The Seldom Scene Reimagines a Classic: A Bluegrass Twist on Bob Dylan’s ‘Farewell, Angelina’

The Seldom Scene gives fans a new take on a long-beloved Bob Dylan Song. Photo: Jeromie Stephens, used with permission.

Bethesda, MD -This month, The Seldom Scene released their delicate and masterful version of the timeless classic “Farewell, Angelina.” Written by Bob Dylan for his widely-lauded album Bringing It All Back Home (1965) and famously recorded by Joan Baez, the haunting waltz is still being resurrected six decades later. And not just by US-based songwriters like Jeff Buckley and John Mellencamp—the song has been carried through France and Italy (“Adieu, Angelina,” “Addio Angelina”), India, Sweden, and beyond. The Seldom Scene’s elegiac interpretation glides through intimate conversation between words and strings. (IV PR, 2025)

“This song, written in 1964, is another gem by Bob Dylan,” says Seldom Scene bassist Ronnie Simpkins, whose daughter insisted the band give the song their own treatment. “I’m glad we listened!” he laughs. Basing their arrangement more on Mellencamp’s 1997 Rough Harvest version than the original, the 53-year-running quartet originally from Bethesda, Maryland, gives “Farewell, Angelina” space to breathe and blossom. The track opens with Ron Stewart deftly picking the guitar in duet with Bluegrass Hall of Famer Dudley Connell’s rich, soft voice. One by one, dobro, fiddle, mandolin, and acoustic bass add subtle new layers to the story without overtly announcing themselves. The Seldom Scene’s poignant arrangement gives depth and texture to the song’s surreal poetry.

“Farewell, Angelina” is the latest single from the Seldom Scene’s forthcoming album, Remains to Be Scene—out March 14 on Smithsonian Folkways. Continuing their long-running legacy of pulling gems from outside of and within the bluegrass canon and reimagining them in what is now the Seldom Scene’s signature style, Remains to Be Scene features an interpretation of Jim Croce’s “A Good Time Man Like Me Ain’t Got No Business (Singin’ the Blues),” a pair of songs by Bob Dylan: “Walking Down the Line” and, of course, “Farewell Angelina,” while also revisiting a fan-favorite, “White Line,” from the iconic Live at the Cellar Door album and paying tribute to their inspirations, Flatt & Scruggs, with “Hard Travelin’.”

Americana UK shared an early listen. Today, fans can stream or purchase “Farewell, Angelina” and pre-order or pre-save Remains to Be Scene ahead of its March release here.

Remains to Be Scene tracklist:
Last of the Steam-Powered Trains
Crossroads
A Good Time Man Like Me Ain’t Got No Business (Singin’ the Blues)
Hard Travelin’
Farewell Angelina
Walking Down the Line
Lonesome Day
I Could Cry
White Line
Show Me the Way to Go Home
The Story of My Life

Self-produced with engineering and mixing by Jim Robeson at his studio The Bar in Rockville, Maryland, Remains to Be Scene caps the end of an era for the group in many ways. The album is dedicated to the memory of Bluegrass Hall of Famer and Seldom Scene cofounder Ben Eldridge, who retired from the group in 2014. But Eldridge remained a major presence and friend to the band, penning heartfelt liner notes for this album before his passing in April 2024.

Also notable is that Remains to Be Scene marks the final album for Dudley Connell, another Bluegrass Hall of Famer as a member of the Johnson Mountain Boys. Connell wrapped up a Seldom Scene tenure of nearly three decades on guitar and vocals with his retirement at the end of 2024. “Twenty-nine years, dude, that’s a long, long time,” Connell says with a laugh. “No regrets, I’ve loved every minute of it, and it’s been a real joy working with these guys for so long. But I want to get out while I still have my mobility and can travel, walk my dog, things like that.”

