Karl Pillemer, PhD, is the founder and director of the Cornell Institute for Translational Research on Aging, a center that works to increase public awareness of aging research. Dr. Pillemer has authored more than one hundred scientific publications and has spoken widely throughout the world on issues of successful aging, family relationships, and elder care. His book “30 Lessons for Loving: Advice from the Wisest Americans on Love, Relationships, and Marriage” gives sage advice and memorable stories from extraordinary older Americans who share advice on love, relationships, and marriage. (Amazon, 2024)
“30 Lessons for Loving” – Based on the most detailed survey of long married people ever conducted, it shows the way to lifelong, fulfilling relationships. The author offers sage advice from the oldest and wisest Americans on everything from finding a partner, to deciding to commit, to growing old together. Along the way, the book answers questions like these: How do you know if the person you love is the right one? What are the secrets for improving communication and reducing conflict? What gets you through the major stresses of marriage, such as child-rearing, work, money issues, and in-laws? From interviews with 700 elders it offers unique wisdom that will enrich anyone’s relationship life, from people searching for the right partner to those working to keep the spark alive after decades together. It is structured around thirty distinct lessons, each offering practical advice and profound insights derived from real-life stories.
Chapters include: Chapter 1: Evening the Odds: Lessons for Finding a Mate Chapter 2: Communication Is the Key Chapter 3: Getting Through the Hard Parts Chapter 4: Keeping the Spark Alive Chapter 5: Thinking Like an Expert About Love and Marriage
Review: One of the book’s greatest strengths is its blend of empirical research with heartfelt personal stories. Pillemer’s approach is scholarly and accessible, making the wisdom of seasoned couples relatable and actionable for readers of all ages. The lessons cover a wide range of topics, from the importance of communication and forgiveness to the role of shared experiences in strengthening bonds.
Highlights: Chapter 2 Lesson Five: Three Danger Signs – Points to dangers signs that could signal that a relationship is in trouble including Violence – Once is More Than Enough; Your Partner Is Controlling; and Your Partner Demeans You.
Chapter 3 Lesson Two: Work-Family Stress: Make Your Home a Safe Haven – emphasizes the importance of making your home a safe place free from the stresses of work and avoiding the dreaded “spillover”: “…elders believe that adopting an attitude that ‘home is home and work is work’ is a critical first step.
Overall, “30 Lessons for Loving” is an optimistic yet realistic perspective on love and acknowledges the complexities and challenges of relationships while providing hopeful strategies for overcoming them. The practical advice, grounded in the experiences of those who have navigated long-term relationships, offers valuable guidance for anyone seeking to deepen their connections with loved ones. It is a thoughtful and enriching read for anyone interested in the enduring art of love.
“It’s true that the experts highlight verbal communication-they want you to keep talking. But in addition to conversations, they suggest that actions can speak as loudly as words.”

