San Antonio, TX – Contemporary at Blue Star is happy to announce our next exhibition, a site-specific installation of Sizhu Li’s Moonment. Moonment is an ongoing installation project inspired by a Chinese ancient poem “海上生明月,天涯共此时” by Tang poet Zhang Jiu Lin. (Contemporary at Blue Star, 2025)

Sizhu Li’s Moonment at the Contemporary
Opening First Friday, February 7, 2025 6p.m. – 9p.m Free admission

This work describes a surreal and poetic night-sea view that resonates with people of different locations. Aluminum sheets and programmed fans create a live moving percussive environment of waves. These constructions become a contemporary landscape where space is a physical material as much as a piece of metal or wood etc.

Li’s works are animated, poetic, and tell a story. Materials, though often unrefined, are treated as fleshy, melancholic, nostalgic characters. Their movements are direct, satisfying, repeated, comforting, and mesmerizing. Together, they immerse viewers in an echo of simplicity within the chaos of modern life—evoking live phenomena like moonlight on the flowing water or wind on young leaves. Li is influenced by Minimalism, Futurism, and Chinese painting, poetry, and philosophy. In ancient times, people lived simpler lives, but still had rich intellectual and spiritual experiences. Li believes that we have something to learn from a spirit of wonder that feeds the human soul and brings communities together.

Mystery, Suspense, and Organ Trafficking: Exploring the Depths of Cristina LePort’s ‘Change of Heart’

‘Change of Heart’ is the exciting new medical thriller by Cristina LePort. Photo: Amazon

After Amy Winter, a promising young medical student is found dead, Detective Kirk Miner is called to the scene and quickly uncovers a chilling conspiracy involving organ donations and high-stakes crime. As the investigation unfolds, Miner realizes the case is far more complex and dangerous than it initially seemed.

FBI Agent Jack Mulville and Special Agent Charlotte Bloom join forces with Miner to find Amy’s killer. Together, they unravel a web of corruption, revealing that her death is connected to a ruthless organ trafficking ring. Her death triggers an investigation that pulls Miner, Mulville, and Bloom into a labyrinth of deceit and desperation. As they dig deeper, they discover that Amy’s heart is not just a donor’s gift but a coveted prize in a deadly game controlled by criminals willing to kill to keep their secrets hidden, revealing the lengths to which people will go to secure life-saving transplants. Amidst the danger, they face moral dilemmas and personal risks, pushing them to their limits as they strive to protect innocent lives and dismantle a powerful criminal network.

Review:

“Change of Heart” by Cristina LePort is a gripping, fast-paced thriller that unearths the dark world of organ trafficking, exploring the moral and ethical dilemmas surrounding life-saving transplants. The story follows Det. Kirk Miner, FBI Agent Jack Mulville, and Special Agent Charlotte Bloom, as they investigate this unusual case and bring their own unique skills and motivations to the pursuit of justice. As they uncover a network of illegal organ trade, they are forced to navigate dangerous alliances and face tough choices about what is right and what is necessary for survival.

The narrative is full of suspense, where the stakes grow higher with every twist. With relatable characters that are well-developed, their personal stakes—whether it’s a search for redemption, vengeance, or justice—add emotional depth to the story. Special Agent Charlotte Bloom is naive but determined to make it as an FBI agent, even if it puts her life in danger. By exploring the lengths to which people will go for a lifesaving transplant, it is thought-provoking and disturbing. The plot twist at the end took me by surprise but it explains so much.

Right from the beginning, I was hooked by the descriptive language used to describe the damage done to Amy’s head by the bullet: “The bullet carrying Amy Winter’s name whooshed through her hair at a speed of fifteen hundred feet per second, burned a jagged hole into her smooth 24-year-old flesh, burst through the thin layer of her temporal muscle, and shattered the temporal bone.” The author’s medical knowledge gives it an authentic voice.

Overall, “Change of Heart” is a compelling and intense medical thriller that will resonate with anyone interested in the intersection of crime, morality, and the human condition. It explores the themes of power and corruption, family, and identity while tackling complex issues like the value of human life and the gray ethical areas in medical practices, making readers question the price of survival. I recommend it for fans of medical dramas and suspenseful thrillers by authors such as Robin Cook, Patricia Cornwell, and Michael Palmer.

“A jagged, irregular line, like a drawing by a shaking hand. Her heart wouldn’t beat or squeeze any longer. Her heart muscle would just wiggle – flaccid, without power. She was going to die.”