The Seldom Scene has mostly stayed close to home in the greater Washington, D.C. vicinity for most of its 53 years of existence. Even as the progressive bluegrass quintet’s lineup has turned over multiple times from those early days, The Scene has maintained an admirably high standard of musicality and artistry, on record as well as onstage at live-residency venues like The Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia.

The band makes old songs sound brand new while putting a bluegrass spin on some of the least-likely cover songs in the genre. Those virtues are all in place on Remains to Be Scene, their 24th album, released on Smithsonian Folkways, on which they cover everybody from Bob Dylan to The Kinks with customary flair. The album is also another milestone effort for the Scene — the first since the passing of co-founder Ben Eldridge (who penned liner notes before his death in April 2024) as well as the last for longtime Scene member Dudley Connell, who is retiring after 29 years in the band. As usual, the rest of the Scene is taking those departures in stride. One way or another, The Seldom Scene will go on.

A Murder Mystery with a Supernatural Twist: Reviewing Marty Roppelt’s ‘Last Words’

‘Last Words: A Supernatural Murder Mystery’ by Marty Roppelt. Photo: Amazon

“Last Words: A Supernatural Murder Mystery” is a murder mystery novel by Marty Roppelt. It follows Chicago police Detective Myles Hanson as he navigates a world of crime and unsettling revelations. After a nighttime raid on a drug lab ends in a deadly shootout that claims the life of an undercover detective, Myles transfers transfers out of the Organized Crime Unit.

On his first night in the Violet Crimes Unit, Maria Peski, a midwife with a normal quiet life is savagely murdered. Back at the station, while filling out the paperwork and listening to music on his headphones, he hears static and voice calling his name. From there, he begins to experience haunting visions and auditory hallucinations that include voices and static on the digital recorder that he uses to take notes.

When a second murder rocks the city with startling similarities, Myles is forced to accept what he fears most: some clues lie beyond the realm of the living. As the line between the supernatural and the real begins to blur, Myles realized that he is hearing the final words of the murder victims, fragments of their unfinished thoughts. Those voices give him clues to help him solve their murder. Together with his new partner Hank ‘The Tank’ Brewer, they race against time to catch the vicious killer before he strikes again.

Marty Roppelt’s new novella takes readers on an eerie journey into the world of the paranormal and crime-solving. As Hanson begins to have paranormal experiences, he must navigate the fine line between solving the crime and protecting his sanity.

Roppelt’s writing is atmospheric, creating a tense, thrilling narrative that keeps the reader hooked. The blending of the supernatural with a traditional murder mystery provides an intriguing twist, adding an extra layer of suspense to the already gripping storyline. Myles Hanson is a well-crafted protagonist, balancing the skepticism of a seasoned detective with the growing realization that the paranormal forces at play are very real. The suspenseful plot twists keep the reader guessing until the end.

The pacing of the novel is steady, allowing the mystery to unfold gradually, and Roppelt’s descriptive narrative of the killer’s viewpoint as he is getting rid of the evidence and then preparing to strike again is unsettling but gripping. The language while describing Myles’ hallucinations is vividly descriptive: “The woman – Maria Peski- stared back at him in the mirror. Dead eyes, frozen deep in their sockets, gazed through him.” The narrative is in the third person point of view that alternates between the characters and towards the end, it hints at an unreliable narrator when the police is interviewing a witness who crossed paths with the killer.

Overall, “Last Words: A Supernatural Murder Mystery” explores the themes of good vs evil, identity, and family. The unique premise of a haunted detective elevates this novel beyond the typical whodunit. Judging by the ending, this is only the beginning of Detective Myles Hanson’s paranormal experiences. It’s a captivating read for fans of both supernatural thrillers and crime mysteries by authors like James Patterson and John Sandford.

“Meandering through the growing crowd as carefully and slowly as he could, he positioned himself to within an arm’s length of his intended victim’s back. He stopped there. How easy it would be to simply stab her in the liver from here, and be done with her…”

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Sacred Echoes: The Power of Art in ‘Vestigios de lo Sagrado’ at the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum

Vestigios de lo Sagrado: A Solo Exhibition By Mitch D’arte is currently on view at the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum.

