Book review: ‘An Outlaw Makes It Home’ by Eli Jaxon-Bear

Eli Jaxon-Bear is an American spiritual teacher and author who worked as a mail boy, dishwasher, steel-worker, teacher and organic farmer. He was a community organizer with VISTA in Chicago and Detroit and was in a doctoral program at the Graduate School of International Studies in Denver, Colorado. He founded and teaches through The Leela Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting world peace and freedom through universal Self-realization. He has written “Wake Up and Roar,” “Sudden Awakening” and “From Fixation to Freedom.” “An Outlaw Makes It Home: The Awakening of a Spiritual Revolutionary,” his new book, is a memoir that recounts his life from a young man involved in a civil rights march in Alabama to his search for fulfillment in Japan and Morocco.

“An Outlaw Makes It Home” begins as the author shares his earliest childhood memory that influenced his life and character for years to come. The neighborhood kids were beating up his friend Mark and he decided to intervene, but it made the matter worse when one of them got hurt and his friends retaliated. “Now I was terrified of violence, of hurting someone else again, and of being hurt again myself…I credit this handicap with keeping me from a successful superficial life. It drove me to despair and beyond.”

The entire book is divided into six parts: Call to Adventure, Crossing the Threshold, The Abyss, The Odyssey, The Kingdom Appears and Freedom. The first two parts chronicle his activities during the civil rights era the Vietnam War. From there, his adventurous and nomadic life takes him across the world in search of happiness and fulfillment and eventually he discovers spiritual awakening alongside his wife and constant companion. The attached pictures chronicle his life from childhood to the file the FBI opened on him and the times spent with spiritual leaders in Japan and China.

This deeply personal and insightful memoir is an excellent example of a life spent in pursuit of a meaningful life. At an early age, he decided that he was solely responsible for his life and did not let family or friends influence him and instead took control of his own destiny, for better or worse. He faced life head-on despite the dangers he faced, including violence and drug experimentation. The language is easy to understand as he welcomes the reader along on a rollercoaster ride of emotions and adventures.

One standout part is in Part I Chapter 4: Which Side Are You On when he was in Montgomery when Dr Martin Luther King gave his “I Have a Dream” speech and the chilly experience afterwards when the Klan moved in on the gathered crowds. “We were shocked into stillness by the horror of what we were now seeing. Riding towards us…. came the Klan. The only sound we heard was the clip-clopping of the [horses’] hooves.” The other is on Part III: Chapter 12 Dying for Life when he describes in vivid detail his experience when he took LSD on his 25th birthday. “An Outlaw Makes It Home” by Eli Jaxon-Bear is a fascinating read that combines the turbulent era of the 60s and 70s with spiritual awakening and enlightenment. It has something for everyone and is recommended for readers interested in a first-person account of a life’s journey from troubled teen to spiritual adult.

Independence Brewing Co releases Native Texan

independencenativetexan
Native Texan is now available in stores.  Photo: Independence Brewing Co., used with permission.

Independence Brewing Co., an Austin-based brewing company, announces the release of Native Texan, a brand-new addition to the brewery’s seasonal roster of craft beer. The Independence brewing team sought to create a beer original in taste and style and one that would satisfy the taste buds of the German and Czech immigrants who settled in Central Texas over 180 years ago. The brew’s flavor profile is reflected in the use of 100% German pilsner malt, famed Augustiner yeast and a carefully proportioned selection of both German and Czech noble hops. (Independence Brewing Co., 2018)

Native Texan is a beer made by and for the people of the Lone Star State. It is a pilsner as German as the heritage of the Hill Country, as bright as the state’s “Friday Night Lights,” as clear as the West Texas sky and as smooth as an East Texan drawl. As it has been picked up by several Texas-born brands: Whole Foods Market, Buc-ee’s, HEB and Central Market, it is now available in stores across Texas. Native Texan is a versatile brew that can be enjoyed with a carefully curated cheese plate or a handful of Beaver Nuggets. Beer enthusiasts will soon find large displays of Native Texan in grocery stores and gas stations as Independence Day approaches.