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Groovy Vibes and Twangy Tunes: Joel Timmons’ Psychedelic Surf Country

Joel Timmons takes bad dreams and turns them into rock and roll with new single End of the Empire from his forthcoming new album Psychedelic Surf Country. Photo: Joel Timmons

Charleston, SC – Joel Timmons is a dynamic songwriter, musician, and journeyman. Growing up on Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, Timmons developed a deep connection to both music and the ocean, influences that permeate his artistic work. His early years were marked by a passion for surfing and a love for music, cultivated in part by his mother, a photographer and park ranger at Fort Moultrie, a vibrant local arts scene, and a close community of aspiring young musicians. The lead vocalist and guitarist for Sol Driven Train, founded by Timmons and his friends during college in 2000, Timmons also plays guitar with Maya de Vitry and makes music with his life-partner and wife, Shelby Means, under the name Sally & George. Psychedelic Surf Country, out February 7, marks the long-time collaborator’s first solo-work. (IV PR, 2025)

Within the patchwork of Joel Timmons’ debut solo album, Psychedelic Surf Country, lies a kaleidoscopic view of the career sideman and band leader’s striking self-awareness. Both in lyricism and musicality, Timmons has adopted an easy-going and reflective view of the world, creating unencumbered and accessible songs from even the most left-field subjects like lighting old Christmas trees ablaze, the highway patrol K9 who paid his band a visit between tour stops, and the tight jeans and Stetson hats that took over his former neighborhood. But it’s in the heavier subject matter, like his latest single, End of the Empire, where Timmons’ upbeat musical attitude shines.

“My wife, Shelby Means, started writing this song on a small boat in the Virgin Islands while surfers rode waves across a nearby reef,” remembers Timmons. It sounds picturesque, but the initial idea brought about an undercurrent of influence from a wildly different place. “My recurring dreams of doom and nightmares of being hunted by an unknown predator—as well as a sense of apocalyptic loss—figured into the co-write.” Ethereal and dreamy from the onset, End of the Empire floats between images of inescapable crashing waves and desperate hiding, looking for escape, but it might take listeners a couple of passes to recognize these as the song itself feels uplifting and borderline anthemic; a testament to Timmons’ positive spin. With the help of Psychedelic Surf Country producer Maya de Vitry, End of the Empire turns into a huge wash of harmonies and a wall of rhythm section. “The recording ended up being a rocker,” says Timmons, “and the guitar is howling.”

Fans can stream and purchase End of the Empire, check out the premiere on Glide Magazine, listen to Timmons’ previously-released singles, The Swimming Song, Guitars, Guns, and Pickup Trucks, Turbo, and The Bullfighter featuring Shovels & Rope’s Cary Ann Hearst, at their respective links, and pre-order or pre-save Psychedelic Surf Country ahead of its February 7th release.

Cowboys, Romance, and Frontier Life: ‘Oklahoma!’ Takes the Stage at the Camille

‘Oklahoma!’ is now playing at the Camille Playhouse in Brownsville. Photo: Sandra Cruz

Now playing at the Camille Playhouse in Brownsville is “Oklahoma!” – a timeless American musical that combines a compelling story with vibrant music, offering a celebration of frontier life and the complexities of love and community. It features a score by Rodgers and Hammerstein, including unforgettable songs like “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'” and “People Will Say We’re in Love.” Set in the early 1900s, it follows the lives of two rival groups—farmers and cowboys—in the Oklahoma Territory, with romance blossoming between the spirited Laurey Williams and the charming Curly McLain.

From the brilliant minds of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, the Camille takes a trip to the turn of the 20th century with “Oklahoma!” With the rivalry between local farmers and cowboys, the setting of this show is full of conflict, but it’s also a love story of a farm girl and her choice between a cowboy and a farmhand. (Camille Playhouse, 2025)

Tickets are $25 for ages 3 and up and are available online or avoid the service charge and buy them at the box office. The lobby opens 30 minutes before the curtain and seating opens 30 minutes before curtain. Seating is on a first come, first serve basis.

Cast includes:

Brandon Binder – Curly
Leah Hollingshead – Laurey
Daniel Ramirez – Will Parker
Grecia Ortiz – Ado Annie Carnes
Valentina Capistran – Aunt Eller

Opening night on Friday was a wonderful start to the Camille’s presentation of this foot-stomping musical. The narrative strikes a balance between lighthearted moments and deeper themes and explores issues like jealousy, societal norms, and personal independence. The character-driven plot shines with its dynamic, well-developed roles, with excellent portrayals of Laurey by Leah Hollingshead and Curly by Brandon Binder. Their relationship stands at the forefront of the emotional core. A standout performance comes courtesy of Dean McElyea (Jud Fry) during the melancholy “Lonely Run” where Jud sings about his longing for a woman of his own and showcases the depth of the character. The lively choreography, paired with the energetic ensemble, brings the world of Oklahoma to life at the local level. Outstanding performances all around.

