Now playing at The Public Theater’s Cellar Theater is ‘Freud’s Last Session’ by Mark St. Germain as suggested by Dr. Armand M. Nicholi Jr. This thought-provoking play centers around Dr. Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis as they debate about God’s existence, life, love and other subjects. It plays until Sunday May 12, and after a highly successful run, the last four performances are already sold out. ‘Freud’s Last Session’ is set in Freud’s office on September 3, 1939 as war with Germany seems all but certain. Freud, (Wesley Deitrick) the 83-year-old Jewish refugee from Vienna, invites Lewis (John Stillwaggon), the 40-year-old World War I veteran visiting from Oxford, to his office. He wants to meet Lewis to find out why such an obviously smart man would embrace religion. Lewis is late because the trains are being commandeered to help evacuate London’s schools, hospital and jails in anticipation of bombing raids. During their visit, the air raid sirens go off, triggering one of Lewis’ PTSD episodes. They discuss God, humor, Jesus’ teachings, sex, monogamy, Hitler, homosexuality and music, among other ideas. They examine each of their childhoods and how it shaped the men they became. The controversial topic of suicide comes up because Freud has oral cancer and has considered it many times because he is in constant pain (he passes away weeks later from medically assisted suicide). Everything is going smoothly until after a heated discussion, Freud is undone by the immense pain from his sickness. The only other interruptions are the radio news bulletins from the BBC. It ends on an ironic note, as King George VI addresses the British people, telling them that “with God’s help” they would prevail over Germany.
Even though Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis probably never met in real life, St. Germain makes effective use of their writings and those of Dr. Armand M. Nicholi Jr.’s ‘The Question of God’ for this excellent meeting of the minds. It is not an attempt at conversion either way, just a civilized discussion of differing ideologies. Such discussions are often heated, but Freud and Lewis part as friends, not allowing their differences to go beyond points of view. Highlights include when Lewis tells Freud that history is filled with monsters, yet humanity survives and Freud counters by stating that humanity cannot survive without villains; and when Lewis gets defensive when Freud grills him about his book “The Pilgrim’s Regress” to which Freud responds “when you put your opinions to the public, expect the public to react.” Under the direction of David Rinear, it is relevant to today’s volatile society because it makes the point that it is possible to have differences of opinions without resorting to name calling and vicious vitriol. With strong performances by Deitrick and Stillwaggon, ‘Freud’s Last Session’ is recommended for audiences who appreciate smart debates and it is sure spark discussions about the topics mentioned. Definitely a must-see.
Krause’s Café & Biergarten is excited to announce the return of its official Masskrugstemmen competition, a Bavarian stein-holding competition and German sport. The first round of the competition is Saturday, May 4 at 8p.m. and competitions will continue Saturdays, May 18, June 1, June 15, July 6, July 13, July 20, July 27, August 3 and August 10, leading up to a finals competition on August 17. A Masskrugstemmen is a traditional beer stein-holding competition that has its roots in Germany. The competition is a Bavarian strongman and strongwoman test where participants hold a liter of German beer by the handle straight out in front of their bodies for as long as they can. The last person still holding his or her liter of beer correctly wins. (Krause’s Café, 2019)
Locals are encouraged to come test their strength while enjoying German steins of beer. Ladies and gentlemen are welcome as there will be rounds for both. Guests can enter the competition for an entry fee of just $20 to receive their choice of Hofbräu beer and astein to go with it. As the competition endures the last person remaining, correctly holding his or her liter of beer, wins. The winners, both male and female, will move on to the Krause’s Finals which will take place on August 17 for one final battle royale to compete for a chance to participate in the Masskrugstemmen at the Hofbrauhaus in New York City. The stein master named as national champion in New York will win a trip to Germany.

Opening this weekend at The Sheldon Vexler Theatre is ‘Cabaret. This dark musical about escaping the trials of life opens on Saturday May 4 and will run through Sunday June 2, 2019. Tickets are now available online and are $23 for general admission, $20 for seniors/military, $19 for JCC (Barshop Jewish Community Center) and $15 for students. Showtimes are 8p.m. Saturday, 2:30p.m. Sunday and 7:30p.m. Thursday.
‘Cabaret’ is based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. It is set in the infamous Kit Kat Klub where Emcee Sally Bowles and the rest of the ensemble take the stage nightly to tantalize the crowd and to leave their troubles outside. In a seedy Berlin nightclub, as the 1920s draw to a close, a garish Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience and assured them they will forget all their troubles at the Cabaret. With the Emcee’s bawdy songs as wry commentary, ‘Cabaret’ explores the dark, heady and tumultuous life of Berlin’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. Memorable songs include “Cabaret,” “Willkommen” and “Maybe This Time.”