Perfect for the summer season, Native Texan has an ABV of 5% making it highly sessionable during the scorching heat. Drinking the beer will bring back memories of days spent on the water and evenings spent on the porch swing, watching the bluebonnets bloom and the sun set, all reminders of why people fall in love with the Lone Star State in the first place.

“With this beer we wanted to give a big shout out to all Texans, near and far, who are proud to be from here—or who got here as fast as they could,” – Amy Cartwright, co-founder of Independence.

Theater review: ‘An American in Paris’ at the Majestic Theatre

americaninparis
‘An American in Paris’ plays at the Majestic Theatre until Sunday June 17. Photo: Broadway in San Antonio, used with permission.

North Park Lexus Broadway in San Antonio closes the season at the Majestic Theatre with the fabulously entertaining ‘An American in Paris.’ Last night was opening night of the stage adaptation of the beloved classic film of the same name that tells the story of an American soldier, a mysterious French girl and an indomitable European city, each longing for a new beginning after World War II. It is now playing through Sunday June 17 and tickets start at $35. Next show times are 7:30p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 8p.m. on Friday, 2p.m. and 8p.m. Saturday and 2p.m. and 7:30p.m. Sunday.

‘An American in Paris’ is set in 1945 Paris and begins as Adam Hochberg walks onto the stage, drinks a shot of liquor and sits at a lone piano onstage and tells the story of how his friend Jerry Mulligan came to Paris. In town after the liberation of France, US Army Lieutenant Jerry Mulligan sees a mysterious girl on the city streets (“Concerto in F”) and impulsively decides to stay to nurture his passion for painting. He meets Adam, a fellow veteran and pianist, at a café and they become friends. Henri Baurel, is the son of wealthy French industrialists and dreams of being an entertainer. The three of them bond over their shared interests and picture a brighter future (‘I Got Rhythm”) all the while falling for the same girl, Lise Dassin. In the end, Lise can only choose one, but Jerry, Adam and Henri agree that she changed their lives for the better. (“They Can’t Take That Away From Me”)

In true Hollywood musical style, ‘An American in Paris’ is a combination of dancing, romance, laughter and feel-good catchy songs. It features the music and lyrics of George and Ira Gershwin including songs like “I Got Rhythm,” “S Wonderful” and “The Man I Love” and orchestral music including “Concerto in F” and “An American In Paris.” McGee Maddox and Allison Walsh, as Jerry Mulligan and Allison Walsh, have the perfect chemistry to bring the story to life onstage and work well together with the rest of this talented cast. Show highlights include “I’ve Got Beginner’s Luck” when Jerry surprises Lise at work to convince her to meet with him, “Fidgety Feet” at one of the Baurel’s party and “I’ll Build a Stairway to Paradise” when Henri struts his stuff at a nightclub. Overall, this is a family-friendly production with gorgeous costumes, beautiful orchestral music and top-notch dancing, including ballet. Fans of the movie will appreciate this production, but it is not required viewing. It is a must-see nostalgic nod to classic musicals.

‘Assassins’ uses the premise of a murderous carnival game to produce a revue-style portrayal of men and women who have, successfully or not, attempted to assassinate Presidents of the United States. The musical numbers vary depending on the eras being depicted. While this production focuses on the individuals, there is a much deeper message.  The topic is one that has existed for decades and has now come to the forefront of everyday debate. While gun control seems to be to leading point of the discussion, the bigger question remains: what draws a person to violence? History shows that this is not a new problem. It is simply a growing one. Cast includes Chris Berry as John Wilkes Booth, Brendan Brady as Balladeer/Lee Harvey Oswald, Tyles Askins as The Proprietor, Brian Hodges as Charles Guiteau and James R Welch as John Hinckley.
