Review and Insights: ‘Side Effects Are Minimal’ by Laura Essay

‘Side Effects Are Minimal’ is the new legal thriller by Laura Essay. Photo: Amazon

Laura Essay attended the University of Nebraska and obtained a law degree from Creighton University School of Law. When her three grown children moved on to graduate programs in other cities, writing became her passion. “Side Effects Are Minimal,” her debut novel, is about a corrupt pharmaceutical industry, the guilt of physicians prescribing the opioids that kill, and the pain experienced by families who have lost loved ones to a widespread epidemic. Her knowledge of the opioid crisis stems from her passion for research and countless hours spent searching for the truth about opioids in America.

Synopsis:

“Side Effects Are Minimal” – ambitious attorney Claire Hewitt is asked to represent the Satoris, one of Philadelphia’s most prominent families in a lawsuit over the death of their daughter Emma. She is thrust into an opioid nightmare with deadly impact—and not for the first time. Even after twenty years after her sister Molly’s death from what she believes to be an opioid-related death, Claire still feels guilty for not being able to help her. Now, with this new assignment, her guilt comes full circle. Who was really at fault in Molly’s death? And who is at fault now?

Claire struggles to balance her desire for justice with the Satoris’ thirst for revenge. She knows she needs to expose the greed that transforms legal opioid production into illicit fabrications and the neglect that is the breaking point between physicians and their patients. There are powerful people who will seemingly stop at nothing to prevent these truths from seeing the light of day, and she is sabotaged at every turn. Can she push past the obstacles in her way to build a winning case?

Review:

The opioid epidemic in America has devastated communities nationwide, claiming countless lives and leaving a trail of shattered families. Laura Essay expertly combines real events with a compelling narrative. The story begins as Claire is excited at being assigned the Sartoris case even though in the long run it might be a class action suit. She is nervous but looking forward to the challenge partially because the opioid crisis affected her family as well when her sister Molly passed away and she sees this case as a way to get justice for her as well. Her character is confident and qualified but right from the beginning when she is assaulted and her briefcase is stolen, it becomes evident that there will be strong forces out to stop her at all costs.

I was drawn to this novel because of its exploration of the human experience within the medical and legal systems. The fictional court case brings to light the heartache faced by families touched by this crisis and how it transcends demographics, but at least the parents in this story are lucky to be wealthy enough to be able to sue the pharmaceutical supplier. The courtroom drama and the hard work by the lawyers and everyone working behind the scenes to bring these cases to court is gripping and eye-opening.

Essay’s writing style makes it easy to follow the medical and legal terms because she doesn’t use overly complicated jargon. Her use of descriptive language immerses the reader in the action: “Beads of sweat glistened on his upper lip and beside the veins spider-webbing his nostrils.” The characters she creates are vivid and relatable, each struggling with their own challenges and triumphs. This story explores the themes of family, courage, and power/corruption and the challenges that come in times of crisis. Highlights include the in-depth research on the case and Chapter 24 No Friend of Mine when Claire is given the spotlight when the trial begins.

Overall, “Side Effects Are Minimal” is a compelling novel that reminds us of the power of the court system and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of medical challenges. It is recommended for readers interested in learning more about the opioid epidemic and enjoy medical thrillers by Robin Cook, legal thrillers by Mike Papantonio and John Grisham, and strong female characters.

“Claire’s movements revealed the sorrow she felt. Her fingers glided along each line as she read. She whispered their names. She grimaced and smiled and often looked to the ceiling for a break. She squeezed her eyes shut when a break wasn’t enough.”

From Diagnosis to Treatment: A Review of ‘Ready, Set, Radiation’

Prepare for your radiation therapy journey with ‘Ready, Set, Radiation: How to Prepare for Radiation Therapy Treatments.’ Photo: Amazon

“Ready, Set, Radiation” is a comprehensive guide for those about to go through radiation therapy. While similar books are written by former patients, a medical professional wrote this one. Drawing from her own experience as a radiation therapist, Shaina Moore-Ivanov presents a clear and accessible roadmap through the uncertainty of cancer treatment. The goal is “to introduce you and your support system to radiation treatment as it pertains to cancer.”

