The Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas (CBCST) will host its 25th Anniversary Luncheon from 11:30a.m. to 1p.m. on Thursday, October 27, at the Witte Museum, 3801 Broadway. For 25 years, the CBCST has provided critical support services for grieving children. This year’s event commemorates that milestone and will feature guest speaker Bode Miller, an Olympic and World Championship gold medalist in alpine skiing, who has personally experienced the tragic loss of a child. (Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas, 2022)

Bode Miller and his wife, former pro beach volleyball player Morgan Beck, are parents to eight children. In 2018, they suffered devastating loss after the tragic drowning of their 19-month-old daughter, Emeline. Miller will host a question-and-answer session during the luncheon, sharing his message of resilience and hope.

During the luncheon, attendees may purchase a limited edition necklace specifically designed for the CBCST by local jewelry artist, Lee Ann Jones, as part of her #ShareYourSparkle line. Featuring a lone Fresh Water Pearl and signature Diamond Fairy Dust Bead on a delicate gold chain, the necklace will sell for $500. One hundred dollars from each sale will be donated directly back to the CBCST.

“We are thankful to observe 25 years of helping San Antonio and South Texas youth who have had to grapple with unimaginable heartache. It has been a privilege to be trusted by families from all socioeconomic backgrounds and ethnicities in helping them navigate the uncertainty of grief. This annual luncheon allows us to acknowledge our years of service with the community that has done so much for us.” – CBCST Executive Director Marian Sokol

Tables of eight and individual tickets are still available and may be purchased online.

The Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas’ mission is to foster healing for grieving children and youth, their families and the community. As the sole provider of grief support programs for children through young adulthood in South Texas, CBCST wholeheartedly devotes itself to addressing the bereavement needs of children from every culture and social circumstance to help them heal and move forward. CBCST believes that each person’s journey through grief is unique and therefore deserving of a distinctive approach. Their goal is to help children and their caregivers understand the depth of their grief, stabilize and preserve family relationships, and develop healthy coping skills after the death of a loved one.

Fortieth anniversary of ‘Battlefield Earth’ by L. Ron Hubbard

‘Battlefield Earth’ by L. Ron Hubbard. Courtesy photo, used with permission.

Science fiction classics are timeless stories that continue to captivate readers over the generations. I love books of all genres (at least most genres), both new and classics, especially science fiction. Books like “The Expanse” and “Expeditionary Forces” are very entertaining, but anyone who loves sci-fi will agree that there are several sci-fi classics that stand the test of time and are must-reads. (Galaxy Press, 2022)

Take for example “Battlefield Earth” by L. Ron Hubbard It is right up there with “Dune,” The Foundation Trilogy, and “Ender’s Game” and it is similar to Star Wars in terms of epic space opera adventure. Because this year marks the 40th Anniversary, I want to give it a shout-out.

Like many other classics, it was made into a major motion picture; it stars John Travolta and Forrest Whittaker and is directed by Roger Christian. While movies may not measure up to the novels that inspire them, this one has an average of over 3.8 stars on Amazon (not bad!). Also, the unabridged audio is outstanding with thousands of 5-star reviews on Audible. The story is non-stop, and a real page-turner.

Here is the Amazon description:

Sadistic Aliens……Man is an endangered species. Is it the end of the world or the rebirth of a new one? In the year A.D. 3000, Earth is a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Cities stand crumbling as a brutal reminder of what we once were. When the aliens invaded, all the world’s armies mustered little resistance against their advanced weapons. Now, all that stands between mankind and total extinction is Jonnie Goodboy Tyler—the courageous young warrior determined to rally the scattered tribes of humanity in an all-out battle for freedom. The fate of the Galaxy lies on the Battlefield of Earth. Get it now.

Notable authors LOVE this book. Here is what a few of them have to say:

“Pulse-pounding mile-a-minute sci-fi action-adventure that does not stop. It is a masterpiece of popular adventure science fiction.” —Brandon Sanderson (Way of Kings)

“Over 1,000 pages of thrills, spills, vicious aliens and noble humans. Un-put-downable.” —Neil Gaiman (Good Omens)

“Battlefield Earth is a terrific story! A masterpiece.” —Robert A. Heinlein (Starship Troopers)

“Wonderful … adventure … great characters … a master piece.” —A. E. Van Vogt

“Non-stop and fast-paced. Every chapter has a big bang-up adventure.” —Kevin J. Anderson (co-author of the Dune Sagas)

“With great heroes, battles, wonders, and interstellar intrigue, this is a book that you won’t put down.” —David Farland (Star Wars novels)

So celebrate the 40th anniversary by reading it (or re-reading) this year! Also available on Goodreads, Barnes & Noble, and Audible.

