Mezcal and whisky aficionados are passionate explorers of their respective spirits, each drawn to the unique qualities and histories of these liquors. Mezcal enthusiasts enjoy the smoky, complex flavors that come from agave plants and traditional production methods in Mexico. They appreciate the spirit’s artisanal craftsmanship and regional variations. Whisky connoisseurs, on the other hand, are captivated by the diverse profiles of whiskies, whether Scotch, bourbon, or rye. They savor the nuances brought out by different cask types, aging processes, and regional influences. Both groups celebrate their spirits with deep knowledge, often engaging in tastings, collecting rare bottles, and discussing intricate details of production.
So if you like mezcal or whisky, or both, there will be two tastings in the San Antonio area that you might want to put on your calendar for Thursday August 22. One is a pop-up at Pullman Market of Gran Maizal, a new Mexican whisky and the other is a Trade Talks – The Art, Culture and Craft of Mezcal at the Briscoe Western Art Museum. (Pullman Market, Briscoe Western Art Museum, 2024)
Details on each:
GRAN MAIZAL, a new Mexican whisky made with ancient corn varieties from the Yucatan Peninsula, is debuting in Texas and offering a tasting opportunity during a pop-up at Pullman Market on Thursday, August 22, from 6p.m. – 8p.m.
Made entirely at Destileria La Vibora in Yucatan, Mexico, the character emanates from thousands of years of Mesoamerican culture proudly passed on from one generation to the next – balanced notes of toasted corn, cured vanilla bean and pure cacao. Practices which are unique to Gran Maizal include the use of the Nal T’eel ancient corn variety, which is considered to be among the oldest. In addition, the whisky rests in handmade terracotta vessels to preserve the nixtamalized maize character while balancing with toasted wood.
Guests are invited to visit The Mezcaleria, centrally located at Pullman Market, for a unique opportunity to sample this distinctive whisky and meet co-founder Gonzalo de la Pezuela. Discover the rich heritage behind the brand while enjoying the exclusive, limited-time cocktail, “Maiz y Caña,” featuring Gran Maizal, Uruapan Charanda Añejo, tamarind, and grapefruit.

Twang’s homage to National Watermelon Day. Photo: Giant Noise Partners, used with permission.
With this intense summer heat, there’s no better excuse to dive into fresh fruit and delicious libation than National Watermelon Day. Saturday, August 3, is a day dedicated to the summer-centered, hydrating life-saver that is watermelon. Enthusiasts can celebrate in a variety of ways, be it through a refreshing drink, a themed party, or taking advantage of the perfectly ripe fruit through seasonings like salt and chili. No matter how you celebrate, it’s clear that watermelon is a staple of the season. (Twang, 2024)
A major player in online snacking trends all over the country is Twang. Embodying the principles of Hispanic-American nostalgia in the form of premium-flavored salts, sugars, and seasonings, Twang is best known for its bold Mexican flair in every shaker. The best part about Twang is that its iconic flavors can be carried around with you at any time, whether that be in the palm of your hand, the pocket of your jeans, or the bottom of your purse, Twang makes every moment more exciting.
In honor of National Watermelon Day, Twang wants to share an innovative cocktail made by one of the frontrunners of San Antonio’s mixology world: Aaron Peña. Owner of Amor Eterno, a vibrant and intimate cocktail lounge known for its imaginative flavors and classic bartending, this Grilled Watermelon Margarita featuring Twang embodies true summer-lovin’.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup fresh grilled Watermelon
1 ounce fresh squeezed Lime Juice
¾ ounce Agave syrup – adjust to your taste
2 ounces of Madam Paleta’s Premium Pineapple Tequila
Twang has seen tremendous growth since its founding in 1986. The brand currently has four product categories in its portfolio and a thriving food service division. Until now, the product lines had their own branding and were previously referred to as Beer Salt, Twangerz, Twang-A-Rita, and Reserve Michelada Mixes. In an effort to streamline the branding as the company continues to expand, all products will live under the Twang banner – shifting from a “House of Brands” to a “Branded House.”