Despite some of its dated views on gender roles, “Oklahoma!” remains an important part of American musical theatre history. Its infectious energy, catchy tunes, and memorable characters continue to captivate audiences, making it a must-see for lovers of classic musicals. Do yourself a favor and stop by the Camille to experience this magical performance at its very best and discover the talent that Brownsville has to offer. Thrills, Chills, and Heart-Stopping Moments: Experience Never Have I Ever

The thriller Never Have I Ever is now available for streaming. Courtesy photo, used with permission.

When it comes to movies, thrillers captivate moviegoers by blending suspense, mystery, and intense emotional conflict. These films often explore the complexities of the human mind, where perception and reality blur, leaving audiences on edge. The tension stems from characters’ internal struggles, psychological manipulation, and unexpected twists, which keep viewers guessing and engaged. Rather than relying on gore or action, these thrillers build fear through atmosphere, ambiguity, and mind games, tapping into universal anxieties. The appeal lies in the challenge they present, including trying to outwit the story, questioning what’s real, and experiencing a sense of unease long after the credits roll.

But his day goes from bad to worse when a variety of strange things start happening. From simply losing his wallet to seemingly having multiple break-ins to his home. Then a chance encounter whilst drowning his sorrows sends his day in directions he couldn’t possibly have anticipated.

Elephant & Piggie Take the Stage: Magik Theatre’s Play Brings Mo Willems’ Characters to Life

Celebrate your best friendships with Magik Theatre’s hilarious Mo Willem’s musical Elephant & Piggie’s ‘We Are in a play!’ Photo: Magik Theatre, used with permission.

San Antonio, TX – Invite your friends to a different kind of play date with Magik Theatre’s Elephant & Piggie’s ‘We Are in a Play!’ running February 1 – March 23. Gerald the Elephant and Piggie the Pig are “bestus” friends in this rollicking musical based on Mo Willems’ beloved, award-winning “Elephant and Piggie” books. (Magik Theatre, 2025)

When the duo gets invited to a party hosted by The Squirrelles—a trio of fun-loving, singing squirrels—it seems like the makings of a perfect day. But Gerald is worried this big opportunity might create big problems for their friendship. Piggie does not share her elephant pal’s concern, in fact, she’s even happier and more excited than usual. In order for both the friends to have a good time, they must work (and sing and dance) together to overcome obstacles and help each other on a day when anything is possible.

“Gerald and Piggie couldn’t be more different—one is cautious and thoughtful, while the other is playful and impulsive,” says director Jenny Lavery. “But their bond shows us that differences don’t divide us, instead they can bring us closer together.” Lavery directs Ethan Hart (Gerald) and Sami Serrano (Piggie), as well as Amy Bouquet, Lexie Williams, and Hannah Rodriguez as the Squirrelles. Sarah Bailey serves as musical director and Tanesha Payne is the production’s choreographer for the vibrant musical numbers.

Audiences ages 3 and up will get a kick out of this funny, heartwarming story of two friends navigating life’s unexpected occasions. Throughout the musical’s run, Magik Theatre is providing plenty of ways to have a day out just as exciting and special as the one Piggie and Gerald embark on. From an opening night party in Hemisfair Park with cookies and cocoa and kids crafts, to add-on experiences like a post-show backstage tour with the cast and pop-up ice cream socials on the weekends, there are plenty of ways to enhance the family fun.

Aspiring young actors can even learn what it takes to perform on the stage with this season’s new Magik Monday, a series of workshops inspired by the current performance and designed to spark creativity and build confidence. February’s Elephant and Piggie workshop will introduce students to acting through exciting games and exercises, with the chance to rehearse short scenes as well.

With the recent opening of a dedicated quiet room, Magik continues its commitment to making theatre accessible to everyone. The quiet room, which officially opened in late 2024, includes cozy, specialized furniture, calming decor, a TV broadcasting the current performance in real time, and sensory toys to allow overwhelmed or overstimulated audience members to easily take a break from the show without missing out on the rest of the theatre experience. The new space adds to other efforts Magik has made to become a Kulture City certified Sensory Inclusive Venue, as well as its ongoing special performances to accommodate those with special needs and financial constraints.

For family fun, lots of laughs, and catchy tunes, Elephant & Piggie’s ‘We Are in a Play!’ is truly a perfect way to have your own perfect day. Elephant & Piggie’s ‘We Are in a Play!’ is based on the Mo Willems books of the same name, published by Hyperion Books, with book and lyrics by Willems and music by Deborah Wicks La Puma, presented by special arrangement with Music Theatre International.

