‘The Snowy Day’ opens at the Magik Theatre

‘The Snowy Day’ opens at the Magik Theatre on Saturday, February 12, 2022. Photo: Magik Theatre, used with permission.

The enchanting moments of a child’s world will be lovingly and humorously displayed when Magik Theatre presents ‘The Snowy Day and Other Stories’ by Ezra Jack Keats from February 12 to March 19, 2022. The musical play will be adapted for the stage by Jerome Hairston and produced by special arrangement with Plays for New Audiences, a division of Children’s Theatre Company. (Magik Theatre, 2022)

Drawing from three of Keats’ beloved works—”The Snowy Day,” “Whistle for Willie,” “Googles!” and “A Letter to Amy”—the production celebrates childhood joys and the challenges of growing up. All of the stories capture the special moment of eye-opening discovery and innocent wonder shared by any child delighted by a snowy landscape.

Surprises abound as Keats’ treasured characters come to life when they experience the magic and boundless possibilities. Peter discovers new and unexpected things every day while witnessing his first snowfall. He and his friends romp and play, starting snowball fights and making snow angels. Experience the wonder as Peter discovers the joy of whistling for the first time. Marvel at the surprise of discovering old treasures in the outdoors. Share in the excitement of writing the perfect letter to a friend. And much more.

‘The Snowy Day’ will feature an all African-American local cast. Keats received the 1963 Caldecott Medal for his collage artwork in this work, which was the first picture book with an African-American protagonist to win a major children’s book award.

The play, which is recommended for ages 3 and up, will be presented every Saturday and Sunday from February 12 to March 19 at Magik Theatre in Hemisfair, 420 S. Alamo in San Antonio. Performance times vary. Programs and dates are subject to change.

Tickets are now on sale. Single tickets are on sale now for $25 per adult and children $20 for ages 3 to 17, educators, military, students and seniors. Children under 2 must sit on an adult’s lap. If a child under 2 uses a seat, even a car or booster seat, the patron must pay for a general-admission ticket. Group rates are available to parties of eight or more people.

Flex passes can be used for any school and public performance. For 10 tickets, the cost is $170 ($17 per ticket, a savings of 32 percent off single ticket prices) and for 20 tickets, the cost is $300 ($15 per ticket, a savings of 40 percent off single ticket prices).

Rescheduled Magik Theatre Performances and Social Distancing Practices:
The originally scheduled performance dates for The Snowy Day of January 22 through February 22, were altered to February 12 to March 19, as a safety precaution due to rising local cases of COVID-19.

Magik Theatre also plans to move its production of ‘Selena Maria Sings’ from March 4 to later this fall. Further details to follow.

Magik Theatre will continue to practice its COVID-19 safety policy and update its website and social media accounts accordingly, following the guidelines provided by The City of San Antonio, the Texas Health and Human Services Department, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Magik Theatre’s current safety protocols include masks for everyone over the age of 2 upon entering the building.

Geneviève Racette announces bilingual LP Satellite

Québécois singer-songwriter Geneviève Racette announces her third full-length album Satellite. The bilingual LP will be available March 18. Courtesy photo, used with permission.

Montreal-born and raised singer-songwriter Geneviève Racette was destined to find herself on stage and in recording studios from day one. Her mom taught her piano at home and her dad was passionate about all things music; her sister was a pianist and vocalist and her brother a guitarist and trumpet player. Racette developed a healthy love for music at home and then decided to refine those skills as an adult, and the personal and critical results have been resounding. On March 18, 2022, Racette is due to release her third full-length album, Satellite. (Geneviève Racette, 2021)

Adding to an ever-developing and highly-praised bilingual catalog, Satellite is a 9-song collection, delivering honest stories of self-discovery and reflection through the cycle of love. Filled with intimate vocals, lush instruments, and expressive harmonies, Racette’s new album evokes moments of love, heartbreak, healing, forgiveness, and ultimately, falling in love again. Racette has shared two singles from the album thus far; the reverb-drenched, earnest longing of “Maybe” and “Les adieux,” which translates to “Farewells” in English. Fans can hear both singles now at this link and pre-order or pre-save Satellite ahead of its March 18 release right here.

In addition to the announcement of Satellite, Racette is hitting the road again in 2022. Dates in both Canada and the States have been announced, including a rescheduled opening slot for City and Colour’s sold-out Montreal show on February 13.

Continuously receiving praise for her music, she has already been nominated and received several prestigious prizes including, Emerging Artist of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Award (2020). Geneviève is also recognized by established artists in the industry for her talents. Geneviève’s growing popularity is also noticeable on streaming platforms and web radios with her first full-length French album “Les aurores boréales” (2016).