Beer Salt is now Twang Beer Salt, Twang-A-Rita is now Twang Drink Rimmers, Twangerz is now Twang Snack Salts and Reserve Michelada is now Twang Michelada Mixer. Twang’s products are still retaining their great flavors and the brand is even adding new ones, they simply will all be united under the Twang name. In addition to its new monikers, the brand’s packaging has been redesigned to represent the brand’s Latino heritage and its fun and playful culture. Twang’s Snack Salt shakers are now decorated with ‘papel picado,’ the traditional Mexican craft of cutting intricate designs out of colorful paper, typically used for celebratory decor. In addition to Twang’s Drink Rimmers moving from a bag to a tub container, the lids are decorated with icons unique to each flavor profile. Each Twang Beer Salt depicts a scene being played out on the bottle, and each Michelada Mixer features clear and bold packaging that reflects the flavors inside.
“This brand refresh has been a labor of love for the Twang team. We are excited to bring everything together in a cohesive, but fun way that really highlights who we are as a company.” – Twang CEO Elysia Treviño-Gonzales
As part of the brand’s refresh, Twang is unveiling three new flavors amongst its existing product categories: Chile Lime Beer Salt, Tangy Tamarind Snack Salt, and Classic Chamoy Snack Salt. Twang’s Chile Lime Beer Salt offers a zesty punch of lime and chiles that pair perfectly with beer, hard seltzers, canned cocktails and sodas. Twang’s Tangy Tamarind Snack Salt combines the fruit flavor with spicy chile and tangy lime, while the Classic Chamoy Snack Salt is Twang’s granular take on the beloved condiment that merges the flavors of pickled fruit, chiles and lime. Both new Snack Salt flavors transform everyday snacks like fruit, veggies, and candy into extraordinary treats.
The new Twang branding and products are rolling out in stores now and will be widely available in the coming months.

Friends Charles Attal and Eduardo Margain made their vision for an additive free tequila a reality when they released Aguasol earlier this year. Photo: Aguasol, used with permission.
Fully mature agave, natural spring water, and the Jalisco, Mexico sunshine are the only three things inside Aguasol’s distinctive, ridged bottle. Named for its simplicity, Aguasol was born backstage at a live music festival, through a bolt of inspiration from the brains of Charles Attal (co-founder of C3 Presents) and Eduardo “Eddie” Margain (co-founder of Austin FC). (Aguasol, 2023)
The two friends were enjoying the final weekend of Austin City Limits Music Festival 2017 when they found themselves feeling sluggish and slow after a weekend of celebrating. Between sets, Attal and Margain discussed their shared desire for a clean tequila, one without any sweeteners, glycerin, artificial flavors or colorings — only the essentials. They forged a pact to make a fine tequila made honestly, transparently, and traditionally from the best agave available.
Aguasoloffers two additive free expressions — blanco and reposado. The reposado is produced using the same traditional process as the blanco, then aged in American bourbon barrels for three months. The tequila presents subtle hints of cooked agave with mild pepper and soft oak.
Aguasol is currently available throughout Texas in over 850 retail stores and 900 bars and restaurants.
“We started selling it quietly earlier this year and the reception has been incredible. We sold over 5,500 cases in four months, and we’re on track to move 10,000 cases in eight months, all with zero marketing. – Charles Attal
Attal and Margain kicked things off by sharing their new tequila with the city they call home at Austin City Limits Festival 2023 in October, where it was served up throughout the park over the two festival weekends.
Proceeds are donated to the Careyes Foundation in Jalisco, which catalyzes innovative programs in education, environment, wellness, and the arts to improve the well-being of 12 rural communities along the South Pacific coast of Mexico.

Founder and CEO Bill Gillies started Big Country Foods Inc. as a supplier of organic ingredients over nine years ago. Gillies wanted to further his vision of bringing more clean ingredients to the market by providing consumers an organic hard seltzer, different from the rest. As a consumer, Gillies had always been selective about the ingredients in his food and drink. This personal concern led him to take what he calls “the path of most-resistance” when sourcing only the cleanest ingredients for Big Country®.
Big Country’s quality ingredients stand out in the highly competitive hard seltzer category. Its flavors are crafted by nationally acclaimed mixologist, Ricky Cobia. In addition to their unique flavor profiles, Big Country takes pride in their proprietary brewing process they like to call the “Cane to Can” approach. This allows Big Country to control the entire brewing process, ensuring transparency and quality in every batch.
Big Country® Organic Hard Seltzer is distributed statewide in Texas through Ben E. Keith Beverages. The new variety 12-packs are currently available on shelves in major Texas retailers including Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe’s, Sprouts Farmers Market, HEB and Total Wine & More.
