Jonathan Kellerman is a clinical psychologist and the best-selling author of psychological suspense novels. He has written more than thirty best-selling novels but he is best known for the Alex Delaware detective series. Since has worked extensively in the psychology field, his nonfiction writings include “Savage Spawn: Reflections on Violent Children” as well as medical texts, essays and scientific articles. His newest novel “Crime Scene” was co-written with his son Jesse Kellerman. Jesse Kellerman is an American novelist and playwright whose past novels include “Sunstroke,” “Trouble” and “The Golem of Hollywood,” co-written with his father.

According to Amazon, in “Crime Scene,” a former star athlete turned deputy coroner is drawn into a brutal and complicated murder. Clay Edison’s job is to determine whether someone’s death was natural causes or homicide. He does not get involved in investigations until one case proves more than meets the eye. When Walter Rennert is found dead at home everyone thinks it was an accident but wen his daughter Tatiana insists that he was murdered, Clay takes a closer look at his death. What he finds is a history of scandal and violence and an experiment gone horribly wrong. The closer he gets to the truth, the closer he gets to Tatiana and it all leads him into the darkest corners of the human soul.

Movie adaptation: ‘The Glass Castle’ by Jeannette Walls

Jeannette Walls is an American author and journalist best known as former gossip columnist for msnbc.com. Her memoir, “The Glass Castle,” tells the story of her childhood nomadic family and spent years on The New York Times best seller list. It sold over 2.7 million copies and has been translated into multiple languages. The movie adaptation starring Brie Larson, Naomi Watts and Woody Harrelson opens in theaters on Friday August 11, 2017.

According to Amazon, in “The Glass Castle” Walls recounts the unconventional, poverty-stricken upbringing she and her siblings had at the hands of their dysfunctional parents. When sober, her brilliant and charismatic father captured his children’s imagination while teaching them physics, geology and how to embrace life fearlessly. As a drunk, he was dishonest and destructive. Their mother was a free spirit who disliked the idea of domesticity. Because she did not like the responsibility of raising a family, the Walls children learned to take care of themselves and eventually moved to New York. Their parents followed them but even as their children prospered, they were often homeless. It is a story of resilience, redemption and a family whose life was both dysfunctional and vibrant.

Austin Eastciders, in partnership with DoStuff Media, is launching Eastciders Ramble, a traveling cider and music series. Its mission is to support the local art community by pairing local artists with cider across the markets that sell Austin Eastciders. The series will highlight emerging artists and creators in their own cities all while focusing on the community and neighborhood and adding delicious cider. Tasting Tuesdays at Krause’s Café

Krause’s Café in New Braunfels announces ‘Tasting Tuesdays,’ a weekly event where they will host spirit distilleries, wineries and breweries from across Texas. Every Tuesday from 4p.m. to 6p.m., they will feature a regional spirit and beer or wine paired with food samples from the host kitchen. Guests will be able to sample items from Texas vendors such as Goliad Brewing, Black Eyed Distilling Co., Borne Brewing, Pepe Zevada Z Tequila, Altmeyer & Lewis Brewing Co., Republic Tequila and more. This event is free and open to the public on a first come, first served basis until items run out. There will also be additional food and drinks available for purchase. (Krause’s Café, 2017)

Krause’s Café is a New Braunfels historic restaurant that opened in 1938 and ran successfully until 1995. Recently it reopened and while keeping true to the original traditions it now has a ‘biergarten,’ live music and more. The menu reflects its German heritage and South Texas flavors while offering over 70 beers that include local, regional and international options as well as cocktails and wines on tap.

‘Lorca’ at The Classic Theatre of San Antonio

Coming up at the The Classic Theatre of San Antonio as part of the Classic Presents series, José Rubén De León will be starring in the San Antonio premiere of his one man show ‘Lorca.’ Playwright-actor-vocalist José Rubén De León covers major aspects of the life and work of Spain’s best-known poet and one of the most significant writers of the twentieth century, Federico García Lorca. The Spanish Civil War serves as a political background for ‘Lorca,’ a performance which introduces audiences to García Lorca’s prose, poetry, theatre and songs, as well as to the people who played significant roles at different stages in his life. It is directed by José Rubén De León and opens on Friday August 18 and will run until Sunday August 27, 2017. Show times are Friday and Saturday at 8p.m. and Sunday at 3p.m. and 8p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission and are available online. There will be no late seating at any performance. Federico García Lorca was a Spanish poet, playwright, theater director and a member of Generation of ’27, a group of poets who introduced symbolism, futurism, and surrealism into Spanish literature. He was executed by Nationalists forces at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War at the age of 38 and his body was never found. Motives for his assassination range from personal and non-political to political, since he known for his outspoken socialist views.

‘The King And I’ is set in 1860s Bangkok and tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher hired by the King to teach his many wives and children. It is based on Margaret Landon’s novel “Anna and the King of Siam” which is based on the memoirs of Anna Leonowens who was the governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam. The fifth musical by Rodgers & Hammerstein, it is directed by Tony Award® winner Bartlett Sher and is the winner of four 2015 Tony Awards® including Best Revival of a Musical. The score features such classics as “Getting to Know You,” “Hello Young Lovers,” “Shall We Dance,” “I Have Dreamed” and “Something Wonderful.”