Yonder Mountain String Band re-release Town by Town

Yonder Mountain String Band re-releases pivotal second album Town By Town for twentieth anniversary. Courtesy photo, used with permission.

September 27, 2021 marked the 20th Anniversary of award¬-winning Colorado bluegrass luminaries Yonder Mountain String Band’s incredibly popular and influential second studio album, Town by Town. To celebrate, YMSB has just announced a 20th-anniversary re-release of this modern classic on 180g double vinyl. Originally released on the band’s own independent label, Frog Pad Records, Town by Town features founding members Adam Aijala, Ben Kaufmann, Dave Johnston, and Jeff Austin, along with album producer and bluegrass legend Tim O’Brien who lends his talent on fiddle and bouzouki. “Wow, 20 years have gone by since I dove in with Yonder for a new recording,” says O’Brien. “It’s a good thing to look back and see what we did and what happened since.” The 20th Anniversary release of Town by Town is available on their online store. (Yonder Mountain String Band, 2021)

Over time, the songs of Town by Town have grown into classics in their own rights and are certainly considered fan favorites at YMSB’s legendary live shows. Additionally, Town by Town paved the way for the next generation of jam-grass talent who regularly pay tribute to the Nederland, Colorado-formed band—and specifically this album—in their live shows. Six-string shredder Billy Strings slides “Sorrow Is A Highway” into his live shows and Greensky Bluegrass cover “Peace of Mind” in their sets. Up and comers The Kitchen Dwellers cover “New Horizons” and fellow jam-circuit veteran Keller Williams put the same song on his first bluegrass album with Larry and Jenny Keel. YMSB’s reach expanded beyond the bluegrass community when rapper Bubba Sparxxx sampled “To See you Comin’ Round the Bend” for the track “Comin’ Round” from his 2003 album Deliverance.

Looking back twenty years later, it is apparent the impact Town by Town had—and continues to have—on YMSB’s fans and contemporaries. “They were excited and determined and open-minded. I pushed them some, they pushed me some and we both learned a lot,” remembers producer Tim O’Brien. “At that time Yonder was exploding on the scene, gathering new fans like a wet snowball rolling down a black diamond slope. I doubt they knew they were carving out their own legacy. I was honored to be there with them.” Check here for a full tour listing.

Project Pollo celebrates first anniversary

Project Pollo will celebrate one year at Roadmap Brewing Co. with free Chikn Sandwiches, pints, games, giveaways, and more. Photo: Project Pollo, used with permission.

Project Pollo is celebrating their first anniversary at Roadmap Brewing Co. This is the original site where Project Pollo first started as a wildly popular plant-based food truck slinging delicious chikn’ based delights before spreading its wings and expanding with brick and mortars across the state. The fun happens Saturday, September 18 from 12p.m. to 3p.m. where patrons can enjoy FREE Chikn’ sandwiches made with house breaded crispy Chikn’ strips topped with house-made aioli and dill pickles. Since all roads lead to beer at Roadmap Brewing Co, the pet-friendly craft brewery will be offering $1 off pints of brew to wash down your meal while you enjoy tunes by DJ Danny, outdoor games like Flickin’ Chicken and awesome door prizes. (Project Pollo, 2021)

There will be plenty of specials at all locations statewide. September 18 is also National Cheeseburger Day, and all locations will be offering an anniversary special of two plant-based Double Cheez Burgers served on a brioche bun with birdy sauce, double Impossible meat patties, dill pickle, cheddar cheez, and a grilled onion for $9.18. From birdy to burger, there is something for everyone.

Based in San Antonio, Project Pollo has been named as one of the top 15 vegan fast-food chains in the US by VegNews. It is the brainchild of entrepreneur, Lucas Bradbury, who recently made the list of 28 Young Restaurant Leaders to Watch by QSR Magazine for the first-of-its-kind concept. For the past year, this plant-based fast-food chicken concept has been ruffling industry feathers with its unprecedented growth of 12 locations in just over 12 months. The rebellious recipe for success lies in challenging industry norms with a combination of plant-based affordability, convenience, sustainability, and deliciousness that attracts the adamant vegan and makes converts out of curious carnivores. More than just a restaurant, Project Pollo is a company that gives a cluck. With a motto of people over profits, the stores have given away more than 9,000 vegan sandwiches, burgers, and hot dogs and saved as many as 239,782 chickens.

