Pearl announces programming for Hispanic Heritage Month celebration

Pearl is excited to announce its programming for Hispanic Heritage Month, this September 15 – October 15, starting with a big Viva Dieciséis at Pearl celebration and continuing throughout the month with events, specials, a mural designed by artist Martha Martinez, and more throughout the property. Viva Dieciséis at Pearl – Friday, September 16

To celebrate Mexican Independence Day, Pearl will host a free event featuring a variety of mariachi groups that will play throughout the property including Trio Canteres de Mi Tierra, Las Coronelas and Mariachi Azteca with a guest appearance from Mateo Lopez, the world’s youngest Mariachi. The Viva Dieciséis festivities will also include a traditional grito by Consul General of Mexico in San Antonio Ruben Minutti Zanatta as well as loteria games and a grito contest in partnership with the Mexican Consulate and H-E-B.

The full event schedule is as follows:

  • 5p.m. – Mariachi Festival kicks off at the shade structure (in front of Southerleigh)
  • 5p.m. – Burbank High School mariachi group to perform at Parkito (next to Local Coffee)
  • 5:30p.m. – Loteria games and guitar painting by the Mexican Consulate
  • 6p.m. – Harris Middle School mariachi group to perform at Parkito
  • 6p.m. – Stilt walkers from Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center perform
  • 6:45p.m. – Grito by Consul General of Mexico and Grito contest takes place under the shade structure
  • 6:45p.m. – Las Coronelas to perform at the shade structure
  • 7p.m. – Trio Canteres de Mi Tierra to perform throughout the grounds
  • 7p.m. – Mariachi Azteca to perform under the shade structure with guest Mateo Lopez

The mural, created by Martha Martinez of MM Creative, in collaboration with Servin and Don Mos, celebrates the San Antonio community’s rich cultural history. “Cultura, Orgullo and Corazón – are words that describe San Antonio, its people and its spirit. As a majority Latino community, we celebrate our community all year round,” says Martinez.

Retail Specials

Throughout Pearl during Hispanic Heritage Month, visitors and shoppers can find special deals, displays, pop-ups and more that honor our Hispanic community. Dos Carolinas, known for its beautiful guayabera shirts, will host a 15-20% off sale from September 15 through September 24. Curio and Larder at Hotel Emma will feature Latinx makers at their store with Larder hosting a 17HERNÁN mole event on September 17. Hotel Emma will also host a series of tastings featuring Latinx goods for guests of the hotel.

Feliz Modern Pop is planning to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with displays featuring Latinx makers and brands. The featured artists at Feliz Modern Pop will include designer Mario Diaz, jewelry maker Natazia Renee, artist Natalie Trinidad, artist Rafael Gonzales Jr, and artist Eva Sanchez. Brands like Very That, Miradela and Mi Dulce Vida will also be featured at the store throughout Hispanic Heritage Month.

Rancho Diaz will also celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with displays throughout the store that introduce shoppers to the people behind the brands they carry. Throughout the month they will feature artist Hailey Marmolejo and brands like Del Alma Imports, and Tex Mex Dance Party.

Culinary Celebrations

Restaurants across Pearl will be celebrating with specialty cocktails, unique new dishes, music, and more. Jazz, TX will host a Salsa night with Jose Amador and NATIAO Latin Jazz on September 17 at 7:30p.m. Boiler House will debut a new mezcal margarita with jalapeño and cilantro called “The San Antonian” in celebration of the city’s vibrant blend of cultures. Chilaquil in the Bottling Department is bringing mole chilaquiles to the menu for Dieciséis and will offer free aguas frescas with purchase throughout the month. 

