Echoes of Innovation: The Creative Vision of Cornelius’ Bad Advice/Mind Train EP

Acclaimed Japanese artist Cornelius releases new EP Bad Advice/Mind Train. Courtesy photo, used with permission.

The acclaimed Japanese musician Keigo Oyamada, known as Cornelius, just released the Bad Advice/Mind Train EP, available now via Like LTD. This three-song collection includes the previously released nine minute krautrock inspired opus Mind Train and the new track Bad Advice, featuring the legendary New York No Wave artist Arto Lindsay. (Magnum PR, 2024)

In celebration of his 30th anniversary, Cornelius also announces the forthcoming release of 2023’s acclaimed LP Dream in Dream on vinyl. The deluxe package, available on September 27, includes a Rainbow Foil Jacket with Die-Cut Window, Zoetrope Slipmat, and Colored Vinyl, offering fans a collector’s item that beautifully encapsulates the album’s visionary sound.

The EP’s standout track Bad Advice features vocals from Arto Lindsay (No wave iconoclasts DNA, The Lounge Lizards, The Golden Palominos). Lindsay’s presence on the track exemplifies the seamless blend of his distinctive styles. Cornelius elaborates on the inspiration behind the song: “This song was inspired by the sound of Arto Lindsay’s 80s experimental duo Ambitious Lovers. I was able to create a song like it, so I really wanted Arto to sing on it.”

Known for his passion of crafting lyrics that evoke their own unique mood, Lindsay continues this approach on the lyrics for Bad Advice, allowing for multiple interpretations and letting the words naturally come together.

The EP’s first single released last month, Mind Train is an epic, nine-plus minutes of gorgeously ethereal spacepop, with its sleekly styled minimalist sonic structures breaking into moments of exhilarating chaos. Influenced by the music of his longtime hero and collaborator Yoko Ono, it’s very much meant to inspire inward self-reflection.

The EP also features a remix of Dream In a Dream track Sparks by Canadian multi- instrumentalist, engineer and composer Joseph Shabason. He has played and recorded with bands like Destroyer, The War On Drugs, Andre Ethier, and Alvvays.

Cornelius is also thrilled to announce that Money Mark, known for his work with the Beastie Boys, will join him as support on the U.S. dates of the Dream in Dream World Tour. This tour, which celebrates three decades of Cornelius’s genre-defying music, will feature Cornelius’ 20-year compatriots: Hirohisa Horie on keyboards (also a support member for Yukihiro Takahashi’s Yellow Magic Orchestra), Yuko Araki on drums (also a member of Yoko Ono’s Plastic Ono Band); and Buffalo Daughter’s Yumiko Ohno on Moog and bass. Cornelius and his band will play songs from his five previous albums since 1992, beginning with the landmark LP Fantasma. Cornelius encourages both old fans and new to experience this next wave in sound in person.

The tour kicks off on September 1 at the End of the Road Festival in Salisbury, England, and includes stops in Amsterdam, London, and several U.S. cities, culminating in a headline show at The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles on September 24.

Sip & Savor: Your Guide to San Antonio Tastings

The Briscoe Western Art Museum is hosting Trades of the West. Photo: Briscoe Western Art Museum, used with permission.

Mezcal and whisky aficionados are passionate explorers of their respective spirits, each drawn to the unique qualities and histories of these liquors. Mezcal enthusiasts enjoy the smoky, complex flavors that come from agave plants and traditional production methods in Mexico. They appreciate the spirit’s artisanal craftsmanship and regional variations. Whisky connoisseurs, on the other hand, are captivated by the diverse profiles of whiskies, whether Scotch, bourbon, or rye. They savor the nuances brought out by different cask types, aging processes, and regional influences. Both groups celebrate their spirits with deep knowledge, often engaging in tastings, collecting rare bottles, and discussing intricate details of production.

So if you like mezcal or whisky, or both, there will be two tastings in the San Antonio area that you might want to put on your calendar for Thursday August 22. One is a pop-up at Pullman Market of Gran Maizal, a new Mexican whisky and the other is a Trade Talks – The Art, Culture and Craft of Mezcal at the Briscoe Western Art Museum. (Pullman Market, Briscoe Western Art Museum, 2024)

Details on each:

GRAN MAIZAL, a new Mexican whisky made with ancient corn varieties from the Yucatan Peninsula, is debuting in Texas and offering a tasting opportunity during a pop-up at Pullman Market on Thursday, August 22, from 6p.m. – 8p.m.