The practical advice covers everything from understanding the radiation process to managing side effects and preparing emotionally and physically for each session. She addresses common fears and uncertainties and offers reassurances and empowers readers to take an active role in their treatment.

Some of the chapters include:
Chapter 1 Cancer Diagnosis – What Comes Next?
Chapter 2 What is Radiation Therapy?
Chapter 5 – Factors to Consider When Deciding Where to Undergo Treatment
Chapter 6 – Consultation with a Radiation Oncologist
Chapter 8 – CT Simulation – General information
Chapter 9 – Tattoos, Patient Autonomy, and Self-Advocacy
Chapter 22 – Scheduling Daily Treatment Appointment
Chapter 23 – Arriving On Time and Prepared for Treatment
Chapter 24 – Radiation Oncology Team
Chapter 26 – Final Day of Treatment

Highlights:
Chapter 1 Cancer Diagnosis – What Comes Next? – reminds patients “to advocate for yourself and to ask questions.” She explains that everyone’s treatment is different because not all cancers respond to treatment and that if you want a second opinion, to get one. The doctors will not be offended.

Chapter 8 – CT Simulation – General information – explains that the purpose of CT Simulation is to decide on the best position for you to be in when receiving radiation treatment which helps plan your treatment. The area will be marked to detail where the treatment will be.

She expertly combines medical expertise and human connection so that it’s not just a technical manual; it’s a companion that understands the fears and challenges patients face. The language is straightforward and doesn’t use complicated medical jargon, making it accessible to everyone involved in the treatment journey. I especially like that the tone is empathetic to patients without being condescending. The figures and pictures make it easy to understand the chapters on body positioning and the different machines being discussed. There are QR codes that you can scan for videos that further explain the topic.

Overall, “Ready, Set, Radiation” is an invaluable resource for patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals alike. Since it provides not only vital information but also a sense of solidarity and guidance during a challenging time, it is recommended for anyone facing radiation therapy or who knows someone who is.

Finding Harmony: The Message of ‘Peace Over Politics’ by Tonja Myles

The new book ‘Peace Over Politics’ gives practical tools to manage mental health and chronic stress during election season. Photo: Amazon

The mental health crisis in America persists as a silent epidemic, affecting millions across all demographics. Despite increased awareness, stigma and inadequate access to care have worsened the situation, leaving many untreated or undertreated, especially among marginalized communities. Anxiety and depression rates are soaring, compounded by societal pressures, economic instability, and now, the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Addressing this crisis demands systemic changes, from policy reforms to efforts to destigmatize getting treatment, to ensure every individual has access to the support they need for their mental well-being.

In her new book, author Tonja Myles and mental health expert addresses the importance of protecting your inner peace during political chaos. Polarized politics and never-ending news cycles have created a national mental health crisis that will only worsen if people cannot build needed skills to survive. (Tonja Myles, 2024)

“Today’s political climate is more divisive than ever, and you have to protect your inner peace and mental health like never before. Our current election season is a source of chronic stress that will only worsen if we do not learn the needed skills to cope.” – 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline subject matter expert and spokeswoman Tonja Myles

Released this month, “Peace Over Politics: How to Navigate Protecting Your Peace During Political Climates,” gives readers practical tools to manage this crisis. According to the American Psychological Association, following daily political news can negatively affect your mental health, but disengaging from society can be harmful too, she says. Myles, a community engagement advisor for the Huntsman Family Foundation and mental health expert, says everyone must learn how to practice self-care while balancing good citizenship, regardless of political party.

The book shows readers how to cultivate inner harmony while engaging in compassionate activism to create positive change in the world. With these skills, people can gracefully navigate political differences and create unity within their communities, she says.

The book “shares many of the tools, tips, and resources that are needed to build a blueprint for living whole and well even when much around us, online and offline, is loud, divisive, and needlessly harmful,” says American Psychiatric Association Foundation Executive Director, Rawle Andrews Jr.