La Gloria will be offering several new specials as part of their Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations: 

  • Chiles en Nogada – traditional poblano chile stuffed with picadillo meat with fruit, topped with walnut-based cream sauce, pomegranate seeds, and parsley
  • Bandera Elote – shaved in a cup or cob, topped with chili powder, cotija cheese, and cilantro to resemble the Mexican flag
  • Bandera Margarita – frozen margarita with pickle chamoy at the bottom and strawberry at the top, garnished with salt or chili, a lime and a Mexican flag toothpick

As part of their Dieciséis celebration on September 16, La Gloria will feature the aforementioned menu items in addition to live entertainment all evening, a cantarito satellite bar and a Herradura tequila flight special.

 

Rooftop Jazz Concert Series at Artpace

Artpace is a contemporary art space located in downtown San Antonio created to support artists with residences, exhibitions and educational programs to foster the creative process. In a combined effort with local jazz station KRTU Jazz 91.7, Artpace is bringing back their Members Only Rooftop Jazz Concert Series. This series aims to bring together members of Artpace and KRTU to celebrate art and jazz. These concerts highlight a jazz theme celebrating historical figures and styles performed by local and regional artists. Guests can mingle while enjoying a night of jazz, drinks and small bites. The outdoor concert series returns on Friday June 16 from 8p.m. to 11p.m. with the 2017 Rooftop Jazz Season Announcement Party and will feature a performance by the Doc Watkins Trio. Doc Watkins is a locally based pianist, organist and band leader who now heads up his own music venue, Jazz, TX. The venue focuses on jazz, blues, big band, Texas swing, salsa, conjunto and Americana.  Beer will be provided by Alamo Beer and cocktails by Austin Cocktails. A digital projectionist will provide a visual element featuring relevant jazz imagery during the second, third and fourth concerts. Other concerts in the series will include: Aaron Prado: A Tribute to Herbie Hancock on July 21, Ephraim Owens Quartet on August 18 and Dr. Zog on September 29. These events are open and free to KRTU and Artpace members only.  Various levels of memberships are available starting at $50.  More information on memberships is available online.

Since it opened in 1995 Artpace has housed more than 200 artists through the International Artist-in-Residence program. Every year they host three residencies that include a Texas-based artist, one national artist and one international artist who are each chosen by a guest curator. After an eight-week residency, the artists will have their exhibits on site for two months. The purpose of these residencies is to give artists every opportunity to grow by giving them the resources they need.

Summer Cocktail Menu and Happy Hour at Jazz, TX

Jazz, TX is getting ready for the summer months by revealing an exciting Summer Cocktail Menu. This new menu includes refreshing traditional cocktails with a twist such as “The Troubadour” – a seasonal old fashioned favorite and creative unique blends like the “Cape Town Smoke” – a cocktail of smoke and savory citrus flavors. Aside from the new cocktail menu, Jazz, TX also has a Summer Happy Hour menu starting on Thursday June 1 and available throughout the summer. This limited menu will feature a gourmet Chorizo Queso appetizer and the “Five O’Clock Somewhere” tequila cocktail. Menu items will be $5 each and available Tuesday through Saturday from 5p.m. to 7p.m.

CD release parties at Jazz, TX

This month, Jazz, TX is hosting two CD release parties. The first is for Ed Sherry’s “New Orleans Party” on Wednesday May 17 from 8:30p.m. to 11:30p.m. and the second is for Adrian Ruiz’ “Premiere” on Tuesday May 23 also from 8:30p.m. to 11:30p.m. Tickets for both are $10 per person and are available online. Ed Sherry and his all-star band make the Alamo City debut of his first CD release as a band leader with “New Orleans Party.” This recording is a musical journey from the roots of traditional jazz to today’s street beats of the French Quarter and features some of San Antonio’s finest musicians. It includes fourteen New Orleans classic tunes as Ed sings and plays the trumpet in fine form.

Adrian Ruiz and his Quintet will perform in celebration of the release of “Premiere.” This recording contains original compositions written by each band member. Ruiz is the Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combos director for University of Texas San Antonio and a freelance trumpeter performing throughout Texas.