The San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum is delighted to introduce the decade-long collection of work by McAllen-based artist Mitch D’arte in her first solo exhibition of this scale in Cameron County. Vestigios de lo Sagrado: A Solo Exhibition by Mitch D’arte is on view from now until April 17, 2025.

Vestigios de lo Sagrado features over 30 paintings and installations — created with collected, donated, and found artifacts. Each of these is a meditation on the role of religious iconography and the role of the individual in the crafting and veneration of them. Inspired by the artist’s relationship with her late mother, there are intentionally unfinished elements that bring some of the work to a halt and invite the viewer to complete the image or reflect on their own relationship to it. In doing so, D’arte is creating a space of not only retrospection but a peek into potential, personal futures. (San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum, 2025)

The opening reception took place on Saturday February 8 and began with a speech from Aleida Garcia, Director of the San Benito Cultural Arts Department (CAD) where she welcomed everyone to the exhibit and expressed her thanks to everyone who worked hard to make it happen. She introduced the artist, Mitch D’Arte, and encouraged guests to ask questions and enjoy the artwork.

Guests to the event were able to enjoy classical and guitar music by Jorge Mascorro, guitar teacher at the San Benito CISD as well as light snacks while mingling with fellow art lovers from the community.

The exhibition captivates with its various religious exhibits as the artist explores the complexities of faith and ritual. It blends traditional religious imagery with contemporary artistry and each piece invites reflection on the intersection of art, spirituality, and cultural identity. D’Arte’s techniques and bold interpretations offer a fresh, profound perspective on the power of sacred visual language. It includes works in mixed media, canvas, and exquisitely delicate veil, some in various stages of completion and vivid colors that bring religious icons to life.

Religious art has captivated art lovers for centuries due to its deep emotional and spiritual resonance. Often depicting divine figures, sacred events, and religious symbolism, it serves as a bridge between the material and the divine. The intricate artistry and vivid colors invoke a sense of reverence and awe and often embodies cultural traditions, offering a window into history, beliefs, and rituals. With its ability to induce profound contemplation, it connects people to universal themes of faith, salvation, and the mysteries of existence, making it deeply compelling for art lovers. Art lovers, this is one exhibition you won’t want to miss. Stop by the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum to enjoy this exhibition by McAllen’s own Mitch D’arte.

El Tigre: A Bold New Addition to San Antonio’s Coffee Scene

Local restaurateur Tatanka Guerrero expands Dreamers & Doers Hospitality Group
featuring first concept in San Antonio’s St. Paul Square. Courtesy photo, used with permission.

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – El Tigre is thrilled to open the doors of its new coffee shop and café to the general public at a brand new location within St. Paul Square, San Antonio’s historic downtown district that’s evolving into a world-class entertainment and cultural arts destination. (El Tigre, 2025)

Located at 123 Heiman Street, near the intersection of Heiman Street and Hoefgen Avenue, this new brick-and-mortar location at St. Paul Square follows in the footsteps of the beloved flagship coffee shop located in East Austin that opened in 2019.

Business hours at El Tigre at St. Paul Square are 7a.m. to 3p.m. CT daily, where patrons can look forward to a curated menu of specialty drinks from lattes to espressos to cappuccinos to drip coffee, matchas, cold brews, teas, mushroom cacao, and more.

For the food menu, patrons can enjoy breakfast sandwiches, avocado toast, and pastries in the morning with salads, bowls, and sandwich options available for lunch. Fans should stay tuned as this new location will soon roll out an updated menu in the coming weeks.

At the new El Tigre, the team will continue to work with all-natural and organic producers from around the world who specialize in sustainable and ethical farming practices – notably from Brazil and Honduras – while planting roots in the Alamo City to continue their mission of serving Texans through high-quality coffee and warm hospitality.