Made entirely at Destileria La Vibora in Yucatan, Mexico, the character emanates from thousands of years of Mesoamerican culture proudly passed on from one generation to the next – balanced notes of toasted corn, cured vanilla bean and pure cacao. Practices which are unique to Gran Maizal include the use of the Nal T’eel ancient corn variety, which is considered to be among the oldest. In addition, the whisky rests in handmade terracotta vessels to preserve the nixtamalized maize character while balancing with toasted wood.

Guests are invited to visit The Mezcaleria, centrally located at Pullman Market, for a unique opportunity to sample this distinctive whisky and meet co-founder Gonzalo de la Pezuela. Discover the rich heritage behind the brand while enjoying the exclusive, limited-time cocktail, “Maiz y Caña,” featuring Gran Maizal, Uruapan Charanda Añejo, tamarind, and grapefruit.

Marc Guggenheim’s ‘In Any Lifetime’: A Captivating Journey Through Parallel Lives

‘In Any Lifetime” is Marc Guggenheim’s new novel. Photo: Amazon

One of the reasons I love time travel novels is because they seem so imaginative, especially the concept of parallel universes. They provide an interesting look at human destiny, different realities, and cause and effect. Through these stories, readers are given the opportunity to travel through several eras, questioning the idea that time moves in a linear fashion and revealing the complexities of both the past and the future. Besides the creativity involved, they are also intellectually stimulating because they frequently explore the ramifications of changing past events, the effects of knowing things that will happen in the future, and the complex dance between fate and free will.

I recently got a copy of Marc Guggenheim’s new novel “In Any Lifetime: A Novel” through Amazon First Reads. It’s a combination time travel/romance novel. I’m intrigued by the ‘I’ll find you in any lifetime’ aspect of romance, provided of course, the couple is truly in love and not a stalker situation. I haven’t read it yet, but I wanted to share it as a ‘new book’ feature. Stay tuned for the review.

Marc Guggenheim is an Emmy Award-winning writer and producer of television shows (Arrow, DC’S Legends of Tomorrow, Trollhunters, Carnival Row), movies (Green Lantern, Percy Jackson – Sea Of Monsters), comic books (X-Men Gold, Blade), video games (Call of Duty 3, Singularity, and novels (“Overwatch”). In his new book “In Any Lifetime: A Novel,” A devoted husband defies fate and risks everything to find the one universe where his beloved wife is still alive in this bold and thought-provoking novel. (Amazon, 2024)

“In Any Lifetime: A Novel” – Dr. Jonas Cullen has spent his career as a groundbreaking physicist defying the odds. But on the best night of his life—the night his wife, Amanda, tells him they’re finally having a baby—everything is taken away when a tragic car accident claims the lives of Amanda and their unborn child.

Gutted by pain, Jonas sets out to find a way to bring back Amanda—or rather, find a parallel universe in which she’s still alive. But that’s easier said than done. As Jonas comes to understand all too well, the universe favors certain outcomes…and Amanda’s death is one of them.

Guggenheim’s novel takes readers on a suspenseful journey, intercutting scenes of Jonas’s frantic, present-day search across multiple realities with glimpses from the past of his unfolding romance and eventual marriage. Will Jonas and Amanda reunite in some other world, or will fate succeed in taking her from him forever?

Review:
One of the book’s greatest strengths is its blend of empirical research with heartfelt personal stories. Pillemer’s approach is scholarly and accessible, making the wisdom of seasoned couples relatable and actionable for readers of all ages. The lessons cover a wide range of topics, from the importance of communication and forgiveness to the role of shared experiences in strengthening bonds.

Highlights:
Chapter 2 Lesson Five: Three Danger Signs – Points to dangers signs that could signal that a relationship is in trouble including Violence – Once is More Than Enough; Your Partner Is Controlling; and Your Partner Demeans You.

Chapter 3 Lesson Two: Work-Family Stress: Make Your Home a Safe Haven – emphasizes the importance of making your home a safe place free from the stresses of work and avoiding the dreaded “spillover”: “…elders believe that adopting an attitude that ‘home is home and work is work’ is a critical first step.

Overall, “30 Lessons for Loving” is an optimistic yet realistic perspective on love and acknowledges the complexities and challenges of relationships while providing hopeful strategies for overcoming them. The practical advice, grounded in the experiences of those who have navigated long-term relationships, offers valuable guidance for anyone seeking to deepen their connections with loved ones. It is a thoughtful and enriching read for anyone interested in the enduring art of love.

