Ella Enchanted at the Magik Theatre this holiday season

Magik Theatre will be turning the much-beloved story of Cinderella upside down when it presents ‘Ella Enchanted: The Musical’ from November 19 to December 24. This special two-act production, adapted by Karen Zacarías as a play from a children’s book by The New York Times bestselling author Gail Carson Levine, will feature music by Deborah Wicks La Puma. (Magik Theater, 2021)

In this fairytale, at birth, Ella of Frell is given the “gift” of obedience by her misguided fairy godmother. But as a teenager, strong-willed Ella chooses to reject her fate and embarks on a quest to break the curse forever. Through her adventures, Ella must outwit evil stepsisters, escape hungry ogres, and save the prince before she can claim her real voice. Ella Enchanted: The Musical emphasizes the importance of self-empowerment, perseverance in the face of insurmountable obstacles, and an eagerness to learn. In this heart-warming and powerful tale, children of all ages are encouraged to discover the power of words within their own voice.

Tickets are now on sale. Single tickets are on sale now for $25 per adult and children $20 ages 2 to 17, with discounts available for educators, military, students, and seniors. The production is recommended for ages 5 and over. Group rates are available to parties of eight or more people.

The special production, which is recommended for ages five (5) and above, runs approximately seventy-five (75) minutes including an intermission, with a five-minute question-and-answer session.

SPECIAL PERFORMANCES

Opening Day
The official opening day is on Sunday, November 20 at 6p.m.

Military and First Responder Appreciation
The production on Sunday, November 21 at 3p.m. will feature Military Appreciation Day, in which active or retired members of the military with an I.D. pay a discounted price of $11.50 per ticket for their entire party.

Pay What You Wish
On Saturday, November 27 at 6p.m., Magik Theatre will offer one of its Pay What You Wish performances, in which tickets are available only at the door on the day of the production.

American Sign Language Interpreted Performance (ASL)
At the performance on Saturday, December 11 at 2p.m., Robert Cardoza, the San Antonio theatre community’s primary sign-language interpreter, will be available for patrons who require American sign language as their primary form of communication.

Teatro Audaz’ production of Man of the Flesh opens Thursday

Teatro Audaz’ next performance opens this week at the Public Theater of San Antonio’s Cellar Theatre. Man of the Flesh, by Octavio Solis, is directed by Holly Nañes opens this Thursday, October 28, 2021. Tickets are available now available online and range from $20 for student/military/SATCO/senior/educator to $25 for general admission. (Teatro Audaz, 2021)

A modern comic adaptation of the first Don Juan Play, The Trickster of Seville, Juan is dispatched by this father who owns Pronto Lawn and Garden to work off his sins of the flesh. But at the Downey estate, on the eve of Day of the Dead, he meets the love of his life. But contrary to all the women before her, Anna Downey spurns him. He is determined to declare his love to her, even if he must seduce all the women of the house to get near her.

‘Pay What You Wish’ night at Magik Theatre for Snow White

Back by popular demand, Magik Theatre is thrilled to bring the not-your-usual “Once Upon a Time” classic tale of Snow White, written by Greg Banks, from October 16-October 30, as part of its fall season. This comedic mix of theatre and drama is back but with two new cast members — Elysa Aguilar and Devon Moreno of Maddi’s Fridge. (Magik Theatre, 2021)

Magik Theatre’s cast featuring Aguilar and Moreno will morph into a multitude of characters including a princess, her evil queen, a magical mirror, a huntsman, and the beloved seven dwarfs. Both lively and imaginative, this new adaptation of Snow White will leave you experiencing this classical story with an entirely fresh perspective while wondering: How did they do that? So expect the unexpected in this fabulous fairy tale with (spoiler alert) ‘you-will-not-see-it-coming’ hilarious hijinks and meaningful lessons.

Snow White opened October 16 and runs through October 30 at Magik Theatre, located at Hemisfair. It is recommended for ages 6 years old and up. 

PAY WHAT YOU WISH PERFORMANCE

WHEN: Saturday, October 23, 2021 at 2p.m.

The October 23 at 2p.m. “pay what you wish” performance is Magik’s way of granting an opportunity for families, who may never have been to a Magik performance or could not afford to do so due to financial hardships.

Tickets are normally $20- $25 each but with the “pay what you wish” performance families can donate any amount they would like at the door. Tickets are limited and can be purchased by visiting the Magik Theatre Box Office on site on the day of that performance on October 23. The Box Office will open at 12p.m. For questions, families can contact the Box Office for more information at (210) 227-2751.

Single performance tickets for ‘Hamilton’ on sale starting today

Producer Jeffrey Seller and North Park Lexus Broadway In San Antonio announced yesterday that single tickets for ‘Hamilton’ will go on sale to the public on Thursday, September 23rd at 10a.m. online through the Majestic Theatre, Broadway in San Antonio, or in person at the Majestic Theatre Box Office. Tickets will be available for performances January 5 – 16, 2022. The San Antonio engagement of ‘Hamilton’ is presented by arrangement with North Park Lexus Broadway in San Antonio and is a subscription offering of the 2021-2022 Series. (Majestic Theatre, 2021)

