Book review: ‘Baby X’ by Kira Peikoff

‘Baby X’ is the new speculative fiction novel by Kira Peikoff. Photo: Amazon

Kira Peikoff has a degree in journalism from New York University and master’s in bioethics from Columbia. She works in biotech communications helping spread the word about transformative developments in the life sciences. Peikoff is a proud member of The Authors Guild, International Thriller Writers, and Mystery Writers of America. She is the author of “Mother Knows Best,” “Living Proof,” “No Time to Die,” and “Die Again Tomorrow.” In her exciting new thriller, “Baby X,” when any biological matter can be used to create life, stolen celebrity DNA sells to the highest bidder–or the craziest stalker. With a vivid imagining of the future, Gattaca meets Black Mirror in Kira Peikoff’s “Baby X.”

“Baby X” – In the near-future United States, where advanced technology can create egg or sperm from any person’s cells, celebrities face the alarming potential of meeting biological children they never conceived. The story begins when famous singer Trace Thorne grows tired of being targeted by the Vault, a black market site devoted to stealing DNA. Sick of paying ransom money for his own cell matter, he hires bio-security guard Ember Ryan to ensure his biological safety.

Ember will do anything she can to protect her clients. She knows all the Vault’s tricks–discarded tissues, used straws, lipstick tubes–and has prevented countless DNA thefts. Working for Thorne, her focus becomes split when she begins to fall for him, but she knows she hasn’t let anything slip–love or not, his DNA is safe. But all bets are off when she and Thorne are confronted by Quinn, a pregnant woman who claims that Thorne is the father of her baby.

The story hooks you in from the first paragraph: “Across the café, Quinn watched the happy couple. They hadn’t noticed her yet. But they would soon.” Set in 2055, technology has advanced to the point where having babies the ‘normal’ way is a concept of the past. Children conceived this way are known as Unforeseens. Couples can now have their DNA collected and use it to create designer babies known as Elites. During the Selection process, embryos with disabilities and inherited diseases are passed on and the Selected go on to become a couple’s new child. This future also includes self driving vehicles and smart eye lenses that are used to answer the phone, email, and to use a computer. All of these technologies are so believable that they become secondary to the thrilling story of the three main characters: Quinn – a surrogate, Lily – an aspiring journalist, and Ember – a bio-security guard. The narration alternates between the three as their stories eventually meet in a final jaw-dropping plot twist.

Due in part to highly descriptive language: “Her trust was eroding like the ground in an earthquake, with aftershocks of panic jostling the foundation that remained,” the story flows smoothly. The well developed and relatable characters draw the reader in and each turn of the page brings one surprising twist after another. The author gives readers a chilling look into the future when biogenetics becomes the norm but is still ethically dubious and affects people’s everyday lives.

Overall, “Baby X” is a brilliant work of speculative fiction that raises concerns about genetic engineering while exploring the universal themes of family, love, power, and corruption. It is a definite must-read and recommended for readers who enjoy medical thrillers the likes of Robin Cook, Michael Palmer, and Blake Crouch.

“He never questioned his own willingness to cross the line. That had been the scariest part……The realization had shaken her faith in reality. It was like learning that the person she loved was an AI with no moral compass whatsoever.”

Gathering knowledge and ideas from his varied life as an Air Force brat, U.S. Marine (Purple Heart recipient in Vietnam), and police officer, he has further broadened his horizons in the past few years as an actor in several productions with the Henry Players in McDonough, Georgia. Educated and reared in England and Georgia, with Marine service in Vietnam, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, he has a truly cosmopolitan view of life. New book release: ‘The Ed Gein Chronicles’ by Scott Bowser

‘The Ed Gein Chronicles’ is the new book by Scott Bowser. Photo: Scott Bowser, used with permission.

Even though I have read my fair share of true crime books, I admit the topic can be unsettling because the events really happened. These books are about real events and people, some of them dealing with serial killers. One of the best known is Ed Gein, who was a murderer, suspected serial killer, and body snatcher who committed the crimes around his hometown in Plainfield, Wisconsin. (Wikipedia) If you like true crime books and want to know more about Ed Gein, consider today’s new book release “The Ed Gein Chronicles” by Scott E Bower. It is available on Amazon and Goodreads.

