Grammy-nominated Buika to perform at Pearl

To celebrate San Antonio’s Tricentennial and its Spanish heritage, Pearl developed Olé, San Antonio: When San Antonio Meets Spain. This summer-long celebration runs until Sunday September 16 to commemorate the city’s 300th anniversary and includes events and activities related to four main pillars: gastronomy, music and dance, arts and architecture. As a part of Olé, Grammy-nominated artist from Spain Concha Buika will perform a special concert at Pearl Park on Friday August 4 from 7p.m. to 10p.m. Known commonly by her stage name, Buika, the Spanish singer was voted one of “50 Great Voices” by NPR and nominated for the Latin Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Concha Buika will take over Pearl Park with a stunning performance that draws inspiration from flamenco, jazz and R&B. San Antonio favorite, Las Coronelas, the all-female mariachi group will open the show. The performance is free and open to the public. Parking information available online.

Gloria Gaynor, the Queen of Disco, will be making her San Antonio debut as she headlines the opening concert for The Luxury Weekend at La Cantera Resort & Spa. Set for Friday September 15 at 8:30p.m. the Resort’s grand ballroom will be transformed into a Disco time machine. Tickets are $169 per person or $300 per couple and are available online. The price includes cocktail upon arrival, bottle of champagne for the purchase of one $300 ticket, fashions by Neiman Marcus, art display/sale by AnArte Gallery and light bites from Resort Chefs and visiting Chefs from Mexico – Alberto Senties, Susana Palazuelos and Eduardo W Palazuelos. This Wednesday August 23, Hotel Emma will kick off its new Latin Jazz Wednesdays music series at Sternewirth with local music icon Henry Brun. Every Wednesday from 8p.m. to midnight, guests will be able to enjoy lively Latin Jazz music from the multiple Grammy Award-winning artist. Sternewirth will be serving its full cocktail menu featuring favorites such as Three Emmas, La Babia Margarita and more as well as its updated food menu until 11:30p.m. (Hotel Emma, 2017)

Conga dynamo Henry Brun, nicknamed “Mr. Ritmo” by his fans, began playing congas at age seven and by the time he was eleven he was playing professionally. While listening to and being influenced by Latin music pioneers such as Tito Puente, Patato, Buyú, Mongo and Candido, Henry developed his own unique style and technique on bongos and timbales.

Hotel Emma is in the former Pearl Brewery which was built in 1894 and is named in honor of Emma Koehler, the wife of Pearl Brewery founder Otto Koehler. She kept the brewery going during prohibition after her husband passed away and saw it through its most successful years. The hotel was designed by award-winning firm Roman and Williams who are known for mixing historic and modern elements. They had the historic Pearl building as a starting point and created a beautiful structure that blends the old with the new, the industrial with the refined.

Tickets now on sale for Mala Luna Music Festival

Tickets are now on sale for the second annual Mala Luna Music Festival to be held on Halloween weekend October 28 and 29 at the Nelson Wolff Stadium, west of downtown San Antonio.  Due to a sold-out event last year, the festival has moved to a new location and is expanding to two stages. It will feature high-profile musical performances, multiple live art installations and numerous local food vendors and merchandise. The Halloween theme, designs and costumes will help pay tribute to the local culture and the community’s annual Diá de los Muertos celebrations. (Mala Luna Music Festival, 2017)

General admission tickets, $149 and VIP passes, $399 are on sale online as well as other VIP Packages including Black Moon for $189, Harvest Moon for $209, and Fly Me to the Moon for $399, which offers ticket-buyers the most enhanced experience at the festival. Attendees are encouraged to act fast as these VIP tickets are in short supply and will continue to increase in price as the event date approaches. VIP perks include preferred viewing areas, expedited entry, dedicated bars and restroom facilities, festival merchandise and more.

This year’s musical lineup includes Future, Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Migos, Afrojack, Carnage, Khalid, Borgore, Playboi Carti, Kali Uchis, Ugly God, Smokepurpp, Trae Tha Truth, J.I.D, and Maxo Kream. One of Mala Luna’s missions is to support San Antonio’s up-and-coming music scene and several San Antonio-based artists are also scheduled to perform, including Xavier Omär, Intre, Bamsworth Belli, Izaq Roland and Lil Yodaa, as well as Rayne and Isabella Rodriguez of Network for Young Artists.

Through its continuing partnership with Network for Young Artists (NYA), the Mala Luna Music Festival will donate a portion of the proceeds from each ticket sold to the San Antonio-based organization. NYA is a nonprofit organization that provides affordable classes in voice, guitar, percussion, keyboard and dance to San Antonio-area youth ages 4-20. Last year’s festival donations supported student-driven music education initiatives through the end of 2016 and into 2017.

Rooftop Jazz Concert Series at Artpace

Artpace is a contemporary art space located in downtown San Antonio created to support artists with residences, exhibitions and educational programs to foster the creative process. In a combined effort with local jazz station KRTU Jazz 91.7, Artpace is bringing back their Members Only Rooftop Jazz Concert Series. This series aims to bring together members of Artpace and KRTU to celebrate art and jazz. These concerts highlight a jazz theme celebrating historical figures and styles performed by local and regional artists. Guests can mingle while enjoying a night of jazz, drinks and small bites. The outdoor concert series returns on Friday June 16 from 8p.m. to 11p.m. with the 2017 Rooftop Jazz Season Announcement Party and will feature a performance by the Doc Watkins Trio. Doc Watkins is a locally based pianist, organist and band leader who now heads up his own music venue, Jazz, TX. The venue focuses on jazz, blues, big band, Texas swing, salsa, conjunto and Americana.  Beer will be provided by Alamo Beer and cocktails by Austin Cocktails. A digital projectionist will provide a visual element featuring relevant jazz imagery during the second, third and fourth concerts. Other concerts in the series will include: Aaron Prado: A Tribute to Herbie Hancock on July 21, Ephraim Owens Quartet on August 18 and Dr. Zog on September 29. These events are open and free to KRTU and Artpace members only.  Various levels of memberships are available starting at $50.  More information on memberships is available online.

