Easter is a cherished holiday celebrated worldwide, symbolizing renewal, hope, and resurrection. For Christians, it marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ, making it one of the most significant religious events of the year. Beyond its spiritual meaning, Easter brings people together in joyful celebration. Traditions vary globally—from sunrise church services to colorful egg hunts, festive meals, and spring-themed decorations. Many enjoy brunches filled with seasonal dishes, while others gather with family for large dinners. In some cultures, parades, dances, and special pastries mark the occasion. Regardless of tradition, Easter serves as a time of reflection, unity, and new beginnings.

If you’re in the San Antonio area, or plan to be during the upcoming holiday weekend, here are some ways you can celebrate Easter in the Alamo City. Celebrate Fiesta Season: Magik Theatre Presents Two Bilingual Productions

Magik Theatre presents ¡Lotería: Game On! and Tomás and the Library Lady. Photo: Magik Theatre, used with permission.

(San Antonio, TX) – Spring is in the air in San Antonio and at Magik Theatre, where children and their families are invited to celebrate the city’s rich cultural heritage with two bilingual productions for Spanish and English language learners and speakers of all levels. (Magik Theatre, 2025)

Magik’s mainstage play ¡Lotería: Game On! closes out the beloved children’s theatre’s milestone 30th season from May 3 to June 1, 2025. Additionally, Magik is pleased to present Tomás and the Library Lady as its Spring 2025 touring production for regional schools, community organizations, and special events. Both plays move seamlessly between English and Spanish dialogue and feature traditions or historic figures dear to San Antonio’s Hispanic community, wrapped in Magik’s signature creative fun.

Launching on the last weekend of Fiesta, ¡Lotería: Game On! is a great way to party down with little ones, complete with an opening night celebration on May 3 in Hemisfair Park. Performances later in the season have plenty of fun in store, too, with Magik’s backstage experience add-on, allowing guests a glimpse behind the curtain during a cast meet-and-greet and guided tour as they savor a post-show paleta.

Written by Mabelle Reynoso for audiences ages 6+, ¡Lotería: Game On! brings the competitive fun of the classic Mexican card game to the stage in a whimsical, immersive experience. Blending fantasy, humor, and cultural traditions, the bilingual story follows Mexican-American siblings Sam and Kris as they work together to rescue their father from the mysterious realm of Lotería. When they brush off their dad’s attempts to spend quality time together, Sam and Kris have no idea he’s about to disappear through a pillow-fort portal to magical Lotería land. During their quest to bring their dad home, the pair encounter characters based on familiar Lotería cards like La Rana, El Gallo and La Mano, and must cooperate and think fast to outwit Lotería’s rules.

The set design by Lucian Hernandez draws viewers into Lotería’s mystery, while Yesi Tafur’s costumes reflect the cards’ iconic visual language. Lucero Garcia and Maryann Valerio play Sam and Kris respectively, while Gabriel Itzcoatl Luera takes on the role of Dad. They deftly navigate a script that intentionally weaves together both Spanish and English.

JOIN MAGIK ON THE ROAD WITH Tomás and the Library Lady

Tomás and the Library Ladyisbased on the inspiring true story of Crystal City-native Tomás Rivera as written by author and poet Pat Mora and adapted for the stage by José Cruz González. The bilingual play focuses on the special friendship between Tomás, the son of migrant farm workers, and the kind librarian who helps him unlock a love of reading. Together, they discover the transformative power of books, which eventually propels Tomás into a groundbreaking career in higher education. The real-life Tomás became the first Mexican-American chancellor of a University of California campus, and many of his family members are still in the South Texas area. His daughter, Ileana Rivera Liberatore, even taught Magik’s managing director Mel Zarb-Cousin in high school.

It’s no surprise, then, that Tomás and the Library Lady is already popular around town: the San Antonio Public Library and the NCAA’s literacy initiative Read to the Final Fourhave both booked several performances of the play, which is available to visit campuses and community centers from April 7 through July 20th then again in the fall, September 8 through October 12th in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month. Each production offers TEKS-based digital resource guides and an after-show Q&A session between audience and cast, with optional workshops led by Magik Theatre Teaching Artists. More information about Magik on the Road is available online.

Both productions’ creative, heartwarming approaches to our region’s unique culture make them ideal for celebrating the end of the semester, San Antonio’s most vibrant season, and the promise of summer fun. Help Magik send off its legendary 30th season in style!