‘Loka’ (The Alloy Era Book 2) is the new hard science fiction novel by S.B. Divya. Photo: Amazon
S.B. Divya is the Hugo- and Nebula-nominated author of “Meru” in the Alloy Era series, “Machinehood,” “Runtime,” and the short-story collection “Contingency Plans for the Apocalypse and Other Possible Situations.” Her stories have been published in various magazines, such as Analog and Uncanny; on Tor.com; and in several anthologies, including Seasons Between Us and Rebuilding Tomorrow. She holds degrees in computational neuroscience and signal processing and she worked for twenty years as an electrical engineer before becoming an author. In her new book is “Loka (The Alloy Era Book 2),” finding a place to belong becomes a girl’s ambitious quest. It is a thrilling epic about space, humanity, and self-discovery. (Amazon, 2024)
“Loka” – Sixteen year old Akshaya is the hybrid daughter of Jayanthi (from the first book “Meru”), a human mother, and Vara, an alloy – a genetically engineered posthuman. She’s the future of life on the planet Meru, but Akshaya has other plans. Before choosing where her future lies, she wants to circumnavigate the most historic orb in the universe—the birthplace of humanity: Earth.
Akshaya’s parents reluctantly agree to her participation in the Anthro Challenge – one with no assistance from alloy devices, transport, or wary alloys themselves who manage humanity and the regions of Earth called Loka. It’s just Akshaya, her equally bold best friend, Somya, and a carefully planned itinerary, traveling continent by continent across a wondrous terrain of things she’s never seen before including blue skies, sunrises, snowcapped mountains, and roiling oceans.
As the adventure unfolds, the travelers discover love and new friendships, but they also learn the risks of a planet that’s not entirely welcoming. On this journey—exciting, dangerous, and life-changing—Akshaya will discover what human existence really means.
Review:
“Loka” continues the thrilling saga with an imaginative blend of futuristic technology and humanity’s ever present sense of belonging and identity. The story begins with Akshaya and her friends aboard Chedi, a conscious megaconstruct with a cylindrical body traveling through space. It is the only home she has ever known so she is naturally curious about what else is out there. Divya world-building is amazing, as she creates a rich, immersive environment that blends futuristic technology with traditional concepts like family, friends, and relationships, offering a fresh perspective on the genre. The vivid descriptions and innovative technologies bring the story to life, immersing readers in a vividly constructed universe: “…the chromatophores made me a hybrid – altered enough not to be entirely human, but not so different as to count as an alloy.”
The extensive character development makes the characters relevant. Akshaya’s internal conflicts and growth are portrayed with depth and empathy, making her journey both engaging and relatable. Everything she is experiencing along the way is new to her, so her reactions are emotional: “I listened to the sound of raindrops outside, the wind spattering them in bursts every few minutes. A rainstorm!” The plot unfolds with a series of unexpected twists and turns, maintaining a brisk pace while exploring thought-provoking themes about humanity’s relationship with technology and nature. The secondary characters also receive significant attention, enriching the narrative and adding layers to the central plot. The narration is in the first person point of view through Akshaya’s eyes and the language is easy to understand.
Overall, “Loka” is a thought-provoking and imaginative read that will appeal to fans of speculative fiction and those interested in the intersection of technology and humanity. With its steady pacing and unexpected twists, it offers a compelling continuation of the series. It’s a must-read for fans of speculative fiction who appreciate a fusion of high-tech and traditional elements, delivering both excitement and thoughtful exploration of its themes: identity, friendship, and perseverance.
“I ached in a hundred places, but I was too exhausted to care. We had crossed the Euphrates, I had survived hours of being alone, and we were together again. In that moment, nothing else mattered.”

Survive the Summer with Wildlife and the “Big Four”: Through September 8
The exhibition’s title references Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, which had a revolutionary impact on how people from Western cultures envisioned our relationship with the other animals on Earth. In the post-Darwin era, a group of classically trained painters now known as the “Big Four” emerged and helped establish a vision of wildlife and nature that remains with us today. German Richard Friese (1854–1918) is the Big Four’s elder, followed chronologically by Swede Bruno Liljefors (1860–1939), German Wilhelm Kuhnert (1865–1926), and German-American Carl Rungius (1869–1959).

Trousdale’s Out Of My Mind expands on their original debut album. Photo: Caity Krone, used with permission.
Guided by their unbreakable friendship and three-part harmonies, LA folk-pop band Trousdalerecently released Out Of My Mind Deluxe.Vastly expanding their debut offering, the deluxe includes live renditions of their tracks recorded at LA’s legendary El Rey Theatre, features from Ben Abraham and BAILEN, and covers of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain” and One Direction’s “Night Changes” recorded for Sirius XM. (Trousdale, 2024)
The trio, built up by Quinn D’Andrea, Georgia Greene, and Lauren Jones, shaped the tracks from the original version of Out of My Mind over the course of two years, spread between sessions in Nashville, sessions at singer-songwriter Jon Bellion’s house in Long Island, and time bouncing between the three members’ homes. Making sure they maintained their hand in the recording and production process, the group opted for home studios, returning to the comfort and intimacy of the process that they’d honed at school in California.
“The real Trousdale sound got its legs when the three of us became heavily involved in the production of our music,” shares Lauren Jones. “The expectations and standards for women are always higher than those of men, and the world of music production is no different. Young girls that show an aptitude for music are more often pushed to be performers than men, which is another reason why there are way more women artists that also produce than there are women producers. Male collaborators get more credit than they’re worth, and then they get hired and rehired to do more projects that gain them more credibility in the field and more money.”
Quinn D’Andrea adds that their opportunity to connect with young women is a particular point of pride. “More than anything I love going on the road and seeing young women connecting to the power of music and telling your story on your own terms,” she says. “Our friendship and acceptance of each other holds us together, and I think that brings our fans together as well.” A wheel that keeps on turning, the music fuels the friendship, and the friendship fuels the music. Since formation, Trousdale has amassed over 75 million streams worldwide.
The album arrives with a live video of Trousdale’s cover of “The Chain.” A few weeks back, the trio also released a video for fan-favorite “Point Your Finger,” where they can be seen raising hell in a billiards bar.

