It is time to start making plans for the biggest party of the year: New Year’s Eve. If you are in the San Antonio area, or plan to be, here are three ideas to get you ready to ring in the new year. Potluck Hospitality is excited to announce that Carriqui (239 E. Grayson St) will debut its New Year’s Eve House Party on December 31, 2022. In addition to standard dinner service (last seating at 9p.m.), the house party will  kick off at 10p.m. and run until 2a.m. In anticipation of 2023, Carriqui is taking inspiration from the building’s past as Boehler’s Garden. Fifty years ago, the historic building that is now Carriqui was owned and operated by Aubrey Kline and his brothers. Kline was affectionately known as “Mr. Pearl,” entertaining and hobnobbing with movie stars, politicians, and dignitaries. Upon his retirement from Pearl in 1972, he turned his attention to making Boehler’s Garden the place for a good time. 

Carriqui’s NYE House Party turns up the volume on good times and pays homage to the 1970s (period attire encouraged, but not required). Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased through Tock. The experience includes live music from beloved local favorites Buttercup and DJ Steven Lee Moya, appetizer stations, a champagne toast at midnight and breakfast tacos as a parting gift.

Krause’s Cafe & Biergarten announces Ugly Christmas Sweater Party and Contest

This year, Pearl is introducing a new mariachi music showcase called Canciones de Navidad (The Songs of Christmas). The mariachi concert will feature the festive musical stylings of Mariachi Azteca de América, Guadalupe Cultural Arts Mariachi Academy, Mariachi Oro from Burbank High School and Mariachi Hacón from Harris Middle School. Guests can expect to hear familiar holiday songs and enjoy light snacks and drinks from La Gloria and Chilaquil in 1100 Springs Plaza.

Chanukah at Pearl – Wednesday, December 21, 6p.m. to 8p.m.

Pearl is excited to host the 8th annual Chanukah at Pearl celebration this year in collaboration with Young & Jewish San Antonio, Rabbi Eli Block, musician Yaakov Chesed and Chef Jason Goldblum. On the evening of Wednesday, December 21, guests are invited to gather at Pearl to enjoy the lighting of the menorah and a special message from Rabbi Eli Block. Guests will also be able to experience traditional Chanukah music and kosher foods including matzah ball soup as well as some south Texas favorites like churros and tamales. Mayor Ron Nirenberg will be in attendance to give special remarks. The menorah at Pearl will be on display at the shade structure from December 18 through the 26.

Yanaguana Indian Arts Festival at the Briscoe this Saturday

Showcasing Native American heritage and its influence on the American West, the Briscoe Western Art Museum invites everyone to enjoy its free annual Yanaguana Indian Arts Festival, Saturday, November 19, 10a.m – 5p.m. Highlighting the continued vibrancy and artistic traditions of Native American communities, the event is free and includes admission to the Briscoe. The festival is a perfect way to mark Native American Heritage Month and celebrates the important role Native Americans played in shaping the West. (Briscoe Western Art Museum, 2022)

The free community festival features storytelling, artist demonstrations, pottery and carving, as well as Native American-inspired food, including REZR’vation Only, a food truck featuring Native American-inspired cuisine that is owned and operated by a registered member of the Navajo Nation. Yanaguana Indian Arts Festival also features workshops and lectures celebrating traditional and contemporary Native American culture. The event starts with a special blessing, followed by a ceremonial drum circle that invites everyone to join.

The annual event is named in honor of the Payaya people who were indigenous to the San Antonio area. “Yanaguana” was the word they used to describe what is now known as the San Antonio River. The festival has been held annually since the museum opened.

Yanaguana Indian Arts Festival highlights include:

  • An opening spiritual blessing United San Antonio Pow Wow, Inc.
  • A Pow Wow-style drum circle kicks off the day, with United San Antonio Pow Wow, Inc. and Enemy Horse Drumming demonstrating and explaining common pow wow dance styles. Another Pow Wow-style drum circle features the Great Promise Dancers in the afternoon, also demonstrating and explaining common pow wow dance styles.
  • Live music by Native American artists including flute player Tim Blueflint Ramel. An enrolled member of the Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa, a federally recognized American Indian Tribe, Blueflint has opened for and shared the stage with Grammy Award Winner Mary Youngblood and a wide variety of artists.
  • Stories from Amy Bluemel, a Chickasaw storyteller and the great-granddaughter of Eastman Kaney, an original Dawes Commission enrollee. Bluemel shares Chickasaw customs, and those of other southeastern tribes, through elaborate storytelling.
  • Ledger art with artist George Curtis Levi, showcasing how ledger art captures a moment in time. A type of art that originated amongst the Cheyenne in the late 1840s, ledger art utilized pages of repurposed record books to depict everyday life. A member of the Southern Cheyenne tribe in Oklahoma, Levi also has ties to the Arapaho and Oglala Lakota communities.
  • Pottery making with artist Jereldine Redcorn showcasing Caddo pottery, an art form she single-handedly revived. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Redcorn’s father was Caddo and her mother was Potawatomi. In 2009, First Lady Michelle Obama selected one of her pieces to decorate the Oval Office.
  • Kachina carving with Kevin Horace Quannie, a Hopi/Navajo contemporary artist. Living on the Hopi reservation, Quannie specializes in carving contemporary kachina dolls using cottonwood roots.
  • Crafts and demonstrations include making your own drum, creating a community weaving basket, paper bead necklaces, pottery making, loom weaving, wood carving and leather stamping.