“Peace Over Politics: How to Navigate Protecting Your Peace During Political Climates” will help readers:

  • Understand inner harmony – become self-aware and emotionally balanced so you can navigate political discourse with composure and empathy
  • Reflect on your values – examine your values and determine how they align with your desire for peace amidst political influences
  • Navigate ideological differences – engage in constructive conversations with empathy and active listening to foster understanding and bridge divides
  • Make healthy boundaries – set and assert healthy boundaries to protect your peace in the face of political discourse and societal pressures
  • Create community connections – engage in community activities, promote dialogue, and collaborate to cultivate your peace and shared understanding amidst political differences
  • Practice compassionate activism – create positive changes in the world while you prioritize your peace and well-being

Navigating ‘Escape the Meatrix’: A Book Review

‘Escape the Meatrix’ is the thought provoking and inspiring book by Stuart Waldner. Photo: Amazon

Stuart Waldner didn’t set out to be an activist. After two decades of exploring Earth’s greatest wonders and connecting with sacred sites around the globe, he transitioned to a plant-based lifestyle in 2008. The better he felt, and the more he learned about the statistical connections between our dietary choices and the worldwide crises we’re about to face, the more he felt called to wake people up—for our health and for the planet. His book “Escape the Meatrix” chronicles his eye-opening battle against climate change as he exposes the real reason veggies are more expensive than a burger (it’s not what you think); the shocking list of diseases that a plant-based lifestyle can slow, prevent, or even cure; and how America’s declining health is linked directly to corporate profit. (Amazon, 2024)

“Escape the Meatrix” – What if you suddenly discovered you were trapped inside a dystopian cult of oppression, murder, and profit—and that your greatest source of calories was an artificially invented diet created by powerful lobbies, designed to line the pockets of the 1% at the cost of your own health and the planet’s very survival? What would you do?

We might not like the truth, but the cost of ignorance is far too high. Will you take the blue pill and let the planet burn? Or will you take the red pill, open this book, and Escape the Meatrix?

“Escape the Meatrix” is a thought-provoking and timely exploration of our current industrial food system. Drawing parallels to the famous “Matrix” film series, Waldner challenges readers to awaken from a metaphorical slumber induced by mass-produced, factory-farmed food. He exposes the environmental, ethical, and health implications of industrial agriculture, urging readers to question the origins and impacts of their food choices.

Chapters include:
Chapter 1: What Is the Meatrix?
Chapter 2: Out of Sight, Out of Mind
Chapter 3: Escape the Meatrix for Your Health
Chapter 4: Escape the Meatrix for the Planet
Chapter 5:Escape the Meatrix for the Animals
Chapter 6: Speciesism
Chapter 7: The Cult of the Meatrix
Chapter 8: Isn’t Veganism Extreme?
Chapter 9: Tradition, Taste, and Convenience?
Chapter 10: Cognitive Dissonance
Chapter 11: The USDA Dietary Guidelines
Chapter 12: The Meat Myth: Marketing and Low Prices
Chapter 13: Feel Great!
Chapter 14: Making the Transition
Conclusion: Finally…Highlighting the Basics
Acknowledgements
Appendix: The Five Fundamentals for a Successful Transition to a Whole-Foods, Plant-Based Lifestyle

The author’s writing style is simple yet profound, and includes hard-hitting facts and statistics. He manages to convey complex issues surrounding food production and consumption in a way that is engaging and understandable for readers of all ages. It serves as a powerful call to action, encouraging readers to seek out sustainable and ethical alternatives to conventional food practices. By empowering individuals to make informed decisions about what they eat he highlights the importance of supporting local farmers and advocating for animal welfare.

Overall, “Escape the Meatrix” is a compelling read that challenges its audience to reconsider their relationship with food and take steps towards a more sustainable future. It is recommended for readers interested in learning more about the benefits of a plant-based diet, as well as wellness, recycling, conservation, and sustainability.

Poetic Dystopian Fiction: ‘Autumn Blooms Red’ by L Cuzidora

Poetic Dystopian Fiction: ‘Autumn Blooms Red’ by L Cuzidora
‘Autumn Blooms Red’ by L Cuzidora Photo: Amazon

L Cuzidora is a proud rat mother from Transylvania, Eastern Europe. She studied Sociology and Environmental Sciences and wishes she’d had started writing at an earlier age. Now she’s determined to make up for all the years spent jumping from one passion to another and devotes herself to exploring even more flawed characters. Her book “Autumn Blooms Red” (Red Gladiola Book 1) centers around Avril and Irina’s relationship in a dystopian society.