Scott E. Bowser is the author of three non-fiction books, “Gein,” “The Travelers Guide to Ed Gein,” and “The Ed Gein Chronicles.” Scott was also on MGM Plus tv show “Psycho: The Lost Tapes of Ed Gein.” Born in 1964 in Kingsford, Michigan, he lived his young years in Neenah, Wisconsin. He always had an interest in true crime whether it be reading about it or watching it on tv. Now living in Wisconsin Rapids, he gives Ed Gein tours in his spare time in Plainfield. He keeps on studying about Ed Gein and serves on the Board of Directors for the Waushara County Historical Society & Museum. He is currently writing a screenplay for his first book “Gein.” (Scott E. Bowser, 2023)

“The Ed Gein Chronicles” – Edward Theodore Gein was one of the most notorious murderers in U.S. history. The particularly bizarre and morbid nature of his crimes shocked the world, even though it may never be known if he committed more than two murders. Besides the death of his brother in 1944 under mysterious circumstances, six people disappeared from Wisconsin towns of La Crosse and Plainfield between 1947 and 1957. Gein was conclusively linked to only two, though it is suspected there were more.

Book highlight: ‘The Second Coming of Angela’ by George Thomas S

‘The Second Coming of Angela’ is the exciting thriller by George Thomas S. Photo: George Thomas S, used with permission.

Thrillers are so much fun to read, especially when they feature a storyline that takes place in several locales and contains mystery and suspense. You never know where the action will take you and half the fun is finding out. Such is the case in today’s book highlight by George Thomas S. “The Second Coming of Angela” takes the main character through Sao Paulo, Brasilia, and more in a dangerous rescue mission full of twists and turns. If you enjoy action and suspense novels, consider this one by George Thomas S. It is available on Amazon in English and Spanish formats.

George Thomas S writes poems, song lyrics, and short stories. Every one of them was written free flow. He took a public speaking class in high school, from the same wonderful teacher who taught Rod Serling, creator of The Twilight Zone. In 2005 he started writing “The Second Coming of Angela,” but as it often happens, life got in the way, including a six-year stint in Peru, and it took sixteen years before the editing began and a total of 17 years before it was finally edited and published. The sequel is currently slightly more than half finished and edited. He has also published a very short book of short stories, “Three Odd Tales.” In “The Second Coming of Angela,” Thomas risks his own life to save the life of his ex-wife who he thought was dead. (George Thomas S, 2023)

“The Second Coming of Angela” – When the telephone awakened Thomas at three in the morning, he wasn’t expecting to hear the voice of Angela; someone believed to have died five years earlier. Confused and in shock, he reluctantly agreed to fly to Brazil, where he would discover that he was unexpectedly committed to a dangerous rescue mission encompassing Sao Paulo, Curitiba, Rio, Brasilia, and Manaus, culminating in a gunbattle a thousand miles up the Amazon River. How many, and whose lives would it cost?

Dark thriller THE G to have World Premiere at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival

THE G is a film by Karl R. Hearne. Courtesy photo, used with permission.

In movie news today, THE G, from writer/director Karl R. Hearne and 3Buck Productions, starring Dale Dickey, has been officially selected for the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. In competition, it will celebrate its World Premiere on November 11. It is the story of a mysterious older woman who seeks revenge on the corrupt legal guardian who destroyed her life. levelFILM has acquired all rights for Canadian distribution with a release date scheduled for 2024. (October Coast, 2023)

Director Karl R. Hearne was raised in Ireland and Québec where he studied at McGill before earning a graduate diploma from the University of Nanjing, China. His films have premiered at TIFF, SXSW and New Directors/NewFilms. His arthouse ghost story ‘TOUCHED’ was nominated for Best First Feature at the 2019 Canadian Screen Awards. ‘THE G’ is his second feature.

Ann Hunter (aka “The G”, played by Dale Dickey) and her husband retired to an unnamed American suburb 10 years ago to be near his family. But one day out of the blue they are snatched from their home by a corrupt legal guardian who believes they have hidden wealth. Their home and assets are legally stripped from them and they are put in a prison-like “eldercare facility,” victims of an exploding old age industry. Trapped in a corrupt and terrifying system, THE G begins to show her true mettle as she and her loyal granddaughter fight to get them out and get revenge on the people who did this.