Festival visitors also enjoy free admission to the Briscoe, including exhibitions highlighting the stories of the American Indian, cowboys, pioneering women and others that define the West. The museum’s fall exhibition highlights the wildlife and landscape of the West, featuring 40 of the renowned nature photographer Thomas D. Mangelsen’s most resonant photographs. Thomas D. Mangelsen – A Life In The Wild takes viewers on a journey across the West and around the globe. One of the most prolific nature photographers of our time, Mangelsen is an award-winning photographer whose images have been exhibited internationally and published in iconic mediums such as “National Geographic,” “Good Morning America,” and “60 Minutes.” The exhibition is open to the public through January 29, 2023.

Carriqui celebrates Día de los Muertos with curated dinner and performance

Potluck Hospitality is excited to announce that Carriqui will be honoring those who have passed with a specially curated ticketed dinner on Wednesday, November 2 from 7p.m. to 9p.m. for Día de los Muertos. Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas anniversary luncheon

The Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas (CBCST) will host its 25th Anniversary Luncheon from 11:30a.m. to 1p.m. on Thursday, October 27, at the Witte Museum, 3801 Broadway. For 25 years, the CBCST has provided critical support services for grieving children. This year’s event commemorates that milestone and will feature guest speaker Bode Miller, an Olympic and World Championship gold medalist in alpine skiing, who has personally experienced the tragic loss of a child. Bode Miller and his wife, former pro beach volleyball player Morgan Beck, are parents to eight children. In 2018, they suffered devastating loss after the tragic drowning of their 19-month-old daughter, Emeline. Miller will host a question-and-answer session during the luncheon, sharing his message of resilience and hope.

During the luncheon, attendees may purchase a limited edition necklace specifically designed for the CBCST by local jewelry artist, Lee Ann Jones, as part of her #ShareYourSparkle line. Featuring a lone Fresh Water Pearl and signature Diamond Fairy Dust Bead on a delicate gold chain, the necklace will sell for $500. One hundred dollars from each sale will be donated directly back to the CBCST.

CBCST believes that each person’s journey through grief is unique and therefore deserving of a distinctive approach. Their goal is to help children and their caregivers understand the depth of their grief, stabilize and preserve family relationships, and develop healthy coping skills after the death of a loved one.

Thompson San Antonio – Riverwalk’s signature rooftop lounge, The Moon’s Daughters, will host another Cosmic Night on October 9. This ongoing monthly series takes place whenever a full moon lands each month and will return for October’s hunter’s moon, which will be the first full moon of fall. As summer fades and the leaves start to turn, Austin’s charming Commodore Perry Estate, Auberge Resorts Collection welcomes fall and winter with new immersive seasonal programming, inspiring culinary creations, and excitement for the festive season. The  Estate will honor its Texas roots by bringing native Texan artisans, musicians, and flavors to ATX this autumn and beyond. The captivating city is a must-visit for the remainder of 2022. It will host the Formula 1 Grand Prix and Austin City Limits and more for travelers to step outside their comfort zones and enjoy the cultural hub that is Austin. These are some of the season’s highlights:

  • Taste of Auberge: Saison Hospitality: San Francisco’s Michelin-starred group Saison Hospitality brings innovative culinary activations on November 4 + 5. Locally curated seasonal Southern flavors will unite with upscale preparations of seasonal California dining for this exclusive culinary partnership. The guest series from Saison Hospitality’s Chef Brian Limoges and Executive Sous Chef Adam Gale (Saison) and Commodore Perry Estate’s Executive Chef Bradley Nicholson and Executive Pastry Chef Susana Querejazu will invite guests to honor collaboration in the kitchen with a private nine-course dinner at Lutie’s, as well as a fermenting workshop for all experience levels.
  • Game Day at The Estate: Every Friday on UT home game weekends, the Estate celebrates with visiting designer pop-up shops, interactive wine tasting events, local Austin musical performances, and guest bartending talent from local favorites and beyond. Friends and family can gather on game day for the resort’s delicious Saturday Brunch at the Mansion, complete with lawn games and pre-game drink specials, such as mimosa bars, shaken carajillos, local beer buckets, and more. For away games, the Estate’s Living Room becomes an extension of guests’ own, with TVs displaying the game paired with creative cocktails and delectable snacks.
  • A Very Texas Holiday Season: Guests can kick off the holidays with the annual festive lighting of the Mansion spectacular with a custom commissioned work from the Dallas-based conceptual artistic duo Anderson + Kincaid. Then, indulge in decadent Holiday Panettone, a collaboration with world-renowned Houston-based baker Roy Shvartzapel and Executive Pastry Chef Susan Querejazu, or give the ultimate gift by having Evan Voyles design a custom, hand-crafted neon piece for loved ones. The Larder Shop will curate a selection of culinary gifts by Chef Bradley Nicholson and Chef Susana Querejazu, allowing guests to bring a bit of the Estate home.