First Thursday Night Market returns to Pearl for the month of May. Visitors can shop with their favorite local Farmers Market vendors and artisans while enjoying music by regional performers. Jose Amador and TERRA NOVA will perform at Pearl Park from 5:30p.m. to 7:30p.m. and Mariachi Las Coronelas Trio in Pearl Parkito from 4p.m. to 8p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, Bottling Department will host live music by El Tallercito de Son in Pearl Park and Fletcher’s Hamburgers will be serving carnitas all day. The Bar at the Bottling Department will also feature agave wine “Margaritas.”
Farmers Market 10 Year Anniversary Celebration – Saturday May 18
Pearl’s Farmers Market will celebrate its 10th anniversary this May. Since 2009, the market has grown to include 50 plus vendors representing the best in produce, meats, dairy, eggs and artisan foods from a 150-mile radius. Pearl’s market is the largest “producers-only” operation in San Antonio. San Antonio Botanical Gardens and CHEF (Culinary Health Education for Families) will offer demonstrations and activities for families, Wide Awake Creative will feature a produce-inspired photobooth and Artist Katy Sosa’s Keep Calm Y Dream On will offer an interactive art making station. The anniversary celebration will include live music and cupcakes from Bakery Lorraine. During the month of May, Pearl restaurants will showcase menu items featuring produce from Farmers Market vendors. All activations are free and open to the public.
Memorial Day Celebration- Monday May 27 from 2p.m. to 4p.m.
In honor of members of the armed forces who have passed, Pearl and The Bottling Department will have a crawfish boil by Bud’s Southern Rotisserie. There will be live music by the Gulf Coast Playboys, and more. Guests will be able to enjoy music and food while playing in the sun and Gustav’s Geysers.

Float Fest, the only festival in the world to combine the Texas tradition of floating the river and live music, recently announced a new venue for its 2019 festival. It will take place on Saturday July 20 and Sunday July 21 and will be moving to Gonzales, TX, which is about an hour outside of Austin as well as about an hour outside of San Antonio. The new location provides a greater proximity for Houston fans since it is about two hours from Houston. (Float Fest, 2019)
The festival will have all the amenities of floating the river, camping and live music, with the property being three times larger than past festivals. With river access to float being on-site at this year’s festival, no more shuttles are needed, which means immediate access to the water upon arrival. The camp grounds are a pecan orchard, with beautiful 200+ year old trees that provide tons of shade right by the Guadalupe River as well as larger camping sites with 20×20 spaces available. The festival also includes Improved traffic flow with multiple exit points. The new venue is a private ranch located in Gonzales county, just a few miles away for convenience with amenities such as hotels, restaurants, retail, supermarkets, and more.
Weekend tickets, day tickets and a limited amount of VIP tickets are now available for purchase online. Attendees will be able to enjoy a highly curated mix of alternative, rap, indie rock and EDM performers with two main stages that will offer fans a chance to catch every moment of main stage action with non-overlapping sets.
The 2019 Float Fest headliners Major Lazer, Portugal. The Man, Gucci Mane, Kaskade, Zeds Dead, Ice Cube, Big Gigantic and The Flaming Lips will close out the festival each night, performing popular crowd favorites. Other artists include Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Grouplove, Big Boi, Jungle, St. Lucia, Houndmouth, G Love & Special Sauce, Missio, The Floozies, Goldfish, Sego and Cowboy Diplomacy.
Gates to float the river will open at 8a.m. and tubing tickets can be purchased separately online; everyone must have a concert ticket to float the river. Held on the sprawling Guadalupe River on a private ranch, the festival grounds are quintessential to Central Texas. The festival features ample on-site parking and immediate access to the Guadalupe River. Float Fest will also have over 35 local unique food vendors for attendees to enjoy.