Since it opened in 1995 Artpace has housed more than 200 artists through the International Artist-in-Residence program. Every year they host three residencies that include a Texas-based artist, one national artist and one international artist who are each chosen by a guest curator. After an eight-week residency, the artists will have their exhibits on site for two months. The purpose of these residencies is to give artists every opportunity to grow by giving them the resources they need.

The series of popular sunset adult pool parties is back this summer at La Cantera Resort & Spa beginning on June 1 and running through August 10 from 7p.m. to 11p.m. Evenings on the Edge at Topaz are Thursday night events that benefit local charities and feature live entertainment. Guests must be 21 and over and ID is required. (La Cantera Resort & Spa, 2017)

Tickets are $25 and available online and if purchased in advance it includes valet parking. Valet parking at the door is $10. Ticket includes a summer-inspired cocktail, live performances and/or DJ, pop up min spa sessions and Moet Chandon toast at sundown. In the event of inclement weather, ticket will be honored at a future event based on availability; tickets are non-refundable. Ten private cabañas also are available for rent and require 24-hour cancellation. A portion of ticket sales and cabaña rentals benefit local charities. A Topaz Sunset Pass is available for $450 and includes, among other benefits, two tickets to each event, two-day spa passes, valet parking and a welcome cocktail. This month, Jazz, TX is hosting two CD release parties. The first is for Ed Sherry’s “New Orleans Party” on Wednesday May 17 from 8:30p.m. to 11:30p.m. and the second is for Adrian Ruiz’ “Premiere” on Tuesday May 23 also from 8:30p.m. to 11:30p.m. Tickets for both are $10 per person and are available online. Ed Sherry and his all-star band make the Alamo City debut of his first CD release as a band leader with “New Orleans Party.” This recording is a musical journey from the roots of traditional jazz to today’s street beats of the French Quarter and features some of San Antonio’s finest musicians. It includes fourteen New Orleans classic tunes as Ed sings and plays the trumpet in fine form.

Adrian Ruiz and his Quintet will perform in celebration of the release of “Premiere.” This recording contains original compositions written by each band member. Ruiz is the Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combos director for University of Texas San Antonio and a freelance trumpeter performing throughout Texas.

Jazz, TX is the Pearl’s newest upscale music venue owned and operated by renowned musician Brent “Doc” Watkins. It is in the cellar of the Bottling House and hosts musical acts ranging from jazz to blues, big band, Texas swing, salsa, conjunto and Americana including Doc Watkins. Business hours are Tuesday through Saturday and aside from music, guests can enjoy a wider variety of food, beverages, wine and spirits.

On Tuesday May 16 Jazz, TX will continue its Chef Series event with Guest Chef Danny Orta and a Japanese inspired menu. This event is limited to 30 guests and tickets are available online for $125 per person. Ticket includes a pre-fixe menu for two including gratuity, tax, cocktails and a cover fee if guests wish to stay and enjoy the 8:30p.m. show of The Doc Watkins Quartet featuring Jonathan Card.  Dinner will be from 6p.m. to 8p.m. and the show will be from 8:30p.m. to 11:30p.m. The menu will consist of five specialty courses including oysters, potato salad, lump crab meat, dry braised beef rib, seared scallop and milk honey with dry ice and caramel honeycomb for dessert.  Paired with the food will be Japanese spirits including Shōchū, Sake and Japanese Whiskey from the bar. Spring Jazz at The Falls is back at The Shops at La Cantera this April. This is a series of free outdoor concerts at The Falls whose goal is to showcase and foster an appreciation for all forms of jazz through free, quality live musical performances. These concerts will be on Wednesdays from 7:30p.m. to 9:30p.m. on April 5, April 12 and April 19. They are free and open to the public but no outside coolers or pets allowed. Guests may bring their own blankets and chairs. Chair placement begins one hour prior to show time. This year’s performers include San Antonio’s own Wednesday Ball and Roger Tamez as The Show, Latin Grammy nominated composer and guitarist Sergio Lara and acoustic jazz guitarist Peter White. Wednesday April 5 – Wednesday Ball and Roger Tamez as The Show. This duo is the ultimate dance, soul and R&B band and features vocalist Wednesday Ball, a local MacArthur High School graduate, and the talented Roger Tamez, another San Antonian and multi-instrumentalist. Their influences include Jill Scott, Mary J Blige, Stevie Wonder and others.

Wednesday April 12 – Musical artist and composer Sergio Lara. He is a renowned guitarist and composer who was nominated for a 2001 Latin Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Album. He has contributed to more than a dozen CD compilations with musicians like Dave Brubeck, Pat Matheny and Ottmar Liebert.

Wednesday April 19 – Acoustic guitarist Peter White. As a versatile and prolific multi-instrumentalist, the British native’s career has consisted of folk rock and keyboardist for and co-writer with Al Stewart. He released his first solo album in 1990.