Geneviève has an undeniable love of the stage, in 2019 she conquered over a hundred Canadian concert venues. In the last two years, Racette has broadened her performing territory, from mostly Québec venues to other Canadian provinces Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and the Maritimes, as the headliner in each of the tours. With live music, dinner and dancing under the stars, kick up your heels with your Valentine or grab your posse and enjoy a night out with friends surrounded by the beauty of the fantastic bronze sculptures and lush greenery that create the perfect getaway on the banks of the River Walk. Doors open at 6:30p.m. with music, drinks, and food until 8:30p.m. (Briscoe Western Art Museum, 2022)

Tickets are $5 per person for museum members, $15 per person for non-members, and include two free beer/soda/water tickets, with beer generously provided by Ranger Creek Brewery. Adding a sweet note for Valentine’s, each ticket also includes a complimentary chocolate covered strawberry.

Guests can also partake in the Briscoe’s annual tradition of penning a Pony Express Love Letter to be hand delivered by the museum as a tip of the hat to the historic horse-mounted riders mail delivery system. This year, the museum will be hand delivering letters to local frontline and healthcare workers. Guests can also pen a mad-lib to show their love to their honey or their friends. In addition to Sips and Sounds, visitors can stop by the museum during regular hours to craft letters of encouragement, thanks and support for our healthcare heroes, February 4 through 13.

The museum’s McNutt Sculpture Garden offers the perfect respite during any River Walk visit. With the lights of downtown in the background, the garden becomes magical at night, making it the perfect spot for a date night or a night out with friends. If weather conditions turn frosty, the event will overlook the River Walk from the Briscoe’s Jack Guenther Pavilion.

The Briscoe’s collection of Western art and artifacts highlights the stories of the West through visual art. Collection highlights include Santa Anna’s sword, works by Frederic Remington, Pancho Villa’s last known saddle, a fantastic Alamo diorama and artifacts, contemporary and historic paintings and sculptures, as well as cowboy and Native American relics, weapons and photography. The museum is located on the south end of the River Walk, near the Arneson River Theatre and La Villita, with convenient parking at the Riverbend Garage directly adjacent to the museum or one of many downtown surface lots. Museum hours, parking and admission details are available online.

Hopdoddy Burger Bar has options for people dining in or celebrating from home this year given the gradual recovery from the pandemic.

Celebrating at Hopdoddy-

Celebrating at Home –

Try Hopdoddy’s new Roadie, the Cran-Hibiscus — a half-gallon bag of frozen, hard lemonade with cranberry and hibiscus flavor. This frozen, 64 oz. to-go option is enough to share with a whole party.

Hopdoddy also published this helpful guide, How to Celebrate National Margarita Day, and it comes full of celebration ideas.

Good Morning Bedlam’s new album Lulu

Good Morning Bedlam will release full length folk pop album Lulu on February 4, 2022. Courtesy photo, used with permission.

Folk-pop storytellers Good Morning Bedlam’s shows are known for their contagious energy. With members moving about the stage—jumping and dancing with a wild playfulness—and tight soaring three-part harmonies and thumping kick-drum, they captivate their audience night after night with no intention of slowing down. On February 4, 2022, their brand new album Lulu will bring that energy to anyone and everyone who wants to hear it. (Good Morning Bedlam, 2021)

Like their highly regarded live show, just when you think you have Good Morning Bedlam pegged, they take you in another direction. “We want to surprise our audience from song to song,” says Good Morning Bedlam front man Izaak Elker. “Rather than creating our music to fit a genre, we allow it to be an outpouring of our own stories and unique sound.”

As part of Good Morning Bedlam, Elker, along with his wife Tori on bass and band co-founder Sophia Mae Beyer on fiddle, spent over 200 days playing shows to their ever-growing fanbase in 2019 before the world shut down. In February of 2021, Isaak, Sophia, and Tori returned to Carpet Booth Studios—right where they had left off tracking new songs in March 2020—to work with Zach Zurn on their third full-length record Lulu.

Good Morning Bedlam on tour:
February 4 – Saint Paul, MN – Amsterdam Bar and Hall (Album release show)
February 11 – Winona, MN – Ed’s
February 12 – Aurora, IL – The Venue
February 19 – New York Mills, MN – New York Mills Cultural Center
March 12 – Appleton, WI – Poplar Hall

Good Morning Bedlam has become a staying force in the folk genre with a 200 plus show tour in 2019 before the COVID-19 shutdown, claiming the first-place title at the John Hartford Memorial Festival Band Competition, and being finalists at the NWSS Band Competition. GMB has played at festivals alongside artists such as Shakey Graves, Sam Bush, Jason Isabell, The Infamous Stringdusters, Trampled By Turtles, and others. In 2021 GMB ran a successful Kickstarter in July of 2021 for their much anticipated third full-length record ‘Lulu’ where fans from around the world pledged a total of $34,000. GMB has been featured on Bluegrass Today, Relix Magazine, State and Water, and Paste Magazine.
