will be available on LP, CD and digital on November 27, 2023 via Saustex Records. Pre-orders are available HERE.

On the new record, Hamell teams up with NY-based producer Matt Labozza to meld his punk rock hooks into the most beat-driven and expansive production approach in the history of his catalogue. “This is definitely the most musically adventurous record so far,” Hamell explains. “I recorded my last two albums on my phone. I think some of my fans have been wondering what the songs would sound like if I were to open them up to every musical idea and tool that swirls around them in my brain. Here’s your answer.”

Hamell on Trial is the modern day voice of dissent and social commentary, fighting a one-man war armed with irrepressible energy and a seeker’s soul. His show is a 75-minute journey into true and authentic connection driven by the willingness to fight for the disenfranchised and celebrate the free thinkers of the world. Don’t we need that now more than ever?

New book release: ‘Hearts At War’ by Hélder Fanha Martins

Dive deep into the heart of the Qing dynasty, where the shadowed halls of the imperial palace brim with intrigue and the far reaches of Shangli village resonate with age-old martial arts secrets. Photo: Hélder Fanha Martins, used with permission.

In historical fiction, a fictional story takes place within real historical events. As a big history fan, this is one of my favorite genres, especially when it involves warriors and battles in a faraway land. For fans of the genre, here is a new book release to keep in mind: “Hearts At War” by Hélder Fanha Martins. Readers can journey through China’s captivating cultural fabric, where kung fu is not just a fight, but a philosophy, and where the heart’s silent battles are as fierce as the ones fought in broad daylight. In this vivid epic, ancient wisdom drawn from “The Art of War” fuels a village’s courageous stand against an impending invasion. Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? Find out more, pick up your copy today.

Hélder Fanha Martins stands as a distinguished author who merges the rigorous world of scientific academia with the craft of storytelling. Serving as a professor in Information and Communication Sciences at the Polytechnic University of Lisbon, Hélder’s academic contributions are evident in his notable scientific publications. Yet, his passion extends beyond academia and into the realm of fiction. His work, “Zechariah – Lost in Time, Found in Love,” is a thoughtful sci-fi narrative that delves into the complex relationship between love, destiny, and technology. By challenging the traditional concepts of time and legacy, the novel has garnered attention from readers in both Portuguese and English, urging them to reflect on the deeper implications of their actions through time and space. “Hearts At War,” his second fiction book, is a masterful ode to the indomitable human spirit, illustrating that true power arises not from force, but from the enduring heartbeats of a resilient people. It is available on Amazon in English and Portuguese editions. (Hélder Fanha Martins, 2023)

“Hearts at War” is an immersive fiction epic set in the Qing dynasty, during the reign of Emperor Guangxu and under the shadow of the influential Empress Dowager Cixi. The book is an intricate tapestry of intertwined lives that span from the halls of the imperial palace, a stage for intrigues and corruption, to a remote village called Shangli, where the inhabitants cultivate an almost mystical connection with the land and keep the traditions of Chinese martial arts alive.

The narrative follows Yan, a devoted father and martial arts master, his daughter Mei, a young woman drawn to a broader existence, and Jian, a wandering warrior with a complex past. The fate of the three becomes inexorably intertwined when the village discovers an enigmatic green-blue jade slab, making Shangli a target for a ruthless warlord. As the threat of invasion grows, the village mobilizes in desperate resistance, employing guerrilla tactics and drawing inspiration from concepts in the legendary book “The Art of War.”

The story navigates through the rich cultural tapestry of China, offering an introspective view into kung fu, philosophy, and the eternal struggle between pragmatism and the yearnings of the heart. “Hearts at War” is more than a tale of physical battles; it is a profound exploration of the resilience of the human spirit in the face of the greatest challenges. The book is a celebration of the beauty, culture, and tenacity of a people who find their true strength when confronting seemingly insurmountable adversities.