“It’s true that the experts highlight verbal communication-they want you to keep talking. But in addition to conversations, they suggest that actions can speak as loudly as words.”

Navigating the Universe of ‘Loka’: An Insightful Review of S.B. Divya’s Futuristic Novel

‘Loka’ (The Alloy Era Book 2) is the new hard science fiction novel by S.B. Divya. Photo: Amazon

S.B. Divya is the Hugo- and Nebula-nominated author of “Meru” in the Alloy Era series, “Machinehood,” “Runtime,” and the short-story collection “Contingency Plans for the Apocalypse and Other Possible Situations.” Her stories have been published in various magazines, such as Analog and Uncanny; on Tor.com; and in several anthologies, including Seasons Between Us and Rebuilding Tomorrow. She holds degrees in computational neuroscience and signal processing and she worked for twenty years as an electrical engineer before becoming an author. In her new book is “Loka (The Alloy Era Book 2),” finding a place to belong becomes a girl’s ambitious quest. It is a thrilling epic about space, humanity, and self-discovery. (Amazon, 2024)

“Loka” – Sixteen year old Akshaya is the hybrid daughter of Jayanthi (from the first book “Meru”), a human mother, and Vara, an alloy – a genetically engineered posthuman. She’s the future of life on the planet Meru, but Akshaya has other plans. Before choosing where her future lies, she wants to circumnavigate the most historic orb in the universe—the birthplace of humanity: Earth.

Akshaya’s parents reluctantly agree to her participation in the Anthro Challenge – one with no assistance from alloy devices, transport, or wary alloys themselves who manage humanity and the regions of Earth called Loka. It’s just Akshaya, her equally bold best friend, Somya, and a carefully planned itinerary, traveling continent by continent across a wondrous terrain of things she’s never seen before including blue skies, sunrises, snowcapped mountains, and roiling oceans.

As the adventure unfolds, the travelers discover love and new friendships, but they also learn the risks of a planet that’s not entirely welcoming. On this journey—exciting, dangerous, and life-changing—Akshaya will discover what human existence really means.

Review:

“Loka” continues the thrilling saga with an imaginative blend of futuristic technology and humanity’s ever present sense of belonging and identity. The story begins with Akshaya and her friends aboard Chedi, a conscious megaconstruct with a cylindrical body traveling through space. It is the only home she has ever known so she is naturally curious about what else is out there. Divya world-building is amazing, as she creates a rich, immersive environment that blends futuristic technology with traditional concepts like family, friends, and relationships, offering a fresh perspective on the genre. The vivid descriptions and innovative technologies bring the story to life, immersing readers in a vividly constructed universe: “…the chromatophores made me a hybrid – altered enough not to be entirely human, but not so different as to count as an alloy.”

The extensive character development makes the characters relevant. Akshaya’s internal conflicts and growth are portrayed with depth and empathy, making her journey both engaging and relatable. Everything she is experiencing along the way is new to her, so her reactions are emotional: “I listened to the sound of raindrops outside, the wind spattering them in bursts every few minutes. A rainstorm!” The plot unfolds with a series of unexpected twists and turns, maintaining a brisk pace while exploring thought-provoking themes about humanity’s relationship with technology and nature. The secondary characters also receive significant attention, enriching the narrative and adding layers to the central plot. The narration is in the first person point of view through Akshaya’s eyes and the language is easy to understand.

Overall, “Loka” is a thought-provoking and imaginative read that will appeal to fans of speculative fiction and those interested in the intersection of technology and humanity. With its steady pacing and unexpected twists, it offers a compelling continuation of the series. It’s a must-read for fans of speculative fiction who appreciate a fusion of high-tech and traditional elements, delivering both excitement and thoughtful exploration of its themes: identity, friendship, and perseverance.

“I ached in a hundred places, but I was too exhausted to care. We had crossed the Euphrates, I had survived hours of being alone, and we were together again. In that moment, nothing else mattered.”

Venture where nature’s beauty and resilience take center stage during the Briscoe’s summer exhibition, Survival of the Fittest: Envisioning Wildlife and Wilderness with the Big Four, Masterworks from the Rijksmuseum Twenthe and the National Museum of Wildlife Art.

