Exploring the Intersection of Science and Spirituality in ‘The Miraculous from the Material’

Alan Lightman’s new book ‘The Miraculous from the Material: Understanding the Wonders of Nature’ will be out November 19, 2024. Photo: Amazon.

Books about science and the wonders of the natural world captivate readers with the marvels of the cosmos and the awe-inspiring phenomena of nature. They unravel the mysteries of celestial bodies and open our eyes to the intricate beauty of the world around us. Through engaging narratives and stunning illustrations, these books inspire wonder and curiosity, encouraging us to explore the science behind the beauty that surrounds us, both above and below.

For readers who enjoy books about nature, photography, and science, there’s a new book coming out next month by Alan Lightman that is worth noting.

Alan Lightman earned his PhD in physics from the California Institute of Technology and is the author of seven novels, including the international best seller “Einstein’s Dreams” and “The Diagnosis,” a finalist for the National Book Award. His nonfiction includes “The Transcendental Brain,” “The Accidental Universe,” “Searching for Stars on an Island in Maine,” and “Probable Impossibilities.” He has taught at Harvard and at MIT, where he was the first person to receive a dual faculty appointment in science and the humanities. He is currently a professor of the practice of the humanities at MIT. He is the host of the public television series Searching: Our Quest for Meaning in the Age of Science.

His new book “The Miraculous From the Material: Understanding the Wonders of Nature” is an illustrated exploration of the science behind the universe’s most stunning natural phenomena—from atoms and parameciums to rainbows, snowflakes, spider webs, the rings of Saturn, galaxies, and more. It will be released on November 19, 2024 and is available for pre-order on Amazon. (Penguin Random House, 2024)

“The Miraculous From the Material: Understanding the Wonders of Nature” – Nature is capable of extraordinary phenomena. Standing in awe of those phenomena, we experience a feeling of connection to the cosmos. For acclaimed physicist and novelist Alan Lightman, just as remarkable is that all of what we see around us—soap bubbles, scarlet ibises, shooting stars—are made out of the same material stuff and obey the same rules and laws. This is what Lightman calls “spiritual materialism,” the belief that we can embrace spiritual experiences without letting go of our scientific worldview.

Pairing 36 beautiful, full-color photos evoking some of nature’s most awe-inspiring phenomena with accessible and lyrical personal essays, “The Miraculous from the Material” explores the fascinating science underlying the natural world. Why do rainbows make an arc? Why does a particular waterfall at Yosemite National Park sometimes glow like it’s on fire? How does a hummingbird fly? The world has so many things to marvel at—and the science is just as fascinating.

Lightman’s imagination travels from the world of atoms and molecules to the animal kingdom, from places like Ha Long Bay, Vietnam and the Grand Canyon out to the solar system and beyond, illuminating the majesty of the cosmos and the remarkable science behind it. “The Miraculous from the Material” is a stunning, soaring ode to the beauty and wonder around us, and the perfect holiday gift for photography aficionados, life-long learners, and admirers of the natural world.

With haunting visuals and a memorable score, Insidious has become a modern classic in the horror genre, known for its unsettling atmosphere and jump scares. It reinvigorated the genre with its unique blend of supernatural elements and psychological tension. The film’s success helped to revive interest in low-budget horror, proving that compelling narratives could resonate with audiences without heavy reliance on gore. Viewers praised its ability to create suspense through atmosphere rather than just jump scares, influencing subsequent horror films. Insidious also introduced a new wave of supernatural themes, inspiring a generation of filmmakers and establishing itself as a modern classic in horror cinema.

For fans of the movie, who also enjoy live entertainment, there’s an exciting event coming to the Majestic Theatre in March – Insidious: The Further You Fear. The tour launches in January and tickets are on sale now.

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Brace yourself for the scare of a lifetime, as the world of Insidious jumps off the screen and directly into your theater seat with Insidious: The Further You Fear – a live immersive horror experience that will bring your darkest fears to life right before your eyes, based on the box office hit horror film franchise from Blumhouse, director James Wan, and writer Leigh Whannell. (Majestic Theatre, 2024)

GEA Live, Blumhouse, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and RoadCo Entertainment have joined forces to unveil a spine-tingling, live immersive show that will haunt 80+ seated theaters across North America in 2025 including The Majestic Theatre on March 20, 2025.

For tickets, tour dates, and more information, visit Insidious: The Further You Fear online.

Insidious: The Further You Fear is an exciting new story conceived within the Insidious universe. Hosted as a live event by the “real” Specs and Tucker, the actual paranormal investigators who inspired the first movie, the “Spectral Sightings Road Show” soon takes a turn for the terrifying. As the infamous duo desperately try to prove they are legitimate ghost-hunters, things start to become very Insidious when a paranormal demonstration goes wrong and dark forces are inadvertently unleashed. Trapped in a genuinely haunted theatre, with something truly sinister lurking back-stage, the audience will find themselves under attack from such iconic characters as the Bride in Black, the Wheezing Man and, of course, the terrifying Lipstick Faced Demon. But what’s real? What’s the show? And who are you really sitting next to?

