Exploring the Chemical Frontier: A Review of ‘Strained Sigma Bonds’ by Arasibo Campeche

Embark on adventures with stories about science, magic, the tarot, Haitian vodou, the clash of epistemologies, and addiction. Photo: Amazon

“Strained Sigma Bonds” expertly combines the workings of science with an intense narrative. Arasibo Campeche explores the complexities of chemical concepts and uses them to create engaging stories that are accessible to both academics and curious readers alike. His writing style is as captivating as it is informative, blending personal tales, that are often narrated in the first person, with scientific insight. The language is descriptive and lures the reader into the story: “…following me through the forest like a slow-moving orgy ascendant from hell.”

Stories include:
Penalties of Entropy
Given Pain,
Magnetization and Resistance
Regret in Blue Sharp
Big Water Protect You
Flavor of Lab
Conservation of Cold
The Greater Secrets of Carbocations
One Step Forward, Two Steps Starways, Three Steps Plop!
Trompe-l’oeil
The Organometallic God
Butter Me Up and Float Me Sideways
Drowned in Mindfulness
First Blink
The Chroma of Home

Highlights:

Big Water Protect You – a survivor of a plane crash in the Puerto Rican rainforest, who has a PhD in biochemistry but was drafted into the army and sent to solve The Plague, encounters man made zombies. The CRISPR/Cas9 technology that was used to help cure many illnesses had inadvertently re-animated the dead. “That the ancient dead could be revived was one thing, but biting a bullet out of a wound…Signs of intelligence were a whole new problem.”

Conservation of Cold – Alicia dies from a heroin OD but her spirit is trapped at home with her grandmother. She doesn’t have the mass necessary to move objects but she can absorb people’s heat to move around, similar to a Carnot engine that transforms heat into mechanical energy. When her grandmother dies later that same day, her spirit is also trapped at home. Furious that she is not in heaven, she blames Alicia and attacks her and gouges her eyes out. Now Alicia can’t see and she is freezing cold. Her only hope is that someone eventually hears her. “…a chill spiraled up my spine like fingers flicking air out of a syringe.”

This is science meets horror and sci-fi at its best and Campeche uses it to successfully explore the darker aspects of the human condition with themes such as redemption, love, death, and survival. The stories are deep and reflective and the characters are relatable, each dealing with his or her own demons, whether real, imagined, or tech/science-related.

Overall, ‘Strained Sigma Bonds’ is a brilliant collection of short stories that has science, especially biochemistry, at its core. The author manages to make it easy to understand and follow, so that even if you’re not a science person, you will appreciate how it enriches the narrative. It is a must-read for anyone fascinated by the intersection of biochemistry and human interest, offering not just knowledge but a profound appreciation for the elegance of scientific inquiry. Fans of thought provoking science fiction, horror, and especially speculative fiction will find it fascinating.

“You march on the ocean floor, heading northwest, hungry for the pound of flesh owed to your people.”

Thrills and Twists: A Review of ‘The Bucharest Legacy’ by William Maz

‘The Bucharest Legacy’ is the latest novel in the Bill Hefflin Spy Thriller Series by William Maz. Photo: Amazon

William Maz was born in Bucharest, Romania, of Greek parents and emigrated to the U.S. as a child. He is a graduate of Harvard University, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and Yale residency. He studied writing at Harvard, the New School, The Writer’s Studio in New York City, and with Gordon Lish, and is now writing full time. He is the author of the Bill Hefflin Spy Thriller Series that includes “The Bucharest Dossier” and “The Bucharest Legacy.” In “The Bucharest Legacy,” CIA agent Bill Hefflin is back in Bucharest and right in the middle of spies and crooked politicians as he looks for a KGB mile inside the Agency. (Amazon, 2024)

“The Bucharest Legacy” – The CIA is rocked to its core when a KGB defector divulges that there is a KGB mole inside the Agency. They learn that the mole’s handler is a KGB agent known as Boris. Bill Hefflin recognizes that name—Boris is the code name of Hefflin’s longtime KGB asset. If the defector is correct, Hefflin realizes Boris must be a triple agent, and his supposed mole has been passing false intel to Hefflin and the CIA. This makes Hefflin the prime suspect as the KGB mole inside the Agency.

Hefflin is given a chance to prove his innocence by returning to his city of birth, Bucharest, Romania, to find Boris and track down the identity of the mole. It’s been three years since the bloody revolution, but the country is controlled by the underground and the new oligarchs, all of whom want to find Boris. But Hefflin has a secret that no one else knows—Boris has been dead for over a year.

