“The Dark Hours” – There is chaos in Hollywood at the end of the New Year’s Eve countdown. Working her graveyard shift, LAPD detective Renée Ballard waits out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air. Only minutes after midnight, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party. Ballard concludes that the deadly bullet could not have fallen from the sky and that it is linked to another unsolved murder—a case at one time worked by Detective Harry Bosch. At the same time, Ballard hunts a fiendish pair of serial rapists, the Midnight Men, who have been terrorizing women and leaving no trace. Determined to solve both cases, Ballard feels like she is constantly running uphill in a police department indelibly changed by the pandemic and recent social unrest. It is a department so hampered by inertia and low morale that Ballard must go outside to the one detective she can count on: Harry Bosch. But as the two inexorable detectives work together to find out where old and new cases intersect, they must constantly look over their shoulders. The brutal predators they are tracking are ready to kill to keep their secrets hidden.

After borrowing $30,000 from a friend of his father to finance his first real estate deal, Michael E. Bash officially became a millionaire. Since then, he has been involved with major planning and zoning projects and building and developing shopping centers, hundreds of homes, office buildings, water and sewer systems, and nearly 3,000 apartment units and condominiums throughout New York State. His charitable contributions included helping to fund Danny Thomas’s annual telethon for St. Jude’s Hospital which raises $10-20 million per year. He also participated in building the Laniado Hospital in Netanya, Israel, and is one of the founders and contributors to the Jerusalem Great Synagogue. In addition, Bash has contributed $1 million to Ben Gurian University in Israel. (Michael E. Bash, 2021)

In his latest book, “Million Dollar Miracle: How to Make a Million Dollars in One Day and Never Have to Work Again,” former adviser to President Jimmy Carter, Michael E. Bash reveals the strategies and tactics that led him to amass his multi-million-dollar fortune. These same techniques helped elevate him as a businessperson and human being. “Million Dollar Miracle” provides the proven, easy formula for transforming a simple piece of land into a one-time million-dollar payoff and spending the rest of your life living off the interest. It also explains how to repeat the process for additional paydays. Michael E. Bash has used this formula all his adult life to augment his luxury lifestyle and to fund his pet projects in the arts, medicine, and religion – as well as support the careers goals of people around him.

“Given the current population growth in many parts of the US, the demand for affordable housing is greater than ever. Therefore, now is the right time to educate yourself about real estate, and to grab the next opportunity to become a millionaire.” – Michael E. Bash

“Million Dollar Miracle” provides actionable steps for finding and acquiring properties to develop or to rezone, the latter of which generally means changing the zoning of a property from single-family to commercial – thereby exponentially increasing its value in the marketplace. The same powerful technique can be used for enhancing all aspects of life – personal and professional.

To illustrate the power of Michael E. Bash’s skills, he relates many fact-based stories of opportunities that came his way – from fantastic real estate deals to the mentoring of an inexperienced rich kid and how he was able to recognize and fulfill their huge potential. “Million Dollar Miracle” is captivatingly crafted to educate, entertain, and inspire readers to reach for their own highest potential.

“Autopsy: A Scarpetta Novel” – Forensic pathologist Kay Scarpetta has come almost full circle, returning to Virginia as the chief medical examiner, the state where she launched her storied career. Finding herself the new girl in town once again after being away for many years, she has inherited not only an overbearing secretary, but also a legacy of neglect and potential corruption. She and her husband Benton Wesley, now a forensic psychologist with the U.S. Secret Service, have relocated to Old Town Alexandria where she is headquartered five miles from the Pentagon in a post-pandemic world that is been torn by civil and political unrest. Just weeks on the job, she is called to a scene by railroad tracks where a woman’s body has been shockingly displayed, her throat cut down to the spine, and as Scarpetta begins to follow the trail, it leads unnervingly close to her own historic neighborhood.

At the same time, a catastrophe occurs in a top-secret laboratory in outer space, endangering at least two scientists aboard. Appointed to the highly classified Doomsday Commission that specializes in sensitive national security cases, Scarpetta is summoned to the White House and tasked with finding out exactly what happened. But even as she works the first potential crime scene in space remotely, an apparent serial killer strikes again remarkably close to home.

“Some Things I Still Can’t Tell You: Poems” – This book is a compilation of small observations and musings. It is filled with moments of reflection and a love letter to simple joys: passing a simple blade of grass on the sidewalk, the freedom of peeing outdoors late at night, or the way a hand-built ceramic mug feels when it is full of warm tea on a chilly morning. It is a catalog and a compendium that examines the complicated experience of being all too human and interacting with a complex, confounding, breathtaking world, and a reminder to stop and be awake and alive in yourself. Trademark wit and subtle vulnerability converge in each poem.

Movie review: Demigod

Demigod is coming to theaters and On Demand on Friday, October 15, 2021. Courtesy photo, used with permission.

Just in time for the Halloween season, Demigod, starring Rachel Nichols, Jeremy London, and Elena Sanchez opens nationwide in theaters and On Demand on Friday, October 15, 2021. Upon the death of her grandfather, a woman and her husband return to her birthplace in Germany’s Black Forest, only to find a terrifying secret awaits them. Directed by Miles Doleac. (Demigod, 2021)

After her grandfather dies, Robin (Rachel Nichols) and her husband Leo (Yohance Myles) travel to Germany to return to her childhood home in the Black Forest. She grew up there surrounded by the wonders of the forest and has memories of spending time with her grandfather. The more time she spends there, the clearer those memories become and they are not all pleasant ones. Soon after, a group of local witches captures the couple and they, along with other captured locals, become part of an ancient hunting ritual meant to appease Cernunnos. Cernunnos was an ancient Celtic god who represented nature, flora and fauna, and fertility. He is frequently depicted in Celtic art wearing stag antlers or horns and usually a torc around his neck.

Demigod is a horror movie composed mostly of suspenseful horror instead of the type of horror that scares people and haunts them after the movie is over. The Black Forest is the perfect location for this type of dark movie that centers around witches, a demigod, and winter solstice rituals. It also provides excellent cinematography that envelops the action and makes it come alive. Cernunnos’ dark red eyes stand out against the bleak background for dramatic purposes. Having a group of people struggling to survive reveals the strength of the human survival instinct and how far they are willing to go to protect a loved one. Prepare for a plot twist at the end.

Overall, Demigod is entertaining, suspenseful, and at times creepy. The violence is not too graphic, which might otherwise turn off more sensitive viewers. At only an hour and a half long, the story is short and to the point. There is some German dialogue with subtitles.

Digital platforms: iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Vudu, Xbox/Microsoft, Comcast/Xfinity, and more.