The exhibition’s title references Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, which had a revolutionary impact on how people from Western cultures envisioned our relationship with the other animals on Earth. In the post-Darwin era, a group of classically trained painters now known as the “Big Four” emerged and helped establish a vision of wildlife and nature that remains with us today. German Richard Friese (1854–1918) is the Big Four’s elder, followed chronologically by Swede Bruno Liljefors (1860–1939), German Wilhelm Kuhnert (1865–1926), and German-American Carl Rungius (1869–1959).

Trousdale’s ‘Out Of My Mind’: A Journey Through Emotions and Innovation

Trousdale’s Out Of My Mind expands on their original debut album. Photo: Caity Krone, used with permission.

Guided by their unbreakable friendship and three-part harmonies, LA folk-pop band Trousdale recently released Out Of My Mind Deluxe. Vastly expanding their debut offering, the deluxe includes live renditions of their tracks recorded at LA’s legendary El Rey Theatre, features from Ben Abraham and BAILEN, and covers of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain” and One Direction’s “Night Changes” recorded for Sirius XM. (Trousdale, 2024)

The trio, built up by Quinn D’Andrea, Georgia Greene, and Lauren Jones, shaped the tracks from the original version of Out of My Mind over the course of two years, spread between sessions in Nashville, sessions at singer-songwriter Jon Bellion’s house in Long Island, and time bouncing between the three members’ homes. Making sure they maintained their hand in the recording and production process, the group opted for home studios, returning to the comfort and intimacy of the process that they’d honed at school in California.

“The real Trousdale sound got its legs when the three of us became heavily involved in the production of our music,” shares Lauren Jones. “The expectations and standards for women are always higher than those of men, and the world of music production is no different. Young girls that show an aptitude for music are more often pushed to be performers than men, which is another reason why there are way more women artists that also produce than there are women producers. Male collaborators get more credit than they’re worth, and then they get hired and rehired to do more projects that gain them more credibility in the field and more money.”

Quinn D’Andrea adds that their opportunity to connect with young women is a particular point of pride. “More than anything I love going on the road and seeing young women connecting to the power of music and telling your story on your own terms,” she says. “Our friendship and acceptance of each other holds us together, and I think that brings our fans together as well.” A wheel that keeps on turning, the music fuels the friendship, and the friendship fuels the music. Since formation, Trousdale has amassed over 75 million streams worldwide.

The album arrives with a live video of Trousdale’s cover of “The Chain.” A few weeks back, the trio also released a video for fan-favorite “Point Your Finger,” where they can be seen raising hell in a billiards bar.

In a continuation of the mission to bring awareness and solutions to homelessness in America, Robert Craig Films is announcing the upcoming release of the novel “No Address” published by Forefront Books with sales and distribution by Simon & Schuster. This is part of “The Big 5” movement to bring empathy and awareness to the stories of homelessness born from the Robert Craig Films – produced, award-winning No Address movie. The novel is now available for pre-order. (Anderson PR, 2024)

“In the pages of ‘No Address,’ the reader embarks on a literary journey that follows the story of individuals and families experiencing homelessness. The plight of the unhoused is something we all see on a daily basis and we are humbled to present this book, knowing it will leave an everlasting mark on hearts and minds alike.” – Jonathan Merkh, President of Forefront Books

The novel “No Address” is written by 15-time New York Times Best Selling Author Ken Abraham. Based on the critically acclaimed dramatic film and inspired by true events, “No Address” shows how homelessness could happen to anyone. It will be available on September 10, 2024 through Forefront Books and available for pre-order.

“I look for stories that have the potential to transform the fabric of our society, and ‘No Address’ rises to the top in that category,” shares Ken Abraham. “To help someone who has no way of repaying you is one of the greatest joys in life and I believe ‘No Address’ can inspire that sort of response in millions of people.”

“No Address” is a gripping tale about a group of individuals who find themselves homeless due to unfortunate circumstances. It provides a realistic portrayal of their fight for survival against the gangs, vigilantes, and an uncompassionate community. It features celebrity cast members, including William Baldwin, Xander Berkeley, Beverly D’Angelo, Ashanti, Lucas Jade Zumann, Isabella Ferreira, Patricia Velasquez, and Ty Pennington. To take homelessness head-on and do more, “The Big 5” includes the “No Address” movie, novel, documentary, an interactive study guide, and an upcoming music album.

Robert Craig Films is a film company located in Placer County, California, with a mission to develop, create and produce high-quality, entertaining movies that inspire the audience to engage with greater empathy, compassion, and generosity in their communities.