“We welcome all of San Antonio to visit El Tigre, and experience what makes our café so special. It’s not just about the quality coffee we serve, but the community we look to build – one that is inspired by creativity and unity.” –  El Tigre’s owner and Dreamers & Doers Hospitality’s founder Tatanka Guerrero

El Tigre at St. Paul Square will continue to be led by local resident and acclaimed restaurateur Tatanka Guerrero through his independently-owned Dreamers and Doers Hospitality Group, where his team will look to work with local producers to uplift the local San Antonio community while tapping international organic producers who share their same commitment to quality, community, and sustainability.

As a proud Chilean-turned-Texan, Guerrero first gained national prominence following his first restaurant Al Campo in Marfa which was preceded by other successful projects in Miami and Los Angeles. Most recently, Guerrero opened the intimate Oaxacan-and-Japanese design-inspired cocktail bar Trona in Austin’s growing Eastside neighborhood, where it quickly grew to prominence as one of the city’s most sought-after and well-designed bars.

Within Dreamers & Doers, other notable Texas concepts include the aforementioned coffee shop El Tigre; wine shop and bar Cork & Screw; tattoo shop Slowpoke Marfa; alfresco food court Camp East; and food truck court Arbor Food Park.

Originally founded in 1778, St. Paul Square is a historic multi-acre district found near downtown San Antonio, Texas, located just one hundred yards north of the Alamodome and a short walk from the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.

The District’s name is derived from Old St. Paul Methodist Episcopal Church constructed in the late 1800s. With a rich background rooted in San Antonio’s history, St. Paul Square is developing today into a vibrant entertainment and cultural arts district that showcases the beautiful history and diversity of the Alamo City.

It is home to a wide variety of businesses including locally-owned restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and coffee shops as well as performance venues, hotels, retail, offices, and more.

‘El Día Más Triste’ by Alex Cuba: His Most Emotionally Charged Single Yet

Alex Cuba releases his new single right before his new US tour. Courtesy photo, used with permission.

Los Angeles, CA. –  ®Grammy Award-winning artist, Alex Cuba releases brand new music in time for Valentine’s Day and coinciding with the launch of a tour of the United States. The Cuban/Canadian singer-songwriter announces the release of the first single for his upcoming 2025 album. (Vesper Public Relations, 2025)

“El Día Más Triste” is about transforming hurt into understanding. Feelings of love are joyous, wondrous events in our lives, spontaneous and beautiful. Its shadow side, those moments of betrayal, hurt and emptiness are no less important in how they create growth and urgency in our lives. “El Día Más Triste” shows the depth of sorrow, the pain of a ruptured relationship, and the process of rumination and inner conflict surrounding the confusion. “Es Amor” (it’s love) Alex remarks in the chorus at the conclusion of his self-reflection. An equally poignant part of our Valentine’s Day celebration is that side of love, that when it is missing, leaves a hole in our hearts.

The video was filmed in Miami with Cuban director Yeandro Tamayo. Warm intimacy invites the viewer into his healing journey through sad moments.

Alex Cuba’s U.S. Tour — No More Empty Words —At the heart of his ability to charm anything that breathes is Alex’s mastery of a deeper, more important language. The dude speaks joy. And it doesn’t’ matter if it’s Tito Puente joy or Stevie Wonder joy; it’s contagious. It shines through songs he’s co-written with Nelly Furtado and Jason Mraz. It’s the north star of his compositions.

Wherever his songs start their journey–in the land of lust, deep affection, or even melancholy–they know where they’re headed. Their path leads to a deep, shimmering gladness that everyone wishes was their native tongue. It’s this undeniable exuberance, expressed with masterful musicianship that has catapulted Alex to the highest levels of global critical acclaim. It’s what led this fiercely independent artist to 2 Juno awards, 4 Latin Grammys, and a 2022 Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album.