On Tuesday May 16 Jazz, TX will continue its Chef Series event with Guest Chef Danny Orta and a Japanese inspired menu. This event is limited to 30 guests and tickets are available online for $125 per person. Ticket includes a pre-fixe menu for two including gratuity, tax, cocktails and a cover fee if guests wish to stay and enjoy the 8:30p.m. show of The Doc Watkins Quartet featuring Jonathan Card.  Dinner will be from 6p.m. to 8p.m. and the show will be from 8:30p.m. to 11:30p.m. The menu will consist of five specialty courses including oysters, potato salad, lump crab meat, dry braised beef rib, seared scallop and milk honey with dry ice and caramel honeycomb for dessert.  Paired with the food will be Japanese spirits including Shōchū, Sake and Japanese Whiskey from the bar. Fiesta time in San Antonio means days of parties and events to celebrate the city’s diverse cultures and this year Jazz, TX is getting in on the action. The Pearl’s upscale music venue announces its Fiesta celebration of A Night in Old Jazz Texas on Wednesday April 19 and Wednesday April 26 from 8:30p.m. to 11:30p.m. This event will feature a special menu by Executive Chef Lorenzo Morales and a special performance by Mariachi Las Coronelas. This high energy all female group has performed for shows such as The Jimmy Kimmel Show, Will Ferrel’s Funny or Die Music and Comedy Show and more. Guests will be able to enjoy a Fiesta inspired menu with items such as Corn in a Cup, Chicken Tinga Quesadillas, Beef Gorditas, Duck on a Stick and Carnival Funnel Cake. On Tuesday April 18, Jazz, TX will kick off its Chef Series with Executive Chef Lorenzo Morales. Chef Morales will feature a special Mole & Mezcal inspired menu at Jazz, TX from 6p.m to 8p.m. It consists of a specialty pre-fixe menu for two including gratuity, tax, cocktail and a cover fee if guests are interested in staying for the 8:30 p.m. show of The Doc Watkins Trio. The five courses start with Duck Chilorio with tortilla and continue with Ensalada con Hierbas with Mole Amarillo Vin, Flor de Calabaza Quesadilla, Mole Rojo con Pollo and Tamale de Maize Dulce. Chef Morales will also serve bread and fried corn tortillas with salsa picante and mantequilla de champolines. The food will be paired with mezcal cocktails from the bar. Coming up in April at Jazz, TX is the musical revue ‘The Real Life La La Land’ from Wednesday April 5 through Friday April 7, 2017. It mirrors the inspiration of the critically acclaimed musical movie La La Land and it is told from the perspective of former jazz club bartender and singing waiter Dave Damiani. Dave Damiani and Graham Fenton met over 10 years ago at Miceli’s Restaurant in Hollywood where they were working as singing waiters. Their ultimate dream is to bring back the class, style and swagger of places like the 500 Club and The Copacabana. Straight from Las Vegas it will feature Jazz, TX club owner Doc Watkins and special guests Graham Fenton, star of Las Vegas’ Jersey Boys, Dave Damiani, from Sinatra 100, CBS Vegas, Bijon Watson, trumpet player featured in La La Land and Watkin’s orchestra. They will be performing songs from famed jazz artists like Frank Sinatra, Frankie Valli, Dean Martin and Nat “King” Cole as well as melodies from the movie. There will be two sets each night, one at 7p.m. and the other at 9:30p.m. Tickets are $25 each and are available online. (Jazz, TX, 2016)

Jazz, TX, the Pearl’s upscale jazz venue, is hosting its first Mardi Gras celebration on Fat Tuesday, February 28, 2017. There will be a special menu created by locally renowned guest chef John Russ previously from Luke and a special performance by Kyle Keener, Curtis Calderon and friends during happy hour from 5:30p.m. with no cover charge and Doc Watkins and friends from 8:30p.m. to 11:30p.m. with a $20 cover charge per guest.