Synopsis: It’s been a decade since Avril’s family was exiled to Ordea’s smallest province. While not entirely stripped of power, her mother’s bitterness blinds her to Avril’s needs. So when an old friend of her mother’s shows up with plans of rehabilitation, Avril is quick to join. As months pass and no concrete steps are taken, her own approach becomes ever more reckless. After all, she can count on her parents’ support. But what’s the weight of family in a society striving towards equality?

Orphaned at a young age, Irina clings to her family’s traditions in a secular world. She finds little comfort in the State’s promises of safety, determined, despite the risks, to help those unable or unwilling to live by the party directive. To her, Avril is a special sort of circumstantial victim, one who’s not even aware of her imprisonment. But when her faith revolves around leading others onto the right path, who’s to watch that she won’t lose herself? (Amazon, 2024)

Review: “Autumn Blooms Red” by L. Cuzidora is an intriguing story that explores the elements of romance, mystery, and self-discovery. Set against the backdrop of a militaristic society complete with parades, soldiers, one child policies, and food rations, it follows the journeys of Avril and Irina. Avril’s family has been exiled and her mother has selfish motivations that don’t include Avril. Irina was orphaned at a young age and struggles to survive emotionally in a repressive society. They seem like polar opposites, but they find each other.

The narration is in the first person point of view and the chapters are short and alternate between the two, so readers get an insight into their specific mindset. While the main characters are deeply developed and relatable, the secondary characters have their own compelling stories and motivations, adding depth and dimension to the narrative.

The author’s prose is rich and beautifully poetic, filled with vivid imagery, which paints a picturesque landscape that effortlessly transports readers into the heart of the narrative: “Orange light knives through the shutters of our bedroom. I’ve exhausted every corner of my pillow, searching for a cool spot.” She expertly weaves twists and turns that keep the suspense alive and make the action flow effortlessly through the pages.

Overall, it’s a poignant and compelling story about resilience and the power of human connection. It will no doubt linger in the hearts of readers long after they’ve turned the final page. It is an easy read and recommended for readers who enjoy dystopian fiction filled with flawed characters amid unique worlds and settings.

Children’s books are magical portals to worlds where imagination knows no bounds. From the whimsical tales of talking animals to fantastical adventures in far-off lands, these books ignite curiosity and foster creativity. Vibrant illustrations breathe life into characters, captivating young minds and sparking endless wonder. Brownsville native Lucille Newton Cascos has a new children’s book that centers around a young opossum named Tikito titled “Tikito el Tlacuachito del Barrio: Father and Son’s Life Lessons of a Brownsville Native Opossum Who Dared to Dream.” I attended a book signing she had on Friday at Surge Mobile Physical Therapy in Olmito. Lucille took the time to sign copies of the book and take pictures with guests and children. There was a costumed opossum greeting visitors and entertaining the children and guests were treated to fruit, cheese, and other snacks. The atmosphere was celebratory and cheerful as those in attendance were excited to have a book all about a common sight in the valley, an opossum. The author is looking forward to more book signings in area schools and libraries and confirmed that there could be more books in the future as a series.

The book is recommended for older children and is both entertaining and educational. It has colorful illustrations and plenty of reading comprehension words to help young readers improve their language skills. The glossary of vocabulary terms in the back comes in handy in case there’s a word or two they need to look up. The story is poignant and inspiring and explores the themes of family, culture, and the importance of being true to yourself. Thank you, Lucille, for shining a light on this often misunderstood marsupial. Congratulations – it was a pleasure meeting you.

“Tikito el Tlacuachito del Barrio” aims to make learning fun and engaging for children around the world, introducing them to animals, cultures, and the Spanish language. By combining these elements, Lucille hopes to inspire a sense of discovery and foster curiosity and a love for learning in young readers.

Tiko and his rascally son, Tikito, live in the alleyways of Brownsville, Texas, where they escape the assault and dangers of the outside world. Having lived among humans, Tiko tries to shield his young son against the treachery around them, ultimately sharing the life lessons Tikito will need to survive. (Amazon, 2024)