Movie adaptation: The Dark Tower series by Stephen King

Stephen King is an American author of horror, supernatural fiction, suspense, science fiction and fantasy. His books have sold more than 350 million copies and many of them have been adapted into feature films, miniseries, television shows and comic books. He is best known for “Carrie,” “It,” “The Green Mile” and the Dark Tower series. The movie adaptation of the Dark Tower series is set to be released on Friday August 4 and stars Idris Elba as Roland Deschain, a gunslinger on a quest to protect the Dark Tower, and Matthew McConaughey as his nemesis, Walter o’Dim, the ‘Man in Black.’

According to Wikipedia, the Dark Tower is a series of eight books that combines multiple genres including dark fantasy, science fantasy, horror and Western. It expands on King’s multiverse and links together many of his other novels. The story centers on a “gunslinger” and his quest to protect the Dark Tower, a mythical structure which supports all realties. The inspirations for the series includes the poem “Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came” by Robert Browning as well as The Lord of the Rings, Arthurian Legend and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. The movie is a continuation of the series and takes place in both modern-day New York City and Mid-World, Roland’s Old West-style parallel universe. Roland is on a quest to reach the Dark Tower in End-World and reach the nexus point between time and space that he hopes will save humanity from extinction. It is a sequel to the events that take place in the books.

Whataburger celebrates children’s superhero spirit

This Thursday August 3, Whataburger restaurants will celebrate the spirit of superheroes with an evening of family fun. San Antonio area families are invited to a Super-Duper Celebration only at the Whataburger located at 516 W Cypress St from 5p.m. to 7p.m. Customers will be able to spend quality time with their little heroes and treat them to a superhero-themed celebration that includes food and giveaways. There will be a balloon artist and a face painter onsite as well as a photo booth and a special appearance from Whataburger’s mascot, Whataguy. This event is to support the mission of the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio which provides specialized programs and extends whole-health treatment to children. A donation to the organization will be presented. Children 12 and under dressed in a superhero costume will also receive a free kid’s meal.

Best seller of the month: ‘The Late Show’ by Michael Connelly

New to the best seller list on The New York Times is “The Late Show” by Michael Connelly. It was released this month and it holds the number one spot on the list. Michael Connelly is the author of detective novels and other crime fiction, the most popular being the ones featuring LAPD Detective Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch and criminal defense attorney Mickey Haller. With “The Late Show” he introduces Renee Ballard, a young detective fighting to prove herself on the LAPD’s toughest beat.

According to Amazon, in “The Late Show,” Renee Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, also known as the Late Show. She was once an up-and-coming detective but she was given this shift as punishment for filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. Now, she begins many investigations but does not finish them because each morning she turns everything over to the day shift. One night she gets two assignments that she does not want to hand off: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Determined not to let go of the cases, she works both by day while maintaining her shift by night. The deeper she delves into the investigation, the closer they pull her to her own demons.

Michael Connelly is the best-selling author of twenty-eight novels and one work of fiction. He has sold over sixty million copies of his books worldwide and they have been translated into thirty-nine foreign languages. Before turning to writing, he was a newspaper reporter who worked the crime beat at the Los Angeles Times and the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel. His first book, “The Black Echo” won the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Award for Best First Novel in 1992. Movie adaptations of his novels include “Blood Work” starring Clint Eastwood and “The Lincoln Lawyer” starring Matthew McConaughey. The series of books featuring Harry Bosch is now an Amazon Studios drama series starring Titus Wellliver and is streaming on Amazon Prime.

Theater review: ‘Clear to Partly Crazy’ at The Classic Theatre

‘Clear to Partly Crazy’ opened at The Classic Theatre of San Antonio last night as Jaston Williams brings his one-man show to San Antonio audiences. Picking up where he left off after ‘A Wolverine Walks Into a Bar,’ he muses on subjects from cheerleaders to tornadoes and certifiably insane blood relatives. It is written and performed by Jaston Williams and no late seating is allowed at any performance. Next show times are Friday at 8p.m. Saturday at 3p.m. and 8p.m. and Sunday at 3p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission and are available online and at the box office.

Before the show, he takes the time to welcome everyone and say how happy he is to be back in San Antonio despite the hot weather. The stories contained in this show are: An Empty Space, The Whistle and A Window Seat to Never, Neverland. Dressed casually in a robe, pajamas and slippers he begins with a rant about how silly television is nowadays with reality shows and other nonsensical forms of ‘entertainment’ including televised cheerleading competitions. Being from West Texas, he can relate to football culture and the one thing that comes with it: cheerleaders. This is the topic of An Empty Space where he recalls how important they were to high school society. Tornadoes and storm shelters take center stage on The Whistle while a family member’s unfortunate bout with mental illness and institutions make it into A Window Seat to Never, Neverland.

Fans of Jaston Williams and his brand of comedy are in for a treat with ‘Clear to Partly Crazy.’ He always manages to find the humor in even the bleakest of situations. His animated storytelling pulls the audience in as they hang on to his every word. After the laughter dies down every story has its serious side; an especially poignant moment is his quiet ode to his cousin as he ended A Window Seat to Never, Neverland. Some of the references may be aged but that should not be a deterrent. Laughter and humor, after all, are ageless. It is a must see show that explores the themes of politics, television, natural disasters and family but most of all, it is a reminder not to take life so seriously.