The house is full. The stage is set. And the Red Door is about to open.

Insidious: The Further You Fear is a heart-pounding live theatrical experience where the lines between reality and fiction blur, constantly challenging what’s real and what’s imagined, what’s safe and what’s dangerous. This groundbreaking immersive experience is meticulously crafted to always keep the audience on edge, with no fourth wall to separate them -or protect them- from the unfolding terror. Each attendee will go face-to-face with the protagonists, making the audience an integral character in the chilling story as it unravels.

“We have brought some of the most respected names in the horror and entertainment industries together to make this groundbreaking show possible and ensure a hauntingly unforgettable experience for audiences everywhere,” says Floris Douwes from GEA Live. “We’re excited to bring the eerie and otherworldly thrills of ‘Insidious’ to cities around the country,” says Co-Director Toby Park. Park, who is also composing the original music for the show, and Co-Director Aitor Basauri are artistic directors for Spymonkey, and serve as creative directors for Insidious: The Further You Fear.

“Bringing audiences deeper into The Further with this live experience has been an exciting challenge, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how they respond,” said Jason Blum, Founder/CEO, Blumhouse. “Insidious is one of our most popular franchises, with a sixth installment premiering next year, and this is a fresh and frightening new way for fans to experience it.”

The iconic “Insidious” franchise, consistently gaining momentum over the years, is a box office sensation generating more than $742 million in revenue across five highly successful films. The growing legion of fans includes an active community of five million social media followers. However, while the show is a must for Insidious fans, it’s also created for those who don’t know the films, particularly those who love a fun, thrill-filled night out at the theatre.

Blumhouse is the driving force in horror, producing over 200 movies and television series with theatrical grosses of almost $6 billion in global box office. Blumhouse is home to the highest number of ongoing franchises of any studio, including HalloweenThe PurgeThe Black PhoneParanormal ActivityThe ExorcistInsidiousM3GAN, and Five Nights at Freddy’s, along with iconic films from cinematic visionaries including Jordan Peele’s Get Out, Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash and Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman. Healing in Harmony: The Transformative Power of Classical Melodies

Music group performing onstage with empty audience seats. Photo: Manuel Nägeli on Unsplash.

When an artist records a classical album, especially when it’s not their first calling, there’s often a deeper story within the music itself. Mina Tulchinsky’s 2016 album of classical arias and original, classical-inspired compositions was an exploration of exactly this—healing through music. For her, the album became both a refuge and a connection to something timeless, which, despite the years since its release, resonates with listeners anew.

Music has long been a source of comfort and healing for people across the world. Scientists and therapists alike point to music’s power to reduce stress, soothe anxiety, and even aid in physical recovery. Rhythm, melody, and harmony have the unique ability to engage the brain and body simultaneously, creating an immersive experience that transports listeners away from their worries. This transformative quality goes beyond entertainment; it offers a form of solace and renewal, connecting individuals to something larger than themselves. It’s this intangible yet profound effect that makes music—especially the emotionally rich genre of classical—a powerful tool in the journey toward healing.

While classical music can feel out of reach to some, Tulchinsky’s album bridges that divide. Her personal experience, expressed through a mix of well-loved arias and fresh, relatable melodies, offers something that even those unversed in classical music can appreciate. Much like Agarita’s mobile concerts that bring Mozart or Bach to the community, Tulchinsky’s album seeks to bring the warmth of classical music into daily life. It’s this accessibility—classical sounds interpreted through a modern, approachable lens—that makes her album unique. She’s given listeners a glimpse of what healing can sound like, stripped of the formality and focused on the resonance of the experience.

The music, much like healing, is deeply personal yet universally accessible. By recording something so classical in style but infused with personal emotions, Tulchinsky has crafted a work that invites listeners from all walks of life. Classical music, for many, can carry a sense of ceremony, a distance. But this album, by a divorcee finding her way forward, takes that form and molds it into something that feels human and grounded. It’s music that meets listeners where they are, extending the sense that healing isn’t reserved for concert halls or grand stages but is accessible in one’s own space, at one’s own pace.

Photo: Facebook – Mina Joy Music

As listeners follow her journey—through heartbreak, resilience, and a renewed appreciation of self—they find a kindred spirit in music. Tulchinsky’s recent releases on Spotify bring these elements into even sharper focus, continuing to invite a wider audience into the classical fold without the need for pretension or exclusivity. Instead, her work represents healing that anyone can access, a simple melody away.

For anyone curious about classical music but hesitant to dive into a genre so steeped in tradition, Tulchinsky’s album is a reminder that music, in its essence, is for everyone. In opening this space for healing through her art, she’s reminded us all of music’s quiet, powerful ability to soothe and unite. Whether one finds solace by listening to her music or feels inspired to sing, play, or explore their own musical journey, her album stands as a testament to how music’s healing reach can be both deeply personal and universal. Through her melodies, Tulchinsky shows us that healing can start with just a single note, inviting us to embrace music’s transformative power in whatever way feels most meaningful.