Project Pollo is committed to changing the face of the fast-food industry by offering affordable, delicious, convenient access to quality, plant-based options that everyone from the veteran vegan to the curious carnivore will enjoy. Asleep at the Wheel kicks off 50th anniversary with new EP

The Better Times is Asleep at the Wheel’s new EP. Courtesy photo, used with permission.

Founded in 1970, Asleep at the Wheel has been part of the American roots music landscape for more than 50 years. Although the band got its start on a farm in Paw Paw, West Virginia, Asleep at the Wheel became a cornerstone of the Austin, Texas, scene upon its arrival in 1973. Inspired by Western swing and honky-tonk country, the band has received 10 GRAMMY® Awards, was cited by the Country Music Association as the 1976 Touring Band of the Year, and was given the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award by the Americana Music Association. They have released 31 albums and charted more than 20 singles on the country charts. (IV-PR, 2021)

Fifty years ago—before Americana or outlaw or cosmic country ever had a name—Ray Benson and his band Asleep at the Wheel were carrying the torch of some of America’s favorite music into the future with fiery live shows, droves of followers, and a mainstream swing sound all their own. Fast forward five decades to find Benson and crew still bearing that torch, albeit with quite a few more fans and albums under their belt. To begin the celebration of its 50th anniversary, Asleep at the Wheel is releasing new music ahead of a quick trip through Texas and Missouri this June—a preview of sorts for what is to come from their momentous anniversary year. On May 28, the band will release a three-song EP dubbed The Better Times, produced by Benson for Bismeaux Records. Benson takes the lead vocal on the title track, a hopeful original written while riding out the pandemic. Asleep at the Wheel vocalist and fiddler Katie Shore sings “All I’m Asking,” a rousing request to get back together, written by Band of Heathens’ Ed Jurdi, and Gordi Quist. Meanwhile, Benson and Shore harmonize on “Columbus Stockade Blues,” a traditional tune arranged in the spirit of Willie Nelson and Shirley Collie’s 1960s version.

Once The Better Times is out in the world, Asleep at the Wheel will be hitting the road to celebrate—not just the EP, but the fact that they are able to tour again—with a run of shows that will take them from Texas’ legendary Gruene Hall on May 29, up through Texas to Columbia and St. Louis, Missouri, and back down to College Station to end the run on June 20.

Asleep at the Wheel fans are highly encouraged to stay tuned as the band gets further along into their 50th anniversary year—2021 has more exciting announcements in store.

Pearl celebrates anniversary of Farmers Market

Pearl celebrates Farmers Market’s 12th year in service with national recognition and new Sunday Makers Market. Photo: Pearl, used with permission.

Pearl is pleased to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the launch of the successful Pearl Farmers Market this coming Saturday, May 15, 2021. The market, which was recently named one of the 2021 top 10 farmers markets in the U.S. by USA Today, started in 2009 and has grown to host more than 50 local vendors every Saturday and Sunday. To officially celebrate its 12th year, Pearl Farmers Market will be offering complimentary cupcakes onsite to guests while supplies last. (Pearl, 2021)

Starting Saturday, May 15, Pearl Farmers Market will update its structure to better meet the needs of shoppers and vendors. Saturdays will continue as the Farmers Market from 9a.m. to 1p.m., while Sundays will be reserved for the Makers Market. The new structure will allow for additional local artisans and makers who produce culinary-inspired wares. More than 40 vendors will participate in Sundays’ Makers Market. The hours of operation for the Makers Market are 10a.m. to2 p.m. every Sunday starting May 16, 2021.

“After such a trying year with the pandemic and the winter storm that threatened so many of our region’s producers, we are thrilled with the national recognition placing us in the top five for US Farmers Markets. Pearl’s weekend Markets have grown tremendously over the last dozen years. As part of our market’s evolution, we are creating a new structure that features Farmers Market on Saturdays and Makers Market on Sundays. “ – chief marketing officer Elizabeth Fauerso.

The new changes and expansion to the market conveniently line up with Pearl’s recent recognition last month as one of the top 10 farmers markets in the country according to USA Today. Pearl’s market took the 5th spot on the list. The market attracts approximately 6,000 shoppers each week and hosts more than 50 vendors from within a 150 mile radius of San Antonio to ensure produce is fresh and products are regional.

Pearl, located north of downtown San Antonio, provides a unique experience as a top culinary and cultural destination. The mixed-use space features retail, dining, picturesque green spaces, paseos riverside amphitheater, and the third campus of The Culinary Institute of America. As a former brewery operating from 1883 to 2001, Pearl reflects a vivid past while embracing the future with environmentally sustainable buildings mixed with historic architecture.