Last Leg of the Human Table: Cloakroom’s Masterpiece of Introspection and Atmosphere

Cloakroom, L-R Doyle Martin (Lyrics, Guitar), Tim Remis (Drums), Bobby Markos (Bass), announces new album on Closed Casket and shares ‘Bad Larry’ video and single. Photo: Vin Romero, used with permission.

For Cloakroom, an American shoegaze band from Northwest Indiana, the world of modernity is in polycrisis and America has lost its soul. Narrative fetishism is all too usual of a literary mechanism for Cloakroom. If you listen closely you can hear the concern; not just for the teetering social structure but for what it means to be human and the high cost of the human experience. (another side, 2025)

The Indiana three return next month with their next studio album, Last Leg of the Human Table – the follow up to 2022’s post-apocalyptic space western Dissolution Wave, and label debut for Closed Casket Activities. Each song showcases Cloakroom’s genre-bending capabilities and seemingly vast array of influences; whether it be the sampling of the post-disco Detroit group Was (Not Was) or the lifted NASA recording of the humming of Saturn’s rings. Recorded in December of 2023 at Electrical Audio in Chicago and Rec Room Recording in Des Plaines, Illinois, engineer Zac Montez (Whirr, Turnover) aided in smoothing out the rough and turning up the quiet.

Last Leg of the Human Table sees its release on February 28 via Closed Casket. Fans can pre-order/pre-save here.

Pop, shoegaze, doom, post-punk, folk only scratch the surface on Cloakroom’s shortest yet most essential release to date. Its title Last Leg of the Human Table may sound sardonic in its nature, but this group has always found some wonder in the scurrying chaos of modern life. In 37 minutes, the album imbues a sense of responsibility to the listener as if one leg were to falter, the whole table will fall.

Cloakroom shares the lead single and video “Bad Larry.” Lyricist and guitarist Doyle Martin explains, “It was written about a fabled character out of folklore like ‘Diamond Joe’ composed by Baldwin ‘Butch’ Hawes.. if that’s who even wrote that song first. Bad Larry roams free and wants for nothing; living a life of experience and lives by his own rules and dying on his own terms; a life to vilify or envy.”

After wrapping an extensive North American tour with Full of Hell last month, Cloakroom has announced a special Chicago album release show happening April 12 at Empty Bottle. More dates and news to come.

The DoSeum fortifies its membership through continual renewal of exhibition themes and educational events. The museum has renovated four permanent exhibit galleries and made updates to many individual exhibits, ensuring fresh experiences for repeat visitors. The people powering The DoSeum’s Success

At the heart of The DoSeum’s success is its exceptional team of 80 staff members, including an Education team with unparalleled expertise in the museum industry. Featuring former classroom teachers and professionals with advanced degrees in Education and STEM-related fields, this talented group conducts innovative, TEKS-aligned programs, leads engaging holiday and summer camps, and provides inspired professional development for area educators. The DoSeum’s educational offerings, meticulously crafted and rooted in proven frameworks, incorporate elements of risky play to foster growth and development. Cruising into the Next Decade

The DoSeum is poised for an exciting future, having solidified a new strategic plan for the next 10 years. With support from a generous grant from The Meadows Foundation, the museum has invested in research and robust evaluation to strengthen its educational program design and outcomes. This research will inform The DoSeum’s focus on growth for sustainable placemaking, fully integrated experience design, exemplary informal STEM education, and engaging learners of all profiles.

The museum plans to introduce new, innovative themes to its camps, weekly workshops, and other programs. Among these additions is a focus on ceramics, providing children with hands-on experiences in this tactile art form. These new programs reflect The DoSeum’s commitment to continually evolving its curriculum to engage young learners in diverse and exciting ways. By blending retrospection with innovation, The DoSeum aims to build on its successful foundation while adapting to the changing interests and needs of San Antonio’s youth.

The DoSeum’s commitment to growth and innovation is evidenced in its plans for 2025 exhibits. On March 1, The DoSeum will unveil “Uniquely Us: Understanding Race and Building Unity,” its second internally developed traveling exhibition. This project, in development since 2020, has benefited from extensive community input and national support. Following this, “Emotions at Play,” a hands-on exhibition, based on Disney Pixar’s “Inside Out”, will focus on social-emotional learning and is set to open on May 24. The museum’s celebration continues into fall and winter with a special birthday edition of the Artist-in-Residence exhibition.

Finally, the community is invited to Save the Date for June 6th for The DoSeum Birthday Bash where admission will be free all day to the community.