There is a maximum purchase limit of eight (8) tickets per account for the engagement. When tickets go on sale, prices will range from $49 to $179 with a select number of premium seats available from $249 for all performances. There will be a lottery for forty $10 seats for all performances. Details will be announced closer to the engagement. Jeffrey Seller notes, “It’s tempting to get tickets any way you can. There are many sites and people who are selling overpriced, and in some cases, fraudulent tickets. Opening next Friday September 10 at the Camille Playhouse is ‘The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.’ The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is a musical with a book by Texas author Larry L. King and Peter Masterson and music and lyrics by Carol Hall. It is based on a story by King that was inspired by the real-life Chicken Ranch in La Grange, Texas. It will run until Sunday September 19 with showtimes Friday and Saturday at 8p.m. and Sunday at 2p.m. Tickets are available online for $25. All seats are general admission. The performance will run approximately 90 minutes without intermission and no concessions will be sold. (Camille Playhouse, 2021)

‘Best Little Whorehouse in Texas’ – Based on a story by Texas local legend Larry L. King and inspired by the real-life Chicken Ranch in La Grange, Texas, this happy go lucky view of small town vice and statewide political side-stepping recounts the good times and the demise of one of the better pleasure palaces in all of Texas. Governors, senators, mayors, and even victorious college football teams frequent Miss Mona’s cozy bordello until that puritan nemesis Watchdog focuses his television cameras and his righteous indignation on the institution.

Rodgers + Hammerstein’s ‘Cinderella’ is the new Broadway adaptation of the classic musical. It opens today at the Woodlawn Theatre and will run until Sunday September 19, 2021. Performance times are Friday and Saturdays at 7:30p.m. and Sundays at 3p.m. Tickets range from $18 to $30 and are available online. Due to COVID seating restrictions, all tickets are general admission and must be purchased in advance, online only. Seating is on a first come, first served basis. Theater review: ‘The Panza Monologues’ at the Cellar Theatre

This weekend is your last chance to catch Teatro Audaz’ production of ‘The Panza Monologues.’ Upcoming showtimes are Friday and Saturday at 7:30p.m. and Sunday at 2p.m. at the Cellar Theatre and livestream online. Written by Virginia Grise and Irma Mayorga, ‘The Panza Monologues’ is based on women’s stories about their panzas—tú sabes—that roll of belly we all try to hide. ‘The Panza Monologues’ features the words of Chicanas speaking with humor and candor. Their stories boldly place the panza front and center as a symbol that reveals the lurking truths about women’s thoughts, lives, loves, abuses, and living conditions. Directed by Paula Rodriguez and featuring the ensemble cast of Brizzo Torres, Jojanie Moreno, Isabel DeLaCerda, and Laura T. Garza, it runs an hour and ten minutes with no intermission.

‘The Panza Monologues’ has played across the nation and now it has come home to where it all began. Right from the start, it gives off an unmistakable ‘San Anto’ vibe and is a bilingual narrative of everything having to do with curves. It begins with an introduction by the four ladies onstage stating that women have no problem talking about vaginas, and then give various synonyms for it, yet are hesitant, even shy, to talk about their ‘panzas.’ Their battle cry is “Panza Power!” The production includes the sections ‘Historia’ (an ode to shoes – ‘tacones’ and female empowerment), ‘Hunger for Justice,’ ‘Noticias’ (sobering facts about how people have gotten fatter and San Antonio is seen as one of the fattest cities), ‘Praying,’ ‘Panza Power,’ and ‘Political Panza.’ It ends with a party-like atmosphere and all four ladies return onstage to urge women to be proud of their curves, or ‘panza proud.’ As they proclaim: “When all else fails, power to the panza.”

Overall, ‘The Panza Monologues’ celebrates women and urges them to love their curves. One of the funniest and most relatable moments is when one of the ladies uses a pair of pliers to try to adjust her jeans – definite grade A performance. The show does an excellent job of balancing humor, history, and more serious topics such as ‘the diabetic mom’ – how she developed diabetes and how it affected the family. The real conversation starter must be the debate between Cubans and Mexicans where the question that hangs is “If obesity is synonymous with capitalism, then why is San Antonio one of the poorest and fattest cities around?” It also uses poetry to convey the frustrating and challenging ways that women feel about their bodies. While the main topic is how women should accept and love themselves, it also touches on obesity, diabetes, and income inequality and hopefully it will spark a conversation to bring about much needed changes in our society. There is moderate cursing, but it does not distract from the message. ‘The Panza Monologues’ is a must-see production filled with humor and relevant social issues with excellent performances by everyone involved.

Notes on the livestream: sometimes it is hard to hear the dialogue when there is music in the background.

Teatro Audaz is excited to announce their return to live theatre and the final show of their 2020/21 season with ‘The Panza Monologues’ directed by Paula Rodriguez. ‘The Panza Monologues’ returns home to where it all began. It opens Friday August 13 and will run until Sunday August 22, 2021, with performances on Friday and Saturday at 7:30p.m. and Sunday at 2p.m. at the Cellar Theatre. All performances will be live and streamed live online. Ticket prices range from $15 to $25 and will only be available online. San Antonio’s most eagerly awaited return will once again leap onto the Majestic Theatre stage Wednesday, October 20 for a limited engagement of three weeks through Sunday, November 7. The show’s four-week engagement in 2015 played a sold-out run at the Majestic Theatre. Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ will play Tuesdays through Thursdays at 7:30p.m., Fridays at 8p.m., Saturdays at 2p.m. and 8p.m. and Sundays at 1p.m. and 6:30p.m. (North Park Lexus Broadway in San Antonio, 2021)

Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ is a musical based on the 1994 Walt Disney Animation Studios’ animated feature film of the same name with music by Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice, and book by Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi, with additional music and lyrics by Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor, and Hans Zimmer. The musical features actors in animal costumes as well as giant, hollow puppets.