This espionage thriller takes place in a post-Cold War Europe and expertly combines history, intrigue, and contemporary geopolitics into a thrilling narrative. The story begins in Romania in 1993 as he is put in charge of driving a KGB defector to the American embassy but the mission is compromised and he has to take him to a safer location, his family’s old apartment. So begins Bill Hefflin’s journey of uncovering a mysterious conspiracy rooted in the aftermath of Ceausescu’s Romania.

Maz’s writing is crisp and haunting, painting vivid pictures of European cities scarred by history yet pulsating with modern life. The language is descriptive and makes the action come to life: “The building windows burst, shards sprayed both Hefflin and the defector and crackled on the cobblestones like fine sleet. A ball of fire hurtled high above the buildings, followed by the cries of men.” The characters are well developed and compelling, especially Hefflin, whose relentless pursuit of the truth drives the plot forward with each twist and revelation.

The author’s deep understanding of espionage and geopolitical forces gives the story authenticity and keeps readers on the edge of their seats. He expertly explores the themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the consequences of historical secrets, delivering a narrative that is both intellectually stimulating and poignant.

Overall, “The Bucharest Legacy” is a suspenseful thriller that will appeal to fans of international espionage and political intrigue similar to the works of John le Carré and Brad Thor. It offers an intriguing glimpse into the shadowy world of intelligence operations within the backdrop of Europe’s turbulent history.

“He took a deep breath and forced his mind to look at her the way his father, the doctor, must have looked upon the body of a patient, and as Catherine had taught him to look upon an assailant, without regard to their humanity. It was the only way he could do what she was asking.”

Navigating ‘Escape the Meatrix’: A Book Review

‘Escape the Meatrix’ is the thought provoking and inspiring book by Stuart Waldner. Photo: Amazon

Stuart Waldner didn’t set out to be an activist. After two decades of exploring Earth’s greatest wonders and connecting with sacred sites around the globe, he transitioned to a plant-based lifestyle in 2008. The better he felt, and the more he learned about the statistical connections between our dietary choices and the worldwide crises we’re about to face, the more he felt called to wake people up—for our health and for the planet. His book “Escape the Meatrix” chronicles his eye-opening battle against climate change as he exposes the real reason veggies are more expensive than a burger (it’s not what you think); the shocking list of diseases that a plant-based lifestyle can slow, prevent, or even cure; and how America’s declining health is linked directly to corporate profit. (Amazon, 2024)

“Escape the Meatrix” – What if you suddenly discovered you were trapped inside a dystopian cult of oppression, murder, and profit—and that your greatest source of calories was an artificially invented diet created by powerful lobbies, designed to line the pockets of the 1% at the cost of your own health and the planet’s very survival? What would you do?

We might not like the truth, but the cost of ignorance is far too high. Will you take the blue pill and let the planet burn? Or will you take the red pill, open this book, and Escape the Meatrix?

“Escape the Meatrix” is a thought-provoking and timely exploration of our current industrial food system. Drawing parallels to the famous “Matrix” film series, Waldner challenges readers to awaken from a metaphorical slumber induced by mass-produced, factory-farmed food. He exposes the environmental, ethical, and health implications of industrial agriculture, urging readers to question the origins and impacts of their food choices.

Chapters include:
Chapter 1: What Is the Meatrix?
Chapter 2: Out of Sight, Out of Mind
Chapter 3: Escape the Meatrix for Your Health
Chapter 4: Escape the Meatrix for the Planet
Chapter 5:Escape the Meatrix for the Animals
Chapter 6: Speciesism
Chapter 7: The Cult of the Meatrix
Chapter 8: Isn’t Veganism Extreme?
Chapter 9: Tradition, Taste, and Convenience?
Chapter 10: Cognitive Dissonance
Chapter 11: The USDA Dietary Guidelines
Chapter 12: The Meat Myth: Marketing and Low Prices
Chapter 13: Feel Great!
Chapter 14: Making the Transition
Conclusion: Finally…Highlighting the Basics
Acknowledgements
Appendix: The Five Fundamentals for a Successful Transition to a Whole-Foods, Plant-Based Lifestyle

The author’s writing style is simple yet profound, and includes hard-hitting facts and statistics. He manages to convey complex issues surrounding food production and consumption in a way that is engaging and understandable for readers of all ages. It serves as a powerful call to action, encouraging readers to seek out sustainable and ethical alternatives to conventional food practices. By empowering individuals to make informed decisions about what they eat he highlights the importance of supporting local farmers and advocating for animal welfare.

Overall, “Escape the Meatrix” is a compelling read that challenges its audience to reconsider their relationship with food and take steps towards a more sustainable future. It is recommended for readers interested in learning more about the benefits of a plant-based diet, as well as wellness, recycling, conservation, and sustainability.