A “winter-noir” based on real events/inspired by the filmmaker’s own family experience, THE G is an original portrait of a fierce older woman in the kind of role that a woman is rarely cast in. A highly atmospheric blend of suspense, dark humor, and moving human relationships that confronts age-related issues head on, THE G is driven by one astonishing main character, rivetingly portrayed by Dale Dickey, “One of Hollywood’s Great Scene-Stealers” (Vanity Fair, Fall 2022).

THE G also stars Romane Denis, Roc Lafortune, Bruce Ramsay, and Jonathan Koensgen. The film is line-produced by José Lacelle, edited by Arthur Tarnowski with music by Philippe Brault and sound design by Pierre-Jules Audet.

Writer/director Karl R. Hearne says, “This film is a “winter-noir” based on real-world elder scams, and inspired by my own grandmother’s story and character. It’s about a woman who- regardless of her age or situation- refuses to accept that her life is over. In a world where the elderly are frequently marginalized, neglected or abused, I think of this film as a revenge story against old age itself… old age being a condition that my grandmother once said she “would not tolerate.”

“At levelFILM, we strive to partner with talented creators and share their stories like this one to ensure they find their Canadian (and beyond!) audiences,” said Olivier Gauthier-Mercier, VP of Distribution at levelFILM. “THE G speaks to an unfortunately all-too-common human experience through incredible performances driven with heart.”

Book review: ‘Runway Dreams: A Fox in the Fold’ by T.K. Ambers

‘Runway Dreams: A Fox in the Fold’ is the new murder mystery novel by T.K. Ambers. Photo: Amazon

T.K. Ambers is the award-winning author of “Runway Dreams: A Pricey Affair.” Her novel has been recognized in four different award competitions and took second place in the Pencraft Awards, Women’s Fiction category. Her eighth-grade English teacher loved her work and pushed her to publish. Though writing has always been her passion, it took nearly eighteen years before she decided to follow her teacher’s guidance. T.K. has a love for nature, travel, photography, concerts, off-roading, and hiking and aside from her novels, she runs a website on travel and life.  She lives in New Richmond, Wisconsin with her husband and two cats: Bellatrix and Kit. In her new novel “Runway Dreams: A Fox in the Fold,” everywhere Bell Price goes, death is stalking and toying with her. (Amazon, 2023)

“Runway Dreams: A Fox in the Fold” – The story begins with a Prologue that takes place overseas as a young lady is taken away to a new life. This is book two in the Runway Dreams series, so the events take place a few days after. Bell Price wants nothing more than peace, quiet, and a drama-free life for her family. With Martin now in custody, she thinks the worst is behind her but life has a few surprises for her. The last thing she suspects when she goes to the local police precinct is that the prior week’s horrors are only the start of what is headed her way. Gunshots ring out in the early hours of the morning and a scream pierces the air. It is now clear that an unknown assailant is stalking her with revenge in mind. Family, friends, and even innocent bystanders get caught in the middle as she is in danger no matter where she goes. She grows increasingly suspicious of everyone around her and finds it hard to trust anyone. Will Bell and her siblings be able to catch the stalker before one of them becomes the next victim? With their parents now gone, they must work together in spite of the increasing danger to finally have the much needed peace they all deserve.

The drama continues in the next installment of the Runway Dreams saga as the family of models is still in danger. Even though Martin is already in jail, someone out there is bound and determined to get revenge in his name. Danger and violence seems to follow the siblings wherever they go and just goes to prove that being rich and privileged does not protect anyone from the dangers of the real world, even with bodyguards and safe houses. The author brilliantly combines the action and suspense of a murder mystery with the glamour of the fashion industry, including fashion shows, parties, and traveling. Her writing style is beautifully descriptive: “A blood-curdling scream ripped through the early morning stillness” and brings the action to life. Thanks in part to it being highly dialogue driven, the story flows easily through the pages and makes this an easy read. Even though the characters can be considered privileged, they are still relatable due to the extensive character development, showing that everyone has drama in their lives and toxic relationships affect everyone, regardless of socioeconomic levels. As far as the murder mystery part is concerned, everyone is a suspect and there are plenty of plot twists to keep readers guessing. The young lady in the Prologue becomes relevant towards the end and perfectly wraps up it all up. Overall, “Runway Dreams: A Fox in the Fold” is a must read mystery novel and is recommended for readers who appreciate mystery, comedy, and psychological suspense fiction.

“The storm may have been outside, but it was raining inside the limo as a waterfall of silent emotion washed away their pain.”