Review:
This book is an invaluable resource for anyone navigating the complexities of workplace dynamics. In this useful guide, Moment organizes conflict resolution into accessible strategies, making it suitable for both newcomers and seasoned professionals.
He begins by defining conflict as what happens “when individuals possess differing needs, goals, or values, leading to disagreements that can either be personal or systemic within an organization.” Along with that, he explains the various types of conflict and the role that emotions play in it. The book is well organized, featuring clear explanations of core concepts and real-world examples that illustrate each point. The focus is on the importance of building confidence and effective communication, highlighting how these skills are crucial in diffusing tense situations. His step-by-step approach provides readers with actionable techniques, such as active listening and empathetic engagement, which can be immediately applied.
Chapters include: Introduction Chapter 1 The Foundation of Conflict Resolution Chapter 2 Effective Communication Skills for Conflict Resolution Chapter 3 Understanding Emotions in Conflict Management Chapter 4 Different Communication Styles and Conflict Chapter 5 Mastering Leadership Styles for Effective Conflict Resolution Chapter 6 Conflict Negotiation Strategies for Win-Win Outcomes Chapter 7 Conflict Resolution Skills: Top 20 Skills Managers Need to Resolve Conflict in the Workplace with Ease Chapter 8 Mediation Skills for Resolving Conflict Chapter 9 Resolving Workplace Conflicts: Common Scenarios and Solutions Chapter 10 Conflict Resolution and Organizational Culture Chapter 11 Legal and Ethical Considerations in Conflict Resolution Chapter 12 Self Care and Resilience in Conflict Resolution Chapter 13 Applying Conflict Resolution Skills Beyond the Workplace Chapter 14 The Conflict Transformer: 30 Expert Tips to Turn Workplace Challenges into Opportunities Chapter 15 R.E.S.O.L.V.E™ Your Workplace Conflicts: A Coaching Exercise Conclusion
Highlights:
Chapter 3: explains the importance of emotional intelligence, especially in yourself because once you acknowledge and understand your own feelings, you can begin to efficiently deal with conflict. Self awareness is key. “Emotions can act like unpredictable waves, crashing down unexpectedly or quietly bubbling beneath the surface, complicating even the simplest interactions.”
Chapter 13: emphasizes how knowing how to deal conflict can be useful outside the workplace, including in the community and in personal relationships. “Effective conflict resolution is not just about finding a quick fix; it can significantly strengthen relationships, enhance mutual understanding, and promote a sense of harmony.”
Each chapter ends with Coaching Questions which further enhance the learning experience. It is an easy read with language that is clear and concise. What I especially liked is the combination of theoretical insights with practical applications, empowering readers to not only resolve conflicts but also foster a more collaborative work environment.
Overall, “Conflict Resolution Skills” is an essential read for anyone seeking to enhance their interpersonal skills. It’s not just about resolving disputes; it’s about cultivating a mindset that promotes understanding and cooperation in the workplace. Though highly recommended for managers, team leaders, and employees seeking to improve their conflict management abilities and create a more positive and productive workplace, anyone outside the work environment can benefit from the practical material.

Supernatural horror films captivate audiences by tapping into the unknown and the unexplainable. By introducing eerie elements like ghosts, demons, and ancient curses that defy logical understanding, they blur the line between reality and fantasy. These films evoke a primal sense of dread, utilizing atmospheric tension, unsettling soundtracks, and eerie visuals to create a palpable sense of menace. By exploring what lies beyond the realm of the living, supernatural horror challenges our perception of reality and taps into our most profound anxieties.
With that said, in today’s movie news, if you love these types of films, there’s a new one coming out today. The supernatural horror film The Well arrives in select theaters on August 9 and On Digital and On Demand September 3, 2024 via Uncork’d Entertainment. (The Well, 2024)
