Exciting news, fellow book lovers! The annual San Antonio Book Festival is happening this weekend. I was lucky enough to be at the inaugural event and it was so much fun. Book festivals are vibrant celebrations of literature that bring together authors, publishers, and avid readers to explore everything book related. These events cater to book enthusiasts and offer a platform for diverse voices and narratives to thrive. From panel discussions to book signings, they foster an immersive experience where attendees can explore the world of storytelling. Book festivals ignite a passion for reading, sparking intellectual discourse and fostering a sense of community among bibliophiles. With their eclectic mix of genres and authors, these festivals serve as catalysts for inspiration, creativity, and the enduring love affair with the written word.
The San Antonio Book Festival (SABF), taking place at the Central Library and UTSA Southwest Campus in downtown San Antonio, is excited to celebrate their 12th annual festival this Saturday, April 13 from 9a.m. to 5p.m. The festival will feature nearly 100 national, regional and local authors including 66 sessions for guests to attend. A full list of all the sessions at the festival is available online. The festival is FREE and open to all ages. (San Antonio Book Festival, 2024)
SABF is also hosting its Authors in Schools program in partnership with San Antonio ISD and Edgewood ISD on Friday, April 12. Participating authors include Pedro Martin (Mexikid) and Kazu Kibuishi (Waverider). The Authors in Schools program helps encourage a passion for reading among children and teens, pairing award-winning authors with underserved, low-income schools to deliver presentations, tell funny stories, share personal journeys, and describe the process of writing their books. All students in attendance receive a free, signed copy of the author’s book to take home. This year’s Authors in Schools program will impact over 1,500 students.

The special version of the beloved film and Broadway show will debut in San Antonio for the first time. Photo: Children’s Ballet of San Antonio, used with permission.
Go back to school with the Children’s Ballet of San Antonio and their first-ever musical production, the smart and ferociously funny Mean Girls JR. Premiering Friday, April 5 at the Dance Center of San Antonio’s brand-new Black Box Theatre, the production adapts Tina Fey’s iconic movie and subsequent Broadway smash hit for audiences of all ages, presented by a cast of the region’s finest young performers. (Children’s Ballet of San Antonio, 2024)
Mean Girls JR. tells the story of student Cady Heron who must learn to navigate the treacherous social hierarchy of high school when her family moves to suburban Illinois from Kenya. Cady may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the wild and vicious ways of her new school. How will this naive newbie rise to the top of the popularity pecking order? By taking on “The Plastics,” a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. But when Cady devises a plan to end Regina’s reign, she learns the hard way that you can’t cross a queen bee without getting stung.
Showtimes: Friday, April 5 at 7:30p.m., Saturday, April 6 at 7:30p.m., Sunday, April 7 at 2p.m. and 6p.m. Tickets: $20, available for purchase online
Mean Girls JR. is a version of the hit musical Mean Girls that has been adapted for performance by students. The musical, featuring a book by Tina Fey (30 Rock), lyrics by Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde), and music by composer Jeff Richmond (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), was adapted from Fey’s 2004 film. Mean Girls opened on Broadway in 2018 and was nominated for 12 Tony Awards.
The Children’s Ballet of San Antonio and its sponsor school, the Dance Center of San Antonio, are the leading providers of youth dance instruction and performance opportunities in the region. In less than 10 years, CBSA performers and Dance Center students have won numerous international awards and world-renowned scholarships, and founder Vanessa Bessler is a nine-time consecutive winner of Youth America Grand Prix’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year. The Dance Center was recently recognized as among the top 2.5 percent of dance institutions in the nation. Local audiences delight in CBSA’s biannual professional-grade performances held in San Antonio’s top theatres. Now CBSA is pleased to bring another performing arts opportunity to San Antonio with this Broadway-style musical, the first show to be held in the Dance Center of San Antonio’s new venue, the Black Box Theatre.