Explore Tranquility and Creativity with ‘Bold & Easy Coloring Book’ | Review

‘Bold & Easy Coloring Book’ is fun for adults and kids. Photo: Amazon

Coloring books offer a serene escape into a world of tranquility and creativity. They allow for creative expression without pressure and provide a mindful reprieve from the chaos of daily life. Engaging in the simple act of coloring promotes focus and mindfulness, allowing worries to melt away as strokes of color fill the page and fostering a sense of calm and relaxation. Through the gentle rhythm of coloring, stress dissipates, leaving behind a peaceful mind and rejuvenated spirit. In this meditative journey, the canvas becomes a sanctuary for self-expression and inner peace. With a wide variety of themes available, from intricate mandalas to whimsical animals, these books cater to many tastes and can be enjoyed for short bursts or longer sessions.

Coloring books for relaxation and mindfulness activities have surged in popularity in recent years as a simple and effective way to unwind. The repetitive motions of coloring and the focus required to stay within the lines can induce a meditative state, promoting relaxation and reducing stress.

“Bold & Easy Coloring Book” by Inkers Fun contains large print designs that both adults and children can enjoy, but the thick lines are suitable for beginners. The theme is ‘Food & Snacks’ and it features 50 food and snack images. On one page is the numbered image with a description and the image to be colored is on the opposite page. I like that the description guides us regarding which colors to use, for example, image 34 “A bottle of refreshing water with lemon slices and mint leaves” Of course, they’re just suggestions, you can always be an original and use unique colors. The designs are big so it doesn’t take too long to finish. The blank pages at the end are an excellent way to make sure the color ink doesn’t bleed through, just cut and place the page behind the design you’re working on. The overall size is not too big or bulky, making it easy to handle, especially if children are using it.

Overall, this “Bold & Easy Coloring Book” is an excellent way to relax and be creative, regardless of age. So next time you need a break from the daily grind, grab some crayons, or markers, and let your worries melt away. Hopefully, it won’t make you hungry looking at all those snacks.

Poetic Dystopian Fiction: ‘Autumn Blooms Red’ by L Cuzidora

Poetic Dystopian Fiction: ‘Autumn Blooms Red’ by L Cuzidora
‘Autumn Blooms Red’ by L Cuzidora Photo: Amazon

L Cuzidora is a proud rat mother from Transylvania, Eastern Europe. She studied Sociology and Environmental Sciences and wishes she’d had started writing at an earlier age. Now she’s determined to make up for all the years spent jumping from one passion to another and devotes herself to exploring even more flawed characters. Her book “Autumn Blooms Red” (Red Gladiola Book 1) centers around Avril and Irina’s relationship in a dystopian society.

Synopsis: It’s been a decade since Avril’s family was exiled to Ordea’s smallest province. While not entirely stripped of power, her mother’s bitterness blinds her to Avril’s needs. So when an old friend of her mother’s shows up with plans of rehabilitation, Avril is quick to join. As months pass and no concrete steps are taken, her own approach becomes ever more reckless. After all, she can count on her parents’ support. But what’s the weight of family in a society striving towards equality?

Orphaned at a young age, Irina clings to her family’s traditions in a secular world. She finds little comfort in the State’s promises of safety, determined, despite the risks, to help those unable or unwilling to live by the party directive. To her, Avril is a special sort of circumstantial victim, one who’s not even aware of her imprisonment. But when her faith revolves around leading others onto the right path, who’s to watch that she won’t lose herself? (Amazon, 2024)

Review: “Autumn Blooms Red” by L. Cuzidora is an intriguing story that explores the elements of romance, mystery, and self-discovery. Set against the backdrop of a militaristic society complete with parades, soldiers, one child policies, and food rations, it follows the journeys of Avril and Irina. Avril’s family has been exiled and her mother has selfish motivations that don’t include Avril. Irina was orphaned at a young age and struggles to survive emotionally in a repressive society. They seem like polar opposites, but they find each other.

The narration is in the first person point of view and the chapters are short and alternate between the two, so readers get an insight into their specific mindset. While the main characters are deeply developed and relatable, the secondary characters have their own compelling stories and motivations, adding depth and dimension to the narrative.

The author’s prose is rich and beautifully poetic, filled with vivid imagery, which paints a picturesque landscape that effortlessly transports readers into the heart of the narrative: “Orange light knives through the shutters of our bedroom. I’ve exhausted every corner of my pillow, searching for a cool spot.” She expertly weaves twists and turns that keep the suspense alive and make the action flow effortlessly through the pages.

Overall, it’s a poignant and compelling story about resilience and the power of human connection. It will no doubt linger in the hearts of readers long after they’ve turned the final page. It is an easy read and recommended for readers who enjoy dystopian fiction filled with flawed characters amid unique worlds and settings.