Big Country is perfect for today’s health-conscious consumer, with each can only containing 90 calories, 0g sugar, 1g carb, and 4.5% ABV. In addition, by purchasing Big Country® Hard Seltzer, consumers are giving back through the Fair Trade USA® program, which supports safe working conditions for farmers, protects the environment, builds sustainable livelihoods, and allows farmers to earn additional money to empower and uplift their communities. Since inception, Big Country Fair Trade purchases have sent over $91,000 to the farmers.
Big Country® Organic Hard Seltzer is the only Fair Trade Certified™ libation of its kind in the US. Their Fair Trade commitment means every can puts fair wages directly into the hands that harvested its ingredients. It also ensures farmers work in safe conditions, protect the environment, build sustainable livelihoods, and earn additional money to empower and uplift their communities.
Since 2013, Big Country has worked with partners in Paraguay to import ingredients including a variety of organic sugars. Now, their seltzers are brewed in Austin, Texas with organic alcohol from fermented Big Country Cane Sugar.
In 2020, Big Country® Foods Inc. welcomed Big Country® Beverages (@bigcountrybeverage) to their organic family of products. BCHS is thoughtfully crafted by their skilled brew master and artisan mixologist, who have used their combined 25 years of experience to create the most delicious and unique flavors on the market.

Two PR executives turned co-founders create canned cocktail brand with built-in grant program that supports women entrepreneurs. Photo: Chase Hall, used with permission.
Despite the explosion of canned cocktail offerings in recent years, Nicole Craven and Alexis Smith found themselves waiting for their favorite libation — the espresso martini — to appear in a convenient, ready-to-drink format. After months of waiting, hoping someone else might bring their vision to life, the two publicists quit their agency jobs to pursue a profit-promising gap in an already booming market, and Après Hours was born. (Après Hours, 2022)
Après Hours is a new line of ready-to-drink, canned espresso martinis designed for a gluten-free, dairy-free lifestyle. The brand officially launched in Dallas on August 1 is now available in select liquor stores throughout the city and online with nationwide shipping to 39 states.
“We’ve always preferred our espresso martinis with tequila instead of vodka, which is where we got the idea to use agave-wine as our base,” says co-founder Nicole Craven. “It gives the entire cocktail a smoother, rounder flavor and allows us to be sold in grocery stores as well as liquor stores.”
Après Hours is available in three gluten-free and dairy-free flavors — Salted Caramel, Classic, and Vanilla. Each 12-ounce can is 10% alc/vol and contains 40 mg of Colombian caffeine, slightly less than a standard shot of espresso.
However, building a business was not as easy as balancing a beverage. Craven and Smith ran into multiple roadblocks along the way, especially with funding. These initial difficulties made the sudden success and warm reception of Après Hours by Dallas shoppers even sweeter. Their first run sold out the day it hit store shelves. According to a recent study by BevAlc Insights, less than 2% of companies with an RTD offering are owned by women. Hence Après Hours’ tagline, “It’s time to shake things up.”
“We wanted to honor the tradition and craft of bartending while communicating a greater message to aspiring female entrepreneurs,” says Craven. “We’re so proud of the work we’ve done to build this brand and we hope to inspire other women and girls to do the same. That’s why we’ve established our “Après Hours Grant Program” to help fund female-founded start up businesses.
The goal of the program is to streamline the fundraising process for women and girls to create businesses of their own. Applications will be accepted via the Après Hours website beginning in September 2022.
Après Hours is currently available in bars, restaurants and liquor stores across the Dallas area, including POGOs, Dallas Fine Wine and Spirits, Roots Market, Uptown Liquor, Monticello Liquor, Cafe Duro, Castle Spirits, Lucky’s Liquor, Buddy’s Booze, Jerry’s Liquor and Biagio Wine and Spirits. Retail prices range from $13.99 per 4-pack to $55 per 12-pack.
Founded by two female marketers turned entrepreneurs, Après Hours is a Dallas-based spirits and lifestyle brand born from Nicole Craven and Alexis Smith’s obsession with espresso martinis and a lack of the classic caffeine-infused cocktail in the ready-to-drink spirits industry. As female community leaders who are always on the go, Smith and Craven developed a sophisticated yet convenient canned espresso martini cocktail that combines daytime fuel with a wind-down buzz, perfect for any after hour activity. Providing the pick-me-up needed to take on the day or night, Après Hours is available in three dairy-and-gluten free flavors: Classic, Salted Caramel and Vanilla. Après Hours and its social club seek to create a culture that empowers change, encourages women to break boundaries and levels the male-dominated playing field to change the dynamics of drinking overall.