Just like his songs elicit “la-la-las” from audiences without a translator, they woo critics without a middleman. The magic he makes with melody and rhythm can’t be held back. Because in the end, whether in times of trouble or celebration, people everywhere want to go where Alex’s songs are going, to an unconditional sense of home, belonging, and bliss.

Though raised in Artemisa, an hour outside of Havana, Alex Cuba’s artistry is as far-flung as the place he has settled and lived for over fifteen years: Smithers, BC, 14 hours north of Vancouver. His music at once incorporates his roots and is a unique amalgam of styles, having collaborated with artists ranging from Jason Mraz to Ron Sexsmith and Nelly Furtado; and bringing together melodies, pop-soul hooks, and rock chords in songs that may seem to bear little resemblance to traditional Cuban form.

A forward-thinking, indie-minded artist, Alex has amassed a steadily growing following among critics and fans. He has over 20 awards and nominations to his name, including four Latin Grammys, two Juno Awards, and, in 2022, his first Grammy Award from a total of four career Grammy nominations.

Alex carries his Cuba within, incorporating subtle jazz influences gained from his early years as a bass player in Cuba. His tasteful, sophisticated chords and lyrics express his poetry in an undeniably Cuban way. His growing body of work defines a unique musical place in the Latin diaspora.

Heartfelt and Suspenseful: My Thoughts on ‘The Whole Time: Part 1’

‘The Whole Time: Part 1’ is the first book in the series by Maizy Ren.

“The Whole Time: Part 1′ by Maizy Ren

The story is set in Plainview, New Jersey, where Hunter Key is a member of the Pests, an underground criminal organization. They are just one of the gangs that control the city and their corruption runs deep. Hunter is an Informant and recently, he has sat in at the Inner Circle’s meeting and is hoping to someday be the leader. He sees them as family, and family means everything. Before that can happen, he is given a big job: kidnap Locklyn Elwell, the only child of the wealthy Elwell Enterprises, for ransom.

Locklyn Elwell doesn’t want to inherit the family business, but for now has to go along with what her distant parents dictate, even if it means taking a slap or two to the face. She has mad computer skills, which she uses to bypass the security cameras on the estate and has tried to run away several times. Her constant entourage of security guards include Dayton, who is more of a father figure than her own father. She has been homeschooled her whole life, but now her parents are sending her to Plainview Academy. At first she doesn’t have any friends, but eventually she gains the friendship and acceptance of a small group of outcasts.

Hunter tries to get close to Locklyn at school and waits for the perfect time to get her away but the more time they spend together, the less he wants to complete the job. Not to mention that his reality is shattered when he finds out what the Pests do when no one is looking and that there’s more to Locklyn than meets the eye.

This is Part 1 of The Whole Times series of books, four in total and a captivating and promising start to the series. The story revolves around a group of diverse characters navigating complex emotions and situations, with a particular focus on love, loss, and self-discovery. The writing is emotive, drawing readers into the world of the characters and making them feel every moment of the journey. “The blackness in his wandering eyes match the blackness of the night surrounding us.”

The characters of Hunter and Locklyn are relatable and multi-dimensional, struggling with inner conflicts that feel authentic and modern. The relationships in the book—whether romantic, familial, or friendships—are examined at length, highlighting the tenderness and the intensity of human connection.

The pacing is well-balanced, with moments of reflection and tension that keep the action moving. It is written in the 1st person point of view, including Hunter, Locklyn, Zachni, Dayton, and others, so we see the world through their eyes and hints at unreliable narrators. While the first part in the series leaves readers wanting more, it sets the stage for an exciting continuation of the story.

Overall, “The Whole Time: Part 1″ explores the themes of family, love, identity, and coming of age. Fans of contemporary romance, mystery, suspense, and character-driven narratives will find it a compelling read.

“I feel small under the weight of his stare. Weak. Like a tiny animal being hunted. His eyes study me as if calculating my every move.”

Rating: 5 out of 5.