“These joyful, high-energy shows celebrate the power of storytelling, the resilience of family, and the traditions that shape our lives. Each play reminds us that family is not just about where we come from, but the stories and traditions that keep us connected.”— Anthony Runfola, Magik Theatre Artistic Director

SAN ANTONIO, TX – St. Paul Square is thrilled to announce the expansion of their Sunday community programming, now known as “Sundays at the Square,” taking place weekly each Sunday from 10a.m. to 2p.m. near downtown San Antonio. (St. Paul Square, 2025)

Following an outpouring of positive feedback from the community during the first few weeks of this family-friendly event series that featured an outdoor Farmers Market and morning yoga, organizers at the historic St. Paul Square have partnered with a pair of local small businesses – Juntos San Antonio and Mobile Om – to elevate the Sunday event series for San Antonians.

With support from Juntos San Antonio, the expanded outdoor market will feature an even greater variety of San Antonio-based vendors and pop-up shops offering seasonal organic produce; artisanal food; baked goods and pastries; coffee, tea, and specialty drinks; locally handcrafted goods; and more. Attendees of all ages can also enjoy live music as they stroll through the district’s charming courtyard, while leashed dogs are more than welcome to join in the Sunday festivities.

Local yoga enthusiasts can enjoy donation-based, all-level friendly classes hosted by Mobile Om, a San Antonio based yoga collective who have been uplifting the city’s local wellness scene for over a decade. Weekend classes will take place each Sunday at 11a.m. inside The Spire, one of St Paul Square’s many historic event spaces. Classes are available on a first come, first served basis based on venue capacity.

This expanded weekly showcase advances St. Paul Square’s mission to transform the historic district into a vibrant destination for food, entertainment, and cultural arts, by fostering community connections and supporting local businesses in San Antonio and its surrounding markets.

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – El Tigre is thrilled to open the doors of its new coffee shop and café to the general public at a brand new location within St. Paul Square, San Antonio’s historic downtown district that’s evolving into a world-class entertainment and cultural arts destination. (El Tigre, 2025)

Located at 123 Heiman Street, near the intersection of Heiman Street and Hoefgen Avenue, this new brick-and-mortar location at St. Paul Square follows in the footsteps of the beloved flagship coffee shop located in East Austin that opened in 2019.

Business hours at El Tigre at St. Paul Square are 7a.m. to 3p.m. CT daily, where patrons can look forward to a curated menu of specialty drinks from lattes to espressos to cappuccinos to drip coffee, matchas, cold brews, teas, mushroom cacao, and more.

For the food menu, patrons can enjoy breakfast sandwiches, avocado toast, and pastries in the morning with salads, bowls, and sandwich options available for lunch. Fans should stay tuned as this new location will soon roll out an updated menu in the coming weeks.

At the new El Tigre, the team will continue to work with all-natural and organic producers from around the world who specialize in sustainable and ethical farming practices – notably from Brazil and Honduras – while planting roots in the Alamo City to continue their mission of serving Texans through high-quality coffee and warm hospitality.

“We welcome all of San Antonio to visit El Tigre, and experience what makes our café so special. It’s not just about the quality coffee we serve, but the community we look to build – one that is inspired by creativity and unity.” –  El Tigre’s owner and Dreamers & Doers Hospitality’s founder Tatanka Guerrero

El Tigre at St. Paul Square will continue to be led by local resident and acclaimed restaurateur Tatanka Guerrero through his independently-owned Dreamers and Doers Hospitality Group, where his team will look to work with local producers to uplift the local San Antonio community while tapping international organic producers who share their same commitment to quality, community, and sustainability.

As a proud Chilean-turned-Texan, Guerrero first gained national prominence following his first restaurant Al Campo in Marfa which was preceded by other successful projects in Miami and Los Angeles. Most recently, Guerrero opened the intimate Oaxacan-and-Japanese design-inspired cocktail bar Trona in Austin’s growing Eastside neighborhood, where it quickly grew to prominence as one of the city’s most sought-after and well-designed bars.

Within Dreamers & Doers, other notable Texas concepts include the aforementioned coffee shop El Tigre; wine shop and bar Cork & Screw; tattoo shop Slowpoke Marfa; alfresco food court Camp East; and food truck court Arbor Food Park.