Transformative Sounds: The Impact of trauma ray’s Chameleon on Listeners

trauma ray’s Chameleon will be released on October 25, 2024. Photo: Will McCarthy, used with permission.

The powerful new single Bardo from the North Texas rock band trauma ray is eerie, deviating between noisy one string bends and surging headbang, mapping a middle ground between Unwound and nu-metal. (another/side, 2024)

“Bardo is the in-between. Whether that’s life or death, or a purgatory. It’s about being stuck in between one phase and the next. When you can feel the past fading and yet you can’t quite see the path to the future either.” – Jonathan Perez, trauma ray guitarist

The Texas five is set to release their highly anticipated debut album Chameleon on October 25 via Dais Records which has already seen early acclaim from The FADER, Stereogum, Consequence (Heavy Song of the Week), Brooklyn Vegan, New Noise and more. Since first making waves with a S/T EP in 2018, trauma ray has been honing their live set across increasingly adventurous American tours – stacking amps and turning heads show by show, justly earning them a massive following in no time. The band’s three guitar attack is a force to behold, alternately surging, savage and spectral, drenched in precision distortion.

The core songwriting duo of Uriel Avila and Jonathan Perez has expanded and refined the project’s vision and craft, culminating throughout Chameleon. Rounded out by bassist Darren Baun, drummer Nicholas Bobotas, and guitarist Coleman Pruitt, the album both synthesizes and transcends its influences, a stormy fusion of downer hooks, apocalyptic beauty, and bulldozer riffs.

The name trauma ray was inspired by the German word for ‘daydream, or ‘dream state,’ in classic shoegaze fashion. Avila’s background in a devout Pentecostal community gives his lyrics about guilt, purgatory, and passing to the other side to an emotional authenticity that cuts through the music’s majestic volume.

Chameleon is a masterpiece of craft, balance, melody, lyricism, and gravity, flexing a fresh vision of loud-quiet-loud architectures and the vertigo depths of blasted harmonics. From Slowdive to Deftones to Hum and beyond, trauma ray absorb and expand on their influences into a rare and dedicated alchemy. trauma ray’s cinematic tempest is a gathering storm only just taking flight.

Just after a U.K. run, trauma ray will perform across their home state including dates at Levitation and with Panchiko. Other highlights include two release shows: one headlining The Roxy in LA and San Diego’s Voodoo Room. See all dates below and grab tickets here.

Wisdom in Action: How ‘The Potentialist: The Pursuit of Wisdom’ Inspires Personal Growth

‘The Pursuit of Wisdom’ is book 2 in The Potentialist series by Ben Lytle. Photo: Amazon

Books about personal transformation and growth offer profound insights and strategies for individuals seeking to change their lives. These books often explore themes like self-discovery, resilience, and growth, providing readers with tools to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. Authors share personal stories, research findings, and practical exercises that inspire action and reflection. By engaging with these texts, individuals can gain clarity, motivation, and a renewed sense of purpose, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling and authentic life.

There’s a new one out this month by Ben Lytle, author of The Potentialist series. In his second book, “The Pursuit of Wisdom,” he writes about wisdom, how to attain it, and the potential that exists in everyone, just waiting to be released.

Ben Lytle is a serial entrepreneur and health-care innovator known for being ahead of the curve. He launched five successful companies, including two on the New York Stock Exchange. The best known is Anthem, one of three leading U.S. health plans with a market capitalization placing it in the top 30 of the Fortune 500. He also founded Acordia, Inc., which became the world’s 7th largest insurance broker. (Meryl Moss Media, 2024)

Lytle’s devotion to individual and collective human potential through accelerated wisdom guides his writing, speaking, entrepreneurial energy, and investments. He believes people and organizations today underestimate the extent and speed with which the world will change. Time to adapt and prepare is being compressed, opportunities are being missed, and there will be unnecessary suffering unless prompt action is taken.

He is the author of the series The Potentialist, which includes Your Future in the New Reality of the Next Thirty Years, The Pursuit of Wisdom, and a third installment to come. The series is intended as a guidebook for success during the fast-changing, turbulent, and opportunity-rich times ahead — named The Fourth Industrial Revolution by the World Economic Forum. The newest one, “The Pursuit of Wisdom” is available now.

“The Potentialist: The Pursuit of Wisdom” –
Wisdom and potential are our ideal adaptive responses for these challenging times. Five converging forces are creating a new twenty-first century reality defined by unavoidable life-altering changes and unprecedented decisions. We are anxious and overwhelmed as the world and our lives change faster than we can comprehend and adapt. The old ways of adapting aren’t working because complex changes and decisions are coming at us too fast. In this New Reality, the wise will thrive, and the unprepared will be left frightened and confused.
