Celebrating Local: Food, Music, and Fun at Pullman Market’s First Birthday Bash

Pullman Market, the 53,000-square-foot culinary hub at Pearl in San Antonio, will celebrate its one-year anniversary with a family-friendly block party on Saturday, May 3, from 1p.m. – 5p.m. The free event highlights the market’s mission of bringing local land to local hands with food from award-winning local restaurants, live music, family activities from DoSeum, and more. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the San Antonio Food Bank. (Pullman Market, 2025)

The celebration will feature dishes for sale from numerous local restaurants, including The Jerk Shack, Freight Fried Chicken, Ladino, Leche de Tigre, Mixtli, Pharm Table, Southerleigh, Supper and Pullman Market’s own Mezquite.

Pullman Market in the Pearl District, created by the Emmer & Rye Hospitality Group, opened on April 23, 2024. In its first year, it has become a community culinary hub featuring a specialty grocer, five quick-service eateries and four full-service restaurants – Fife & Farro, Mezquite, Isidore and Nicosi. Committed to sustainability and supporting local producers, Pullman Market sources all products within 150 miles of San Antonio, fostering an ecosystem that connects farmers, chefs and consumers.

Since opening, Pullman Market has been named to Progressive Grocer’s “Outstanding Independents” list for its commitment to local connections, elevated grocery standards and integration of chef-driven concepts. A Night at the Chef’s Table: four San Antonio Chefs come together for a good cause

Enjoy an extraordinary evening with four acclaimed San Antonio chefs and James Beard Award nominees on Wednesday August 31 when they join forces to collaborate on one unforgettable dinner. This diverse culinary lineup will prepare a special four-course dinner to kick off Hunger Action Month in September, an initiative dedicated to raising awareness about food insecurity in San Antonio. With a portion of event proceeds going to the San Antonio Food Bank, guests can help fight hunger and feed hope together.

For one-night only, the highly anticipated restaurant from Emmer & Rye Hospitality Group, Ladino will be hosting a sneak peek ticketed dinner in the Elephant Cellar at Hotel Emma on Tuesday, April 19 at 6:30p.m. Executive Chef of Ladino, Berty Richter is partnering with Chef John Brand to create a pre-fix menu featuring some of the dishes that will be at Ladino, which is slated to open in summer 2022. Taco Cabana to donate to Texas food banks this holiday season

This holiday season, Taco Cabana will donate a total of $25,000 to area food banks across the state to help feed Texans in need. Following the sale of TC’s popular Halloween Taco Treats For A Cause coupon booklets, which featured five free classic bean and cheese tacos, 100% of proceeds will be distributed to major food banks in Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Dallas Fort-Worth, and El Paso. North Texas Food Bank

The North Texas Food Bank (NTFB) is a top-ranked non-profit hunger-relief organization that sources, packages and distributes food through a network of more than 200 Partner Agencies across 13 North Texas counties. The organization also provides food to children, seniors and families through various direct-delivery programs, including mobile pantries. In its last fiscal year, the NTFB provided access to more than 125 million nutritious meals, a 28% percent increase over the prior year. In response to the ongoing elevated hunger crisis, the organization has launched a $500 million campaign, Nourish North Texas, to provide more food for today and hope for tomorrow by addressing the root causes of food insecurity.

El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank is El Paso’s only food bank and a member of Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger relief network. In 2020, El Pasoans Fighting Hunger distributed 139.7 million pounds of food, making us the third-largest food bank in the nation in terms of distribution, behind Houston and Los Angeles. EPFH commits to making sure no one goes hungry.

Taco Cabana, a subsidiary of YTC Enterprises, LLC, was founded in 1978. The brand specializes in Tex-Mex-inspired food including enchiladas, fajitas, quesadillas, flautas, burritos, tacos, flour tortillas and a selection of made-from-scratch salsas and sauces. Restaurants feature open-display cooking, a selection of beer and $2 tequila margaritas, patio dining, drive-thru windows, curbside pick-up and delivery. As of November 1, 2021, Taco Cabana operates 142 company-owned restaurants in Texas.

After a one year hiatus, Taste of the Dominion, San Antonio’s favorite restaurant tasting, returns on Thursday, October 7, 2021 from 6p.m. to 9p.m. Sponsored and held annually at the exclusive Dominion Country Club, the event features more than 20 restaurants, alcohol tastings, and a silent auction – all benefitting the San Antonio Food Bank. Whataburger raises money for local families in need

Orange Spirit Week is Whataburger’s annual tradition of honoring its legacy while giving back to the communities it serves. This year, in honor of its 71st anniversary, Whataburger partnered with Feeding America® to help provide more than three million meals through local food banks across Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Following its first-ever systemwide fundraiser benefitting Feeding America®, Whataburger is giving $31,624 raised in the San Antonio area to the San Antonio Food Bank to help fight hunger in the community. The local gift is part of more than $300,000 that Whataburger customers donated across its 10-state footprint during the company’s Orange Spirit Week celebration. Customers who donated $1 during the fundraiser received a free Whataburger coupon for their generosity. Funds raised benefitted the communities where they were given. It is all part of Whataburger Feeding Student Success, the company’s signature community program operating at the intersection of food insecurity and education and focusing on helping students at all levels of education achieve their goals and dreams.