Among the stunningly talented CBSA cast are Valeria Velasco as Regina and Madison Aikens as Cady, both committed students of the Dance Center of San Antonio’s Musical Theater day program. Aikens recently won Best Performer in a Musical at the 2023 Broadway World Austin awards. Velasco, is a member of the Texas Cultural Trust’s Young Masters Program, a prestigious scholarship program recognizing excellence in the performing arts. These stars and their CBSA cast members are supported by an experienced production team including specialists in vocal performance, choreography, and theater direction.
The interactive, multimedia production is the perfect show to debut in the new Black Box Theatre at the Dance Center of San Antonio, an intimate performance venue in North Central San Antonio. “The close proximity of the audience allows for intimate and interactive shows,” says Bessler. “Because the black box theatre allows for multiple configurations and settings, it gives young performers the opportunity to play with and explore the space to make creative artistic choices.”
Mean Girls JR. is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International, one of the world’s leading theatrical licensing agencies. MTI works directly with the composers, lyricists and book writers of these musicals to provide official scripts, musical materials and dynamic theatrical resources to over 70,000 professional, community and school theatres.
Mean Girls JR. is yet another example of the Children’s Ballet of San Antonio’s ambitious vision for youth performing arts. Don’t miss your chance to see San Antonio’s young stars in action as they dance and sing their hearts out in the city’s coziest new theatre.

Fermenteria, a unique new alcoholic beverage, introduces hard water kefir to the San Antonio market. Photo: Giant Noise Partners, used with permission.
San Antonio’s newest taproom — Fermenteria — is now open for business at 2243 East Commerce. Fermenteria is a hard water kefir beverage that is naturally fermented and alive with hundreds of strains of probiotics, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Kefir grains are used to balance the fermentation environment, then flavored with botanicals and natural extracts for a lightly sweet and effervescent finish. The alcohol is created from a wild yeast culture that occurs within the fermentation process. (Fermenteria, 2024)
Fermenteria is owned by entrepreneur Jade Sheppard, who studied at the University of Texas in Austin. The team at Fermenteria learned how to make hard water kefir after first trying it in Nicaragua and spent the last two years working with brew masters in central Texas to build a formula and method that would allow her to brew it commercially.
“When I first tried hard water kefir, I was astonished at how light and bubbly it was because it gave me a great little buzz with no hangover. I couldn’t be more excited to share this great drink with the Central Texas community. Now that we’ve opened our doors, Fermenteria will be a fantastic, healthy alcoholic alternative.” – owner Jade Sheppard.
Every ingredient used at Fermenteria is curated for quality and flavor profile. Water kefir beverages contain 100% naturally occurring enzymes, probiotics, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that support the gut’s biome, aiding in metabolism and strengthens the immune system. Fermenteria’s alcoholic beverages contain 5% alcohol, zero sugar, and are only 100 calories. Flavors include Pineapple Lemongrass, Brut, Hibiscus Sangria, Paloma, Thai Lime Coconut, and Orange Elderflower. The taproom will also be serving several non-alcoholic options including nitro cold brew coffee and espresso beverages in addition to some water kefir flavors. Non-alcoholic flavors include Pineapple Coconut, Butterfly Pea Tea Lemonade, and Strawberry Lime Tulsi.
The taproom is open Wednesday through Sunday. Operating hours are 4p.m. to 10p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 4p.m. to midnight on Fridays, 11a.m. to midnight on Saturdays, and 11a.m. to 9p.m. on Sundays. In addition to enjoying Fermenteria in the taproom, guests can also purchase growlers to-go or bring in their own container. Fermenteria will soon be bottling its product to be available at local grocery and convenience stores; more information to be announced at a later date. Local bars and restaurants interested in carrying Fermenteria on tap can contact the taproom for more information.
With a commitment to work alongside the small business community, Fermenteria will host a free monthly community event for San Antonio residents to look forward to. Each event will give back proceeds being donated to a local nonprofit. The first community event at Fermenteria will be held from 6p.m. to midnight on Saturday, April 13. The event will benefit the Thrive Youth Center, a shelter for LGBTQ+ youth.