The magic of Whataburger started on August 8, 1950, in a tiny burger stand in Corpus Christi, Texas. An entrepreneur named Harmon Dobson set out to build a burger so delicious that customers would take that first bite and say, “What a burger!” Today, Whataburger is known for delicious burgers, big flavor, and the brand’s pride in taking care of its guests, communities, and employees, known as Family Members. Orange Spirit Week celebrates its founding and the foundation for success that Dobson created.

San Antonio Food Bank needs volunteers for Hurricane Ida food relief effort

The San Antonio Food Bank received an urgent request on Thursday to send six truckloads of food to counties in Louisiana impacted by Hurricane Ida. Volunteers of all ages and abilities are needed on Friday, Saturday, and Tuesday to help prepare the relief effort. Volunteer work will take place at the Food Bank’s main facility just west of downtown. COVID safety protocols are in place (masking, social distancing). Sweet Paris Crêperie & Café celebrates two years in San Antonio

Sweet Paris Crêperie & Café located on Main Street at The Shops at La Cantera is celebrating its second anniversary in San Antonio through community give back. The restaurant’s “Eat Here, Feed There” program will benefit two charities it partnered with during its grand opening – the San Antonio Food Bank and Culinaria. (Sweet Paris Crêperie & Café, 2021)

As part of “Eat Here, Feed There,” Sweet Paris will donate five percent of all crêpes sold to the charities during the month of September. The San Antonio Food Bank, which serves Southwest Texas, provides food for 120,000 individuals weekly – a number that reflects the pandemic’s local impact. Sweet Paris also partners with the San Antonio Food Bank year-round with an ongoing campaign to donate fourteen cents per participating crêpes sold to provide one meal to a child in need. The not-for-profit Culinaria promotes San Antonio as a premiere food and wine destination through year-round events including Restaurant Weeks, Chef Swaps, Hallowine Run, and Food Trails.

San Antonio Food Bank needs summer volunteers

Eric Cooper, President & CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank, is asking community members of all ages to join the Food Bank in a summer of service. The Food Bank is facing an urgent crisis for volunteers as it ramps up to meet the meal needs of a record number of kids who may face hunger this summer. (San Antonio Food Bank, 2021)

Volunteers are needed to help prepare meals in the Food Bank’s three kitchens, as well as to help pack food boxes in their main facility warehouse and work mobile food distributions. Information on dates, time, age restrictions, and more can be found at the Food Bank’s volunteer website.

An additional service opportunity is available for those seeking full-time service this summer via the Food Bank’s partnership with AmeriCorps and Equal Heart. The Food Bank is recruiting individuals to serve as AmeriCorps Members to reduce community hunger and provide engagement for youth. In exchange for their service, AmeriCorps Members receive a bi-weekly living allowance and an end-of-term education award.

Applicants are encouraged to apply early as applications are considered on a rolling basis until all positions are filled. Qualified applicants are screened and interviewed by both Equal Heart  and the Food Bank before any formal offer is made. Application information is available online.

Black Restaurant Week San Antonio 2021

Black Restaurant Week San Antonio (BRWSA), Tim Duncan Foundation and Spurs Give are joining efforts to support the San Antonio Food Bank through donations and a matching effort. BRWSA is February 21-28 with more than 30 Black-owned restaurants, food trucks, and businesses participating this year. (San Antonio Food Bank, 2021)

Each restaurant will have a featured special on the menu that will serve as a give-back for the week and for each one purchased, BRWSA participants will give back 21 meals to kids and seniors facing hunger. In addition, the Tim Duncan Foundation and Spurs Give have each pledged $100,000 to the Food Bank, funding 1.4 million meals to help feed those in need.

As the COVID-19 pandemic stretches into its second year, families continue to face hunger, many for the first time. This partnership strives to help feed those with the greatest need, while also raising awareness for locally Black-owned restaurants to help them thrive during this time. The campaign to raise $2.5 million is still going strong until February 28 and anyone wishing to donate may do so online.

Black Restaurant Week San Antonio was founded in 2019 to focus support on and highlight Black owned businesses and Black professionals in the culinary field in San Antonio. The goal is to not only bring awareness but to celebrate “Cuisine, Culture and Community” through an assortment of events and charitable giving.
